Hi sisters :-)
6am Monday morning here in the hospital after my BMX with free TRAM on Friday. Will be here until Friday at least I think...
Past few days were really challenging with meds and nausea :-/ Seem to be on top of it now though.
Catheter came out yesterday and hoping at least 2 drains will come out today.
Surgery was 12+ hours I gather but all went well.
I had a positive breast node last December and I had refused the ALND. Done chemo, herceptin, a few rads and Tamoxifen since then and BS saifd there was a small group of breast nodes he removed with the forst one looking a bit "solid". Pathology will hopefully show dead cancer cells - if it shows live cancer cells we will know that the txs so far have not completely worked. Should know pathology on Thursday.
Not panicked yet... Breasts look good :-)

Hi Jenn so happy to hear from you so soon. Hope the path report shows dead cells. Great that you are able to have an extensive look at all the breast tissue now that it is out, can't beat that!
Marathon effort 12+ surgery but how good to have that all behind you now. Thinking of you and send best wishes for speedy recovery.

Hi Jenn, nice to see you posting and sounding a little more lucid. What a marathon for you but hopefully it's all for the good and getting better each day. Keeping my fingers crossed for good news on the path.
Having a real yurt day just sitting watching the tele and knitting.......do I ever do anything else?.........I don't think so.........lol
Have a good one all!
Love n hugs. Chrissy0 -
Sitting in a recliner. 3 drains out this morning. Every trip to bathroom is like a marathon and I need a snooze after. When I watched Tony unpack my bag I needed a snooze after :-)
Jenn0 -
Jenn rest when the need takes you as you have been through a massive amount of trauma to your body and it needs all the rest you can give it to heal. Good to hear that some of the drains are now out.........that's got to make you just a little bit more comfortable
By the way, I hear you on the marathon trips to the bathroom......lol
Love n hugs. Chrissy0 -
Jenn Im so happy to hear that you are feeling better. Also glad to hear the breasts are doing well. Happy dance for 3 drains coming out, I hated those horrible things lol.
Sure hope the time in hospital passes quickly and you can get home and recuperate in your own lovely home - fingers crossed for no lymph involvement.

As per usual I am constantly underwhelmed by nursing staff... 3 new nurses with no idea how to use anything including how to get me out of the chair - now have very sore abs which I shouldn't have.
Just had to ask one to check my drains since I noticed my stomach has just gotten puffier all day and realised noone had emptied them. She said "what do you mean" to me... :-/
Hope I survive this shift....

You have had the worst luck possible with nursing staff throughout your BC ordeal Jenn. One would think, knowing they are nursing someone like you with practical experience in the medical field, that they would make some sort of effort to get it right hey.
I think at the very least u should have a word to the ward sister and just state that you now have sore abs on top of everything else and could she please make an effort to have more qualified nurses assist you until you are more capable of getting around on your own. Send the current ones back to bedpan duty.
I hate incompetence in nurses. If they dont know their jobs, they shouldnt be let loose on the unsuspecting public. They especially shouldnt be let loose on someone a couple of days out from 12 hour surgery.

Oh Jenn, great to hear from you in 'person' (well, as person as the internet is !!). Hopefully the worst is over for you.
There doesn't seem to be any inbetween with nursing care - it is either top notch or hopeless. I've actually taken to writing on my body when I go in for things (like NO NEEDLES IN THIS ARM on my left arm or NOT THIS BREAST etc) just incase as there are always stories that make you worried.Today was a BEAUTIFUL day and hopefully a sign of things to come !!
Hope everyone has had a wonderful long weekend and are ready for a short working week

Gosh Jenn, hope they have somebody who knows what they are doing to look after you. lifting and handling a patient is one of the first things you learn in practical nursing. Good luck it seems like, what are they doing with a patient like you if they can;t even lift you outta a chair with out damaging you, you don't need any more pain. have a good night and sleep tight.
What was the holiday today, what were you celebrating? is it national australia day or only some parts of aussy having today off

In South Australia it was Adelaide Cup long weekend don't know about the others.
Grrrr I just hate it when I hit the wrong button!
Love n hugs all! Chrissy0 -
NSW Labour Day today...
My best friend who is an intensive care nurse just left. Made sure I am very comfortable before she went :-)
Jenn0 -
Good for you! Glad you got friends in all the right places coz being comfy is very important right now. Hope you get some good sleep tonight so you can feel just a little better tomorrow.
Love n hugs. Chrissy0 -
Hi Jenn, inexperienced nursing staff - minus any commonsense grrrr!! I read on one of the boards where gals were taking their own anti-bacterial wipes into the hospital. As they were about to be admitted back to their room after surgery, hubby wiped down all surfaces, including door knobs, bed and all equipment.
You really need to watch the nurses, they use gloves but touch everything first and then attack the drains etc. Last thing you need after gruelling surgery is to be botched up by unsterile nurses and have infection set in.
I like Kelpie's idea of writing on the body, no one could argue with that, certainly no margin for error!

Hi all
Haven't been able to post as I'm having trouble with my computer, some sites come up and some don't. Have tried everything, hopefully will work better now. Of all the sites I go to this one I missed the most. Here in WA public holiday was for Queen's Birthday, we also have the Royal Show and school holidays at the moment. I worked today, the first time all stores were allowed to open on public holiday in Perth, I get time and half plus another day off so I didn't mind, I was suprised that so many people knew the shops were open.
Jenn I hope that each day you feel better. I have my appointment next Monday with Plastic Surgeon about reconstruction. I'm going to get an implant, as I'm going through Public Hospital I've got no idea when I will have surgery.
It got to 34 degrees here today, like summer, it's supposed to rain Wednesday though, I don't mind as we need the rain.

Jenn it's so good to hear from you on here. Sorry about the nursing staff there though. I was lucky when I had my mx - all the nurses (with the exception of one grumpy one) were a dream.
It's a gorgeous day here today - yesterday was a lovely day, but just a bit too windy.
I'm having a short week this week - next Monday is a public hol in Canberra so I'm taking Friday off to have a four day long weekend lol. I think I'm going to need the rest as we have a photography deal coming up on Living Social, which means once it hits the site we'll be pretty busy for quite a few weekends I think. But that's great, it will bring a lot of business in :-)
Have a great day everyone
Trish

Morning girls, Trish you lucky thing. and i hope your weekend goes well for you and the photography you will be doing.
Jenn, hope you had a lovely sleep and feeling refreshed, Are you allowed to shower yet or only sponge baths. a shower makes you feel better so much so would. you would have to have assistence with that too? God help you hope it somebody that won't hurt you while doing the job. just wondering as to how they will keep it dry. sponge baths are ok, but a shower, you cant beat it, esp after surgery. have a good day and i hope you feeling much better re pain.
hope everybody else is good and having a good day, of cause i am about 3 hours ahead. i always fiorget that, you are just starting your day and i am almost thru the morning.

Cyberknife is using rads very targetted around a tumour - almost like a surgery...
Dressing off around abdo this morning. WOW that incision is looooong! Dr has warned I may be here over the weekend if can't down to one drain by Friday. Pretty comfy now so OK with that.
All looking good - now wondering about the pathology that may be back tomorrow.
Hope all OK. Jenn0 -

Hello all
Jenn - good to hear from you, have been sending you healing thought :-) - hope you've been getting them lol. Waiting for drains to come out - remember that part. I went home with one drain still in (that's fairly normal for a mx) and had it for 2 1/2 weeks instead of the 10 days they thought it would take. I was so relieved to get rid of that thing. Not that it hurt or anything, was just a nuisance. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your path report tomorrow too.Midnight - Jenn explained it pretty well - I think it's used a lot for ladies with brain mets, where they have to be pretty precise and surgery on the area isn't as "easy".
Beautiful day here today - lots of sunshine.Trish
