Hi everyone! I haven't been on this thread before, but am loving the beautiful creations! I recently started sewing again, after a mere, haha, 20 year hiatus. Only real problem was learning to use the "new" computerized machines. Got a baby lok Sophia2 which is awesome. Anyway, here is my first creation, an apron for youngest DD. Her birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks so I will need to mail it out soon. Hard to see in the picture, but I embroidered her name on the pocket. Next project is another apron, different pattern, for oldest DD.

Yorkie, I'm wanting to try getting back to clothes also. I hadn't sewn in many years before I started quilting last year, but I really want to find a couple of simple skirt & top patterns & make some Spring clothes. I think I'll stay away from anything very exacting because it is too hard to pin & fit things when you live alone.

Melissa, I'm trying to keep it simple too, at least until I have gotten more experience. Taking up sewing after so many years is not like getting back on the bicycle, lol. I do remember a lot of the basics, but things are very different now, especially the embroidery piece.

Thank you chrissy! I hope she does love it. The style and colors really remind me of her. She's a very girly girl.

Lay-love your quilt. That's a good way to use up leftovers. The apron is very cute! Here's one called a zentangle quilt. I copied from Pinterest. Worked on this before the bmx and finished it after. There's 32 different b/w prints used if I remember right. Luckily I had a kit of fat quarters with most of the prints.

Gorgeous creations. Aly, can't wait to see the quilt with more light. I can tell it will be gorgeous.

Smaarty, Do you quilt by hand or machine?

Melissa, I want to make some clothes too. I saw some skirts at the store called 'yoga skirts'. They were fuller than A line, knit fabric, and elastic waistband.  Cute and easy to make. I may buy one to make a pattern and return the skirt. I'm hoping to make some things that fit. Right now I'm between a 10 and a 12. Tens are tight and twelves are baggy.

It makes me happy and hopeful to see all this beautiful work. Smarty, I too love the cat snuggled into the black and white print.

Yorkie Mom The apron will be treasured by your daughter.  I especially love everything that my Grandma made. I even have some tatting that she was working on in my things. Nothing else can ever replace the things made by hand. Wow, I made myself all teary.

Alyson. The quit that is now together is wonderful I can't wait to see it in brighter light. Is there a story behind the various prints used in the quilt. Sorry I if I already missed an explanation.

Smaarty you certainly are that, those quilts are sooo beautiful.

Ginger it is called a postcard quilt and each piece is a New Zealand print, some are flowers and birds, others scenes, while some are bright kiwiana subjects.

    imageimageimageimage

I think I have about 70 different pieces. Some are fussy cut to get particular flowers and birds.

    image Like on this.

It is for my nephew and his fiancee who are getting married in Prague May. They are both biologists though he is not working in that field now. She is studying temperature change on lizards!!!! They both love the bush and beaches of NZ.

Allyson your quilt plan is genius.  Beautiful NewZealand prints. It must have taken a while to assemble this collection. WHat a work of love you have there.  I am sure it will be cherished. I look forward to seeing it maybe in some close ups and better light if you have time.

Yorkie mom I also have old family quilts. My family was from western kentucky and some of the quilts contain flour sack material. They arent special patterns for the most part but are special to me.

    Hugs Ginger

Gingerbrew, they are heirlooms! You are so fortunate to have them. My mom sewed for us when we were kids, but I don't have any of those clothes anymore. She and my dad are both gone and I have many of their personal items (which I treasure), but nothing hand made. I want to leave my kids and grands things I created just for them.

Alyson   That quilt will be a treasure forever.  I love your thoughtful theme and the effort to gather the fabric alone is priceless.  Are you taking the quilt to Prague?  I love making quilts with someone special in mind.  My mom made baby quilts for each of her children, and I have done that for my grandchildren.  All treasures.

A friend once told me of a science assignment she had in college.  She had to hand-catch lizards and take their temperature using a regular rectal thermometer!  Sounds similar to your nephew's bride-to-be.  Me?  I avoid them at all costs.  I wonder what the temperature change or rectal temperature will do to better the world?

    Keep stitchin'    Jan

jan- you can find the quilt on pininterest, just search zentangle.

Aly-what size rectangle did you start with? I'm suppose to make napkins for my GD wedding, then turn them into a quilt for them.

How do you stick a termometer up a lizards butt??  Very carefully! Oh, maybe they're big lizards?

Smaarty - I think I'm in trouble.  Love, love love that zentangle stuff!  It is much more my style than the quilts I've been making since DX.  Thanks (I think) for steering me in that direction.  Oh boy.         Jan

Ok, Smaarty now you've done it! I may HAVE to get into quilting, after I've finished my current apron for oldest DD, eight, count them, Christmas stockings, a reversible vest for DH and another apron for me, per DH's request. But those quilts are just amazing!

thanks guys. The convergence quilts are real easy and the main part only takes 4 fat quarters. I'm teaching a class in late May at my sewing guild. I got addicted to making them, made about 20 or so. Now on to something like the poppies.

I was good this morning, got 1 bridesmaid dress cut out. Will have it done by Thursday. It was a pain, it has a full circle skirt, at least it's not full length.  3 more to go.

Smaarty did you say you volunteered to make 4 dresses?  I was asked to make my sister in laws wedding dress. I actually said no. She had one made by a dressmaker who did not use proper construction techniques or any boning or interfacing and interlining to make the dress a wedding gown. IMy SIL is large and the dress was not at all flattering. An A line with a hem that hit at the widest part of her calves. Nothing on the dress to elongate any lines and make it more flattering. Why oh why didn't she go to a bridal store for a proper dress. She could have gotten a proper gown. I am still glad I didn't volunteer. But I hated how she looked on her special day. Wow listen to me complain. Miss cranky signing off. :)

I have always said I would never do wedding dresses.  Ive made about 7 sets of bridesmaid dresses. This will definitely be the last time.

Gingerbrew, I think one of the most unfortunate wedding dress trends is even big girls insisting on strapless dresses. VERY rarely are they at all flattering.
