My daughter (who was dx with TNBC in 2007), takes D-Mannose and has not had a UTI since she began taking it. She had bladder surgery when she was 4 years old and again a year later, and has been on Macrodantin ever since, and many times a year. A friend of mine(also dx with TNBC), suggested this to her, and it really works. Here is an article from Jonathan Wright on D-Mannose. When taking an antibiotic some suggest to also take a probiotic.

Hello ladies. I do not have breast cancer. Have had friends and family diagnosed with breast cancer.
I am taking lugols iodine/iodide. My understanding is it can keep breast cancer from occurring. research: japanese women and american women study
I am also taking Vitamin D. Research: MD Anderson Vitamin D study. I have heard that it can scathe away breast cancer also.
I also take plant based enzymes.
I am not wanting to be controversial or talk people into taking something, however, it is worth a discussion and research for those whom are interested in aiding prevention of the disease or reoccurrence of the disease or control of the disease.

kira, I'm in a learning curve re uti's because I'm involved with my mom's doctors visits. It's a big quagmire for me because dealing with doctors drives me nuts. Mom's had so many uti's that it turned into 'urethral syndrome' which means symptoms all the time even with infection is absent.
I purchased some d mannose for her in september. Her doc gave it a 'green light' in August, but still she was reluctant to try it. I read somewhere (I think?) that d mannose works if the uti is caused by e coli. My mom's is Pseudomonas aeruginosa . She's allergic to sulfa drugs, so no bactrim. She's also a heart patient and her blood thickness is fluctuating, and they don't want her on antibiotics til it's in the proper range.
She's been going to the same primary care and same urologist literally for decades. She now has trace amounts of blood in her urine and her last uti was just 6 months ago. Seems to me that's reason for a trip to the urologist, and I'm in the process of trying to get one. I tried to get her an appointment with a different urologist, and was told that group doesn't 'share patients!' wtf kind of stupid rule is that???? She's very reluctant to see this one urologist, and I"m not sure what the reason is, and now I find out she's not ALLOWED to see someone else in the same group?
Anyway, I suggest that you get a copy of your report and see if it names a particular bacteria that caused the infection. Eighty percent of uti's are caused by e coli. The bottle I got for my mom is a white powder. It's a sugar that's indigestible for us, so it flows unaltered into the kidneys and bladder. It's what the e coli likes to eat, so in theory, they let go of the intestinal wall where they cause all that discomfort and glom onto the abundant supply in the bodily fluids and they head for the exit together.

For UTIs - a glass of cranberry juice a day

Althea, older women may be more vulnerable because of the drying out of the tissues making them more susceptable to infection. "Urethral syndrome" in a euphemism for "we don't know what it is because we could identify bacteria."
Will she try vaginal estriol or Vagifem for a month? That will rule out any vague "syndrome" if it goes away.

You've got to listen to NPR-National Public Radio. There was an interview done with Marissa Weiss-the woman who founded BC.org. She spoke on the dramatic increase in breast cancer occurrence. She spoke of HRT, genetic expression, and also what has changed in the last 100 years to account for such an increase. She said genetic disposition would not account for the increase in breast cancer. It was there 100 years ago before the rise in breast cancer. Genetic factors are attributed to only 5-10% of breast cancers, and have been there for all time in history. She attributes the increase in breast cancer over the last 100 years a result of the changes in our environment-both outside and inside of our bodies. Things that never existed in the past such as GMO's...I'm not sure which link will work, so I've included both:

Deanna...I am taking Thyadine from TriMedica...it's a liquid iodine that I add to a glass of water. I get it at a compounding pharmacy per order of my integrative medical doctor. When I first went to pick up the iodine I asked for Iodoral. The pharmacist told me to start with the Thyadine first. I didn't do the iodine loading test. They painted iodine on my arm, had me call them to let them know how long it took to absorb, and then told me how much I should take. I started with 14 drops in a class of water every morning. I have retested my iodine absorption several times since then and am now down to 8 drops of iodine in water.
Sam...Steel-cut oats are coarse-cut oats. They have been minimally processed. They look a little more like rice. They take a little longer to cook and have a nuttier taste than rolled oats.

Well, my beloved natural girls, I'm going under the knife for the third time tomorrow... the mastectomy I didn't want to have... I'm scared (not about the surgery, but about how I'll look afterward, since I'm having delayed reconstruction), but I guess I'll make it through. In the meantime, though, I'm REALLY REALLY dreading it. UGH UGH UGH
(Sorry to be a downer on a positive thread! I have to remind myself that it's okay to have a saggy boob for a while... it'll just be a sneak peek of what it will be like when I'm 90!!)
Love to you all! I'll be checking in on my iPad but probably won't be able to post unless they've fixed that!

Crunchy...Sending healing vibes and positive energy your way. Best to you.
Sam...I did a little search on finding steel-cut oats in the UK. They can be found at some health food stores, Marks and Spencer, and Holland and Barrett. If you can't find them you can also order them online.
