    D-Ann,

I haven't seen you post in a while....I hope you are doing OK.

I just wanted to thank you for all the info on Coconut oil. I have been applying the oil to my scalp psoriasis....and only since Saturday....and I hardly have any itching and the thickened areas seem to be softening, last night after I showered....I slathered it on my whole body, like a beauty treatment and woke up with hardly any red splotches on my face....

I have been a bit tired the past few days....right now I feel good, I hope my serum iron is on the mend, I am just supplementing with a multivitamin with iron.

Lisa and Floridalady, I will look into Dr.. Block, thanks for sharing,

    have a nice evening all!

Dr. Block has a treatment center near Chicago and does a lot of speaking about integrative care. If I had to do it all over again, this is the route I would have gone. Live and learn.

I know there is a lot of nutrition in apple peels, but I am too afraid of all the stuff sprayed on them, so I peel the really fancy looking ones. The organic ones to not look as pretty, but they are safe to eat completely.

I haven't read this entire thread yet, but I see a few pages back your looking for green tea from Japan.  I've been using a place called enjoyingtea.com.  I buy the organic sencha.  There's another one called rishi-tea.com.  They're teas are more expensive, but I love their sencha the best. http://www.rishi-tea.com/store/green-tea/

Also, rishi teas can be steeped 3 times, so you do get a better deal even though its quite expensive.

vivre ~  Thanks for the link to Dr. Block's site.  I just ordered his book, Life Over Cancer.  The title alone seems totally on-target for what I think we all want to accomplish.

Lisa ~ I have a question about DIM, and, by the way, thank you for that link.  Are you also taking I3C with the DIM, or are you taking DIM instead of I3C, or is I3C maybe included in the blend that particular DIM contains?  I'm already using I3C (learned about here), and when I was looking into DIM, some of the literature I picked up at Sprouts seems to say you need to take both for some sort of synergistic interaction.  I'm curious to know what you learned in researching the DIM.

Rosemary ~ I appreciate the green tea link and recommendations, too.    Deanna

Deanna I'm just taking the DIM after all the reading I did.  I also eat my brocco sprouts almost every day!

Yes, thanks for the links on the tea.  We have the rishi here in the stores!

    Lisa,

Thanks for the heads up about the program with Dr Block. It was fascinating. And his center sounds like a great place. It just goes to show that you never know where you're going to find a great doctor! (In this case, it's in Evanston, Illinois.) Keep looking until you do!

Please take action and protect Organic Standards!

    Alert Update of the Week:

HR 875 Update: Will the Real "Monsanto Bill" Please Stand Up?

News of a "Monsanto Bill to Criminalize Organic Farming" has been speeding around the internet. The Organic Consumers Fund, OCA's lobbying partner in Washington, DC, analyzed the bill and determined that we could not support food safety legislation like this that could be applied in a one-size-fits-all manner to all farms, including organic and farm-to-consumer operations -- especially a bill that references the National Animal Identification System (a voluntary USDA animal tagging program that some influential members of Congress are trying to make mandatory for every owner of even a single farm animal). With these concerns, we put out the following alert: http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_17194.cfm

Nevertheless, we were alarmed by the misleading headlines attached to anti-HR 875 alerts. Even if this bill were passed as is today, it wouldn't criminalize organic farming. The bill would require farms to have a food safety plan, allow their records to be inspected, and comply with food safety regulations. To say this is tantamount to criminalization doesn't give organic farmers enough credit.

    from the Organic Consumers Association.

This is the letter that is sent to members of the senate and congress if you click on the above link:

Dear [recipient name was inserted here],

I am writing in regards to the Food Safety Modernization Act. I agree with

the Pew Food Safety Initiative, which supports the bill, that:

"The FSMA contains key improvements that will enable federal authorities

to better ensure the safety of the food supply by requiring food companies

to implement preventive plans and meet performance standards for

contaminants in food; creating a system for certifying the safety of

imported foods; establishing a strong risk-based inspection regime for

food companies; and granting the government explicit authority over all

food-production facilities. The legislation also provides essential

enforcement tools such as mandatory recall and civil penalties."

However, I share the concerns of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund

which opposes the bill because it could be interpreted to impose onerous

regulations on small farms, especially raw milk producers who are already

unfairly targeted by state food-safety regulators. The bill should be

amended to protect local and organic producers from burdensome

one-size-fits-all legislation. We need a food safety system that is

scale-appropriate and compatible with organic system plans. Organic and

local food advocates like the Northeast Organic Farming Association's

Leafy Greens Working Group and the Community Alliance with Family Farm's

Family Farm Food Safety Campaign should have a seat at the table whenever

    food safety issues are discussed.

Hopefully, this bill will enhance the public debate over why the

industrial food production system is so unsafe. The number one thing we

could do to increase food safety among large-scale producers is to stop

    the factory farming of animals:

    1. Animals should never be fed blood, manure or slaughterhouse waste.

    2. Cows need to eat grass.

    3. Animals need to be spread out on enough land to absorb their waste.

The dangers to food safety of factory farms, also known as Confined Animal

Feeding Operations, are well documented by the Organic Consumers

Association, the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production, the

Union of Concerned Scientists, and Food & Water Watch.

Thank you for your attention to the important matter of food safety.

I posted some articles about this on another thread someone just started.  This is not coming from the goverment only this is coming from Monsanto a company that is trying to control any farming world wide.  You really need to research this company.  They send fear through me everytime their name comes up

Good morning ladies...A while back we were talking about turmeric. Two articles promoting turmeric popped up in my inbox this week that I thought I would pass along.

    http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/WBL02135/How-Does-Turmeric-Work.html

    http://organicindia.mercola.com/turmeric.aspx

    Amber-the muffins sound delicious!

I make the slow cooker steel oats in the morning too. I use a 4:1 ratio of liquid to oats. Instead of cooking in water I sometimes substitute some organic apple juice for some of the water, add chopped apples and some cinnamon. It's such a treat to wake up to ready-made hot cereal. I grind flaxseed and stir it in my cereal before I eat it. It's delicious!!

I have a water question...I have been buying purified water because our water smells so strongly of chlorine but hate having all the plastic gallon containers in my recycling bin. Can anyone recommend a water purifier or any other suggestion for good, clean water. I don't want to spend a fortune but I want clean water. Thanks.

amberyba - I'm recovering from my bilat mast.  Most days I read, but haven't been up to much posting.  I'm doing well enough, just not well enough to make me happy.  LOL  That would be instant recovery!  Drain tubes come out next Wednesday.  *sigh*  That will be very nice...at least after the procedure is over.  I think.

My brain seems to be working better, too.  That would be all the drugs from surgery moving out of my system.  That's a very, very good thing.

A friend brought me a juicer today.  I don't know if it's strong enough to do leafy greens like collards and kale.  That's what I need the most.  BUT it's a place to start, to be able to juice other stuff, so I'm happy.  Just gotta decide which superfood powder to start with.  I have lots of links on nutrition and amazon herbs, too.  I must admit, slogging thru this kind of research is much more interesting and hopeful than all the research I did on the illness side of the coin!

Glad you like the coconut oil.  I think the stuff is miraculous, and the "tree of life" label on the coconut tree is fitting.  My daughter is considering taking the stuff in capsules.  Well, my attitude is that some is better than nothing.  She's gotta start somewhere...

simvog - really appreciate the info on the monsanto bill.  This site's letter is the clearest and most concise I've found.  I signed up for newsletters, too.

I love how alla y'all share recipes n' stuff.  And, I love the shared research and info.  I have feelers out on the other threads here, but this is the only one I stick with.  I really enjoy you guys!

Thanks for the sunny words Souad and Mr. Longfellow. The sun is out early here, so I am looking forward to a nice day of family hopping! I get to annoy all my relatives as I watch them injest all kinds of unhealthy junk, while I stick to the good stuff. They keep telling me that I need to live and not be so worried about what I eat. The thing is, I am not worried at all. I am enjoying eating the healthy foods now, and I do not feel I am depriving myself at all. They are just envious, because they have no willpower.

Amber, you had me on the muffin recipe, until you got to the nuking part. I have been reading a lot about how bad microwaves are. I am trying not to use it so much.

Lili-I have a triple osmosis water filter under the counter. I have it set up so that it is easy to fill the water cooler jugs. The system costs under $150. It is definitely worth the investment. I never buy bottled water anymore-except for Pellegrino. I LOVE the stuff. Instead of soft drinks, I have a glass of pelligrino with a splash of lemon or lime juice. It is so refreshing.

D-Ann-good to see you are almost out of the woods. It is such a wonderful day when you can say all the treatments are done, and life can go on. I agree about reading. Every time I read a new book on a different aspect of natural health, I get more motivated to continue on this happy path.

Easter blessings to you all! I hope the healing sunshine is with you!

D-Ann, so gald to here from you....I wondered if you were going through some treatment....bilateral mastectomy would put me out for a while too. You sound encouraging....hope this is a good week for you and that the draintubes come out as expected wednesday.

Vivre, thanks for the comment on the "nuking". I feel much the same as you about that issue, I use the microwave more than I like...but it was a good way to try the muffin. perhaps I can try cookin it in the toaster oven....it was kind of nice to whip it up and cook it with in about 5 minutes though. thanks for the tip on the water filter.....what brand do you use of the triple osmosis? How often do you change the filter and is the maintenance easy.?

Easter Blessings to all as well, It was chilly and windy here this morning, but the afternoon was happy!

I am SO CONFUSED!  I started radiation last week, and my radiation onc. told me to stop taking co q10, Fish oil, Vitamin C and a couple other things I was taking.  (thinking I was doing my body good).  He said radiation is trying to oxidize my cells, and all of those things are anti-oxidants.  Now what?  I can't even take my melatonin, and hence haven't slept for a week.  HELP!  Tami

Most radiologist do not want you to take any antioxidants while in treatment. But there is no reason you can't continue Melatonin.  I don't agree... but for six weeks you can live without your supplements.  Just restart again when you are done.

    Hi gals,

I have a rather silly question about Burt's Bees products, if any of you have used them. Some of them (face lotion, chap stick) list Coconut oil as an ingredient, fairly high on the list & I'm wondering if you can smell it when used? I can NOT stand the smell, never get near the stuff & can smell it a mile away (hate getting behind someone in a store check-out lane that has the suntan lotion on - it stinks!!) I can't open the jars to smell it myself because they are wrapped shut & don't want to buy it & then smell it-I wouldn't use it & would have wasted the $$$.

Anybody used their products & could you smell the coconut oil??

    Crazy lady, that's me!!!!

    Valjean..

I have used Berts Bee moisturizers and lip balms and can not smell cocunut oil. If you are in a store that sells the products, just remove the cap and take a wiff of it to see if you can tolerate it.

I do this for all products just to see if I REALLY like the smell or not.

     Valjean:

If you are not sure, ask the clerk in the store to open a jar for you. If you explain that you are slightly "allergic" to coconut and the smell sometimes nauseates you, I will bet that they will be fairly sympathetic and help.

I know what you mean about odors. I bought the Burt's Bees baby cornstarch powder and I cannot stand the smell.  It never occurred to me that they would have such a strong scent on a product for babies. I ended up having to throw out the overpriced container out and am using pure cornstarch as talc.

Hi, Val ~  I have extremely sensitive skin, and I don't have any problem returning a cosmetics item that I really don't like after I've tried it.  Most department stores and drugstores will take a return, as long as you have a valid reason like you're allergic to it, including the smell.  They're always sympathetic, and I've never had a problem.  Of course, I don't do it often -- maybe once a year, and not to the same store.  But if I've spent $$$ on it and it disappoints to the degree that I can't use it, if my DH doesn't want it (my first back up plan; he inherits a lot of moisturizers this way), then back it goes.    Deanna

Thanks to all ~ I always open a jar or bottle of lotion/face cream, whatever, to smell it, but these stupid "for our own safety" (which I understand), inner seals/shrink wrap seals means I can't do or shouldn't do in the store, so.... I think I'll see if someone can let me open one or I'll just buy it & if I don't like it, I'll return it. It's just the hassle of it all, but, whatever works.

I'm just trying to find a good face &/or body lotion without paraben & related bad stuff in it without buying something online where you have to pay for shipping.

Thanks again y'all ~ have a wonderful day!

Thank you! That is exactly what I wanted to know. Someone who likes coconut might pick up on the scent of it & say, "Oh, I like that smell." because they like coconut. Someone who doesn't like it would pick up the scent immediately, like me.  :D

I wanted to ask you all if you eat much pasta, and, if so, has anyone found a healthy kind that tastes good?  Obviously, most are made with a type of white flour, even the more natural, imported brands.  In recent months I've tried some gluten-free brands made with brown rice, corn and a corn/quinoa blend, but I didn't like any of them enough to buy them again.  We don't eat a lot of pasta, but occasionally I'd like to be able to make a pasta dish that really tastes delicious and that would be better for us than De Cecco (my favorite), etc.    Deanna

Deann-I have not been able to find any pasta that does not taste as good as the Italian stuff. Being of Italian descent, I just gave up on any replacement. I still have my pasta, but not often and when I do, I just have a very small amount, and douse it with my homemade sauce so it is almost like a soup. I get all the flavor without the carb loading. We do need to watch what we eat, but we also have to enjoy life. Remember if we are eating right 80% of the time, we are in a healthy lifestyle category.

Valjean, you must have missed my recipe for body moisturizer so I will give it again. I liked using grapeseed oil because it is such a great antioxidant, but I found it hard to apply. I was a fraid of the coocnut oil because I too hate the smell, but was pleasantly surprised that the coconut oil does not smell at all. However, it is so solid it is also hard to apply. So I just blended the two with a little coco chanel # 5 and VIOLA! My own great body butter that is easy to apply and feels and smells great. Try it!

Idaho-I took some supplements during rads. My radiologist said it was okay as long as I did not overdo it. I took a multi and omega 3. I also took melatonin at bedtime, because as you know, it is tough to sleep with all this going on in your head. I figured the melatonin was much safer than the sleeping drugs my docs were willing to prescribe. All I can say is that  I breezed through rads physically. The daily walks helped a lot too, and helped me unload all the emotional crap that was so important to recovery.

Gotta love the red apples. The only thing is, in the Anti-Cancer-A New Way of Life book, he says if apples are not organic, peel the skin off (I guess to avoid toxins).  Is it the skins that are the source of the good stuff? If so,I better find organic.... (not a bad idea anyway I guess).

Deanna, will keep an eye out for vanilla oat milk.  Is it refrigerated or out there on the shelves like the Rice milk? (I found refrigerate/carton Almond milk better than out there on the shelves Almond milk in a box)
