Off to Moffit for f/u brain check.

Last thought on kerosene heaters---haven't a clue . Except I think they can give off carbon monoxide. Read directions carefully. Have fire extinguisher handy. ventilate properly?? CO detector.

Again practice house/apt evacuation routes. Establish where people will meet outside. Assume no light, count your steps. Can make rope tie to follow to door and along wall. Keep boots and outdoor close near your nest in case you need to evacuate and bag of meds and important papers.

Duckky hope the shore house makes it. Joan safe

L&H&P's for all,may we all have a nice big bonfire for this thing when it's all over. Namaste sassy

Granny wanted me to let everyone - especially Veggy - that she is off the computer for a while.  She is headed to her niece's house for an all night poker game.  She is in the path of the storm and I'm sure she will stay safe.  If she does not lose power, she will be back on the computer and will update everyone.

Jo, Sas, Wren, and others, thanks for the good wishes and great advice.
I did a last minute run to our shopping area and I picked up (of all things) some yarn and knitting needles just in case I get housebound.  College is closed already through Tuesday PM.  I will not miss work.
Tonight I will bake cakes for a Friday birthday, and enjoy a long hot shower!  We take such things for granted....
The wind is steady now, but not terrible.  Good news so far is no rain yet to saturate the ground before the storm.
I hope I can watch baseball tonight....all tv is storm coverage now.
They said that even Lake Michigan may get waves from this storm when it moves inland.
    Glad Granny won't be alone.
    Will check in later.
    Joan
PS - Sas, We just turned on a new kerosene heater for a trial run...I don't like them but it is for emergency....I have high open ceilings so the gases should dissipate.  I hope I won't need to turn it on, but I heard the temps are dropping as the front passes.  Maybe I won't lose power Smile

Joan, Yarn is a great idea! DH and I took a cruise once and I really wished for some sort of handwork to do. I love to read but not ALL day. Plus I read fast and run out quickly. There were lots of activities and scenery, but knitting or needlepoint would have made the trip better. As long as I am just knitting (no purl or pattern) I can do it in the dark.

Just make sure to ventilate very well if you use kerosene heaters.

Does anyone know what the situation is in Baltimore?

I know Granny was in the center of the storm.  I have not been able to get in touch with her and I am so worried.  If anyone does get in touch with her would you please post something.  She assured me she wuold be alright.  Her building has a generator.

I just called Grannydukes granddaugther. She's fine. She's staying with her friend and they have been playng cards in the dark. I called her cell phone too and told her not to be taking walks because of the sharks they showd on the news swimming up and down the roads. She didn't believe her granddaughter about it.

Can see the debriefing meetings talking about adding shark warnings and retrieval to their plans. What does this mean to the Hudson river? Did the sharks just go to New Jersy or did they go to New York too? So how do they get home? Can you imagine waking up, having coffee and seeing a shark swim by your front door--"Honey there's a shark in the front yard"---"George I told you not to mix that hard stuff with your coffee!"

VR glad you are safe and have electricity.  That walk around the house after a storm is pretty humbling. Enjoy the marshmallows and dryness.

They've come in with the damage numbers for Florida---25 million.  Basically, beach erosion.  Whew that is small compared to up north.

Anyone here from Ducky or Joan?

Oh Jo yum - I brought the platter of smores forward bcz we need a treat and hot cocoa and coffee.  The freaking storm is even threatning the Midwest here by Lake Michigan?  Honestly, cannot imagine what you are going through, never in my life seen things like this.

Sassy - so glad to hear cancer trip good news and brain okay.  So glad.

Dunes is in the storm too, in MA.  Our inlaws are in center of PA, hammering the house even down in the valley, wish they lived ona hill instead right now.

Into the fire, hurricanes and Frankenstorms.  Also exhaustion.

In Western Washington we are accustomed to news stories every year or so about salmon swimming across the roads or into someone's front yard but sharks?  No thanks!

Sas- you are an amazing woman, good job on all the preparedness info for everyone.

Sorry I have been off the boards for a while - needed a break, had low energy, needed to focus on other things here for a bit. But I have had you all in my heart and prayers, and especially those of you in Sandy's path.

Also, glad to hear you still have a brain, Sas!! ;) My first brain CT showed "something" that looked like "an old infarct", so DH has been calling it my "black hole" and teases me about the brain being sucked into it one of these days! Turns out those little "old infarcts" happen in just about everyone if you look at the autopsy data.... very reassuring.

We need to get the warming fire going strong as everyone reconnects and dries out after this horrendous storm.

Friends c&p'd this from FRR, hope you don't mind.

a nor'easter is going to hit the northeast this weekend. sucks.

Ginger and all-I've been trying to keep up on the reading. I had put allot of disaster stuff on Bonfires starting on Oct 26th. You may want to read and just make alist of stuff you can use for future referral. it was different than standard disaster stuff, figured didn't need to repeat standard stuff. Used to do disaster stuff.

Too many people did not get the significance of this storm. People in Florida woke up after Andrew, then Flloyd, Than the four in 2004, then 2008 with Fay that while it seemed harmless enough to begin with--it just wouldn't go away----three days of constant rain

Services cannot be returned without work--work requires people. Florida power and light has sent hundreds of trucks up north. They have done this ever since Andrew when so many people from other states sent there power people here. The cooperation between states on restoration of services is at an all time high in the history of the country. But think about the magnitude of this occurence. It affected all of the original thirteen colonies, the new frontiers of the Ohio valley, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Yes FEMA is there , but they can't do want an electrician can, they can't do what an experienced tree cutter can. Forget what state finally paired treecutters with an electrical team. Seems logical, but all is a learning experience.

Preparedness is multilevel 1. individual.2 county, 3. state, 4 national. You can reverse the order. Bottom line, is each has responsibilities. There is no one like our emergencies services in the world. They willing put their lives on the line for us everyday, but when it's b/c people didn't follow directions--what is that?

Make a list of what you need to prepare for a disaster. You can even prepare now by keeping important papers in one place( along with keeping master or copy in a safety deposit box). I keep 2 bags ahead on dog food. Bleach 4 pool containers and at least 3 regular bleach bottles, Paper products 4 weeks ahead. Canned stuff 4weeks---then start eating it in September. Water is touchy--don't like it to get too old. Iodine drops for water. Tap lights are great. Batteries. Garbage bags a box ahead. Know where your septic clean outs are. Create swales or french drains around your property.

Learn about surface water management --encourage your county to create a separate division for this purpose. Brevard County Florida has one of the best departments---compare it to Volusia county Florida which has flooded subs all the time.

I've had flood insurance since 1998---wasn't required where we live. It's now up to $376.00(started at $250). My Dh hated it, but my attitude was it was my Christmas gift, rather have it than any jewel. For the piece of mind that it gave me---well worth it. With the close calls of storms on the east coast across from the space center in Florida. Many a time when a storm was emminent, people said I'm going to get it---well doesn't go into effect right away(3 months), but once in place, it contiuous as long as premium is paid.

For those that are subject to other types of disasters---have a plan and a safe place. Documents ready to go.

You are the first person that can make yourself safe.  Love ya'll , glad we are all safe sassy

PTd ---just thinking of this now -----how often have we talked about taking a video of the house stuff to support claims....  Ptd --we share a common bond---you sit at a table trying to make the best plan to make people safe---think of all that could go wrong--plan for it---then sharks swim down the street-----and someone says why didn't you warn me....................................Duh

Going to transfer this to Bonfirers
