i don't normally post here, but as i prep for my first "cleanup" now that hair is growing back in - I wanted to share about the place I'm going to. If anyone is in Long Island New York - might be worth trying (although I'll know more once I go). They are called Racines in Islip. There is a documentary coming out about them. Check out the trailer at this link. But get your tissue box ready! mondaysatracine.com

Ellen, thank you for your recommendation! We'll pass along the information.

ramols, I don't know if they're looking as far as New York, but we'll send your recommendation to the TV folks too. Also edited your post to make the link clickable. And thanks for the warning about having the tissue box ready; needed it!

Runnergirl:  I finished chemo on 6/28.  I had my hair trimmed a little around my ears to tame the wild ones around the first week in September.  Stopped wear the wig on 9/15--tore it off at my son's wedding reception.  I have had four haircuts since then.  I will try to post a pic next week.  My hair was fine and straight, with a little bit of an annoying bend.  Now it's soft, thick, and curly..Very curly.  I leave the back go, but striaghten out the front.  I get so many compliments on my new "haircut".  Hang in there....Once it starts, it will take off and grow like a weed. (PS--I had C/T as well!)

Hey girls! I am 10 months pfc. I just wanted to mention that I tried the new Olia hair dye...ammonia free...love it! The colour turned out perfect and covered the greys. I have had two trims...keeping the sides and back short til the top gets longer...then I will start growing it out.

Runnergirl, my last chemo was 1/29 so I'm anxiously waiting for hair growth too.  When I buzzed it off, I didn't shave it right down to the skin, left a little stubble.  And when it fell out, it didn't ALL fall out, so I've had this very faint haze of stubble left all along.  It makes it a little hard to tell if there's anything new coming in.  Every day I look and wonder, maybe it's a little thicker?  A little longer?  Maybe....   LOL!

It can just stay gone on my legs & armpits forever if it wants, though.....  ha ha ha!

Quick question, does your head itch when the hair starts growing back?  My scalp has been kinda itchy lately, I hope that is a good sign.

I am very thankful that my eyebrows & eyelashes did hang on, although somewhat thinned out.

I see you said your scalp itches but has anyone had their hair/head hurt when it came back in?  I am 8 months last chemo and I have about 1-1/2 to 2 inches of hair.  My scalp literally hurts!!  Not sure if this is common or not.

mt4ever my scalp was sore when it came back. I have a high tolerance to pain so I'm sure it might be a bit more annoying to others than it was for me.

lago I have a pretty high tolerance to pain also so that is why I was checking.  It is hurting but I pretty much just go on!  I have also had a headache for a couple of weeks now that may dull but never completely goes away.  So trying to evaluate whether something else is going on!  Thanks for your input!!  Smile

I agree with lago ... you should let your oncologist know about your headache if you have had it for two weeks.

In general, cancer diagnosis or not, when you pass two weeks with many symptoms, aches, pains, etc. it is most often time to speak with a health care professional. Of course there are times to seek care earlier.

We're not doctors ... I don't even play one on TV. Check with the pros.

Thanks guys!  I will see my RO on Wednesday and maybe I can catch my MO in the office too!  I was kind of leaning towards that anyway but you just never know who to ask...your regular doc or the MO?  When do you officially quit asking MO things and just rely on your regular doc?

I am taking 1 Biotin a day while on chemo, always have.  It seems to help the hair grow.

ML4ever, I have come to like and trust my MO so much that she's my first choice when I have almost any issue, because my fear, of course, is that it's related to cancer. My PCP was never all that involved during my BC ordeal, so I always wonder whether she's looking at the whole picture.

mt4ever For most things I go to my PCP first. But for things like headaches that are really painful and have been going on for more than 2 weeks or bone pain for more than 3-4 weeks I would contact my onc.

But that might not be best. I know I had a rash and went to my PCP. We were watching it. Then I went for herceptin and told the chemo nurse. She got all excited, told my onc. Onc wanted me to go to the super special dermatologist, yadda, yadda,  yadda. About a week before my super special dermatologist appointment the rash went away. So I canceled. My onc will check any of those things out. So I want to be sure it is something to worry about.

The first 2-3 years though you really want to watch this stuff. Seems like I've seen most of the recurrences in the first 2 years. Never hurts to call. Does hurt to wait too long or not mention at all.

I advise always mentioning problems to your MO. Everytime I had an issue that i waited on it enende up having a solution. Don't suffer in silence. One time i had a pain where i thought my ovary was waited...went to my gyn thinking it was yet another SE and she sent me right to ther Hospital and I had to have my appendicts out! the surgeon said why did you wait so long?, so now I ask my Doctor about everything!

Pands never had that problem, but i would mention it maybe they can give you something to rub on your head

    Lago,

Maybe you might know this.  I am finally growing a little stubble cover on my head. (almost 5 wks pfc, but still herceptin every 3 wks).  It looks like it is growing in white.  I never had much grey prior to tx.  The hair on the back of my head looks light brown, at least  there is a pigment.  Did you have this?

Waitingforthenextstep I actually didn't watch my hair come in at first because of something I read after my first tx about hair not coming back I thought for sure it would be me. So I never saw the white stuff but other's did. My hair did grow back grey and black. I did have some grey before but my hair color was dark brown not black. I also had been coloring for 9 years so not sure exactly how much grey. Also you are on a different chemo than I was. I do think it might grow in differently depending on the chemo. But eventually my hair came back to  my old hair. About 12 months the texture started to come back…and all nice and shiny again.

Don't shave it off.  I would be grateful for any hair, bozo or not.  It's only color, it will go away, fade away, or you can try to dye it again.

waitingforthenextstep- My hair has come back dark as well. It was red prior to chemo. I have had it colored and it is getting there.  My hair dresser has trimmed the ends twice and it is much better. It is getting thicker, but as it grows it is getting curlier. I don't mind at all. Hair is good. My hair always grew fast. My finger nails do too. I used Nioxin prior to chemo and am still using it. I am amazed how much my hair has grown. I am almost 5 months pfc. I lost about 70% of my hair and refused to shave the rest. I am glad because it is filling in. I have noticed hair on the sides of my face that weren't there before and a mustache over my upper lip. I freaked out and got some facial cream bleach.

    Waiting,

I am leaving it. I talked to a couple hairdressers yesterday. They looked at it. They said try ash brown to take out red. I think I won't bother. It might end up worse. So wearing my head scarf to church today. Not a big deal but was ashock to see orange. LOL

mareluna I had my hair dresser dye mine. We used the same stuff I used before chemo, brown with a little red. It came out too red for me (although it was a cool color). He did it again with more brown. The next time we took most of the red out.

mareluna  my hair also turned a little orange the first time.  In addition the color did not take evenly so I had spots of different shades.  I went back the next day and had it colored again, it looked much better.

I have been down the Chemo road, with OVCA  now have mets to the liver (BC Mets) and on abraxene, I have had two infusions, and now hair is everywhere, why is it not easier, last time was 03, so long ago and I was younger. I guess time to shave.

What did all of you do when it was all over the place?
