Well ladies, today is the day! I am the big 5-0, at the top of the hill (what a great view) joining the red hat club! On top of the big party I held in Aug., my sisters and some friends treated me to a little b-day celebration at our coffee club this morning. So I had sticky toffee cake with coffee, chocolate caramel cake (and an apple) for lunch and I have a frozen DQ Rolo cake in the freezer for supper. I must say - being 50 is proving to be very SWEET!

    Hoping everyone's weekend is enjoyable!

Slow day? Well, I wrap it up with my final hospital tale. After switching rooms twice (once per hospital request to use my room with a lift in it for a bariatric patient, once per my request to get away from a "howler monkey" patient, because I needed to sleep) I wound up in a room with a burst appendix woman. She was from out of town and her husband was there in the evening. My husband left when visiting hours ended, hers stayed and he was still there when I fell asleep around 10:30. Around 12:30 I got up to use the bathroom and noticed the t.v. was still on and he was sleeping in a chair. Well, that was weird, I thought, so I pulled my curtain to shut out the t.v. light a little, and for privacy. When they came later do my vitals, they were bringing in a recliner for the man. Not a single person bothered to ask if I was o.k. with a guy in the room all night. I guess if I could not stand it, they figured I would start squawking. The truth is I would have preferred that he was not there, but since I had already moved two times and since they were a nice couple, I decided to just roll with it. Luckily, I had a robe over my gown, so never had to think he was glimpsing my butt on the way to the bathroom (not that my butt isn't used to the exposure by now.)

After my stay, I saw that the hospital does have a practice of letting a family member stay in the room, but it said something like a same gender family member, not like the co-ed cohabitation I went through. I'm going to have to mention the weirdness of this on my questionnaire. What I mean is, I am there, vulnerable in my sleep and it would have been weird to have any non-patient stay overnight in the room, really. Did I mention he snored? Or maybe it was the wife.

I guess, if I was from out of town, I would like if they let my husband stay in the room BUT, I swear, I would ask the staff to check it with the other patient and if it was not cool, then my husband could go down the hall to the "families room" or the "consult room" of whatever it is called and doze on those chairs. If my husband did stay in the room, I think he should be enclosed in my curtain area, that the other patient would not have to have his presence in her face.

What thoughts do you have on this? Did any of you have a similar experience?

(Yes, you can turn 50 more than once or twice.) And now I know who to ask as far as what food group caramel is in? (The yummy food group, right?)

HAAAAAAAPPPPPPY BIRTHDAY BARSCO! I hope that your 50's are the best yet!

E-I'm not certain what I would do in that particular co-ed situation, but I do know that if the nurses didn't at least run it by me, I would be upset! Most likely I would be ok with it (if asked) I think. fortunately for me, the hospital I go to is a 1 patient per room hospital & the one across town pretty much is too, so I haven't had to share a room in a hospital since I was 18 & broke my leg. The place was full & since I was 18, they put me on the pediatric ward. Now that's a tough detail; It's been 41 yrs but I still remember, 1st room-mate was a 4 or 5 yr old girl who had something internally wrong with her & she was a handful for everyone! They moved her out & replaced her with a kid who was about 10 & she was in a car wreck & had multiple broken bones-she was in so much pain. I'm happy that my several hospitalizations since then have been solo!

Eli - I certainly think I would want to be asked about it b4 they brought in the recliner. Most of the hospitals around here are private rooms. I negotiated around several of the rooms that years ago were semi and don't know how we did it. When DD was born 26 years ago I had a roomie with TV and phone going all night. I'd had a section after very hard labor and a big scare and wanted to sleep. Got my a$$ out of that room double quick and into a private room. Worth every penny we had to pay.

Happy Birthday Barsco! I like your style and agree that all birthday meals for the entire day should include cake, or other similarly delicious sweets that I would normally avoid. Note to self...

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! Now that I am older and wiser, I do feel obligated to pass on some words of wisdom. Even though it seems like such a good idea at the time, one should NOT eat cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Well ... not on the same day at least.

Eph - you are certainly welcome to try it. I have almost repeated the mistake already - thanks to leftovers. (they might go stale ya know)

mac - my DH always buys halloween candy for hunting season (1st wk of Nov) so he can have a little nibble while sitting in the tree stand. But it never seems to make it till such time that it is needed.

barsco - sounds like you had a sweet weekend so I got you a Meat Cake! Happy birthday!!

My brothers and I used to look in the refrigerator at leftovers and seriously couldn't decide if it was meatloaf or banana bread - is it meat or is it cake? It's Meat Cake!

Oh I love to go to the grocery the day after Halloween, Christmas, Valentines. What diff. do I care what is written on it? I love the candy pumpkins but don't really like candy corn. Why is that when they are prob. the same thing but I think the pumpkins taste a little more something - caramel maybe.

I have 2 bars of Hershey's dark hiding in the refrig for that "someday". DH asked if we could take the choc. fudge cookies out of it now that summer is over. Nooo - I have to work some to get to them and not as likely to eat them besides I like them cold.

Off to get a glass of water. Trying to be good.

Anyone want to jump in my pocket for orthopedist visit tomorrow 1:30 Central Time?

Luv, I'm in the pockets. Yup...I'm big enough to need two pockets! Candy or any sweet isn't my prob, I'm all about carbs and salty snacks. But in deference to health, I'll bring a light tasty quiche filled with fresh veggies

HNS, our fam did the ketchup topped meatloaf, so easy to distinguish from banana bread! I found a great turkey meatloaf recipe that hub loves too, and I get two days' sandwiches from leftovers. DD makes it now too and grandson (1) gobbles it down! Note to self...make meatloaf next week!

My DS still regales people with the turkey loaf fiasco of 1991. You woulda thought I asked him to eat a vegatable or something.

    Happy Fantastic Birthday, Barsco!!!!!

Speaking of meatloaf, I just added that to my menu earlier this afternoon (as I write this late Sunday night, actually 1:30 am Monday). I'm always the one on here so very late... Eastern Time. Hey, time changes next Sunday....... hate doing that. IMHO, it is STUPID!! Messes with my sleep pattern.

In case anybody remembers that I had my mammo on the 21st, the result was Negative.

Just spent a bunch of time ordering an American Girl Doll for my Granddaughter for Christmas. Good Dolly (Golly) Miss Molly, they are COSTLY. Coulda bought myself some clothes instead of little tiny things for a doll!! She will love it though & that is ALL that matters.

(Hate that my Italic up above still does not work. Hence my using all caps on a couple of words where I normally would have used Bold or Italic.)

    Off to bed........

HNS - love the meat cake (beef cake is good too - lol). It would be very disappointing to think you are biting into banana bread only to find it is meatloaf (or vice versa).

luv - I'm in! I will bring some of the b-day cake treats that are left over. We better eat the ice cream one first.

marlegal - might just have to try that turkey meatloaf someday. See if anyone notices the difference - I am thinking that I might get the same response that Macatacmv's son had.

However, somehow there got to be an overabundance of meat in the fridge that needs to be cooked. There is ground venison, a ham (cooked buy lots of leftovers), fish that is to go in the smoker, and a chicken. I think the meal plan for the week is - eat from the fridge!

Val - so glad to hear that your mammo came back clean.

    LOL beef cake!!!!

My DD and I have been eating from the freezer this week. Mainly because I can't muster up the energy to get to the grocery store. There is definitely some mystery stuff in there, but last night we had a very good broccoli cheese soup and baked potatoes. See the wisdom I am passing down to the younger generation........ make do with what you have!

    Val, yahooooo!!!! for clean scans!!!!!!!

luv, I'm in too. Let's see I can bring some granola bars. The frozen stuff would not work for a PP.
