Thank you so much, Nancy & Victoria! It was definitely gray before chemo since I always had to get root touchups every 3 weeks, but I didn't know the extent of it. I've wondered why dark roots on blondes are so acceptable - to the point that it looks like some women purposely get it bleached like that, yet gray roots just look downright awful?! I just can't bring myself to get back on that merry-go-round. It's helped me a lot that one of my best galpals went gray years ago in her forties (we're both in our 57th year) since she had an allergy to hair dye. She wears her's very proudly - and long! And it looks great on her.
Each time I've got it cut, I've thought "I didn't meant that short" (always aiming for wispy too) but then 3 weeks after it's grown in again, I'm thinking about it needing another...still a bit in the hypersensitive phase I guess...

Cayh, rn4babies, and crazy: All your hair looks great! I just got mine trimmed for the 5th time and I am almost 9 months PFC. I have gotten it colored 4 times. Mainly just the roots. I love my short hair... Like Lago, probably going to keep it this way.

Did any if you ladies with light hair have it grow back in dark?

Mine came back a little darker. More pepper sprinkled with salt. It was medium brown with a little gray before I lost it. Oh, yea, now it's medium brown again, thanks to my hairdresser!

I kept a nice big lock of my hair so I could color match it later. But now, I dunno. I had medium brown now it is black and gray. I'm digging my blond wig so much, that I might go blond, unless I decide to keep the salt and pepper. Too early for me to decide, I'm very relaxed about it, unusual for me. What will be will be.

That was a great idea, Victoria (saving a lock of hair).

my original hair was a dark brown, even though I always lightened it some - I had very little gray - a few strans but really very little.. and it was poker straight with not alot of body - I had to blow dry it, curling iron it, tease it whatever to get it to be fixable.. long story to say, I wonder what my next new hair will be like - its exciting to imagine - almost like a present

I too had "sideburns" I noticed it one day and it freaked me out so i shaved them off...they have not come back...the front of my hair grows very slow and my hair came bake in curly, I just had my hairdressers cut the back so now i just have a "short" hairdo. I get lots of compliments. i have decided not to color my hair anymore because i just feel overwhelmed with chemicals at this point. A year ago i was completly bald! so I am very happy to have hair!

Lisa I had been hiliting my hair very blonde for years before chemo. So now I am back to my natural color. Which had a little more grey than I knew about. But I would say pretty much a do over for me. Got rid of all that dried up bleached blonde and now it's super healthy. I have been thinking of adding some dark streaks to make it richer but not cover the grey. I kind of like the grey but it def gives away my age now. I guess at 48 I look 50 now where as at 45 i was passing for 40 or 38.

rn4babies your hair is growing fast, looking good. You hair looks longer than mine did at the same stage, especially in the back.
CAYH you look like a model for a short hair style. Most of us cover the gray hair but your hair looks great, maybe because it has an even tone.
Victoria 'What will be will be' is the best attitude to have. I have changed my color so many times, it is mostly brown but gone dark and light I cannot seem to settle on one color for long.
IamNancy loosing you hair is not fun but I will say this I like my hair more than before. I do not know if it is because not having it made me appreciate it or I just like the new texture. The ideal phase for me was at around 1 1/2 year PFC when it looked like I styled it, to get that look in the past I would have to use the blow dryer and a brush and pray for no humidity.

Hello ladies, I have been following along since I lost my hair in September. All the information and reassurance has been so supportive. I am 14 weeks PFC and just colored my hair - how wonderfully normal that made me feel. I am fascinated by all the directions my hair is growing in and hoping gravity helps it find a more flattering look soon, but not complaining! Keep posting pics -they are so inspiring.

Hi ladies,
I tried Natural instinct double expresso and it came out red. Ugh... and I still have the white and grey. LOL Good thing weird colors are in fashion. My BF told me I have a hurricane swirl going in the back. I finished chemo Dec 26th. I have had two trims since then. Trying to let it grow now. I am happy my brows and lashes are in. Have a great day.

Can anyone recommend a good color brand? Preferably organic?

Waiting - Anything that does not have only a R or G. Next to the color number. That stands for red and/or gold. Both of those in the beginning stages can turn your hair orange. Look for color with an A For ash..it's fine if its an AR also. Ash cuts the red and doesn't let it surface.
Permanent colors strip...then put color in. This is not the best on newer hair. Temp colors deposit pigment only and are safer and actually more effective on anything still white or gray. Temp will let you pick your future color and can be done freely since there is nothing harsh in it. I started with Loreal Paris Healthy Look creme gloss - I started with 4AR and it gave it a look like I had cut it that short on purpose because of the color - they have some nice darker colors with the burgundy and violet tones. I gradually stepped down in color as my hair came in and I didn't need it as dark. I still use it after trying a million brands and occasionally will have the hairdresser throw highlites in. The highlites areas always stay lighter so I can use the temp color whenever it needs a touch up. Eventually when your hair is in for a while the reds and golds will end up as they should but in the beginning be careful..more so if its a permanent color.0 -
Have you found hair & beauty help in the Philly area?
The local ABC network affiliate in the Philadelphia area is hoping to talk with resources in the area that work with breast cancer patients on hair and makeup.
The American Cancer Society's "Look Good, Feel Better" program is well known, but are you familiar with others? Perhaps a local salon or spa or organization that helps breast cancer patients? If you know of any, please send us a PM, and we'll put you in touch with our contact.
Thank you!
p.s. Love seeing your photos on this thread; you're looking GOOD!

I don't post much.....but today is my 1 Year PFC and I just wanted to thank all the wonderful women on this board that got me thru the many hair issues I encountered during this past year of chemo!
A special thanks to AEM47.... You have provided this board with such a knowledgeable wealth of information....everything from great hair product suggestions to fantastic wig brands.
It was your kind info sharing of the specific Monika wig that got me thru some of the most difficult days. I can't tell you just how many compliments I received wearing this wig...and it was so realistic and affordable. I think I may even like it better than my real hair...LOL!
MizMarie...I am still using your suggestion of Garnier HerbaShine Haircolor. It worked great......effectively coloring my fragile chemo hair from the start. I am sad because I think they are actually discontinuing it!
And of course LAGO.....it was your linky of the hair growth progression that gave me inspiration from the very start of this journey!
Thank you all and if I can figure out how to post a photo...... I will try to post a 1 yr PFC photo.0 -
They're discontinuing Garnier HerbaShine!! Yikes, that's what I've been using, better stock up!

Ella OMG you're going to make me cry. I'm more than happy to help others. That's why I'm still here. This about the time your hair will start to get normal. I got my shine back about 1 year PFC. It's really all up hill from here on out!

WaveWhisperer, although we're hoping to get a more direct way to post photos in place eventually (pesky budgets!), for now you need to have your photos hosted somewhere else, such as Photobucket or Flickr, Facebook, your own domain, or the hosting area your ISP provides.
Once the photo is hosted online, check the Help section in the blue navigation menu of these boards for instructions. If you run into problems, let us know, and we'll try to help.
p.s. Not long ago I opened a Photobucket account just for posting here, and found it really easy and intuitive - and free too!

Ella - thank you that was nice ! I loved that Monika wig! I actually got two - one was darker to try to transition from being blonde when my hair departed and almost black when it came in! But I only wore the dark one twice since I couldn't wait to go topless.
Well today I realized I am no longer growing my hair in...I'm trying to keep an actual style. In the past 5 weeks, I have had 3 haircuts - today knocking off about 3 inches of curls. It has started to grow freakishly fast over the last couple months and I've actually backed off of the biotin - anyone else going thru an unexplained growth spurt??0 -
Hair does that. It has a resting period, dies/falls out, then starts to grow again. You didn't notice it before because your hairs were on different clocks. It might be that many of your hairs are on the same clock.

Is this the Monika wig?
http://www.acewigs.com/shop/wigs/Estetica_Designs_Wigs/33216.php
If so, I really like it. I have an Estetica wig that I bought last week - a new one called "Devin." The caps are so comfortable! I really have wig remorse with my first one but not with this Estetica wig.
Also, for those looking to host photos, I find that www.imgur.com is relatively simple to use and you don't need to have an account to use the site. You can upload from your computer or the web.

The words "freakishly fast" (when it comes to hair) are like music to my ears (or in this case, eyes)!

my first wig is by Estetica/Jordan .. never could get use to it... now I just bought a Gabor/Instinct and its a world of different comfortwise.. I guess when we are wig novices it pays to slow down and really try different brands/styles on.. The first one I was more concerned at matching my color and I hadn't lost all my hair yet.. once I did it felt itchy and kept riding up in the back.. this new one was comfy from the start..fortunately, they aren't that expensive.

LeeA - that is certainly the wig - it's such a versatile wig I even put clips in to dress it up at times - got a million compliments on that wig! I got one that had the highlites which was soo realistic.

http://crickettsanswerforcancer.org/ is a great organization who will buy you a wig. I contacted them and they paid for a massage for me. They also will help you out with wigs, mastectomy bras, lymphedema sleeves and other services we BC patients need. Go to their website and click on services.

..I have stalked this board for a long time...I am Five weeks PFC and don't see regrowth yet. I held onto about 20% of my hair during chemo and that is growing a bit but not any new growth....when do u think it will start to grow. I see growth on my legs and peach fuzz on my face. I just want some perspective.

Runnergirl,
I finished Chemo on Jan 9th. Hair just started growing this week. Also, lost my evebrows and lashes two weeks ago but they have already started growing back really fast. This is the third time I have lost lashes and brows. Hopefully, this will be the last time. I just started taking Biotin which is suppose to promote hair growth. I did ask my MO about it and she said it was fine to take. Good luck with your hair. Marianne
