I had a bilateral mastectomy last Tuesday (Aug 16th) with no recon and doing very well.  Still have the drains in, but should be removed by next week.  I have an apointment with the ocon dr next week and from everything I've been told, he will probably recommend !Herceptin.  Don't know if any other chemo drug will be added to the regime..but I've so many questions about this particular drug.  Anyone out there had this treatment?  Any info would be helpful prior to my appt.  I've read all the web sites regarding Herceptin, but want info from someone who's been there.  THANKS

maryclaire - Welcome to the club no one wants to be a member of.  You have found a great bunch of very caring supportive ladies.  Glad you are doing well after you surgery.  I can not help you with the Herceptin question - I just did radiation and Tamoxifen for 5 years.  Hang with us - I know some one will come along and answer your question,

Grannydukes....heck, from what they're saying, Brooklyn might not be the place to be on Saturday either.

I hope everyone stays safe on the East Coast!

Barb...........me too, but the one at the shore probably won't.........its a 2 story, and most immediately around me are all ranch, so I am going to get the brunt of the wind coming off of Delaware Bay...............All I hope is that the Bay doesn't come up the street..........we are not a flood zone, but then again, we have never had a storm like this ........once before I moved there the water came to within 1 block of my brother-in-laws house (which is behind mine), so this could be another of those times...............I have an inground pool, and with all the rain we have already had the water level is probably high right now, so another 10-12 inches of rain from "Irene" is going to have the pool overflowing onto the deck............can't do anything about it, so all I can do is wait and see what the end result is...........................we expect similar problems in Pa. (right outside Philly), but of course we don't have the ocean, in my back yard here........Christy has already declared a State of Emergency, and is asking eveyrone to evacuate on their own, or he will make it mandatory...................fun, fun, fun

Ducky: Please be careful!!! I want to see you on here after the storm hits!!!

I have a silly question that I couldn't figure where to put it or ask it after looking at all the threads.... If my cancer is ER/PR+ and HERS2-.....IF I were to get more breast cancer, would it be the same type or for example: could it go HERS2+ or ER/PR- ??

GmaFoley - From what I have read the type of cancer could be different the second time around.  It is very possible to have DCIS instead of IDC.  Really, I know these are the kinds of things we think about and pray it does not happen.  Our new mantra should be:  THINK POSITIVE!!

YES Jo1955 - we do need to stay positive but you are the first person to explain this in a way I could understand... Thank you...

GmaFoley - You are so welcome.  Our body chemistry will change over time not only just natural aging but also with all the medications we take - specificially Tamoxifen or one of the AIs.  There is always the possiblility and a new primary cancer or a recurrance will be different.  Getting any type of cancer is a crap shoot and  if we have to do this again - at least we are much better informed and can be better advocates for ourselves.

Granny, Ducky and those that are in the path of Irene. FL gets a lot of hurricanes and the best thing to do is listen to what the weather forecasters tell you to do.... don't go out and "watch" what's going on. Now that the TV's aren't over the air any longer, a radio is your best bet when the electric goes. Remember to have batteries, water, non perishable foods, cans of food that won't need to be heated, can opener, and especially enough meds to get you through. Fill your car with gas - pumps only work when the electric works.... We've been out of power for more than 10 days during some of the storms.

Thinking of all you while you're getting ready for the landfall.... never know where it's going to be since hurricanes can turn at any time. Lets, hope it goes out to sea!

samsue............thanks and will heed your advice......my daughter wants me to come stay with her since I live alone .......I have many trees around my house, and with all the rain 13.10 inches this month, and another 10 coming Saturday into  Sunday  the ground is saturated, and the tree roots very weak...............Not sure what I am going to do yet.................I just know it is going to be extremely bad.............

Actually it will be going right over my shore home...............almost a direct hit..........well at least I won't be there to see it.............it will be a surprise when I do get down.........

We were just told by NJ emergency management..............if you stay and don't observe the mandatory evacuation.........put a 3/5 card in your shoe, with and with permanent marker write your name, address, phone number, social number, and a person to call, and put it in a shoe that ties, no flip flops, so when they find your body they can identify you.......no personnel will be sent out to rescue anymore who stays......................wow.....................I am in Pa., but of course worried about the house................amazing.

All you east coast girls - be safe and listen to the weather forcasters.  I have been through a hurricane and it is not fun.  If you are told to evacuate - do it - don't try and ride out the storm.  We want to hear from you when the storm is over.

Please, please, please, go with your daughter. You don't want to make all of us worry over thw weekend do you. Yes I'm using guilt, hey it works of my kids sometimes.

Got to say something that I hope doesn't cause jelously in anyone, but I have peach fuzz. I am so excited. Of course you have to take a flash light to see it, but it's there. I know, it's like when your baby takes their first poop. Noby cares, but you have to tell everyone.

Everyone stay safe on the East coast. Will be thinking bout and praying for you all.

Ducky... I've spent time in the closet during one of the last hurricanes that went near here. We haven't had the "eye" go directly over where I live but really close. I think the worst part of the storm is the tornado's that are spun off. Ducky if they open shelters for people to go to... perhaps you can go there.

SurvivorI probably will go to my daughters.............I hate storms, and the company would be nice......at least I can play cards, and games with my 2 grandchildren.............and 3 cheers for your "peach fuzz".............................and I care..............its another step toward feeling at least a little like yourself again.....................I'm really happy for you......................

to all my ladies.........if I go to my daughters I will be down from the computer for a little while.........she has a laptop that I can use , but I hate the damn thing, and who knows, we probably will not have service anyway................

Sad thing is I also have 2 sons with homes at the Jersey Shore in Cape May County......both of them are right off the beach............they expect a tidal surge of about 19 feet waves, and their places are 7 feet above sea level........................At least I'm off shore, but very close to the Bay.................this is the time you think about "selling".................

maryclare.....Welcome to our sisterhood  I was also Triple positive.

I want to answer all your questions if I can but I'm away for vacation until next Friday and I dont get on the computer daily. I'm very uncomfortable with my DD's lap-tap.

    I had 4 DD A/C every 2 weeks

4 DD Taxol every 2 weeks

Herceptin every week for a year which started with the first Taxol.

No Side Effects and hair started to grow and the heart tolerated very good like most people. I used to walk to the hospital for my Herceptin treatments.

They  will do a muga test (google it) to check the heart before and during.

    Good Luck

Radiation and took Femara for 5 years which was ended in March 2011.

Thanks for the reply.  I'll post next week after my onco appt and let you know the regime he recommends.  When looking through the different sites, I am stunned at the cost of chemo therapy.  Who knew????  While I do have insurance, surely it will not pay for all treatment.  Herceptin for a year....at a cost of what>>> thousands and thousands.  Doesn't seem fair that we have to endure all that goes with having BC, but to worry about expenses is too much to think about..  Hope to hear back from you.

Marieclaire welcome to the boards this is a great group of supportive ladies.  Keep us posted on your treatment and we will be here for you.

Ducky I hate hurricanes.  Lived on the coast for years and had to evacuate several times.  got lucky the whole time I lived there as the hurrican always changes course right before hitting so we never really had any bad damage just wind damage that could be fixed.

Maryclaire, I had just gone through an expensive divorce and purchased a new home right before my dx. I'm raising three small boys with very little childsupport so I know what you mean about finances. I decided in the very beginning that if I was around long enough to really worry about the finances, then it was all worth it.

Live to fight another day I say.

maryclaire my went through every line of my path report with me.  my tumor was 1.6sm if it had been 2sm he would have recommended chemo.  Also my ki67 was less thatn 10% he said had it been over %10 we would have recommended chemo.  My onco score was in the middle of intermediate  and my MO said if I could not have any peace of mind but to have chemo he would do it for me but he really could not say that he thought chemo would help me all that much. so I choose not to do it and I pray I made the rigfht decision.  I will be having a BMX next March and just knowing that I am going to have that gives me alot of pease of mind for the future.  The reason I am waiting so long is I have alot of rads damage that they want me to heal from and I also have to gain weight as I don't have enough belly fat for the reconstruction as this point.  But I do see that you are Her2+ so you will probably need Herceptin.   Good Luck and keep us posted.
