Congrats Maybe484!!! that is awesome my Oncs didn't even do an Oncotype score or suggest they just met and said NO chemo.

mimi - My onc did not do the test either. He said based on my biopsy path report I would not need chemo and also said the test is very expensive and sometimes doctors order it when it is not really needed. He did explain what it is and how it is done but did not feel is was necessary in my case. Hey! If it means no chemo that's great by me.

My onc didn't do the test because I was TN and the agressive behavior of the tumor required chemo.

My onc did the test because I have a family history of breast cancer. I got a 5 but wish it could have been 0. Well done!

Congrats Maybe! Wow, a zero! Amazing!
No oncotype score for me either. I think trip negs typically don't? All I know is that my tumor was too small at 3 mm. for chemo.

the sistas told me to ask the DR to do the test.I didnt have to.....she mentioned it to me....I wanted it and was sooo glad i scored 10.Nice to hear there is such a thing as a 0....YAY0

So I picked up my Oncotype Dx report today and confirmed that I indeed did receive a zero. (It says on the report that scores range from 0-100.) The report also says that the 3% recurrence rate corresponding with the zero score assumes 5 years' treatment with tamoxifen (or comparable endocrine therapy). Not sure everyone is told that by their MDs. I'm wondering how much the fact that my tumor was 100% ER+ contributed to my low Onco score? For right now, though, I'm just suspending the questioning and going with it. For once I'm happy to receive a low score on a test. Not so happy that I have my first RO appointment on Tues. . . .

Jo - I saw your mammo was benign a few pages back - congratulations!! I know you were super-stressed about it. Maybe - awesome on the "zero" oncotype score!! Val - wow, a thousand posties! Well done!!
Good morning to everybody!! I have been swept up in a whirlwind of work, auditions, my daughter's show and, of course my MR biopsy for the other boob - which was........BENIGN!!! Thank the Fates. I start chemo next week Friday. My oncologist thinks cocktails before 9:00 a.m. are totally acceptable on Fridays...I knew I liked the guy, lolol

Melmes - Mammo clear but now dealing with issues on the other end. Had a biopsy done due to 1.5 cm fibroid tumor and very thick uterine lining. Had the lining scraped and waiting for results of the biopsy which I should get on Tues. I am not really worried about it but the waiting still sucks.
Have A Great Day Sisters.

Melmes congrats on the other boob being benign. Sorry you are having to do chemo, that sucks, but hey cocktails before 9 on Fridays may make up for it.

Hi all, I had a lumpectomy last week, they told me I only had DCIS but my path. report shows that I have a very small amount of IDC and right now they tell me I am stage 1a but I am afraid that could change. Now I am scheduled for a SNB in a few day. I am extremely scared that this may have gotten into my blood stream. Anybody else go through this? Can anyone tell me if the SNB shots are painful? I am not sure if they will take more nodes if they find cancer in the SN? I hope they do but of course I hope that the SN is clean and I can go on with my radiation treatment, the possibility of chemo really, really scares me!

jpthelen - I am sorry we had to meet this way but this is the place to be. All the ladies here are very caring and supportive. Right now you need to try and relax and breath. I know this is a scary time for you. I had my SNB at the same time I had my lumpectomy so I got it over with all at once. If there is cancer in the nodes, they will remove more but I am keeping my fingers crossed that the SNB is negative and you can move on to the next step.

jpthelen: Welcome! Please know that the very beginning, where you are now, seems to be the most stressful time for many of us. You're trying to crash course into a field about which you probably knew little before, there is lots of waiting, and you feel like your life is out of your control. Scary stuff! It usually gets better once you have some concrete answers from your doctors and have a plan in place.
Please don't jump to conclusions that you'll have to get chemo and that your treatment will be horrible. Even the "worst" that you're imagining is doable - you will get through this! Sounds like your tumor was caught at a pretty early stage so take a breath and try to go one step at a time. Surgery and treatment is so individualized now and there are tests that can be done to help decide if chemo is necessary.
There are different ways to do the SNB and each facility and surgeon seem to do things a little differently. It will be difficult for any of us to tell you exactly how that will work. If you can get a little more info - such as will it be done with a radioactive tracer OR blue dye, will you be awake or will they do it after you're under anesthesia, etc - you'll know more about what to expect.
Hang in there - you can do this!!!

Melmes ~ Wonderful news on the B9 biopsy!! YAY!
jpthelen ~ Welcome. My SNB was also done at the same time as my lumpectomy. With the radioactive tracer shots there was a burning sensation. I had four shots & the nurse took me through each step; I was awake. I've had much worse pain (childbirth!) After the shots, I was transfered to a skinny gurney & placed under a large camera for a five-minute picture to track the beginning movement of the tracer. Then I was taken back to pre-op to wait for it to circulate & to be taken to the operating room. I had two sentinal nodes + 3 auxilary nodes removed & my BS told me he would have taken more during that surgery if the pathologist found cancer cells while I was under. They were all negative & with my Oncotype DX score being a 14, I did not have chemo, but had 33 Rads treatments.
Please keep us posted. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. We are here for you.

ANOTHER RE-EXCISION. !!! I am so dissapointed and now confused. Anyone else out there had to do a 2nd re-excision? What was the outcome. I feel stressed and wondering why its taking more than two tries to get clear margins. BS said I have DCIS in the inferior margins that were re-excised. Also my Oncotype is 26. Looks like I will need chemo. I see the oncologist next week. I asked whether with the re-excision, he thought he would get everthing and he said "let's hope for the best". If not, he will have to take the breast. I don't know what to think at this point. Would appreciate some input from anyone who was re re-excised and others wiith some feedback.
I told my husband, I am losing faith in my BS and he said I should not think negative just because it is taking more than two tries to get clear margins. I don't know what to think at this point. I feel bad about my oncotype score. When I try to talk about it, my BS says "Lets take one step at a time"

jpthelen- welcome...scary times but....my dye test was done the day before and then the morning of they put the needles in to locate the cancer again..they took SNs and 6 auxiliary nodes during my surgery.Think since I had told her to be sure wih the breast cancer and take a big piece that she did the same with the nodes...none had cancer.. I was told that I had 'idc with lobular features'....scared the crap out of me at the time actually....lobular features..dear god it can go anywhere, was my thought at that time...but it has been 9 months and I am calmer...can no longer be on tamoxifen and I am ok with that...
Allenan- I have not experienced them having to go back in for clear margins. When I had my surgery, I told my BS "Take a big scoop! I have enough and if you have to fix it later and even up the other one, I would be happy to become a C cup at that time!.I am not coming back on this table"....she said when she was doing the surgery she was a bit concerned about the amount she was going to take but then remembered my saying' take a big scoop!' and she went for it....My oncologist reassured me in April about the lobular features and the likelihood of my getting cancer again (low) . I did not have to have chemo. If hey need to revisit the site to ensure he margins are clear, that is a good thing for you, not a bad thing...it means hey want to ensure your health. Don't loe the faith...positive thinking helps...24 hour rule my dear...one day at a time.

I had a re-excision and it was no big deal. They got clean margins and that was that. Don't worry. It is not at all uncommon.

I also had to have a re-excision. It was much easier than the first time because I didn't need to be put to sleep, just local numbing which I much preferred.
