My Grandma taught me a lot.  Then I joined a quilting circle which really gave me the up to date ideas.  My grandma never even picked up a rotary cutter or a cutting mat.

Sheila - My mom taught me how to sew when I was young.  She used to make me quilts all the time.  When she passed away, I basically taught myself through trial and error.  I can do most quilts if I have a color picture to go along with the instructions.  I am a visual person and need to see what I am doing.

My mother also taught me how to sew.  My grandmother inspired my quilt making.

Hi Ladies!  Val so good to see you back on here and that you had a wonderful Christmas, well, that all of you great sisters had a wonderful Christmas!  I haven't been on since Christmas.  I haven't been feeling the best in the world since my surgery and have just been taking it easy.  Plus sharing the computer with my daughter is not easy.  LOL

I went to the plastic surgeon for a follow up on Monday and he said all looked great, they took off my plastic op site dressings, but I still have the stitches.  I go back next Monday and if all is well I get to go back to work on Tuesday, Jan. 4th.  Personally I am a little bored sitting around the house.  I won't be able to do anything but paperwork when I go back but that's better than sitting.  I can't even wash clothes right now.  Uggh!!

We had a wonderful Christmas, it was beautiful and White!! We got like 3-4 inches of snow here where I live.  Not all areas of Cullman got that much but we did.  It started snowing late on Christmas Eve night and snowed till late afternoon the day after Christmas.  It was so beautiful falling down.  Most of the snow had melted by Monday afternoon.  Smile  For those of you stranded in that terrible snow storm I am so sorry.  I know that it has been bad.  I've been watching the news.

mimi1964 - Glad to hear that you had a wonderful Christmas and that you are doing better.  I bet it is boring sitting around the house.  I would at least be willing to go to work and do paperwork.  Something to fill the day and keep my mind off BC.  Hope the snow goes away soon.

I now have baby back ribs in the oven - the same would go good with them.  Have some nice fresh cabatta bread from the bakery too.

I am making grilled king salmon with citrus glaze - first fresh king of the year with farro and broccoli.

Apparently, I am anemic so on Monday I will learn what they will do about that.  May not be iron based, may be B12 and folic acid deficiency causing the anemia, which happened as a result of chemo probably.

I exercised with the trainer today and I feel good because I know how important it is for me to do so.  Thankfully, I enjoy him and his demeanor as well...

What a gorgeous quilt meece.  There is a cute little quilt shop next door to my hairdressers it is called Candlelite Quilts.  It used to be a bakery and I worked there as a teenager.  The building is part of the Historical District of town.

Sheila - it's ok if others are noticing too - it took you all long enough. I have to say that there are some phrases/instructions that make me think with my gutter mind.  Plank. spread, etc.  He is clueless that this crossed my mind thankfully.  An old woman has a right to wistful remembrances of youth, right?

Hi.  This is my first post on any BC website.  I had  lumpectomy and 2nd 'clean up' surgery Oct. 1& 6th, but no adjuvent treatment yet, due to delay in oncotype DX results, biopsy on my 'good' breast (came back clean), and then a week or 2 of deliberation about BMX.

No chemo, and due to start Radiation Monday Jan. 3.  Am home from work today with sore throat and cough, and feeling discouraged/worried that this bug could delay start of radiation.  It has already been 3 months since my surgery.  Also am second-guessing my decision to not have BMX.  My regular surgeon of 8 years suggested BMX, but my oncologist thought it would be 'overkill' and the 2nd opinion from different breast surgeon thought the BMX would not make much difference in my risk for reoccurance.

On my good days I am grateful for my good prognosis, but on my bad days I am baffled and blue about having this disease - it still seems very unreal and disorienting.

I live in Alaska and drive 50 miles each way to work, so have made arrangements to stay in town with a girlfriend once I get a few weeks into the radiation.

Happy New Year to each of you - Debbie

Debbie - Welcome!  But hate to see you here with us.  Nice to have a sister from Alaska.  Do keep in mind that we are all here to support you and there is lots of good information here.

Sorry, I can't help you with the BMX - I had lumpectomy like Sheila.

We all have our good days and bad days.  Each of us has to make hard decisions and they are not easy ones.  In my opinion, once we make a decision and we have to doctors saying the same thing, we just need to accept it and move forward with it.  Otherwise, we will just drive ourselves crazy and we don't need that.

    Hi everyone!

Any Barbies that came into my house were soon headless - three girls and not one of them a doll lover Embarassed

Meece - wonderful work - I know the time and skill it takes to make something so lovely.  I have knitted since I was 8 when a neighbour taught me, sewn since I learnt at school at 10, and as an adult I have taught myself to decorate cakes (got sick of that when the hobby became a job as people started asking me to do cakes for them and I couldn't say no) and my handcraft of choice for the last 10 years or so is cross stitch. My mother didn't teach me any skills much - even taught myself to cook really - so I decided I would make sure I taught my girls but I have found it hard to interest any in handcrafts or even cooking - they would all rather sit on their computers or watch tv Frown  I have managed to teach one DD3 very basic knitting and I did get them all to do a few small cross-stitch patterns a few years ago and they can all cook enough to feed themselves properly but I feel I have failed miserably in handing on those sort of skills.  Oh well, you can lead a horse to water ...

Val -  welcome back!  Glad to hear you had lots of love and laughter.  Yep, I can imagine there being a lot of special hugs for DD1 after the last few weeks worry - bet they were very healing for both of you.

Renee - good to hear you are healing well and looking forward to going back to work.

Sheila - how much do you pay for an avocado there?  I buy them from road side stalls direct from the grower and pay NZ$2 for 4-5 depending on size.  Haven't been so many around this year - maybe they had a bad season.  Our friend who grows cherries lost his whole crop overnight with mould.  We had had a week of rain and the temps were high and he went out one morning and they were all spoiled. It is a tenuous thing to be a primary producer. My DH was talking to our friend the other day and he said you don't make money out of the crops, they just give you a living, it is the increase in land value over time that gives you the biggest return so you have to stick with it for a long time to get that return. No wonder people go bust if they go into intense crops on small pieces of land with big overheads - one or two bad years and you are being sold up!

Funny story re enjoying the beauty of others - my oldest twin has a boyfriend of 1 year - a lovely young man and he loves her dearly but he can be a bit jealous of others around her at times.  The other day she saw a good looking young man in a magazine she was reading and unwittingly said 'I am going to put him on my list'.  Her BF said 'what list' and she explained that we girls have a family thing where, if we like the look of someone, we say we would put them on our 'list' of people we would like to meet or be with.  Well, he was not impressed and said 'there will be no list and if there is I am the only one on it!'  We roared with laughter when she told us - obviously his list only has DD on it - lol.

HI Rae...LOL for the Barbies. Brought back memories DD#1 hated any kind of dolls from day one.

Every holiday or special occasion when she got one she used to look at it with dis-cress.

When she was close to 3 years old i explained to her that she should say thank you and it was okay not to play with it after company was gone.

Avocados were expensive this year $1.29-1.49. sometimes 99 cents.

we dont get any from NZ. It comes from SA or US. The best ones are from Mexico.

Kiwi also got expensive like 3 for $1

Sheila - I planked three times for 1 minute each/much harder than it sounds for an old hag.

Debbie - it sounds to me like you did the right thing and got the same recommedation we would have gotten on the mainland.  In fact, you are the first person I have read who was able to get their good breast biopsied as well.  I am someone who did not stay on the typical path after much research. I  started with lumpectomy and chemo. but then read more and met with docs and concluded that maybe I really didn't need chemo after all so I stopped halfway through.  It was shocking to have them say "you really are ok to stop, you are not a high risk and with lumenal A cancer and a low ki-67, your benefit was not really significant enough". BTW, I had an intermediate Oncotype.  Since then I have started rads.  Not bad at all so far, but then I just finished #6. 50 miles is a long haul when you are worn out - so glad you have a friend to stay with. Trust your docs. otherwise why have them right?  :)
