CALLING ALL STAGE I SISTERS

Charmaine - good for you! I took my DD to Claires a few years ago to get her's done and they have a really good Inverness system there and a great bacitracin product for cleaning afterward. Years ago I ran a Merle Norman Studio and we used the Inverness System there for ear piercing. There's probably a Claires at your local mall.

Charmaine...I was going through some difficult time years back (No BC related).
I had to do something and I got my ears pierced. I have 3 of them. For some reason it made me feel good. I just wanted to share. I only had 1 infection.
Good morning Everyone.
Nicole....Where are you? Are you okay? NICOOOOOLE...................

Seyla -- new avatar! Reminds me of Spring.I'm pretty anti-tattoo but I've been thinking about it lately... DH would kill me!0
-
I never had tattoos. Now I'm too old for that stuff.
One little one will be nice.
Have a nice day Gail.

I have 5 tats, got my 1st @ 39 & my last at 44. But I'm planning on a pink ribbon near my port scar soon.
0 -
Never had a tattoo, afraid of pain. Besides I think my DH would think I was nuts..
0 -
Ok, maybe not a tattoo. Maybe a fake tattoo just to p*** off the DH?
0 -
Where are you planning to put the fake tatoo?0
-
LOL Sheila!! I can't say what I just thought about where to put the fake tattoo. But in the real world you are never to old to try something new, unless you are no longer breathing. I have always been anti tattoo myself also and have really given my kids a difficult time for gettin them, however, I have considered getting a pink ribbon with Hope through it done very small on my back, foot or somewhere out of sight. But I don't like pain and quickly realize that the older I get and the more gravity sets in it will become wrinkled and not at all look like a breast cancer ribbon later on. haha!!! I see it happen sometimes to older people that have larger tats. The small ones don't usually make a big difference.

Everyone: I had a pretty good day today, decided to spoil myself in a couple of ways.
1) I got my ears pierced and Sherri not certain which system they used. The lady just held this device in her hand and put the end around my lope and I felt a pinch in my ear lobes and a bit of a sting.. she gave me a bottle of ear piercing antiseptic to take home.
seyla888: When you one time got an infection from ear piercing, how you know it was an infection. I was told to clean it with the ear piercing disinfectant at least 2 or 3 times per day using a q-tip, so hopefully that will keep me from getting an infection.
2) I also went into a Bed & Body shop and just before I entered the store I could smell how nice the place smelt.
I purchased a bottle of Shower Gel, Body Spritz and Body Lotion (scent is is Strawberry Vanilla) before chemo use to use this stuff all the time and feel that I have healed enough from chemo and radiation that I want to get back into smelling girlish again...
Well I have a 50th Birthday coming up in 1 month and 3 days, and to my surprise, my husband wanted to get me my b-day gifts early. So we went into Zellers, and bought me a nice Capri set (capri's and shirt), and a comfy throw blanket that has sleeves in it, and finally a very nice Electric Ladys Shaver that includes a bikini shaving piece... (using them lady bic shavers you get in a package always nics me).
So all in all, had a great day!

I didn't get anything numbing before mine. It hurt initially, but goes sorta numb after a while-unless you are getting a fairly large one. I have a beautiful peacock on the outside of my right thigh-took about 2.5 hrs. By the time he was doing the base of the tail (there are fancy roses on the body of the bird) I swear it felt like hamburger, but it's beautiful! He was a real artist.

JonI..My port scar never healed properly, i mean its healed but there as an inch long thick red scar. how can they put a tattoo there if the skin is still bumpy?
Charmaine...Sometimes it happens, my ear turned red and the throbbing only on one side. I took the earring off by the time it was healed the hole was gone. i waited for a while and i redid it again. I think that was my third and last piercing. So far so good.

To have a tat placed on scar tissue itself is supposed to be very painful. My port scar is irregular surface also & the tattoo artist I talked with recently told me about the pain factor & said most ink artists wouldn't put a tattoo directly onto scar tissue. I'm think about getting my pink ribbon near the port scar.

Charmaine - that's such a coincidence about the lady shaver. My birthday was this past Monday (the 26th) and I also asked for a good lady shaver as I'm tired of using the cheap Bic ones. Anyway, my DH picked up at Remington one at Wal-Mart but my mom was saying there was an even better one advertised in this week's Zeller's flyer. I had already used the Remington one, though. I think I'm going to wear capri pants myself today and show off my smooth legs!

Ladies---I love reading info about tattoos! I think it is awesome to have a tattoo-no matter what age! You should go for it. After all we go through with our bodies with bc we should have some options. I like the pink ribbon idea. I have a friend that has a small butterfly on her ankle that is really very cute. I may go for something later on. Not sure about the pain part, though.
Charmaine--upcoming 50th birthday! Glad your hubby is getting you special gifts, etc.. Now you can get some awesome earrings to celebrate your bday! I am past the 50 (53 in June) but really felt that 50 was a milestone. Not in a negative way...just sort of weird. But it is different for everyone. Plus, I wasn't dx until I was 52 (this past October).
Have a great Saturday, ladies. It is finally beautiful weather here in NH so I am going to enjoy the 75-80 degrees. We had snow this week about 1/2 north of where I live. Very cold! UGH. Thank goodness it is going to be nice!

Sherri: The one that my husband got me is a Philips Lady Contour Shaver and it comes with an attachment for bikini shave. It was on sale for $59.XX
It is a nice shaver and I used it last night on my legs as hair has started to come in. I love the smooth shave that it gave. In the instructions it says that you can use Aloe Vera with it.
Oh nearly forgot to tell you got it from Zellers last night.

Redbarb804 - I like you had the every changing decision. I started out with DCIS and they thought it was only about 2.5 cm at most. When they did the lumpectomy they ended up taking out 4.5 cm and in the middle of it found almost a cm of invasive ductal carcinoma. I was shocked because they kept telling me that dcis was the good type of cancer to get, would need a lumpectomy and then be on my way. After the lumpectomy they told me my cancer type was high grade meaning a fast growing cancer. I also had a type of DCIS that was known to become invasive. They told me I had to decide between a lumpectomy and a single mastectomy. I was shocked, did a bunch of research, went to see a plastic surgeon and then decided to do a double mx so that I would not have to worry about it any more. When they did my dmx my bs also did a SNB. When she did this she took a tail of an area around the nodes and had the lab check out the fatty tissue around my sentinel nodes. To everyone's shock and amazement, they found two very small tumors in this fatty tissue, the sentinel nodes were clear and showed no cancer. When they reviewed my left breast which had the cancer they found that my DCIS was wide spread throughout my whole breast. Because they had found the two new micro tumors near the sentinel nodes they then went back in and did another surgery to remove the rest of my axillary nodes. To everyone's surprise again, they found cancer in three of my axillary lymph nodes. Like everyone else has said, the decision part is the hardest. It took me a long time to make my decision because I really didn't want to lose my breast. To help me make the decision I did what a friend recommended. She told me to make a decision and keep the decision for 3 days without changing your mind and then go to the next decision. You will see which one is best for you when you do this. I am happy with my decision and believe my surgeon saved my life by taking out and testing the fatty tissue around my sentinel nodes, if she had not done that, we would have never know that the cancer had spread to my axillary nodes or that I had two new tumors going until it was too late. I start chemo this coming Thursday and finally see an end to this part of the journey. Good luck on your decision and let me know if I can be of any help.0

My sister and I went to the mall when we were 12 and 14 and got our ears pierced. We had to come back with our permission slips (with totally fraudulent names and parent approvals of course). My sister went first and she didn't flinch, so I didn't expect it to hurt. It hurt bad, probably more so because I wasn't expecting it. The other day we were talking about that and she said, "Remember when we got our ears pieced? I pretended it didn't hurt so you wouldn't chicken out and then you got yours done and it DIDN'T hurt." Every time I have a procedure now I tell the doctor/technician/pathologist to be honest about how much it will hurt so if it does I won't be surprised.

I have considered a tattoo - quite fancied a flowering vine weaving its way along my extensive scars but now someone has said it is very painful to have scars tattooed that one is off the list! Also I have been so anti tattoo with my three girls that I feel I would look like a hypocrite if I got one now Have always wanted a third pair of ear piercings but my husband has always said I would look like a gypsy! Maybe now is the time to grab the sympathy vote and do it!
Jean - I was 52 when I was dx too and am 53 now.

Wow Laura what a story about how your surgeon found all your tumors! I am so glad that you decided to do a DBL MX and I know your family is. {{{Hugs}}} Best wishes to you in your chemo journey. I know you will do well, you sound like a strong woman with a lot of courage.
Rae I say if you want to get your ears pierced the 3rd time get them pierced. I have 3 on one and 2 on the other and I'm a professional, a Director of Nursing for a large corporation. It is what you do with it tactfully.

I just want to drop in and say 'good morning'' to all you ladies. I have been reading all the posts on the tatoos and ear piercing. Whatever it is...go for it. It's time to pamper yourself. You are all in my prayers.

Laura M. Thank you for the information. where did you go for your surgery? Who is your surgeon? After talking to my ono I have decided to do chemo, radiation, then do another re-excision to see that everything is gone. I just want to get started on the chemo before anything things spreads. I'm alittle concerned though that your sentinel node was negative, but that there was cancer in some of the auxillary nodes. Did they say why? I had 2 nodes taken out that were both negative. Good luck with your chemo. Check out the Stating Chemo in May 2010 thread. A lot of great ladies all starting in the next few weeks.

Charmaine--glad you got the nice earrings! Good for you. Now don't put them away and wait for a special occasion. Wear them whenever you want!
Rae--thanks for sharing that you were dx at 52 also. I do think that cancer strikes us at different times/ages, etc... I don't have little kids (sons are 21 and 18)! It is hard for them---but nothing like having little ones at home! OMG--I feel for all of those mothers. Anyway..I agree with Renee. Go for the 3rd piercing if you want. I am thinking of getting botox to get out some of my wrinkles after this is all over. Not really HUGELY vain about it....but would be nice to get some of the deep lines on my forehead, between my eyes, etc...taken care of. Haven't approached my DH about it. Will wait awhile.... So, tell your DH that it could be alot worse....LOL.
Laura--Good luck on starting chemo this Thursday. You have been through alot! I echo Renee that you are so fortunate that your surgeon did such a thorough job! That is so great.
Barb--You start your chemo on May 13th, correct? I know you are very anxious to get started with the chemo tx. Take care of yourself! You have been on such a roller coaster ride--emotionally getting jolted around so much. I am happy that you made your decision and can move forward. Just sad that you had to experience so much anxiety along the way.
Have a great Monday, ladies!

Goodvibesonly: Yes I am starting my chemo on May 13. I am starting to get very nervous especially since I got a tour of the treatment room. It's a very nice place, but just alittle scary. It wasn't real crowded when I went but someone was telling me that it is amazing at how many people have to get treatments. Makes you wonder what is up with our world that so many people are getting cancer.

Redbarb..Are you having your treatment in the DR's Office or your Hospital Infusion Room?
0 -
It is at the hospital but my ono rents the space. It's brand new, but not private suites like I've heard some places have. It has little open cubicles with individual tv's, wireless service, snacks, drinks, etc. I'm hoping I get some really nice nurses that i will be dealing with. My DH is going with me the first time and then after that I have several friends who have offered to take me. Did anyone drive themselves there and back or did you always have someone take you. My husband wants to go to all my infusions, but I told him since I have people who are willing to take me I'd rather have him home early in the evening to be with the boys and me. Especially if I'm not feeling up to doing anything.

Hi everyone. My name is Sandra and I live in Alvin Texas. I've just had my second surgery on Friday to remove my cancer. The doctor didn't get it all in the surgery back on April 1st. We're hoping this time for better test results. Everyone here sounds so upbeat. I've been having a problem staying strong. I've been extremely emotional lately.
