Zogo, Its not really a secret. Last December, I fell walking into a store for no reason and broke my hand. My balance has been bad for years, since I am carrying 70 extra pounds with me. So in January, I decided that it was time to live a healthier lifestyle for the rest of my life. I bought a treadmill and use it every day for interval cardio for 30 minutes. I do some yoga poses, except the ones that I need to put weight on my hand. Most importantly, I am using an app called My fitness pal on my ipad that I write everything that I eat and exercise. I am not depriving myself of all the foods that I love, but for lunch every day, I have a banana, ff greek yogurt and almonds. Then for dinner, I try to eat healthier. I know that for the rest of my life, this is what I have to do, although its not easy all the time. You can do it too!

Congratulations to everyone here....lose or not, we're all trying!

Down 1.4 pounds at Optifast weigh-in last night...

We also had a guest speaker- Sheri Pruitt, Ph.D., who co-wrote a book called "Living SMART - Five Essential Skills to Change Your Health Habits Forever".

    http://www.amazon.com/Living-SMART-Essential-Skills-Forever/dp/0979356407#_

(The Optifast program costs a gazillion dollars, so our books were included....)

She freely admits that there's nothing new in the book, but that it's formatted in a way that helps us be more successful.

    There are five "SMART" guidelines:

    1. Set a goal

    2. Monitor your progress

    3. Arrange your world for success

    4. Recruit a support team

    5. Treat yourself

She also talked about how hard it is to maintain your weight loss once you've reached your goal. She told us there was ONE THING that we had to be able to do to be successful, and if we couldn't do that ONE THING, we would not succeed.

What was it? We must be able to put ourselves (and our health) at the top of our priorities list! Once we lose the ability to do that, everything else just sort of takes over.

She also said that rewards were good, but they needed to be instantaneous. Buying a new outfit, getting a mani, etc, are all good, but good behavior needs to be rewarded immediately - like training your dog. She suggested patting yourself on the back - literally - when you pass up some junk food, or do some exercise, or make a good food choice. Personally, I prefer a rousing round of applause for myself. Wink

well I am finally below the 130# mark!  Not by much mind you but there. I do, however, feel "fatter" and by that I mean that my muscle to fat ratio is low.  I am concerned thta I won't lose the last 5# (which put me at the top of what is idea for me) before I go on Tamoxifen. Any of you on Tamoxifen? Is it possible to maintain your weight on it or even lose? thanks, Q

    WooHOOO, Quaatsi!

    Congratulations on the loss!!!!!

I would LOVE to be below 130#, and in fact, might aim for that.

I will go on Arimidex in the fall, and I know it causes weight gain.

The speaker in our class (see above) said that to maintain a weight loss, most people had to exercise at least 60 - 90 minutes a day.

Granted, this does not mean an hour and a half in aerobics, but rather some sort of exercise that gets your heart rate up. And it can be split up during the day.

I hate to think of a drug undoing all my hard work.....

Round of applause to Blessings and Quaatsi!

It's very hard but possible to lose while on hormonal therapy. I exercise about an hour a day most days and on top of that bike and walk to do errands and hike on weekends. And watch the calories! It's exhausting! I lost about 1 kilo a year. My goal is 3 more kilos off.

    Up 300 grams.

Right now don't give a "shit" about my weight.........going to the Onc. today, and telling her I'm off Femara.............I can't handle the pain anymore.........................it is depressing, and honestly I have reached the point where I don't care about my weight...........was doing great with my hypnosis cd, but this pain has got me "not caring" about anything..................

I did well on Femara for about 9 months.......all of a sudden things went "south".................I'm not sure if the LE moved down to my legs, and feet..............if that is the case, then its not the Femara, but the fluid buildup in the lower extremities........had it in my right arm, and not sure if it can go lower..............I'll see what the Onc says today..........and Lord help her if she tries to "humor" me........................

163, down 1 lb.  I've been yoyo-ing around 163 for a solid month, need to break through to the 150's.  Nothing like shorts and bathing suits for a little incentive!

    Ducky, Hugs!!

     up 1.4 to 174.2 lb

I love this thread and the exercise thread because we are so "proactive" here and trying to do things that keep us alive and well.  Kudos to everyone.

I have been doing chemo until just recently-- I don't think of Herceptin as chemo but maybe it is as it does set me back for about 4-5 days.  I feel some strength coming back in my body so now I just have to get myself back into using some of my time to exercise.  I think I would feel better with less emphasis on the weight right now and more on physical fitness.

I start Tamoxifen in 2 weeks and I know I am nervous about it-- exercise helps that too!!

Today is my only child's 17th birthday-- making a cake soon here -- probably not the best thing for me to be doing but...

    Happy Wednesday gals,

Ducky - talk to your onc about taking a "vacation" from Femara.  After being on it for about a year, I was at the same point you're at and ready to go off of it completely because I couldn't take the s/e any longer.  I talked to my onc, and we negotiated a one-month vacation from Femara.  Within a week most of the symptoms had resolved, and by the end of the month I felt like my old self again.  The good thing is that once I got back on Femara, it took several weeks for the s/e to start back up, so the benefits of the vacation persisted long beyond the break.  Since then I've negotiated two more one month vacations, and I had the same benefit.  I've been on Femara for almost 4 years now, and the vacations are the only things that kept me on it this long.  It's a calculated risk of course, but I figured taking the occasional "vacation" is better than going off of it entirely and completely losing that protection.

No change this week in weight.  While I'd like to lose, no change is better than a gain.  On to better things next week!

Ducky - Does your onc center offer lymph massage?  I had one yesterday and I noticed that my side felt less full.  Also she put on some kind of tape and that is supposed to help.  Maybe your onc could give you a referral to a lymphatic therapist.

Up .5 to 136. Not bad considering how I was not careful at all on the holiday weekend.

I'm down 0.5 lbs. I was yoyoing this past week so I'm glad to be down today. Today I have to fast because I'm have my first colonoscopy in the morning (fun, fun) so I know this will cause ups and downs for the next few days.

I hope, ducky, that you can take a break like NatsFan suggested. I don't blame you for wanting to quit. If I was in my 70's or older, I would seriously consider it, but taking a break and then trying again would probably be what I would do.

Trying to get rid of that last ten pounds. Was a bit heavy for me when I started this process. Then with drugs, surgery, and decreased activity I gained some more. Now as part of getting back to normal the rest must go.

Using a program for I phone called lose it. Basically a calorie and exercise tracker. Will see if it helps.

Will let you know next week if it's working.

I've been using loseit.com for a month. I set it for 1/2 lb a week and so far I've lost almost 6 pounds (so I'm 4 pounds ahead). It really has helped me keep track of my calories and realize how  much I used to eat! I think now before I put something in my mouth and it's also motivated me to exercise more. I still want to lose another 37 pounds so I have a long way to go...

Got some news tonight at Optifast weigh-in - my goal weight may be too low!!! Surprised

I'm 5'5", and was hoping to get down to 135 - 130 in preparation for exchange surgery....AND the extra poundage I know the Arimidex will put on when I start it in the fall.

I'm down 1.2 pounds tonight, (down to 166) for a total of 23 pounds lost on program, and a grand total of 38 pounds from my highest weight of 204.

I was telling the nurse that even though this is a "Very Low Calorie Diet", I am losing about as much as they would expect you to on Weight Watchers, so I think that's pretty healthy. (I could never lose weight on WW, though...)

I said I wanted to get down to 130-135 in preparation for the expected weight gain, and she said that would put my BMI at either 21.6 or 22.5, both of which Kaiser says is too low for someone my age and height. They want my BMI between 24 and 26.

So for now, my goal weight has been upped by ten pounds, but she says we'll reevaluate when I get there.

She said they didn't want me to get too skinny. TOO SKINNY!!!!! Never in my life have those words applied to me!!!! Laughing

Up 1.1 - I was bracing to be up 2, so it's not as bad as it could be.  I've gotten away in the last few weeks from using loseit.com, so I pretty much expected that I'd have to pay the piper at some point.  Frown  OK, I've started back on loseit.com and am tracking EVERYTHING again.  It's a constant battle, isn't it?

    13 more months left on letrozole and counting . . . .

163.5 - Up 1.5 - not surprised, big italian restaurant dinner and birthday cake.  Plus, my kitty is not doing well, took him to vet hospital sunday night, so emotionally I'm a mess - he's back home, but not eating.  But I sure am!  Haven't exercised since Saturday either.  This weekend is a rehearsal dinner and wedding, so my effort this week will be to not gain any more!

Down .2.... did not weigh in last week as I know it would have been bad.  Am glad that the scale went down since 2 weeks ago!  Am back to tracking on loseit.com (day 3 today) and feel much more in control again!

Despite my efforts at being a total couch potato last week, I was still down 1.4 pounds tonight.

I'm always SO motivated after Wednesday weigh-ins ...

I keep thinking I'll go work out every day the following week.....but do I? NOOOOOO!!!!! Undecided

Down another 2.2. This is good. I wonder how much I was eating when I was having so much trouble losing weight. Just keeping track makes a huge difference.
