THANK YOU, girls, so very much! I'm already home and doing great. My mastectomy was at 12:00 and I'm already home from the hospital! (For me, that's a good thing... I was dreading the overnight hospital stay almost as much as the surgery itself!)
I checked in at 10:00, they had me prepped and in the O.R. by a quarter to 12, surgery at 12, I was waking up (groggy) by 1:30, and by 3:00 a volunteer was in my room to wheel me to my parents car! Talk about drive-by mastectomy, BUT, I much preferred it that way... I didn't have any complications, only one side was done, no nodes were taken, no reconstruction whatsoever yet, and all went swimmingly well.
Best of all - the preliminary biopsy of the cells under the nipple came back BENIGN so (at least for now) I still have my nipple! HOORAYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!! I was so happy when he told me that I nearly cried.
I have one drain, and the whole emptying/measuring thing isn't as bad so far as I had dreaded. I took an extra-good shower this morning though in case I am just not up for a full shower in the morning... hehe. All in all, it went as well as it could have, and although I'm still dreading what I will see when I first look under the wrap, I'm feeling okay about things for now and looking forward to moving on with reconstruction and baby-making (not necessarily in that order!).

Julia: What great news!! So happy for you that all went well and that you are back home recovering and in good spirits. Having a mastectomy can be traumatic (I had a B MX so I know...) but you are taking it well and positive thinking will get you far. You need to rest and take it easy. Trust me, it's the best thing right now. You don't want that drain to stay in any longer than it has to!

Wow! Already home shhhsh...Oh, what a relief it is huh! That's great the biopsy result was benign. I had one also. My surgeon wanted to remove my nipple. I didn't want to, so comprimised with a biopsy. I had a nipple/skin sparring mx. I think you will heal quickly because of foregoing the reconstruction, and no axillary nodes were taken. The drains are mostly just an inconvience. Take care of yourself and get plenty of rest. I forgot to send you my homeopathic prevention for swelling and bruising. I'll PM you with it

Sam: About Steel cut oats in the UK: don't know where in the UK you are but they are available at Holland & Barrett, Marks & Spencer, and some Waitrose. In Ireland they are available at Superquinn. They are also known as Pinhead oats in the UK. What is amusing is that McGann's Irish steel cut oats are available at many supermakets in the States--but I just read on a UK board that most of these McGann's are exported to the States. However, they are available at Ocado.

My second surgery, I was given the option to stay the night at the hospital. I was tempted, but so glad I didn't when the hospital bills came in.0 -

MBJ: yes, Kouragio means Courage in greek..This is what I aspire to having when the times get tough. My mother used to tell me "courage wil get you through anything", she was an amazing woman.
Julia: Congratulations..you make such a major operation sound like a walk in the park! This is true courage!

I called my mother-in-law soon after I got home yesterday (my hubby was supposed to call her the instant I woke up, but of course he forgot) and spoke with my aunt on the phone... both of them said they were amazed that I was home already and sounded so good and "normal" (LOL)... my aunt said "You're amazing!" which made my day, but really, it's my awesome surgeon and entire team who are amazing... they will be getting an Edible Arrangements bouquet from me very soon.
When I think back on the first two surgeons I met with -- one of whom talked to me like I was four years old, and the other gave me scare tactics, telling me I would die if I didn't follow standard-of-care treatment -- I am SO happy and thankful I found the amazing Dr. Fine. He told me what various standard-of-care was as well as what his recommendations were (which didn't necessarily strictly follow standard-of-care), but was totally willing to work with me on my wishes. What a difference it makes having a surgeon who is not only outstanding at surgery, but is willing to listen to the patient!!

Ask to see the video of your colonoscopy!
My doctor wouldn't let me last time but next time I'm insisting. If you have company you want to leave you can always drag out the colonoscopy DVD.I thought I'd be starved when I finished after all that fasting but I wasn't. Just thirsty.
I should get another colonoscopy soon. The doc says have one every five years but I'm always nervous after three. God knows what could be up there after three years. My spare car keys are missing and that's the only logical explanation.
