    I did it!

It hasn't been this short in over 5 years, but I did it!  Ignore the extra chin and the fact that I took this pic in the truck in the parking lot and forgot to remove the shades and....nevermind.  I did it.  I am still in control.

Fierro - It is really a very cute haircut.  If you have hot temps, it will make you feel better.  Good for you - you did do it.

Fierro you look absolutely fabulous.  Looks like a totally different person .... one that is younger and appears more confident.  I love it.  I hate having my pic taking ... never looks like me.

Girls, you are so right about the drink and a smoke.  I can even taste it as I say it.  I could have one.  But I think it is when you are out with your friends, relaxed and enjoying.  I just had a glass of wine and didn't think of it.  Here's to the drink without the smoke .... clink, clink!!

    Fierro,

That was a big step getting your hair cut so much shorter but, while scary, I bet it feels very empowering to 'poke cancer in the eye' and say take THAT at the same time! Even though I wish the circumstances were different as to why you got your cut, I must say, while you look so pretty in your avatar, you also look really great with a shorter cut!

As for the weight gain when quitting.... I did manage to put on 20 lbs some of which I attributed to quitting and some due to depression following a difficult life situation... I went with my docs opinion that I would need to be 100 lbs overweight to even approach the risk to my health of smoking... She said let's deal with the smoking now and then you can work on the weight later....

After quitting in January 2010 and making weight loss my New Years resolution in 2011 and not only not losing but gaining the last few pounds of those 20, I began an exercise regiment this past January and am proud to say I have lost 10 pounds since then and I am half way to my goal!!! I am not really dieting other than to not go nuts with eating but rather exercising 6 days a week for about an hour... No excuses...

The best part is DD, DS and DH have all joined in.... The weight is just falling off the kids ( Grrrrrr... Wish I had that metabolism again) and DH and I are having to work harder but, it can be done!

Anyway, point is... Do wht you have to do now to ditch the smokes and you can deal with the weight later!

Fierro, you are most definitely in charge and in control of your journey.  You are confrontng and overpowering two demons, one huge, one difficult but possible.  The first is the bc, you are meeting it on your terms and you look beautiful.  The courage you have shown is so remarkable for a young woman, I don't know how old you are, but in your pictures you look very young, so taking the power away from bc is all the more daunting.  The second is smoking, through all this you have been in control of the battle, even up to today by cutting your hair.  I don't think I would have had the inner fortitude to face and defeat both battles at your tender age.  You are a strong woman who just for today, will not smoke.  And you have made that your mantra for 7 weeks.  How proud your family must be of you.  How proud you must be of yourself.  Karen

Tazzy, you look beautiful the way you are!  It's the inner person that we should all look at as that's where the beauty lies.  I can see that beauty in your pic as well as your postings.  See, not smoking has made you look young way beyond your years!

Fierro - Happy Belated Birthday to you.  I would not have guessed 43 though.  I would have guessed late 30s - maybe 37 or 38.  So glad you are feeling better about all this.

Way to go Fierro... you look fantastic with the short hair.   Really does make you look younger - happy belated birthday.. .but more importantly puts you in control.... take that cancer !!

And thanks JudiH... very kind words.

And for those about to start chemo and lose their hair...... you know once you get used to it (and having it cut short is the best thing you can do) its really quite liberating having no hair.... plus it is amazing how creative you can get with scarves and hats.  And of course you can match to every outfit whereas people with hair... same boring style all the time.

And cheers on this Saturday night... here's to a drink with no smoke !

    Fierro,

I was 46 when I was diagnosed and just 5 days after my 47th b-day when I had my lumpectomy.....I remember looking down at my hospital bracelet and thinking.... Wow, that is the first time I have seen that number as my age in print...lol.

Seaside, that's funny.  I was walking around the week after, in a daze of disbelief that I had cancer.  (I felt the same as I had all along...JUST fine.)  I'm going to all of these appointments and the front desk folks kept saying (cheerfully) "Oh!  Happy Birthday!"  I remember thinking, "Are you CRAZY?  I have CANCER!"  Thankfully, that chip has since been knocked off my shoulder.  Should people stop being nice to me, just because I have cancer?  Nope.  Always accept a kindness.

Fierro, me too Jo, I would have guessed 30's also.  You really deserve all those sentiments, this is a hard road you are on and you are doing it with bravery and strength.

    Fierro...

I sooo remember that really strange, surreal time just after diagnosis.... It was truly like Alice in Wonderland falling down the rabbit hole!! Everything is just so crazy in the beginning! Add to that when I got my diagnosis my high school age son was here and knew what was going on.... My daughter was away at college and it was final exam week... So even though we knew, we had to keep it to ourselves for another 1 1/2 weeks....So hard but the right thing to do in our case......

I just turned 57 last month.  In fact, I was still in the hospital with recon surgery.  I had told my PS I did not want to be in the hospital on my b'day but that did not work out.  Oh well!  I love the present I got - the new boob.  Funny, how I am so easily amused these days - LOL!

Stupid Jaxson is messing up my timing just a bit (by the way, 40cc yesterday...YAY) but if everything works perfectly, my husband's birthday will be when I get the TE to implant swap and helping the other fight gravity to match.  I told him "What a birthday gift!  New boobs for your wife!"  LOL

It is funny what makes us laugh.

Karen - Thanks.  When I decided to have the recon surgery done, I had to wait until my busy season was over and the residents gone.  The timing was going to be such that I would have it done close to my birthday.  I wanted to make sure if I had any problems, I could get them taken care of before we leave the end of August for our cruise.   I have learned that the recon process can take time and I wanted to be completely finished well before vacation time.

Fierro - Yay!  On the 40 ccs.  Will keep my fingers crossed that you can finally reach that magic 30 cc number and get rid of Jaxson.  Trust me when I say you won't miss him at all.

Fierro6, I'm sure you dh will love his birthday gift.  What man wouldn't!

Hi all, just returned from a bridal shower and while the drive home is a short one in a car with no AC, I am writing just a short note so I can position myself in front of the AC unit.  A Happy Memorial Day, one day early especially to our veterans, Jo and Galsal.  We appreciate you each day but doubly so now when all the veterans are honored.  Noticed all the people at the shower taking smoke breaks, there are far less now than what there used to be, people are getting the message, I thank my lucky stars for finding this site and all the wonderful women on it, I absolutely couldn't have done it without you!

    Lol on the Birthday Boobs!!

    Karen,

Isn't this weather just crazy?! They have been forecasting rain everyday this week here and we have yet to see a drop... not that I'm complaining but wouldn't mind a little help from Mother Nature in watering my garden! It's not so much the heat that gets to me, it's more the humidity and it has definitely been humid these last few day!! Those estrogen suppressors do turn us into 'Hot Mamas', don't they. ;)

Memorial Day weekend has been pretty quiet at my house... DS is working all weekend then up to his GF's at night... DD is spending the weekend with a friend who's moving away this week... So been just DH and I and a whole lot of food since I didn't realize it

would just be the two of us... Oh well, Most of it can be frozen!

Thank you for the reminder as to the 'true' meaning behind this weekend!!

To Jo and Galsal (as well as all of our veterans)... Saw this quote and thought of you....

"A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.' That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it."

We DO understand it and Thank You for it!!!!

Hi Seaside, beautiful quote!  I'd also like to honor my dad, who on being rejected by the Army for WWII, for flat feet, enlisted in the Air Force as a right turret gunner, apparently did't check feet?  He flew 47 missions over Germany, bombing oil and ammunition depots.  That was almost double the average number of missions.  He was a part of this nation's Greatest American Generation.                                       This weather is unreal, no rain here either, supposed to rain today and hasn't.   I am, I fear, loosing a newly planted azalea, I have been forgetting to water, I am the worst plant owner known, I swear that plants, flowers, bushes make a cross with their branches and cry, "don't pick me", when I walk by.

seaside - Thank you for the quote.  That is short, sweet and definitely to the point.  So many do forget why Memorial Day is celebrated.  So many just think it is a long weekend from work with lots of food and beer.

Karen - Thank you.  That was kind of you to mention Memorial Day.  Good for you for not smoking.  It is hard - that I know.  At 10 1/2 months I can't say it is really getting easier.  I try to just take one day at a time since I am surrounded by smokers.

Hi Jennifer, seemed more appropriate to PM you.  Last evening from 7 PM to early this AM, between the humidity, the heat rising from downstairs and 2 glasses of wine, those hot flashes were brutal, felt like I was burning up from the inside out.  Hot Mama indeed.

I loved the quote Seaside.  It's a reminder of what our hero's do for us.  My dad was in World War II and I thank my lucky stars everyday for him and everyone who protected our countries then and now.  Good going for not smoking Karen!  Today was the first day that I said to myself "I'm so glad that I don't smoke" yet when I heard about the shower, I could just picture myself there.  Grrrrrrrrr!

    Karen and Judi,

Both of your Dads are in my thoughts and remembered with gratitude for their selfless service.... I do think the military is a calling that takes a special type of person to answer!!! I also think I read that both were Fire Fighters as well!! Again a breed apart as us NYer's can testify to after the tragedy of 9/11....

I guess I must take after my dad.  He was in the Air Force for 28 years.  I did not last that long. 20 years was enough for me.
