I haven't posted in a while, I think I've been too busy trying to watch my hair grow in.  Anyway, I've been checking in on this discussion so I can see what to expect.  Mine is finally coming in pretty good - I'm 9 weeks out of chemo.  It seems to be the same color I had.  For some strange reason I saved a baggie of my original hair when it was coming out in clumps.  I've been comparing my baggie hair with my new hair and it seems to be the same.  My DH thinks I should lose my wig- he thinks I have enough hair.  I'm not quite with him on that.  My wigs looked really good- this morning a lady I work with thought my short wig was my own hair.  Said she couldn't believe how quickly my hair grown back.  I have a short wig and a long one and just wear the one that fits my mood.

My lashes and brows also got very thin.  They're starting to come in now, but still very short

Chelev - I'm sorry  about your sister, that is horrible.  I think some people just can't handle tough situations. My sister is my hairdresser and she has been so helpful - styled my wigs every time I washed them since I didn't think I could.  It made her feel like that was her part in helping me out.  She also told me she wouldn't color my hair with anything but semi-permanent for 6 months.

Lainey - you are about 50 miles down the road from me - I live in the big town of Cleburne.

Do you need anything special for a synthetic wig?  What do I need to get?

    Thanks for the help.

lester63 - I know - of all people,I really thought she'd be the most sympathetic and understanding, plus offer to help me with my wigs.  Nope.  I guess she just couldn't cope.  she didn't believe and may not still believe I actually had cancer.  Oh well.  I had my longer ones cut and styled by a very nice lady at the Cancer Society who comes to help with the wigs, now that it's too hot out, I only wear the short ones.  It's funny how people remark about the wigs, they never even noticed my hair changes before!

Jo, you can get wig shampoo at Sally's or online - Lisa1964 may have some other advice as to how to wash them - I wash mine every other week, very gently dunking them in the wig shampoo, spray on a little wig detangler and let them air dry on my porch, then brush them out and shake them into shape.  They are very easy to take care of.

chelev,,,,,,,,,,,good advice on the synthetic wigs for Jo.  Thats all I did too.  Washed it in synthetic wig shampoo (you can buy at the beauty supply places or wig shops), put it on the wire head I bought,,,,,,and just let it air dry.  Then shook it out after it was dry and put it on.  They are much better so they say than human hair wigs.  As they are cut for that style and stay that way.  Just be careful opening up the oven,,,,,,,,as Ive heard some people have singed the hairs.  lol  You can also get wig hair spray.

I actually loved my wig.  Wished my own hair would be like my wig was.  lol

To the two of you gals that are going to meet in person,,,,,,,,,very cool for you.  I met two of the ladies from another thread several months ago in person.  And it was just wonderful to meet people that we had been sharing so much with.  What was funny was,,,,,,,,,we hardly even talked about BC.  Just had a great opportunity to meet and get to know them in person.  Enjoy your meeting.

    Have a good week all.

Janet - I buzzed my hair before it fell out.  Unfortunately, I didn't cut it short enough.  I had very thick hair, so when it fell out (mostly when I washed it) I clogged up the shower.  I should have shaved it with an electric razor.  Ended up using a lot of Draino that week.  Just FYI in case you have thick hair too.

I washed my wigs with Woolite.  The lady at the wig shop recommended it.  I had a detangler that I would spray on them and comb them out and hang them in various places around the house (where the cat couldn't get at them!).

Lester - hi there neighbor!  I've heard of Cleburne but have yet to visit.  I bet you should listen to your hubby and ditch the wigs!  It's too darn hot here in Texas this time of the year.

Chelev--Sorry about your sister.  My sisters haven't ever offered to help me and in fact when I finally saw them during Mother's Day,  the sister who is the eldest, wanted me to take my wig off so she could see me bald.  That really irked me!!!!!

Just a note to say that I found Matrix Prizms online and ordered a tube of Golden Brown.  Can't wait 'til it arrives -- maybe by then I'll be ready to ditch the hats and wear my short new do.

Hope you are all doing well.  --bonnie

I just started chemo... one week ago.  W-a-i-t-i-n-g for the first hair to come out.. and I'm so-o-o sad about it.  I love my hair.  Freaking out about the eyelashes/eyebrows.  Like losing our hair isn't enough?!!  I'm on a journey I don't want to take - so glad to have all these threads to help me get through.

leftyAKAnancy:  Wow....looks great.  There is a class coming soon to my hospital and I really want to attend.  I cut my hair short, but i haven't started treatment yet.

What can I expect from the workshop?

You will receive a tote bag full of full size cosmetics and helpful hints how to use them for your facial type and skin tone.  you get to keep the cosmetics and tote bag and there is a very good booklet with step by step instructions.

They should have various kinds of head coverings, including scarves, turbans, wigs and hats and you can try them on.   The best part was meeting other women with cancer and knowing I was not the only bald one out there having a major identity crisis when I looked in the mirror.

You might want to take your own magnifying mirror if you "normally" use one for make up application.  Have fun !!!

Thanks Lefty for the info,  should I wait until I am actually bald before attending a workshop?

I went to the Look Good Feel Better event that same day I found out I had to have chemo and would lose my hair so I was pretty emotional. The woman from the American Cancer Society was very nice and there were several volunteers there who helped people with their makeup and wigs. They gave us each a makeup kit for our skin color and many of the women got to take a wig home. I wanted a wig that is very much like my own hair, short and spikey and salt and pepper. They are ordering it for me tomorrow--apparently they only place a wig order once a month. I should get it in time for my June 18 appt with my hairdresser to have her shave off my hair (have my first chemo June 4) and style/cut my wig. The event was a good experience--four breast cancer gals and three lung We were supposed to see a brief 3 minute(?) video but the machine wouldn't work. It was a great evening. And hey, I like playing with makeup!

If you click at the bottom of the link I put, you can view the video shown at the workshop. You can go before you lose your hair, but the idea is to help you find your "new look" after you have lost it, along with eyebrows and lashes.  My opinion.

    Hello Everyone!

I haven't posted in a while due the holiday and I just had surgery on Tues. (Exchange, implants and lift). I am doing pretty good! I hope everyone's hair is growing like crazy. I haven't lost my eyelashes or eyebrows completely yet. Maybe it won't happen? I was four weeks out last Monday and have a hairline!

    Congratulations to everyone going topless!

Lefty, I think you look beautiful in both pictures!  Thank you for sharing!  I never made it to my LGFB class.  It was about 8 wks into my chemo and I was feeling lousy and not up to the drive.  I sure regret not getting that awesome tote with goodies!

Kathleen, I'm glad you're doing good!  On the bright side, if you lose the brows and lashes, they do grow back pretty quickly.

Lainey - can you be more specific about how quickly the brows/lashes grow in?  I have some stubble and I am four weeks out.  Seems like I have been penciling in the brows forever!!

Deb - What part of Ohio?  I grew up in Akron and I live in Copley.  Marianne

Okay I was at the hospital boutique today and another cancer patient came in and was envious of my duck fuzz (She really made my day). She said she didn't have as much as I have and was 6 weeks out.

Go duck fuzz!!!  It's funny - my husband doesn't see much improvement in the hair dept. but my daughter saw me yesterday and commented at how much has grown in since she saw me last week.  I'm on my daughter's side.  Wore a wig today, my long one that I pulled into a ponytail and put a bandana over, it looked so much like my own hair that the nurse at the rad onc who sees me, mind you, every day, said to me, "is that your own hair?"  Uh, yeah - I paid for it!!  She forgot that she sees me every day with a bandana on.  I think I was wishful wigging.

Looked at the Nioxin follicle booster, but decided to wait until I follow up with my dermatologist for the folliculitis, just to make sure it's all healed.  Anyone using it and seeing a difference?  That will decide for me whether I spend the money on it or just try to (im)patiently  wait it out.

My last treatment was in July.  I have had 2-3 trims just to even up my hair.  I still have only about 2 1/2 inches on top, (the top is usually the last to grow back.)  I have been self conscious of my hair since I took off my wig on Christmas Day.  BUT, I started taking Biotin about 10 days ago, and it has made a big difference  OR it's a coincidence.  My hair has grown and gotten a little thicker- not self conscious now.  Hoping it will help w/ the eyebrows which keep thinning at times.  No problem with my legs though:(    My eyelashes are thinner and shorter than before treatment:(   I wish I would have started taking it sooner.

Someone asked where I found the Matrix Prizms online -- Extended Lengths Beauty Supply.

My hair is really short and really grey and I don't like the color at all.  Eyebrows are super thin and eyelashes are coming back, but still short.  I'm thinking about having eyebrows tatooed on if mine don't come back.  Is that weird or what?

I colored my grey with Prizms this morning and it worked great.  Remember ladies, grey is harder to color - especially with a semi-perm color.  If you have less than 1/4 inch of hair, do not leave it in past 15 minutes (possible scalp staining, but minimal)).  Over 1/4 inch, leave in at least 20 minutes to get the greys.  Also, DO NOT shampoo out the color, rinse thoroughly and condition.

Does anyone have a non sticky product to add a bit of shine to dull gray hair?  I will not use any kind of color product due to very sensitive skin, even to scrub soap and adhesive tape.   I may be asking too much, but I don't want any parabens in anything I use either.

lefteyakanancy - There is a great product by Farouk - but I can't think of the name.  It is "shine with light styling" gel.  It also protects from heat styling.  When my brain unfreezes, I will post the specific product.
