Gardengumby, I haven't been doing this very long, so probably wouldn't be a great teacher.

I am suffering from the "not perfect enoughs" on the quilting & need to knock it off. I think I've been looking at too much Judi Madsen. Of course I can't do what she does on a long arm on a domestic machine, but oh, she does such beautiful quilting...

Melissa, I seem to remember you making your very first quilt about a year ago? With your color combos, I don't think the quilting is going to be the main attraction. Wouldn't be for me.

Melissa - I was blown away when I went on the green fairy site!  I'm just stunned.  Every time I start to feel I've created something special, I get knocked down by something like this.  Thanks for sharing the info.  Jan

Jan, isn't it just amazing? I have her book. Lots of her quilts are very simple, but lots of open space with incredibly detailed quilting.

I thought the most interesting part of classes was seeing how very different the same quilt looked based on peoples fabric & color choices. I kind of like brights if you didn't notice...:)

GREAT link, Mel, but Jan, don`t despair, get inspired! If we ever master a craft, where is there to go? I like how you have to adjust your eyes on her quilting to think of it puffy instead of indented...anyone else?

Looks like there has been some busy ladies here this summer.  Our schedules have changed and we have been using the long days to get things done outside so there isn't much time to post here.  I read some of the threads and by the time I get to where I can post, it's time to move on. But today I woke up at 4:45 am thinking the alarm was about to go off then realized that I still had 45 minutes so I came into the family room and started reading.

I suppose that I couldn't sleep because I am excited that I will be making another baby quilt soon.  We found out yesterday after work that DS2's wife will be having a baby girl in February.  We have known the date for months but she had an ultra sound yesterday.  DH and I were in the room with them and we all squealed when the words "It's a....Girl" popped up on the screen.  I will be baking a reveal cake for a big family dinner this weekend.

Once it is revealed we (DIL and I) can actively work on the colors and theme of the baby's quilt.

Congratulations Meece. PInk and blue too. Don't think I will ever have either. Sigh.

Eph, Patch and Lala belong to DS#1, Sam & Lucy belong to SD, Matt has two stepsons and a step daughter and now this little girl.

I was never fortunate enough to be able to sew for my daughter, but did a little sewing for the three boys.  I sew for Lala, but it is difficult with them so far away and DIL is not a seamstress so asking for accurate measurements is not easy.  Lucy's mother prefers Carter's clothing although I have made her headbands.

You can quilt for boys, but just ask Matt....it takes a lot longer to quilt something made for a 6'5" man!

I have been informed that the theme for the nursery will be giraffes.  Does anyone know of a quilting fabric in brown/tan giraffe skin print?  I have found the embroidery patterns I want to use on the quilt but would like to incorporate the giraffe print.  At this point they are looking at brown and pink.

Meece I just love giraffes and I can't wait to see what you come up with! Sorry, can't help on the fabric.

Meece, go to fabric.Com or bugfabric.com. Put in giraffe and see what comes up. Be sure to read the type of fabric it is. I bought once and got upholstery fabric because I wasn't paying attention.

It might be in the baby section rather than the quilting.

I collected giraffes for years.  I gave away my collection several years ago.  Darn, I would have much rather sent them to use for the baby!

Thanks for the ideas.  I tried fabrics.com but will check out the other.  I already looked at fabric types because the ones I really liked were also leatherette.

The "kids" bought a stuffed giraffe at the ultrasound place and it has a little recording box which plays the baby's actual heartbeat in its tummy.

WOW!! What will they think of next? I would think they would use the "Mommy's" heartbeat as that is what the baby heard for 10 months (40 weeks)....

There's a giraffe teething toy that's pretty popular with parents. I think it's because it's easy to hold.

Meece, you'll find lots of giraffe-themed prints here:

I had a little heart for my boys that was a mother's heartbeat and it bumped with each beat. It fit in a pocket of a crib hammock called a Crib Cuddle.  The slings were recalled but it wouldn't surprise me that the heart is in a box in the attic.

Stratford - I don't even sew but of course I had to look at the giraffe material. By golly Meece there ought to be something in there to suit your fancy.

I have certainly bookmarked Spoonflower if by some chance I'm snowed in with a sewing machine for years with of course someone to teach me how to use it.

In the meantime I still have the crochet snowflakes that I've still done nothing with. Keep me out of craft stores please.

Oh they have Raggedy Ann fabric. Oh No, no, bad girl.

I have looked at spoonflower and hoped to have some custom fabrics made, but they can be pricey.

Wow - I was 69 posts behind! Cute sweaters, beautiful quilts..... lots to look at!

As for quilting the big fancy quilts, most of the ladies in my class were really professional-level quilters, and they turned out incredible works. But only a few of them had the big quilting machines with the computer-generated patterns, so most of them sent theirs out to be quilted. Even quilts that won prizes at shows were usually quilted by two or three local gals who were SO creative.... like quilting spiderwebs on a Halloween wall hanging.... or flowers along the border to match the fabric in the middle.... or dog bones on a child's quilt with puppies.

I still haven't quilted anything since I quit my class, except for a pink and green crib quilt that I made at the very last minute for a baby shower gift. I used fabric and supplies I already had on hand, and enveloped it, eliminating the binding and substituting giant rick-rack. It was a strip quilt, so I just did a quick in-the-ditch quilt on it. The backing is the softest fleece I ever felt. I can't remember if I posted a pic, so I will. (If I already posted this, I'm sorry. I'm dealing with a head injury and my memory is somewhere out there with my balance, wandering around.)
