i had a full on anxiety attack at the drs ofc. maybe because i had to wait over an hour as though my time is not important. i finally told the nurse that i was ready to leave as i couldn't wait much longer. i was so upset that i forgot every question i was going to ask. the only thing i rember is no surgery and it is going to hurt like hell for another 2 - 3 weeks.
but......didn't smoke. drove straight home and took an ativan and then to my friend's house - to target to get more pain meds and now to group support.

Jancie,
Hoping that you got through day 17! I know that this has been a tough one for you in the past!
Here's hoping that this time is the charm!

i didn't smoke! thanks to the wonderful support by this group because dh wasn't going to be helpful at all being gone all day and is still gone and it is 8:20 pm. i have a huge calendar that i put a large green x on every day i don't smoke. it is almost like a reward to myself to put that green x on every night b/4 i go to bed. believe me the stress of waiting for that doctor today about sent me over the edge.
i believe my next critical day is day #30 because by then you know you have passed the addiction stage so you think it is ok to have one because you will just have one. you get this false sense of security that you have the habit under control.
does not work that way. the cigs taste like crap and so you remember when you actually enjoyed the taste so you keep smoking to get back to that good taste again - at least 1 pack later and by then you are hooked all over again.
being that this is attempt #13 to stop - i could write a book about it. these attempts have been over the course of 16 years. most of the time i would make it for one week and then start up all over again and not try to quit for at least 1 year. this time i am really serious - never felt this way in the past.

Good for you Jancie. Same for me as well. I quit more than a dozen times and started back up for whatever reason. THis time is different. I keep telling myself that I need to do EVERYTHING I can to keep this &*^%ing cancer away forever. THat has given me a very different sort of resolve. It makes it so much easier. Before, I would look for any little excuse to start up. Not now.
BUT if the B@st@rd cancer comes back, that's it. All bets are off.

I think I added it before, but check with your doctor too.
Years ago I quit with the help of Nicotrol. [prescription in USA but not in canada]Its soooooo MUCH better than any other nicotene assist out there! It's a little plastic cigarette, with nicotene in it. You inhale it when needed. It IS the best way to get through days with temptations, and you can take it anywhere. Within two weeks I was able to be around people who smoked without wanting one. The inhaling is a small amount of nicotene and no smoke or cancer causing caustics. No panic attacks, no depression, no antidepressents, no drugs.
Good luck everyone.

Jancie,
Congrats on forming a plan and executing it to get through your problematic day 17!!!
Good for you!!! You know, from past attempts, where your pitfalls lie both on number of days and triggers for smoking!! ALL of those past attempts have given you knowledge that will help you today! Use that knowledge to your advantage!
All of those other attempts have led you to this point, TODAY!! Think of it as training for your BIG day!!
You CAN do this!!!!
Hoping for the BEST for you! Hang in there GIRL!!!!!
Jennifer
PS... Couldn't have described the "smoking after you've quit situation" better than you did in your post! I think you've got this thing won !!

Hi all! Got my path report for the thyroid biopsy...
Bad news - it is cancer.
Good news - it is a New Primary (papillary cancer) NOT mets! So here we go on the merry-go-round again...not sure why it is adding all this funkiness to the text...0 -
Dear 02B:
I'm so sorry to hear that news!!!
I will pray that your treatment will be successful for this!!!

hugs 02bhealthy! so what is the next step?

O2 - big warm cyber (((HUGS))) for you. I may be coming your way in Feb. Going to Jerome/Sedona. Are you near there? I can come give you real hugs.
Seriously, a new primary is better than mets but still really sucks. And seriously, I will make time to come visit you in February. I'll keep in touch.
Please know that you are on my prayer list and will be for the conceivable future so I have your back!!

O2BH - just wanted to say I'm thinking of you and please continue to let us know how you are doing.
soulswithin - they have a nicotene inhaler in Canada now, it's called Nicorette Inhaler. It comes with 42 cartridges I believe. My Dh bought one, so hope it works for him :-)
As for me, I started Champix - I've quit on it before so here goes nothing! I enjoy my cigarette, that's the bad thing. The good thing about quitting is the free feeling and being able to sit in a restaraunt etc without dying for a smoke. My quit date is Nov 2nd....wish me luck plz!

Oh Michelle, I am really sorry to hear your news!
It sometimes just really isn't fair that some have to go through SO much to get to the other side! You have really had more than your fair share!!
Please know that you are in my prayers EVERY day! Prayers for strength for you, prayers for wisdom for your doctors and prayers for faith for you and your family that all will turn out OK.
I'm with Barbara in that I wish I could be there to give you a REAL hug!

Barbara - I live in Cottonwood which smack in between Jerome and Sedona. My DH is a GM for several resorts in the Sedona area...Are you staying over night or just crusin through??? Would love real hugs...
ForReal - I used the inhaler back in the days when it first came out...I found it very helpful with the cravings unfortunately it does not stop the behavior and for me it was really easy to go back to smoking the real deal. I hope it works for your DH.

O2B, been in Cottonwood (actually looking for a music store for my guitar player husband who was Jonesing to play a guitar. This was a funny story, found the address in the yellow pages, went there, they had moved. Store next door sent us to another address, and so on and so on. No hope for my baby's Jones.) and rode the Verde Canyon RR. What a lovely, relaxing and scenic day. I am making plans for Feb. Have a conference in Sedona (hate that, love Jerome and Cottonwood).
IsThisForReal, I quit with auricular stimulation. It truly worked for me and several friends I have recommended. Not sure they do it in Canada.

IsThisForReal,
Welcome and will be thinking of you on Nov 2!
There is lots of great support from people who are in various stages of quitting here if you need it.
You can do this!
Look forward to hearing more from you!

Jan,
Congrats on 38 days... And from one impatient patient to another, I hope that you are able to resume your reconstruction soon!
Barbara,
21 weeks and, by now, pretty much one day! Yaaaaaaayyy! OVER 1200 saved!!! Way to go! Yes, I know that the cruise you are going on is more than that, BUT, every bit helps! THAT will be one trip you will never forget and CAN'T wait to hear all about it!!!
Jancie,
20 days!!!! Hurray, you made it past pitfall number 1 (day 17)!!! I DO really believe that you have learned so much from your past attempts at quitting that you WILL be successful this time! You now have to believe in yourself as much as I beleive in you! You can do this!!!
Bama,
How are you feeling? Hopefully that infection has been crushed and you are doing well! Still saying prayers for you!!
Dutchy,
How are things going? Hoping all is going GREAT for you!!
Have a good night all!

CONGRATS Janice! I envy you. I have tried and tried to quit and can't seem to get through day 1! Everyday I say ok this is my last pack and by the afternoon my nails are chewed off then the kids come home from school and within the hour I am at the convience store buying a pack feeling like a failure all over again. I cannot tell you how many times I have repeated that cycle. I would give anything to be able to be strong enough to do what you have done ! I am just weak I guess and IT SUCKS really bad to think that I can beat cancer but not a frigging cigarette!
So once again I have set my quit date for tomorrow wish me luck and pray for my family lol
HUGS
