Lainey, that coworker comment is another one for the "Worst Thing Someone's Ever Said To You" thread. Good grief!

As for permanent hair color...  All I can say is that I impulsively did a semipermanent colorwash about a year ago and looked like Elvira.  You can wash and wash and wash with baby shampoo or dandruff shampoo to help cut the color, but I was a dark haired lass for longer than I wanted to be.  It was pretty hilarious!  So if it says permanent... I think you might need the services of a professional to help get it out.

Jamieh, I can't believe DH said that.  Maybe you aren't responding because you are in jail for attempting to strangle Dear Husband.  I'm sure he'll tell the cops, "You'll recognize her because she has NO EYELASHES."

    Hello!

Has anyone heard of taking Bao Shi, a Chinese herbal supplement, for hair growth?  An acquaintance told me that she and her man of her friends take it for their thinning hair and works.

Lainey...Semi-permanent color last anywhere from from 4-6 weeks and sometimes it lasts longer depending on the brand, but permanent color stays on till cut off. But it will fade every time you wash it. If it is dark right now, it will fade down to the next level of color with some red (brassiness) in it if you don't re-color the outgrowth and retouch the rest every 4 weeks or so depending on how fast your hair grows.

Hi there ladies - very nice to meet you.

This is a really excellent thread - I am boning up on lots of info and I just wonder, did anyone you know try the cold cap thingy to try to retain any hair?  I would be interested to hear about it.

My natural hair colour is auburn with a bit of grey at the temples. I guess once I commence treatment  I'll get a horrible shock sometime because needless to say, I've been colouringthe gre for quite some time!  I wonder whether colouring to a blond shade might look good for a while?  Any thoughts girls?

Ahem, may I ask, when the hair starts growing back in the  the area of the Godess, is it itchy?

big hugs to all and thanks for all the info

Welcome London.  Depending on when you are starting treatment, don't bother to color now.  Most gals start losing hair around day 15 after the first tx.  And when the "southern" hair starts to grow back, it is not itchy.

Okay I didn't get locked up YET :)  but the backside who is normally wonderful laughed at me yesterday when I asked him to take a picture of my hair.  Then he said "don't you mean lack of hair".....grrrrr.....  Then admitted to me that I have a couple of hairs on my head.  Jack-hole!!!  I have duck hair and he doesn't consider it hair.  He's just mad I never let him shave my head bald after giving me the buzz cut I refused to let him near my head.  He actually used my pro clippers and managed to pull the clippers thru my head pulling hair out.  After that my hair was off limit to him.  I know he didn't mean to do it but I wasn't taking a chance with a regular razor.

Like I told someone else recently.  Just as the only answer to any question a pregnant woman asks is "you are still so tiny I can't tell you're pregnant until you turn around."  The only thing to say to someone growing out their hair after chemo is "it is growing in so nice, and you look so wonderful, you could keep it that way forever and look beautiful."  And it must be said with a straight face and totally sincere look.

Jaimieh - oooh, he must have been having the chemo brain when he said that to you!  I wouldn't let my husband near me with anything but clippers and a guard either - no way in the world that man was coming at me with anything that was sharp - I've seen the poor dogs after they've been groomed.  Yell

Lisa1964 - my natural hair color is a dark brown - I don't remember what my base color was, 5G or something like that?  I've been wearing it just a shade or two lighter, a very rich brown.

Happy to report that in the mirror, it finally looks like I have 5 O'Clock shadow.  I think something is growing!

I went to the docs today with no head cover.  I am headed back out for several more errands and I plan on staying topless.

Lisa - you are so nice!!  I really am looking forward to meeting you next week!!  How is your schedule for either Monday, the 1st at around 3-ish, or maybe Saturday, the 6th, any time?  Whatever works best for you.

Deb, I am wearing my ballcap or bandana out on errands, etc.  Just limiting the wig to work and for some occasions, but I agree - it is too warm out for the wig, especially down here, every day!

hmmm, should i be calling my "peach fuzz" "duck hair" instead? i've never heard of that one! i just love how it feels. sooooo soft!

i can't bear the thought of my eyelashes coming in only to fall out again. *sniffle*

i've gotten quite good at filling in my brows, even without the stencils. Anastasia's Brow Ex-press kit totally rocks!

i can't wait to have my new hair trimmed and styled next month when i go to my wig angel (to have my wig trimmed and styled for a different look, to get me thru the next few months at work). my 16 yr old has never seen me without my wig or a scarf or hat - i've been too afraid to traumatize him, except i'm realizing now that he's been traumatized by the whole cancer thing anyway, seeing mom bald isn't going to make anything worse for him, right? - so  i'm going to work up the nerve later today to ask him to take some pictures so i can download them here.

have a good hair growing day ... i love that!

Going wigless and hatless was a step by step process for me.  About 6 wks or so out from chemo I couldn't stand the heat anymore.  I started going hatless when walking my dog.  Then going to the store.  The first time I went to the cancer center without a hat I felt more self conscious than ever.  I felt like everyone was staring at me.  After I realized that the sky wasn't going to fall because I was out without headcover, I was finally free.  I mean, it's not our faults that we lost our hair!  I also prayed a lot about it and feel like that is what really helped.  It's fear that keeps us from doing the things that we want to do.

Lisa810, I bought the Anastacia Eyebrow express kit also and never figured out how to use it!  How in the world do you keep the stencils in place while you draw them?  LOL  At one point, my boyfriend held the stencil while I brushed in the powder. It was hilarious.  I ended up using the brown eyebrow powder on my head!  Thank goodness the brows grow back quickly. Oh gosh, I hope my lashes don't fall out again.  They are just starting to curl now with the mascara.

I didn't realize until it happened that I would also loose my eybrows and lashes.  I still have some of both, but not much.  So now I draw on the brows, trying to make them not look drawn on, and often wear fake lashes.  I hope and pray that at some point that I will be close to my old self again! :)

I haven't been brave enough to leave home without a wig yet.  I don't like wigs, but I feel even more uncomfortable without it.  I have a funny story!! LOL  I went to a local tennis store to get a couple of new outfits.   I needed a different size in one of the items so I opened the dressing room door, went out and asked the attendant if she would get it for me.  Her demeanor had totally changed from when I went in and she looked like she was distraught. She got the item and brought it back to me.  I put it on and turned around to look in the mirror.  I WASN'T WEARING MY WIG!! LOL The combination of it being so hot in the dressing room and the fact that I was having heat flashes made me take the wig off, but I had forgotten that I had done so!  I had to laugh out loud!!  It was hysterical.  It seemed to hurt her far more than it hurt me!!

tennisgirl - that is hysterical!!!  I can only imagine the saleslady's face as she backed out of the dressing area!

Kind of like my neighbors, who were innocently walking their dogs when I had my Pekingese on the front lawn on Sat. morning and she decided to book it across the yard.  I didn't know what startled them more - my dog running towards their two huge dogs, or me, streaking across the front lawn in my t-shirt nightgown, barefooted and bareheaded.  Talk about "good morning, neighbor!".

I went to get my port out today and went topless. I figured it was the hospital, they could deal with it. I did wear a baseball cap, but since I am 3 weeks out, not much hair. Also went with no make up.(Aka drawn in brows). Very liberating. I will probably do it more. Not ready to do it at work - yet.

Well I even went to the grocery with just the ballcap on..was so much cooler!!!!!!!! Of course it is a BC ballcap so I assume they know. Lots of women smiled at me though, made me feel alot better about it...I'm just tired of sweating so others can be comfortable, the heck with that, I've been through enough.......:)

    Hi all,

Your stories are so funny, they certainly help me see the humor in a difficult,(but not impossible) situation.  I saw a baseball hat on-line that said, "Coiffeur Chemo" which I thought that was funny.   I know many of you ladies from other threads so you know that I got my first chemo treatment today, so, being the planner that I am -  I have to know, did you all just shave it with clippers, then electric razor the fuzz, or is there some other technique that I need to use as initiation into the Bald and Beautiful Club?

It all depends on each individual.  I had really long hair so I opted to cut it short (2") and then had it buzzed with an electric clipper 4 days later after I was used to the idea of the short.  You want to do whatever technique is comfortable for you but you should be careful of using a regular razor because of the possible nicking.  I opted for going totally bald and letting everyone see my head but you should do whatever is right for you.

good luck, it's not so bad.

I went hatless all day today.  By the end of the day, I was really not thinking about it so much.  I would occasionally get a tiny bit un-comfortable, but then I would just tell myself  "Hey!!  I earned this!"  It really is a bit liberating.

chevel - I work until 3:30 on MTW and then I have to go straight to the ranch to bring the horses in from the heat.  So Sat. the 6th would be best for me.  Can you wait that long for the Prisims?  If not, I will meet you somewhere in Ft. Pierce for a hand off.  Just let me know.

Janet22664 - I had fairly long, past my shoulders hair that I had cut really short (pixie) about 5 days before my first chemo.  Then, about 15 days after chemo, my head and scalp started to hurt and the hair started falling out, first hairs here and there, and then clumps.  Once that happened, I shaved my head with the clippers, with a guard on, so as not to nick my head (I didn't want to get an infection . . . ha ha, I ended up with one after chemo as a reaction to the chemo).  but it felt so good on my sore head to shave the hair off, it was as if someone was pulling and pulling on my hair.  I did reshave it shortly before the second chemo, because I still had some longish stubble falling out and wanted to make it neater and have less hairs.  Now, it's started to slowly grow back (6 weeks from last chemo) and I'm not shaving anything off - whatever is on my head is staying there!

Lisa1964 - I understand about hectic during the week.  :)  Saturday will be just fine - I should have enough growth to benefit from the Prisms.

Janet, I did the exact thing as chevel.  Had the long hair cut really short just before chemo, then a shave with the guard after it started to come out in clumps, then another shave with a guard when chemo was over to tame the few hairs that never came out.  15 weeks and 2 days and I am offically hatless.Today will be my first day to go to work that way.

Chevel, we have a date for Sat the 6th!

    Morning everyone,

I have to thank everyone for the help I've received lurking here. I'm AF/AM with mixed race hair which I did love:(

My chemo was interrupted. After A/C my hair grew well in two months on the top and sides and was  silvery grey . Then I received Taxol,  2/4 treatments due to SEs,  which included   foot edema,  and neuropathy and severe balance problems, probably  due to  my Diabetes.

I'm  nearly 21/2 months out from Taxol...by far my worst chemo...  and this time hair is coming in white, looks fuzzy and  sparse with itchy bumps on the top of my head.

My head perspires a lot--hot flashes--is always wet  and I thought that the itching meant my hair was growing. NOT! My PMD gave me a steroid ointment   and I  apply sunblock to my  still nearly bald head under my scarves and hats.

Thanks for mentioning  the dermatologist. I'm sick of watching my hair grow, which I didn't do after my first chemo and I think I will find one to check my  scalp.

     Again TY,

    mina

Lisa1964 - Good for you!  That is awesome!

Janet - I had my hair cut into a pixie before chemo and then after my 2nd TX it started coming out.  My boyfriend buzzed it off with his clippers.  I still had stubble all over my head at that point.  My scalp started getting sore and the stubbles started to fall out on their own.  I wore a sleeping cap to bed to catch the hairs.
