My terminology ? What I am saying is : bio's for women without BC would be the better choice for balancing hormones. Women with BC, not so fast...need more research or a doctor that has A LOT of experience with bio's & BC. Better? ;)

I understood your terminology Corian  Wink

The problem I have, as I've pointed out in a previous post is that a tumor may take up to or more than 10 years to develop.  What if one was to take natural HRT or bios or whatever one wants to call it, let's say at 5 years prior to dx.

That is what concerns me and is what most likely happened to me.  Not knowing I had a tumour growing inside my breast, actually had 2 tumours, undiagnosed (because machines only detect 1cm + tumours), I self medicated with the Vivitas (which I'm pretty sure is a sub-pharmaco) natural hrt with concentrated isoflavones.  Or was it the Primrose Oil I was taking for PMS (evening primrose oil does provide gamma-linolenic acid which the body needs to make estrogen).  I'm pretty sure the combo plus everything estro in my environment contributed to where I now have to sit Cry

Maybe, just maybe, if I had not $%$?&& around with my hormones that way, they would have found on autopsy when I died at the ripe old age of 95 that I did have dormant in situ breast cancer....

Aw, I get it. In a perfect world we could go back and do it all over again. I would have had my hormones monitored at least once a year for the 20 I took synthetic hormones. To see where the heck they were? Not just guess & have the doc say " here take these".

What's done is done. But from this point on, we can gather information, be aware of what we are doing to our bodies and move forward. Even shitty things happen for a reason and if we can help others not go through what we have....then some good will come out of it :) stay strong! And don't look back.

I've got an OT question for you all... How do you store your coconut oil in the summer?  At this time of year, mine is totally liquid if left at room temp, but hard as a rock if I refrigerate it.  Neither one's very easy to use.  Has anyone else living in a really hot climate figured out a way to keep it solid, but not so hard that you can't get it out of the jar?     Deanna

Hmmm...I've been keeping mine in the dark pantry and it's ok so far. I am also in a warm climate, probably in a few weeks it will be a whole different story lol! Is anyone eating coconut manna? I love it!!!!! Instead of butter or any spreadable. Omg, on a baked sweet potato...Yum! Even on my gluten free bread, so tasty!!

    Hi everyone!

Speaking of coconut, I use coconut oil often on my dry feet and dry skin.  It helps so much.  Also, I was in the store the other day and someone had in their basket some all natural, made with coconut milk, ice cream sandwiches.  I think it was like 6 or 8 mini bars for $4.99.

My mother-n-law has been on this coconut kick.  She even purchased some coconut flour for me experiment with on some baked goods.

    About the coconut oil.....

When I was in Florida,I found that my coconut oil did indeed melt as the months got warmer. So what I got into the habit of doing was keeping a small amount spooned out from the jar  and into a separate container and keeping the rest in the fridge. (the spooned-out bit is kept in my bathroom for convenience).

I find the melted coconut oil easier to manage without all the bits clinging to my faceCool

Corian, i think my coconut milk brand 'So Delicious' also makes those ice cream bars that Itsmytime2 mentions. Will be on lookout for both manna & ice cream, yummy !!

Welcome Itsmytime2 ! Don't know what Avemar is, but curious :)

I drank coconut milk for a while but the nutritionist told me to stop due to the high fat content and there's nothing wrong with cow's milk, she said...

I keep my coconut oil in the bathroom and seems to do ok with the AC on.  However when I have gone out of town and the ac will be off I put it in the frig until I get back.

Someone asked about sunscreens.  I just bought some alba botanical that is paraben free but I also bought MyChelle sunscreen that is paraben free and much lighter for my face.  I found the lady at wholefoods to be very knowledgeable about the products.  I told her I had already purchased the Alba and she was not impressed with the other ingredients in it.

I store my coconut oil directly under the AC vent in our bathroom. If I don't, it will be soupy.  I'd love to get some coconut manna... that sounds heavenly.

Thanks for the tips on sunscreen. I'm almost ready to resort to spreading pure zinc oxide at this point, as I've gotten as tan as I would ever want to be,  and the summer's already started. Just for the record, I don't like to be tan AT ALL, but the outdoor cycling really gets me dark, despite fervent application of sunscreen!!!

Someone asked for Fairy to chime in about bio-identicals.

If you go to the top of this page and click search ... put in progesterone as keyword and Fairy49 as member name you will get 199 posts.

If you click search and ...put in DIM as keyword and Fairy49 as member name you will get 109 posts about lowering estrogens with other things besides Tamox.

I mentioned once again to my gyno that I know of no other study on Tamox except the really old one that found Tamox made the rate of non recurrence go from 1 women in 100 to 2 women in 100....He did not point me toward any newer study.  my ex-onco said Tamox reduces risk by 50%.  To me, going from 1 out of 100 to 2 out 100 is a 1% increase for a total of 2%,,,not 50% reduction.

Ladies, you need bio-identical progesterone to balance your estradiol and estrone.  Then you need some natural AIs like melatonin to keep all your testosterone from turning into estradiol.  Then you need DIM or IC3 or Myomin to do all that stuff you can read about in Fairy49's posts.  She also talks a lot about the 2:16 ratio.  According to my hormone specialist, one should never ever take an estrogen  without countering it with progesterone.  You can take progesterone without taking estrogen.  Progesterone is protective.

If you take an estrogen...it should be bio-identical estriol...the "good" estrogen. Never take the fake stuff.  The drug companies cannot patent a natural hormone so they invented fake ones.  It's like when they added niacin to some fake drug for lowering cholesterol because they can't patent niacin.

Sorry, I am unable to cut and past into these posts...don't know how to disable the blocker.

Right on Luan! I also read a study a few months ago suggesting that Tamox. Only reduced 3%. I think it was from Demmark? I read that some of the Tamox studies that give a higher % have been challenged. We have to research the heavy hitting med's doctors prescribe and from different sources. Some studies for drugs are funded by the pharmaceutical companies that make them. Just as they provide funding for medical schools and hospitals....they expect a certain result. Sell my drug!

The 50% vs. 1% benefit given for Tamoxifen is the difference between a relative statistic (e.g. 1% is 50% of 2%)  and an absolute (the actual difference, or 1 vs. 2) statistic.  And what's sad is that drug companies always express a drug's benefit in relative terms, which is merely the relationship between outcomes -- not the bottom line difference.

This week's "exciting" headlines about Aromasin showing a 65% benefit in preventing first time bc is a classic example of this very misleading numbers game.  The absolute difference was something like 1.5 recurrences per 100 women in the non-Aromasin group to .5 in group taking Aromasin -- a difference of less than one per 100.

Sometimes I honestly wonder if many of our oncs even understand this.    Deanna

This is totally off topic but I was wondering something & thought this would be a safe place to ask.

Did anyone else know they had BC when the doctors said " the mass" looks like nothing serious & recheck in 6 months?

I had to beg, borrow & just about steal to get a biopsy on my

Little beastie when the radiologist recommended 6 months.

    Just curious ;)

Corian, the full fledged idiot doctor i showed my lump to told me not to worry, that it was only an abscess. had to fight with my teeth to get a second opinion

JoanDavies, are u talking about canned coconut milk ? That would probably be too rich to drink straight. we,re talking about coconut milk in a format like soy or rice milk but it,s kept in the refrigerated section at the health food store. it,s brand new in my neck of the woods. i get the vanilla flavoured, loooove vanilla

Deanna, I live in FL and I keep it in the bathroom.  I find the liquid nature of it in the summer makes it so much easier to put on. In winter when it is semisolid (or hard sometimes) I have to hold it in my hands to get it to melt before applying and I get bits all over as painterly said.

I love So Delicious. My favorite treats. Luan, SO Be (same company) has refrigerated coconut milk, very similar to soy/almond milk. I use it in place of my coffee cream.

Corian, my doctor looked me straight in the eye and said It's not cancer and I must stop thinking that way.  However he did refer me to a BS since something was happening that he couldn't diagnose.  With ILC there is a thickening not a hard lump, but there were skin and other changes.  I just knew it was cancer.  Then the doctor reading my mammogram came and looked at the US scan and they couldn't see anything.  He told me to come back in a few months.

Fortunately the BS did a core biopsy, though he said it looked normal. A week later I got the truth. There's something wrong when doctors don't know about ILC thickening.  I had a 4cm tumour and 9 lymph nodes affected.  But I'm not mad at the doctors, it's the system.  All that money goes into so called "education" to look for a hard lump.  The educators need educating!

Thank you Deanna and Luna for pointing out the correct statistics to look for with Tamoxifen and other therapies.

It's great that the old-timers point out the fruits of their long research. I too was given 50% (relative risk) advantage for Tamoxifen and then found out the absolute risk advantage was actually 1-2%.
