Ladies, you give me hope. My last tx was Nov.7th. I may have 1/2 inch of hair. Curls or not, I just want it to grow so I can get rid of this cursed wig.

    Curly ladies,

How long was your hair when it started to curl? Mine is 1/2 inch to inch at tops, and very straight. Just wondering!!!

    All,

I haven't posted on here for quite awhile, but wanted to add to the pictures.  I am 23 weeks out and probably have an inch and a half but it is very thick and very curly.  I of course feel like it is growing more slowly than others, but maybe not.  It seems like it grows length, then stops for awhile while it gets thicker, then more length etc.  It came back in pretty close to my original color.  I have been going commando since about the first of the year.  Just couldn't stand that stupid wig anymore!

    Thinned out eyelashes:

You might remember me telling you that my eye Dr.'s wife was Dx'ed and treated for BC at the same time as me. Well Monday he gave me Lumigan and told me to use on my lashes and brows. If I notice a difference he will give me another sample when it runs out. Although not FDA approved for this it seems to work. Here is a link to a video that Fox news did on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNbSHxM8I0s

Anyway just passing on along to you incase you care to ask your eye Dr. for it.

A woman who works for me has been using it for her glaucoma. Her lashes look like daddy-longlegs legs! It really does work. I'd just worry about the se's. Did he tell you any?

Ladies - I want to share with you a very touching story about what happened to me today regarding my wigs as this story truly shows how generous strangers can be.

I had been trying to find a rack with pegs that you would hang baseball type hats on that mounted on a wall with round pegs on the end for the purpose of hanging up my wigs.  I have 3 cats and the last thing I needed was to put them on wig stands and have my cats nest in them.

I went to Target and couldn't find anything so I headed to Home Depot.  I found an older gentleman (around 60" - grandfather type man) and asked him for assistance.  He showed me a shelf with dowels but the dowels were straight and I was worried about damage to the interior of the wig so I asked him if they had different dowels I could change out.

We went over to that section of the store and they didn't have anything.  I FINALLY told him that I was starting chemo next week and I needed something to hang my wigs so I needed something round on the end.  So he took me to kitchen cabinet hardware and showed me a "round pull" and I said that would be excellent.

He then started asking me if I needed anything fancy, how many wigs, how far apart the spacing, etc. He started writing all of this down.  He then said "go eat breakfast and come back in an hour"

I looked at him and said "are you saying that you are going to make this for me?"  He said "yes"

I started bawling like a baby because I just could not believe this man was going to go out of his way and have this made for me. I gave him a huge hug and said thanks.

I came back an hour later with my stepson and he showed me what they had made and it was PERFECT.  I then started crying again because of his compassion and generousity.  He then said the store manager wanted to meet me so I met him and started crying even harder thanking him for going way above and beyond, etc.

They wouldn't even let me pay for it - they took an hour of their time, their materials and gave it to me free.

I can tell you this.....I have shopped Home Depot for years but from now on I will not be shopping at Lowes - I am giving all of my business to Home Depot.

There are truly wonderful people that you meet in this world that are kind and compassionate.

jancie ~ I can barely see to type for the tears.  What a beautiful story.  There are some beautiful people in this world.

It seems the hair topic is still on my mind daily even though I finished chemo June 24, 2008.  I stopped wearing the wig Thanksgiving Day and really gave thanks.  I measured yesterday before a hairdresser appointment - 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches of curls when it was pulled straight.  Then I had my first haircut. Just a trim but it was getting messy.  The curls are still there but not as tight.  I like it but wonder if one of these haircuts will just leave me with short straight hair.  Whatever - it's hair.

My brows left me only once, 2 months after chemo and came back in 3-4 weeks but on the thin side. I use pencil to thicken but the space between the brows is a little wider than it used to be.  Sometimes I think it's getting ever so slightly wider.  Hope they don't leave again as often seems to happen. Has anyone lost their brows 8 months out?

Has anyone used the Lanigan for thicker lashes?  I can't use eye makeup due to sensitive eyes and would love to have more there.

To all those just starting out, it does get better. I can't believe all that's happened in the last year and a half.

    Blessings to you all.

Tears here too Jancie. There are still good people in this world.

5 months since my last chemo, knocking on wood, still have my eyelashes and eyebrows. And on another note (hope this isn't TMI) but I complained earlier about having darker, thicker, courser hair in private areas that I did not have pre cancer. Well it is now coming in like I had before. That being said, I am hoping that my hair and eyebrows will do the same. I colored my hair (what little I have) so I can't tell yet.

Jancie, what a wonderful story.  Thanks so much for sharing. Knowing that there are people like that makes me feel hopeful about our world.

Is there anyone else who is refusing to cut even a strand of her newly- sprouted hair? My curls are about 4 inches in the longest places, maybe 2-3 on top, and I know I would look better with a trim.  But I don't want a neat short hairstyle, I want LONG hair. And the idea of seeing any of my precious hair on the floor of a salon feels scary to me.

Just wondering if I'm alone in feeling this way....

Lauren, I did feel like that and I too want my long hair back! Artsee had told me that a teensy weensy cut will actuall help it grow. So that is what I did. It's only been a couple of weeks, I don't think it has grown much but I think it has thickened up a bit. After I finally got that teensy weensy bit cut off, you really couldn't tell I got it cut, it took off those colorless sharp tips that you reallly couldn't see anyways. I think you should "go for it". Mine is maybe 2", I have a LONG way to go!

    Jancie,

Wow! The goodness of people. You are a great example of sharing your vulnerability (rather than pretending it isn't there - specifically, sharing that you would be having chemo and needed a place to put your wigs). This allowed someone to bless you. And he was blessed too.

It is a great example all around of how human we are. How good people can be.

Thank you for sharing, I need to go cry now too!!!

Lauren, I haven't trimmed mine, either.  I honestly can't figure out how trimming the ends of hairs--which aren't living tissue--could have any effect on the activity of the hair follicles.  How could the hair follicles know the ends had been trimmed?

I do think maybe trimming off those thin, fine, colorless ends might make the hair shafts look thicker.  But I haven't had the nerve to do that, yet. Here are some pics I've taken of my hair at 2-month intervals.

This first one was taken October 14, which was 19 weeks after I finished chemo:

This one was taken December 18, which was 28 weeks after finishing:

And this one was taken today (February 16), almost 37 weeks after finishing:

Janice what a great story.  I wish I could be that open with people.  I even have problems talking to friends about my problems.

My hair is comming in Nicely had a trim just to tidy it up. How long after treatments is it safe to start colouring it again?  Don,t like all the grey that showed up.

Nope, tbird57.  My hair has always been stick-straight.  It would hardly take a perm when I was little (my mom kept trying, though!  LOL).

Since reaching adulthood, I've pretty much left my hair alone to do its thing.  My typical pre-chemo hairstyle was a chin-length or slightly longer "bob" that, with enough effort in the morning, curled under ever-so-slightly at the ends.  If you remember the TV series "China Beach", I was Colleen McMurphy (Dana Delaney).  In fact, I had a running joke with the woman who cuts my hair--every time I went for a haircut, she would ask, "Are we doing 'China Beach' again?" and I would say yes.

It will be a long time before I can wear my hair like that again ... if I ever do let it grow that long.

OMG, I've spent the last hour fighting with the computer trying to post pics.  I was trying to do a whole progression starting last summer but I've given up.  I finished chemo in early May of last year, so here I am, 9 months post-chemo.

Curly - the way I look most days:

    Straightened with flatiron at salon:

I just noticed this morning that the curly-curly hair in front is nearly as long as it was (as "bangs") pre-chemo.  The hair on the top of my head, at the nape of my neck, and on the back of my head, is about the same length.

What's not okay is that the hair on the sides is only about half as long as everywhere else.  What's that all about???  It's going to take forever for it to grow long enough to cover my ears, much less reach my chin again.

I've already forgotten that, 6 months ago, I was musing that I wouldn't want it that long anymore...

I had a tiny trim a week ago (last chemo was June 10, 2008) and discovered that 1) the growth was quite uneven. In the back my hair is maybe 4 inches and on top only about 2. Weird. 2) the little ends were all white. That first hair that you think has no color is really the beginning of "real" hair. 3) when the stylist blew dry, flat ironed and used lots of product on my hair, I actually looked like the "me" I remember! Unfortunately it takes so much work that I'm just going to have to get used to the curls.
