Micheleboots,
Iknow what you mean! If DH mows the lawn everyone can see the result of his work. But it is hard to appreciate a clean closet or toilet! Ah well, someone has to do it.

OK Girls, put down those scrub brushes and pick up a cool beverage! Happy Memorial Day to the US ladies, and happy summer to the ladies in Canada. Jojo - don't know what season you are in right now, but hope it's lovely.
I have news to share - my dear sister has decided to have a BMX as a preventative measure. Although I tested negative for the BRCA mutation, the specialists agree that there is most likely a mutation in my family genetics. Three opinions on this, all agree. Reproductive cancer on my father's side of the family - all of the kids in my father's generation had cancer. Breast cancer on my mother's side - she and her mother had it. And now there is me. Soooo - the brave girl has decided to step up and have the surgery. Cancer is just the worst - and we've all just had enough, haven't we?
She is going to do the new skin and nipple sparing procedure. Her surgery is at the end of this month. She is a single working mom, and knows that she cannot go through what I just did. Her sweet son is not happy about all of this, but seems to be rolling with the punches.
So here's to fighting. I'll be right there with her.
Oh, and Marion - I am on Tamoxifen, and have picked up a few pounds, too. I have to watch the diet more than before - it's just harder to loose the weight. Less fat and sugar, more fruit, veggies, whole grain.
Abby - feel better, friend. I hope that pain goes away.
XO, Mary

Thanks Mary! We Canadians celebrated Victoria Day last Monday so we also got a three-day weekend. This holiday celebrates Queen Victoria's birthday and is our unofficial start of summer.
Happy Memorial Day to all our US sisters! I

Marion, I too am on Tamoxifen. I'm the one that has now lost a total of 31 lbs. Like I said in a previous post it has been by going to a planned weight loss program. I had gained most of my weight prior to my dx and I didn't have to do chemo, so I can't blame it on that. Weight loss is hard no matter how or when you do it. I still have 20-30 lbs I want to lose, my goal date is Aug. 25th. I am really hoping that I make it to my goal weight. My loss seems to be slowing down. Part of that is my fault for becoming board with my diet and CHEATING! hahaha!!! I guess we all need a break sometimes... I am more motivated though, especially since my daughter has given me a date for her wedding, July 30,2011. I asked her to give me a year to plan it and pay for it and she gave me a little more. (I am still hoping it will fall through)... Am I a terrible mom? We really think she can do better than the guy she is dating (they aren't officialy engaged, no ring yet), but they have been dating for 1 1/2 yrs. O.k. Ladies I guess I may be off to look at Alfred Angelo wedding dresses later today.

I was just diagnosed with medullary breast cancer after having a lumpectomy. I had further surgery to remove the lymph nodes and had a wider incision of the left breast. I am awaiting the histology results to determine the stage of the cancer and resultant treatment. Anyone out there with medullary cancer and can shed some light? I am 54 yrs, presently going through menopause and is negative for HER 2 etc.

Trinigirl, welcome to our lovely supportive group. We are here for you when you need it. I have never heard of medullary cancer. What exactly is it...
0 -
Hi Trinigirl - Tell us more about medullary cancer. Is it different from the ER, PR and HER2 cancers?

Renee -- thanks so much for sharing your diet! It does sound very strict... maybe a little too strict for me. But kudos to you for sticking to it! My only question: how come they limit how much lettuce you can have? It has almost no calories and can fill you up. That surprised me.
Kittydog -- wow way to go on losing 40 pounds just by eating less! That ROCKS.
Jen -- I love that story about your walk with your son. How precious. I love that he wanted to take care of you... and that he wanted to know what made you like your husband. That is incredibly dear.
Mary -- your sister is brave but smart, if you ask me. My family has zero history of cancer of any kind but if I DID have that kind of history in my family I think I would do as your sister is choosing. Better to be proactive in this.
Trini -- welcome and I'm sorry you had to join us. Alas I have no information on that type of Breast Cancer but am here to give moral support at least!

MAGOB-Wow your sister is a very brave lady indeed! Best wishes for all her upcoming surgeries.

Hello ladies,
Hope you all had a nice weekend!
Mary- I agree with Pauldingmom, your sister is very brave to undergo that procedure. Hope all goes well for her and she has a speedy recovery.
Trini- I am sorry, as I also do not know of that type of BC. But, we are glad you found us and will do our very best to support you thru this.
Renee-Congratulations on your daughters upcoming wedding date! That will be so exciting for you, and a great positive thing to focus on, rather than SE's and treatments
I am getting really nervous for my walk! It is only 4 days away! I can't wait to get there and do it. Pray for good weather! I heard the forecast is calling for rain that weekend out here in Chicago, hopefully it isn't too bad.
Take care!
Hugs

Jen,
Are you raising donations?

Our walk is on June 5th too Jen. I'll put one foot in front of the other with you. What time do you walk? I believe our survivor walk starts @ 1PM-pacific daylight time.

Good Luck girls on your upcoming walk. Mom and I did it in May and I was amazed at the feelings that I felt. It was a roller coaster of up and down emotions.

Hi ladies!
Pam- Yes I took donations, I had to raise $1800 and I have so far raised $2015! So I am over $200 over my goal, I am very blessed that so many people were willing to donate.
Eph3_12- We start walking on Saturday at 7am, and the route closes at 7:30pm, then we start back up on Sunday at 7am and the closing ceremony starts at 2:30. How long is your walk? Good luck to you! Hopefully we both have good weather!
Hope you all are having a great day!
Hugs

The survivor walk is just a 1/4 mile track, but the walk is from 7AM Saturday until 7 PM Sunday all day & night, around the track. People set up tents and booths in the center. I'm just walking for a couple hours after the survivor walk & call it good!

Sounds nice! They do local walks like that here to, they are called Relay for Life walks and at the end of the walk all the cancer survivors make one lap around the track. I have heard it is really nice, but I have never done it.

Wow, you ladies doing the walk...I wish I had the emotional strength to do it. It makes me feel weepie just thinking about it. I think next year I might be ready. This year is to soon for me. I wish you both luck and I want to see pictures.
Marion, I am on Tamoxifen, but my weight has stayed the same...I lost and gained weight through my chemo, but now I am back to my original weight. I am happy with that. I do find that I am not as hungry as I use to be...I don't snack as much.
Renee, I could never follow such a strict diet....I hate to be told what I can and cann't eat...That is why I did weight watchers..love that program.

Michele- I will definitely take a bunch of pics and share them with you guys, somehow! I am getting so excited and nervous. It is supposed to rain and thunderstorm here on Saturday, I hope to God it stays away!

Congratuations on the upcoming walk. Good for you!
I am planning to participate in a run here in Canada called "CIBC Run for the Cure," It takes place in various cities across the country on October 3rd and this is the first year they are holding one where I live in Mississauga. Yesterday I found out a bunch of my co-workers are joining me and we're putting a company team together. I'm very touched, honoured and excited to raise money for the cause.
Have a wonder day ladies!

Good evening ladies. Our Internet was down for a week and I have lots of reading to catch up on. Sounds like everyone is doing great and going on with life. Isn't it great that we can think of something else besides cancer?
All you wonderful ladies that are walking this weekend, I hope the weather stays beautiful and you have a wonderful time. I am going to try and do a walk next year. They say it is pretty inspirational and makes you feel so good.
We are taking our grandson camping this weekend. We are only going two miles from the house, but we have an RV and we will be close to the lake and go for many walks and swims. I will be like JoJo, maybe I will throw a bottle into the lake and give my cancer up.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Michelle I have actually tried Weight Watchers Fast track several years ago and I gained wt on it. I stink at diets unless they are regemented. I guess that's why this has worked so well for me thus far.
Juanelle, have fun camping with your grandson. RV or no RV I'm no camper. I like the comforts of home. I have tons of friends that love to go camping, but I just never have taken a liking to it. Anyway hope you have great weather and a great time!! Throw that cancer away in a bottle and give it up!!!

I'm with you Renee, I am not a camper, but I do cottage well...In fact that is what we are doing this summer vacation. Right on the beach at Lake Ontario. AAAHHHH.

I do cottage well or cabin also Michelle... sounds great, the beach on Lake Ontario!! Have fun!!!

Well, I am back from the camping trip and we really had a good time. My grandson is 6 and he was ready to have a good time. He came with a "To Do List". Things like, swimming, play in the playground, walk the dogs, you get the drift. We did do everything on the list, at least once. We certainly didn't want to forget anything. He is a character and you can't help but have a good time with him.
Michele, have a good time on your vacation, sounds like a really good time.
Renee, I use to be like you and camping was a Motel 6 or better. But I enjoy it now. We never go too far from home, this week end we were only about 2 miles away. It is really convenient that way. You don't have to spend hours on the road, if you forget something, you just run home and get it.
Hope everyone is having a great summer so far and is getting lots of rest.

Hi Friends, RV-ers, Cottagers, and Wonderful Walkers! A special shout-out to the bottle throwers, too. Jen and Eph, be sure to tell us all about the walk - oooh I thought about you two this weekend.
Just watched Chicago win game three of the Stanley Cup - hooray for Jen's team!
The news from Texas is that it's smokin hot down here. So hot that it will make you say a bad word when you go outside, no matter WHO is standing there with you. And usually the other person says it before you manage to blurt it out. I went to buy plants for the garden, and had to leave the store. It just got too hot, and for a few seconds it seemed like I might just fold up like a cheap tent. Had a hot flash outdoors when the temperature was over 100 degrees. I may have hallucinated and gone out of body for a few moments. Next time it happens I'm going to try to transport myself to someplace exotic and wonderful - so watch for me Jojo, I may appear in Australia for a moment or two the next time I have a meltdown. You Canada ladies need to start waving your fans so some nice cool air will come down to Texas.
Love and Smooches, Mary

It was muggy here yesterday for the walk, but not unbearable. I ended walking about 2 hrs total + the survivor lap. My DD stayed all night-she got home this AM & collapsed on the couch. There was a guy who ran the whole walk-he did over 400 laps and broke a world record for the numbers of laps in a 24 hour time frame.
The survivor walk was very emotional for me this year. Last year I had just had my lumpectomy & didn't feel like I'd survived anything, but boy howdy-I feel like I've survived now!!! I did pretty good about not crying too hard until it came time for the caregiver lap-I told my DD she needed to get out there & walk it-when she got to where I was I just broke down bawling. Fortunately, she's used to me by now & was expecting it!
It was a good day!

Good morning ladies!
Well I am extremely sore, but it was all worth it! I only was able to walk 13.1 miles on Saturday, then on Sunday I walked about another 6. So, I didn't quite do 20 miles. I am kind of upset that I couldn't do more. 2 of my teammates did all 26.2 miles on Saturday and paid for it dearly! They both ended up with stress fractures and blisters like you wouldn't believe! We walked in the pouring rain on Saturday, then Saturday night it rained like crazy with high winds, and all of us in our little tents were getting soaked! Some people had their tents blow away! Then Sunday started out nice, but right before the closing ceremonies it rained, then it cleared up, then it rained again as all of the survivors were making our entrance onto the field. It was such a beautiful experience, I cannot describe the feeling of empowerment and community that you feel thru this event. It was truely amazing! I took you guys with me on my journey, like I promised
Eph3_12- Glad your walk went well~! I can tell you that the entrance of the survivors for me was surreal. I look back on it now and want to cry! I am proud of you for participating in your walk, You are amazing!
We are all amazing! I felt bad for not being able to walk as much as I wanted to, and my teammates would gently remind me, "Hey, you survived cancer, don't worry about how much you walk!" I guess that is what this is all about, just being there was enough.
Love to you all
Jen
