Mike I am so sorry to hear of Becky's passing. She was a beloved member of our stitchers on BCO. It is so very kind of you to write us a personal note. You are in the hearts and prayers of many BCO sisters tonight.

I started a topic,  "Beccad is an angel" on the stage Four forum so that oothers can post in remembrance of Becky if they wish.

Mike, I am very sorry to hear of Becky's passing.  We will miss her here.  You and your family will be in my prayers.  Becky was a lucky woman to have a husband so caring and thoughtful. She will be missed.

Mike, how gracious of you to take the time to let us know of Becky's passing. She will be sorely missed here, but is not alone where she has gone. I had a priest give me a lovely card on the death of my best friend, it said "Her Journey's Just Begun". That thought gave me peace through my grief. I pray for you and your family as you grieve your loved one.

Mike, I am so very sorry to learn of your loss. It's always hard to find the right words to try to consol a person in their grief, but I pray that in time, you are comforted by Becky's memories.  That she had such a kind, caring and loving husband; well, I know that was a comfort and blessing to her.

Meece I think it is so nice that you added a little handmade Angel in honor of Becky to our masthead for this topic.

Barbe your new photo is beautiful. Someday I may actually put up one myself.

It is a beautiful day here in the Pacific Northwest, sunny and mild, perfect!

    Love you all Ginger

I find it hard to post as normal right now, in respect to Baccad.  But, in respect to Beccad, I will try to bring us back around to our common thread...crafting.  I am sure she would want us to do that. (Please feel free to continue offering your condolences to Mike and their family.)

My sewing room is empty right now.  We are painting the walls and ran out of paint.  I will get more, we'll finish tonight, and I can move back in this weekend.  I am going to LA with FDIL to pick up  her wedding gown tomorrow.  We will head to a huge fabric store to find fabric for a little bolero jacket to match the dress.

I have fixed up one of my Necchi machines and my parents purchased a sewing cabinet for it.  We will be giving it to FDIL as a belated graduation present for her hard work at the university.  I am teaching her to sew on this machine and she has no idea it will be hers.

Last night I went to mom's to help her learn to use her new toy, a little brother embroidery machine.  It was fun to work on, and I got her through the one color operation, so she can have fun practicing.  We will move on to the multiple color work on her next lesson.  We joked about her embroidering anything she could get her hands on.  Dad's underwear may now bear "front" and "back" labels.

Since she got the new machine she no longer has a place for her serger, so she sent it home with me.  It'll will be interesting learning how to use it.  I haven't had anything to serge with in years!

I had embroidery machines in my store to play with all day long and after a while, I got bored. Now, of course, I think of TONS of things I could do with one!!!! As for sergers, I had them in my store and never touched them. I had professional lessons on them (as a dealer, of course) and remember that was the day I didn't have my glasses!! The instructor would walk behind us and cut our threads at any time. Threading never bothered me, and they have air-threaders now that do that for you. I just never saw the use for a serger, but one of my friends SWEARS by it! As I don't do clothing, I'll probably never get into one.

Sergers are amazing for children's clothing and I used tham a lot in costuming. Cut, overcast, seam all at once. One time I needed to make 40 pairs of pirate pants for an event. The serger was just the best. Some people use them for processes traditionally done on sewing machines. I never got into that, it seemed to bulky to me.

I confess I still do not have my sewing room straighted out. I am thinking I need some sort of rehab program to get it done. I am denying myself something that I love and a place I thoroughly enjoy being in. Makes no sense to me.

    Hugs Ginger

I had a sewing machine that had a little serging attachment.  Using only 2 thread it wasn't as nice as a serger, but it did a decent job.

I haven't had the time to put the final coat of paint in the sewing room, so my world is totally in disaray.  Life can get so busy!  I leave for LA in a few hours, then home this evening and back tomorrow.  Having a nice day at the Arboretum tomorrow and dinner at redondo beach for our anniversary.

Ginger, I went 18+ months denying myself the pleasure of my sewing room, so I know how you feel!! What I finally did was get a hand project going that uses things from my sewing room, so I'm hunting away in there, and allowing me to feel like I've gotten back on my creative track.

Almost time for an update shot!! I added a sort of spider to the web, but I only gave it 6 legs, so it's just a spi.

    Barbe...loving your spi....good giggle

    Meece, your trip sounds great.

I've spent the last couple of afternoons arranging my new little 6 drawer unit from Ikea. It's only 24" tall and 26" wide. 3 drawers hold all the embroidery machine paraphernalia nicely and 2 have been designated button drawers. I scored some great little divider units from Target and I'm having the best time laying out my button collection. Sometimes I walk in there just to open one of the drawers. I'm sort of sad to be almost done with the project......isn't that silly!

Ginger I was the same way.  Before the BC hit, I didn't let anything stop me from sewing.  Once it came into the picture I stopped doing any sewing.  At first it was the BMX, followed by chemo, then the exchange.  I spent 2011 trying to put the pieces of me back together.  I became depressed and just couldn't shake it for the longest time.  I understand what your going thru.  I'm finally crawling outa that dark tunnel and have gotten back on track.  You'll get there girl!!  Hang in there!

I've almost got my moms quilt finished.  I used civil war themed fabric, so I've gotta make a run to the fabric store because I don't have enough for a backing on it.  She's really going to love it!

    Happy crafting all!

mostlysew, I think I bought the same Ikea units as you!! I got them in black, got two. A couple shallower drawers on top and then a couple slightly deeper ones. Five in total..I think...six????  I like that they give me another top surface to put crap on. Never thought of drawer dividers, I just pile the stuff in, but dividers, now there's a thougth!! And I too, will just go in to open a drawer and look at all my beads and buttons!!!! hehehhehehehe

I may have already posted this, but I couldn't find it.

This is the sewing table I got (In white) that I will be painting black.

I think it's perfect for a beginning sewer.

Oh, the trip to pick up the wedding gown was a disaster.  The shop only had a size 14 for her.  They said it was the smallest the manufacturer had!  They have one week to make this good, or I think FDIL is going to go chihuahua on the owner.  She's a size 6 and didn't lay down and accept that this was her dress.  We'll see what happens but the owner knew she was irate and sad, and it really bothered him to see her in tears.

Did they say they had a size 6 before you came down???? That is horrendous!!!!

Why are you painting the cabinet?

    Barbe,

It could well bethe same unit. The dividers I got are fabulous, if I do say so myself, LOL. I got them at Target and they're a molded plastic that's softly rounded on the edges so feel good. They've got 3 sections and are 11 3/4 x 4 1/2 x 1 5/8. I can get 7 of these in each drawer. I'm sure glad to hear you go just to view your stash too.....makes me feel more normal!

Meece....your poor FDIL. Hopefully the shop will figure out how to take that dress in. That sewing cabinet is quite cute, I'm sure she'll love it.

We are all quite similar. Every time I think I am totally messed up and I finally confess, here are others doing/feeling the same. Comforting actually and makes me feel hopeful.

The wedding shop really messed up. A 14 in wedding gown sizes is smaller than in regular misses sizes, so it shouldn't require as much altering. Unless they have changed the sizing I recall a bride who was a 16 needing a 20 in a wedding gown. My DD gown needed extensive down sizing because she had run a marathon and then lost a ton of weight afterward. All her working out prior to the marathon didn't cause her to lose weight then, she actually bulked up. By the time of her wedding she looked like she was going to blow away.

Is there a  family gown she would be able to wear? I can only imagine how distressed she must have been. What a big disappointment at a time most people are already on edge. Sending her hugs.

I am going to buy some fabric that I don't need, but want. How bad am I ? Innocent Red and white check silk dupioni for gift bags for Christmas. Laughing

No they didn't let us know anything about the dress not being the size she ordered.  When she talked to them on the phone they told her to come down to be fitted for alterations.  Since the dress fit her like a glove when she tried the sample on, we planned on just picking the dress up and taking it home.

FDIL hates oak finish, and not so partial to white.  I am painting it black so it will match her decor.

FDIL is normally a size 2-4 depending on what she's wearing.  So a 6 was a huge shock to her when she had to order it.

They should have explained it how gingerbrew just did above!! I remember having to get an 18 and being totally shocked as I was a 14 at the time. I have VERY broad shoulders, when I was an auxilliary police officer, they had to custom make my jacket!!

I don't like oak either and my sewing room new stuff is black too, so that's why I asked. Great choice!!
