Thanks artsee ...I feel like my hair is at a stand still :(  I guess I'm a slow grower!  I will continue to use my Nioxin products ... But you have given me hope..by the time I go visit my daughter I will be 7 months from chemo and maybe just maybe my hair will be 3 inches long! Thanks again

Lori, not really sure how long, but it was a few months, maybe 4 before it I didn't notice it anymore.  The scrub was a really light one that dd had for sensitive skin.  I only did it once, but would scrub gently with a soft washclothe when showering too.

I'm now 11 months out and had maybe 3/4 inches removed with trims and its about 4 inches long now  Still curly in back and wavy elsewhere.  I don't take anything for it, and I'm pretty sure that the arimidex has slowed the growth, but I'm happy with it right now.  Only it's hard to learn how to deal with a natural curl when I've only ever had one perm at 25 and had very, very straight hair naturally

Artsee,  I won't shave, I promise! But the hair I am referring to is just the normal fuzz you have all over on your face. I swear its like 1/4" long. I have some longer, courser ones on my chin, those I just tweeze and I had them before BC. This long fuzz is mostly on the cheek areas in front of the ears.  Grrrrrrrr! Just have to deal with it I guess and hope some day it goes away.

Goldie:  I don't want to get into any kind of disagreement with Artsee -- she knows much more about hair than I do!  -- but I did want to clarify my earlier post about shaving.  The peach fuzz on my face was about a 1/4 inch long. flesh-coloured and, although you could really only see it when the light was shining a certain way, I KNEW it was there!  I also knew that it was like new baby hair and would probably disappear in time.  But, I took a ladies' shaver ((which I hadn't used in years!) and gently shaved it all off.  That was well over 2 months ago and it has not grown back.

Yes, I do have a stubborn chin hair which appeared during perimenopause (about 10 years ago), and which requires plucking about once a month!  But that has nothing to do with the peach fuzz, which is a natural s/e from losing one's hair due to chemo.

    Hope this helps!

Also intending no disagreement with Artsee, I'm posting that I did exactly the same thing as Linda (lindasa) with my post-chemo facial hair and had exactly the same results.

i had my last chemo at the end of August.. and I barely have .75 inches of hair.. more like .5.

it's curly in the back.. If i pull my ears out to the sides, I look just like an elf.  it's soft and boingy.

as to the peach fuzz on the face.. i just shaved it off.. it didn't come back.

Surprised Oh my, I am really confused now! Maybe I'll just try a small patch. But first, when you shaved it, did you really shave it, like you would shave your legs or did you just go over it lightly with a dry razor.

I just don't want man stubble on my face!

Goldie:  As I mentioned, I shaved dry with a ladies' electric shaver, and there was/is absolutely no man stubble!  In fact, as I type this, I'm gently rubbing a very smooth face!

    Cheers,  Linda

OK...goldie..I had ALOT of facial and neck hair appear.  I was also one who scoffed at the idea of "re"losing the eyebrows and lashes at the 3 month mark because I passed it just fine.  WELL, I'm now 21 weeks out and about 2 weeks ago I noticed my bottom lashes thinning.  Now my top lashes are as well.  Shame on me for doubting the expertise of these wonderful women (funny my male Onc had never heard of the relosing hair deal...men! He will hear from me next month on my follow up)

goldie - this is where you come in.  As I notice the lashes going (not the brows yet), I have noticed that my face and neck hair has diminished as well.  I did do some scissor trimming but nothing more.  I imagine that all of our follicles were in the same growth cycle to start so it was more noticable.  As they thin out slowly and regrow slowly it will get into its normal growth pattern.  Like I know we always had facial hair... just not that much and that long! at one time!  It will eventually settle back to normal.  I don't doubt those that shave have been successful but I think it just coincides with this growth pattern thing.  So you can leave it and wait or shave and have it be gone now.  Your choice.

By the way...I HATE this curly hair.  Who knew we'd ever get to complaining about having hair?  For fun I blew it dry yesterday, just using fingers and a hair dryer.  It was horrid.  DH gets home 10 hours later and asks "WHAT did you do to your hair?"  I wondered the same thing every time I passed a mirror. My personal afro.  I want my old hair back.  And what is up with all this grey?!

Ahhhh....to be complaining about hair is a GOOD thing.

Thank you ladies SO MUCH! Your responses are greatly appreciated.

Adrienne - I am 3 months out of chemo. I hated losing my eyebrows and eyelashes more than losing the hair on my head. Still have them, but now, who knows? They may be gone within the next 3 months. I guess I will wait and see what happens or maybe just do a small area with some scissors or electric razor and watch it. What chemo did you do? I wonder if that has anything to do with the lashes and brows coming out later. Is the hair on your head coming out too? I did Adrimyacin, Cytoxin and Taxol. I too am like you....."whats up with all this grey?" And then there are the private areas! Being a redhead, I had rather light red and not so course hair in that area, now its thick and black. And OMG, the back end! Well I haven't looked, but I can sure feel lots of thick course hair there too! I sure hope that falls out! Not thinking I will take a razor to that area....LOL!

    Thanks again

Thank you Family rocks....I couldn't of said it better myself. I had surrendered myself from this thread, but just wanted to add....

Don't Panic.....Wait.....Don't make hasty decisions....Everything will fall into place! The facial hair disappears (on it's own) .The head hair comes back and believe it or not, the curl (can) turn into the most beautiful loose curl you could ever imagine.Mine did. So relax and let it take it's time.....

    Cheers and hugs, Artsee

goldie - I also did A/C followed by T, dose dense.  The head hair has not been falling out.  Not sure why its different but it is.  Also noticed that the hair under my arms hasn't grown back since I last shaved it several weeks ago.  I like that!  If only the legs would do the same.

Goldie I did loose my eyelashes and eyebrows not completely but almost all were gone...about 8-9 weeks out of chemo, but they did come back quickly.Artsee...wish you didn't live sooo far away from me I would come see you for color!!!  My hair dresser did finally call me back and I have an appointment for next Thursday, I can't wait

My question is does the grey ever go away (without help!)? I was starting to get a little grey before chemo, but now that my hairs coming in, it's the opposite - a little brown and a lot grey. I don't like it, but I have never liked to color my hair so am I stuck with it?

Had to laugh about Goldie's 'private areas'. My formerly very light and curly hair has grown back straight and black. WTF! It's like I've been given the wrong one!SurprisedMy head hair is still very short (possibly an inch) but man it looks curly..out-of-control curly. I am really worried that I'm going to have hair like a kind of micro-curl perm. A-a-a-a-r-r-g-g-h-h. I first came back baby-fluff pale, then pepper & saltish, then I coloured it. But I notice that the newest stuff is very dark..I'm normally plain light brown. It's an adventure, isn't it? I swore I would NEVER complain about my hair again, but.....

My formerly curly hair is comming in straight and almost all grey.It makes me feel so old.  As soon as its long enough I am off to the salon for some serious colour.  I am seeing signs of life returning to my brows and eyelashes as well.

Can't wait to get hair again...I'm about 4 weeks past last chemo, and nothing yet.  I haven't lost my eyebrows or eyelashes, they're thinner, but still there.  But I really want my regular hair back!  And I want it to be like it used to be!  I never had much going for me in the looks department, except my long, thick hair.  Now I look like Uncle Fester.

Same here, tbird.  This clearly is someone else's hair on my head--mixed colors, springy curls, uneven growth.  Nothing like what I left behind (all over the furniture) during chemo.

I was looking in the mirror yesterday, wondering when this phase was gonna end.  Yes, back when I was hairless, I couldn't imagine complaining about my hair once it started to grow back.  But, here I am, doing it.  This is just so not what I was expecting, 7 months after chemo ended.

I think I even liked it better when it was just 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch long.  It looked so, ... I don't know, so strong.  Now it just looks goofy.  Yeah, that's it--Goofy.  Like somebody who has super-curly hair that is growing uncontrollably and she doesn't know any better.

[otter is taking time out to eat lunch ... ]

Okay, I've figured it out.  As I look at myself in the mirror, I don't see "me" at all.  (I sorta did during chemo, even when I was bald.)  This new person looks seriously, um, ... male.  I did some Google searching to try to figure out WTH was going on, and I came up with the "Teddy boy" look from the 1950's.

Here's what my hair looks like right now:  curly and full on top and in front, flat on the sides, and heaven-knows-what it's doing in back--(Note to Artsee--these are not actual pics of me):

In another few weeks, I'm afraid it's going to look like this:

Real cute, huh?  Noelle, I think I need your assistance.  What gives me nightmares is that eventually it will look like this

Okay, so that's an animal-skin cap on his head, but you get the point, right?

<sigh>  Just having a bad (hair) day today, I suppose...

Aw, Otter. I'm feeling the same way, too. My hair is just a tad shorter, but already getting to the point that it's too short to style  but it's doing all sorts of wild and crazy things.

May I suggest you color it?  It really helped me like it better once I got it to the color I wanted. Try a rinse or semi-permanent color, if you're not sure what you want.

When I look at the back, I'm really annoyed...
    ggggg

that second pic, i remember well, thinking, yep, I've seen my cousin(boy) looking like I do now :(  UGH!!!!!!!! Then i find a way to style it and like it for a couple weeks, then we are back with shoot, I hate it, shoot, it's all over the place, d@mn, this hair is driving me batty!

One day last week, I just blew it dry, no liquid styler, nuttin honey, but all natural....walked out to dh and said so....'And how do you like the au natural style today?'  He looks and as usual says, 'It's fine', it always is.  UGH!  Why can' t men get it!

Do I tell him his comb over bald cut looks 'fine'? No, I tell him he's sexy and cute and other narrative that makes him feel good about his self. Why can they NEVER learn to boost us up where we most certainly need it!!?  MEN!  Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.  Well, we could, but it sure helps to have someone to blame life on once in while besides us, huh :D

Otter, you made me laugh, and you really hit the nail on the head.  I don't recognize ME and that's who I'm looking for.  Like you say, it's a little bit me, but I need my hair back to be "normal." I've had the same hair, more or less, my entire life and it's part of who I am.  I want it back!

WORST OF ALL THOUGH: You know how you don't recognise yourself now..well I look at pics of myself pre chemo (like my avatar) and I don't recognise HER!!!!!!  XX

Has anyone tried the colored mousse?  My hairdresser mentioned trying that for that weekend I as going away, but I'm wondering if anyone here has?  I really don't want to have to start coloring it, I'm fine with the several colors its at now, as I was growing out the dyes as I was dx, so it okay with me, but...that weekend I'll be seeing a ton of people from family/friends, I've not seen since pre-chemo and would like to NOT have to hear all they grey comments also...

    Anyone?

YEE GADS Otter... I knew that wasn't you in the first picture. You wouldn't wear a balck mans shirt like that!!!!! now i don't mean a black persons..oh well, that just sounded funny the way it came out. Black (comma) man's, shirt. (Oh, shut up Artsee)

Anyway, looks like the poodle cut from years back and the other one reminds me of (Kookie) but where's his COMB? About the colored mouse...In order for it to cover grey, you have to put it on pretty thick and then it just looks very DULL on the hair. Of course it will, because the hair is all coated. UGH! I've cut my hair about 3 and  half times now and the hair is getting pretty uncurled. A nice bend, just so I can wear it a little spiked and funky like I used to. So, don't worry there is an end to the curl for those of you that are so unhappy with the poodle look.

Wishy...What can I say, men are men and "It is what it is"! Too late to teach an old dog new ticks that's what I always say.

Well, you ladies have given me my chuckle for the day! Laughing Otter, made me laugh too, but not laughing at you! Artsee, how far out of chemo are you to have had your hair cut 3 times? Mine is starting to grow over my ears. I wear glasses sometimes and it makes the hair stick curl out (stick out) from the arms of the glasses. Then there is what I call my wearwolf hair, the stuff of the back of the neck on the sides, now that is just wild and all over the place. But I don't want to cut ANYTHING! I had to buy another wig, just to cover all this wild stuff that started to hang out of my short blonde wig. My new wig makes me look like I am NancyD's twin. I'll try to post pics of my 2 wigs, but didn't have any luck the last time.

Lori...you look awesome in your wigs. Let me clarify about the 3 cuts. I like to keep the ends clipped because it makes for better and faster growing. The other ones were more texturing to thin the ends for the wispy style I like to wear.So we aren't looking at a whole lot of length cut off. Shaping and texturizing into a nice style. my hair always did grow fairly fast...except right after chemo was over (May 9th) the bangs took forever having a higher forehead. I'll see if I can post a picture one of these days.I'm glad I don't have to wait till my hair grows long like yours. That'll take a few (years) I don't look good in long.

Take care all and have a swell day, Artsee
