    Hi all

Finally had a decent meal today after having a migraine for 2 days. I had vegies and fish and soup. I had a PET scan on Friday and had to eat a high protein, low carb diet on Thursday. I think that it was something that I didn't eat that gave me the migraine. Not eating until after PET scan about 11am didn't help either.

I'm glad to see that everyone else is eating well.

I'm having surgery on Saturday October 1st to get a stent put in my right kidney as it's blocked, thanks to some cancer in my uterus.

I will be watching the Queen's funeral tomorrow. With Australia being a Commonwealth country it's been non stop news here. The last time that she was here in Australia it was here in Perth. I didn't go and see her though but there were thousands who did !!!

Thank you for the well wishes on DH; he is still in pain, but not from the cancer (pain is pain, and I feel so badly for him. I'm dreading if he needs back surgery).

Aussie, good luck with your surgery. Always unnerving. We are not a commonwealth and I am so over this queen-crap. Bad enough they are privileged by birth but then to foist this on the US...ugh..did they forget why the US exists, LOL. Sorry for the rant.

Our car won't be ready till next week. Rodents chewed some wires. Ugh. At least we were able to drive it in as is without the $400 towing.

Minus, feel free to share your rants and raves...a safe space. I always say, "happy to be here to complain about it..."

I cobbled together a spinach, sweet potato, zucchini and egg "cup" with melted cheese for a fast dinner yesterday (got home frustrated and angry about the car but have a fancy-schmancy loaner, so all good in that regard).

Maybe a frozen pizza tonight, depending on if we fish.

I walked alone yesterday morning (DH's back hurt too much) and was wearing my new hiking shoes to see if they were comfy for longer treks. There was some new repaving work and tar pouring on the street I cross. The shoes have big lug-nut-type soles. I was waving to a neighbor that I spotted and my shoe caught the end of the uneven repaving ..and down I went. OY. I hobbled home; put ice on the knee and ankle and then rubbed arnica into the areas. It seems I broke nothing, thankfully, but I did think of my oncologist, who missed a step on her step ladder, fell, broke a knee cap and has torn ligaments and needs a cane for a while. This morning, my knee is only scraped and mildly colored. My ankle is swollen and purple but I can easily walk on it. So no broken bones is a win for this old gal!! I had considered horse back riding for an occasional fun thing to do but now, I will rethink that, what with bones and possibility of falls.

Update: DH's back is not up to fishing so I am making palak "paneer" with naan bread (I use tofu for the paneer)

Sorry I've been so absent, what with dealing with the basement, prepping for Fri. night's Madison gig, and watching CLE videos. 21.5 hrs down, 9.5 to go.

Mentioned on another thread, but saw the neurologist on Tues., which was eye-opening. My back & leg problems are due not to the L-3-5 stenosis, but to sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction...caused by longstanding scoliosis which was never treated! I had always wondered why my front blouse buttons seemed off-kilter, with long necklaces hanging plumb but not tracking the buttons. When I had my first (R) knee replacement surgery, the anesthesiology resident trying to insert the epidural catheter hit it off-kilter and I nearly hit the ceiling (so from then on I insisted that nothing be administered to my spine without fluoroscopy; the anesthesiologist who did my epidural for my C-section did it by touch, actually palpating my vertebrae). The SI joint stenosis entraps the sciatic nerves leading to my piriformis muscles and consequent sciatica and possibly those tibial spasms as well. The neuro was aghast that not only had the scoliosis--dx'ed when I was 12 or 13--never been treated beyond admonitions to "not slouch," but also that nobody ever treating my occasional back attacks ever "connected the dots." Maybe because radiologists' reports had always called it "mild." She said, too, that I had the wrong kind of PT this time: the ortho I had seen at Skokie Hosp.'s walk-in clinic was a sportsmedicine specialist: "when you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail" was her remark. She's referring me to the system's clinic that specializes in neuro-oriented PT and vestibular therapy to improve balance. If none of that works, she will consider first shots into my piriformis muscles and then an (ouch) EMG. (It might also explain how back-of-knee pain I had in 2014 after hiking was misdiagnosed as a tear in the gastroc head, and my spring 2015 hip/thigh pain as "bursitis"--neither of which had any imaging other than X-rays and an US to administer an ineffective cortisone shot to the suspected hip bursa).

Wally, elevate that ankle as much as you can. A bit too late now for ice to accomplish anything, but bracing it with an ACE wrap (if you don't have an actual ankle brace) and using a cane on the opposite side--diagonal stride, bearing weight on the cane--would be wise. Arnica always helps ease bruising and muscle soreness. (Speaking as a lifelong ankle-sprainer).

Monday night was leftover salmon & veggies. Tues. we grilled brats, dogs & tomatoes. Wed. Bob had a drug co. dinner, and I had a mani Thurs., so I had Buffalo wings & celery sticks. He brought home broccolini. Thurs. night we went to L. Woods--shared a big wedge salad, Bob had the meatloaf & spuds special and I giant dry-rubbed beef ribs & green beans. Got so full on my half of the salad (of which I brought home half) that I could barely get through one rib. Fri. I had my gig in Madison (went very well), but we didn't go out for dinner--the duo with whom we sang in-the-round headed north in their camper to MN, and my singing partner went home to his wife who was having a bad fibromyalgia day. So I blew the intermittent fast (having had brunch at 1pm) and at 1am had my leftover salad with tomato, keto ice cream, and a bowl of keto cereal. Yesterday, back on my 16:8 schedule. Brunch was a keto "everything" bagel with schmear, lox, onion & tomato; dinner was leftover green beans, broccolini, and 2 of the 3 leftover beef ribs (felt like Fred Flintstone). Brunch today was avocado toast with veg & egg. Dinner? Depends on both when Bob gets home and the timing of the expected storms. If he gets home early enough (and is hungry), we'll walk to a nearby restaurant (Regalia, Indie Sushi, or Mas Alla Del Sol Mexican). If not, the remaining rib and veg.

Sandy, appreciate the pointers. I did ice it briefly the morning it happened, along with the arnica. The swelling seems to be going down. Scrapes on knee but funny, no bruising. I bruise very easily. I can walk without too much discomfort but did try to raise my leg this evening.

Leftover Palak paneer tomorrow if we go fishing in the afternoon.

Dinner was pork tenderloin with some leftover BBQ sauce (Carolina style which isn’t as sweet and has more vinegar than other styles), roasted zucchini with truffle and cheese seasoning and some panko, cucumbers and tomato salad, and some quinoa. Minustwo, I’m from Pittsburgh but we have a few BBQ places that use a southern style smoker for the meat. I don’t know what kind of wood they use but it probably isn’t mesquite (though I do like that). We usually go to a local place (Spork) for BBQ takeout but this time we wanted to go for a drive so we went to Pit Take in Greensburg.

Tomorrow I’m thinking of having some roast chicken with a side of spinach ravioli. It will be quick, which is helpful on a weeknight.

Tonight will be pizza at the Station inn in Nashville, TN. It's a live music venue that Sharon has been wanting to go to sine the last time (3 years ago) we were here.

It looks like a "dive" (maybe even a "plunge" which is a step below dive) bar, but has excellent (and often famous) bands booked for performances.

Papperadelle with sausage, zucchini, green beans in a marinara sauce. I made waaaaaaaaaaay too much. May freeze some of it tomorrow. Good for leftovers if we fish tomorrow. Skipped today to stay off ankle, which amazingly doesn't hurt much at all today and the swelling is down to near normal, plus too sunny. The fish hate the sun as much as I do, LOL.

Dinner was Fritos with my cocktail. We ate a heavy lunch in Fargo after delivering our resort neighbors Mary and Lyman to his daughter's house along with their luggage. They had a flight to Ocala, FL, early this morning. It will be odd not to have them next door for daily conversations and happy hour gatherings on their deck.

Our lunch was at the Tavern. I had a Reuben that was delicious.

We are watching the weather news with concern as a tropical storm is building force with the possibility of heading for the Gulf.

I am very ready to head home to Louisiana but would prefer not to arrive along with a hurricane. The leaves have suddenly begun to turn colors almost overnight.

Leftovers last night and same tonight. Skipped fishing--too sunny and wind blowing in our face. Only 3 days left unless they open the season. Always sad. I also slept very poorly last night so am dragging today.

What do you guys do when you can't sleep? Get up and do something? Just lay there and hope? Hate nights like that.

wallycat, I usually do what the experts say not to do—I read articles on my phone until I get sleepy again. Oh well, it works for me .😁

I noticed that FemmePharma has sleep aid product with Melatonin and other things. I might try that, but I don’t typically have trouble getting to sleep at the beginning of the night, it’s more a problem of hot flashes and other maladies waking me up and not being able to get back to sleep. A friend of mine says marijuana gummies help her sleep through the night, but I’m not sure if medical marijuana is worth the hassle. Plus, THC isn’t good for brain cells and I need all of those.

Dinner was coconut rice, lime zest roasted carrots and a Barramundi fillet with cumin and a charred pineapple-scallion and lime salsa. Tomorrow will be a Thai inspired rice bowl with mushrooms, ground pork, red bell pepper, scallions and a sweet chili sauce.

Wally - I turn the light on and read in bed. Yup - another no,no. You're supposed to get OUT of bed. Sometimes I read for an hour or two - and that works OK for me. Since I'm retired, most mornings I don't have to be up at any certain time. But you can bet, the very morning I have a doc appointment at 9am, I will wake up at 2am and be awake until 5am.

I had lunch with my nephew at the Hare Krishna restaurant. He's a vegan but even on the days when it's vegetarian, he can find plenty to eat. This evening I ate 5 small coconut cookies dipped in chocolate.

Last night's dinner was pork roast and brown gravy cooked in the small slow cooker. I used dry roux to make the gravy. It was delicious over brown rice. Now that our summer in MN is almost over, I have mastered cooking brown rice on the camper stove. Our side was baked sweet potato. A satisfying winter meal in Louisiana.

Today is supposed to be a rainy day with showers off and on all day. DH is watching the tropical weather news closely.

Eric, it's very hard to find bad live music in Nashville (except for the tourist trap bars with cover bands). Have fun!

Temps turned sharply colder here yesterday even though we didn't get much in the way of rainstorms Tues. night. Highs in the low 60s. Turned on the heat last night for the first time since May!

Tues. night I made scampi with some large (16/20) Key West pink shrimp, along with crisper-culling the still-edible sugar snap & snow peas and an ear of bicolor corn (as usual I had 2" of the tip). Wed. night we went to Regalia, where Bob had the tuna carpaccio & I the stuffed zucchini blossoms, shared a salad, and each had flounder piccata with roast cauliflower. Last night I grilled shoulder lamb chops (S&P, rubbed with crushed garlic & herbes de Provence) and asparagus I marinated in EVOO and balsamic; also nuked Kevin's keto cauliflower "mac"& cheese--added a little black truffle oil and a grating of fresh nutmeg. Berries, nuts & dark chocolate for dessert. Tonight, probably make shrimp remoulade & a salad. I did buy a half-loaf of "miche" sourdough from La Fournette--ate half a heel of it just because I wanted to. Delicious and eminently carb-worthy (especially with Irish butter & a fried egg). Tonight we'll eat early-ish, as both of us need to be out of the house by 9am--Bob for work & me for Bar Show rehearsal downtown (first in-person one since 2019).

Thanks ladies for your sleep reports. I just lay there, also not recommended, LOL.

Went fishing tonight and no fish; brought hard cooked eggs and hummus to the beach. (I posted this earlier but it didn't seem to take)

We had leftover pork roast meal with addition of a chopped salad with mayo dressing.

We'll be home in about 3 hours.

No dinner tonight...we both have a cold (sore throat & runny nose) and don't feel like eating.

    wallycat Member Posts: 1,466

    Eric, hope you feel better.

Skipped fishing tonight--too sunny and free park day meant too crowded and parking would be icky.

I made a Chinese garlic eggplant with tofu and japanese rice. Leftovers tomorrow.

Last night's dinner was a desperation casserole/hot dish made with two chicken thighs and a box of turkey dressing mix. I simmered the thighs in water with seasonings and chopped onion and celery. Deboned the chicken, measured out the right amount of chicken broth, and mixed with the dressing mix. I had added a half stick of butter to the broth. Transferred the mixture to a baking dish and cooked 30 minutes at 350 in the convection/microwave oven on convection setting. Made gravy with the remaining chicken broth by adding a flour slurry.

Side was caesar salad with tender romaine leaves and romano cheese. Homemade caesar dressing of mustard, olive oil and wine vinegar.

Tonight we will go to Clancy's. I need a break from cooking.

It looks like Ian is going to target Florida. I am so-o-o-o ready to go home to Louisiana. The weather here would be very tolerable when living in a house but not in a camper. It's supposed to be sunny today but windy with high about 60. I plan to get out and clean up Mary's little garden plot.

I have a man cold... not sure what Sharon has! :-) At least ibuprofen works wonders on hiding the sore throat.

I'm not sure what we're going to eat tonight. We got the refrigerator mostly empty before we left, so we need to do some shopping today. But then, after stepping on the scale, maybe we shouldn't eat for awhile. Restaurant food on road trips does not go well with weight maintenance.

    chisandy Member Posts: 11,408

Weight control or not, ABC's Dr. Jen Ashton said today that honey is great for colds & sore throats--honey is actually antibacterial & antifungal. (That's why it keeps forever without refrigeration). Don't go nuts with it, but a couple of spoonfuls in your warm herbal tea is a great idea). At least that's what I'll tell my weight mgmt. NP tomorrow--when we got back from temple and after a late light chili supper, we did the traditional apple slices, honey and round challah. I didn't cook dinner because my tummy was touchy after a late Sat. night high-fiber carb-cheat (seeded keto bread and dried figs).

Not sure what we'll do for dinner tonight--depends on when Bob gets home. If very late, I will nuke some wings with celery sticks & blue cheese dressing. I use the no-sugar Whole Foods 365 brand, and add some Roth Buttermilk Blue crumbles. Gonna make myself avocado toast with tomato, shallot & egg for brunch. (Back on the 16:8 intermittent fast schedule).

    wallycat Member Posts: 1,466

I'm going to use the last of the leftover rice and make a fried rice of some sort.

I am reading a back issue of New Scientist that had the Longevity Diet article in it. I was quite dismayed that one scientist indicated the intermittent fasting may not be all we think. Since no human studies have been published, there are mouse trials. 1/3 mice saw no benefit; 1/3 saw a decrease in life/early mortality; 1/3 saw the longevity effect. They can't figure out what the trigger is for any of the results.

Thinking of all in the storms path, that you stay safe and well.

Gut issues today had me send hubs out for an easy on the gut Italian dish.

Below is picture of an awesome Baileys Irish Cream French toast we had for Sunday brunch at a local Irish pub. Good thing this is a one-off or my 5 ft. 1" frame would show it more than it does.

Hey all! Cut Colorado short, which was unfortunate on many fronts as we were having a great time, and flew home to prep very late Sunday night. Chisandy - thought of you as I spent a few hours in the airport in Chicago en route to Tampa. DD has relocated her horse to a cinder block stall at the fairgrounds, as he is normally a field horse. Her house has impact glass but she is only two houses from the line where the mandatory evac is. We are north of town but will still get at the least some crazy wind and rain. My BIL/SIL live in St Pete, not staying but their son is. DH is prepping outside mostly at both houses, I am cooking everything in the freezer and re-freezing, shopped yesterday for non-perishables, everyone in the store was calm, polite, and kind to each other. We already have a ton of water due to DD’s annual event leftovers, and filled our cars with gas. We already had extra propane tanks for the grill, and cash in the safe. Will also safeguard important papers and mementos we can’t replace and photos. Cross your fingers for us! Will report in when I can - I charged all my extra phone chargers for when/if we lose power but fortunately our lines are buried, however we could lose transformers or have a preemptive shut down.

reader - omg, that looks delish! Highlight of our trip food wise was pumpkin brioche French toast and bacon we made on our last day

Hope everyone can be safe; thinking about all of you dealing with this yuck.

I thawed some brats and will cut them into small circles and use them to make a big pot of vegetable, bean and "sausage" soup. I start my colonoscopy prep on Saturday, which means low residue food for 3 days, then 1 day of fasting + preppy-yuck...and then the big day. Not happy but hope my last one required. Ha, I should buy my bags of potato chips...can't get more no-fiber-low residue than that...but I won't.

Happy new year, chisandy. We had some fresh honeycrisp apples and honey, but we skipped the challah. Dinner was roasted new potatoes, asparagus, cheesy zucchini bake, and tilapia, which isn’t a traditional Rosh Hashanah dinner, but we took a Sunday drive and I didn’t have anything else readily available. The zucchini bake was a “spur of the moment” addition to use a small zucchini that I bought at a farm stand. I shedded it and mixed it with 1/2 c Kodiak pancake mix, 2 eggs, a small onion, a mix of Manchego and Parmesan, garlic and oregano. I baked it in 4 mini quiche pans. We shared one of the bakes and saved the rest for lunch. I would make that again. The original recipe called for 3 c zucchini and 3 eggs but I only had enough for half a recipe.

Last night we had leftover potatoes with figgy balsamic chicken (a favorite in our house). I made the rest of the asparagus with a bit of cardamom butter. Yum! Tonight I made a simple salad while I reheated the last of the new potatoes and baked chicken thighs topped with panko, Frank’s wing sauce and a little Mexican blend cheese. Tomorrow will probably be fish or maybe pasta.

Reader, I’m a fan of Bailey’s Irish Cream, but I never thought to put it in French toast. Can’t wait to try that!

Special, I’m hoping and praying that everyone stays safe in FL. My Dad bought gas for their generator but we hope they don’t have to use it. Mom said the lines at the gas station were long and that the stores were out of bottled water as everyone prepares.

Special - what a mess. Yes, please do check in when you can. Thinking about everyone else in Florida too.

Eric - mobilized!!! Hope your 'man cold' isn't too obnoxious in the 'barrack'. Two hours at home??? Wow... You'll have to fill us in about the new digs for the DD after the storm deployment.

Reader - French toast with Bailey's? Something new to try. Yum. Think I'll have that tomorrow w/leftover sourdough bread.

I've been working for a week prepping for a HUGE meeting tonight. So the only meal yesterday was a hot dog at 10pm. I literally forgot to eat. Today I had 3 hard boiled eggs at 5pm since I needed the energy for the meeting. And then due to all the contentious owners who had no idea about the issues & just wanted to argue - I came home at 9:30pm and had TWO gin & tonics and now sipping a Tuaca. Face it - we can work with the City and School District to request the safety enhancements we'd like - or they can just take our property by imminent domain & we get nothing. That just doesn't seem like a hard concept to me.

I've been taking one of the anti-cold zinc pills and, for colds, they always seem to a good job for me. The symptoms are completely gone.
