Good luck neomom! Let us know how it goes. Welcome Tiffany!

    Thanks for the Linley specialK!

Auntie, since you are such a fan, how do you cook kohlrabi? I've tried a few different ways since I got it from the CSA, but wasn't thrilled with any of them.

Carrie and Lacey, theNP gave me celexa for mood and said it also helped with hot flashes. I was so angry for awhile, was just snapping out all the time, the celexa really got me back tomy old self. Didn't really do anything with the hot flashes. I stopped taking it now though.

Fried pork chops and had a salad with it tonight. Not very exciting. Good though.

Michelle, good to see you again. Hope tax was okay. (((Hugs)))

Welcome Tiffany......and Charlotte....good luck tomorrow. Hope you get to listen to good music during your MRI. I enjoyed listening to oldies when I had mine this week, and played a little game with myself to see if I could "name that tune" over the noise of the machine during the last series of images. :) Anything to keep amused!

Kay, I love making matzo ball soup since my DH was raised Jewish also and appreciates when I make that familiar food item! Yes, the matzo balls are pretty easy to make with the meal in the box.

Speaking of chicken soup, that's what I made tonight, thick with orzo, for a friend who visited for dinner. We had some garlic bread topped with roasted tomatoes and a bit of parmesan. Lots of girlfriend guests recently. I love cooking casual meals for them! In one of my chicken soups, I added spinach and some mint, which was interesting.

Ditto on having breakfast food for dinner....Yum! Now there's an idea for tomorrow night. ;)

Tonight was homemade French Onion Soup and open-faced turkey melts.  I had my port flushed and some labs at the MO - I am having a PET scan next month and seeing the MO right after so I had the brilliant idea to have the labs drawn today so the results would be ready when I see the MO - however, that made me get home later so soup and sandwiches it was!

Kay, I've only ever had kohlrabis when they're small to medium, so I usually just slice and saute them in butter and garlic. I've also steamed them and treated them like broccoli.

Michelle:  Your DD sounds so special!  She has been great to keep us updated on your condition...and we're all praying for the most positive outcome you can have!  It's good to see you online again!

I have been really bad about cooking since coming back to Fl for the winter.  We ate both lunch and dinner out yesterday...almost unheard of unless we're out of town, which we will be all next week.  Headed to Orlando...Disney...to take in some of the sights.  Wish I had the grandkids with me, but really they are too young...3 and 18 months.  It wears you out, and they don't even remember it....then you have to take them back...LOL!  I think 4 or 5 is a better age to start....so I'll begin saving for that trip!

Lacey:  I've had a terrible time off and on sleeping since my dx.  I have resisted any kind of sleeping meds thus far except tylenol PM which I take nightly.  It doesn't seem to help much.  I go to sleep fine but then wake up in the middle of the night and lay there for what seems like hours before dropping off again.  I'm always awake at the break of dawn, no matter what.

Funny story about the veal!  My DGD who is a vegetarian told me a story about working at Chipolte Grill.  She said they were told all the animals had a good life before they died to which I replied, "honey, that's all any of us want....a good life".

Have a great weekend everyone.  I check in when I return.

Do sleep issues go along with a BC diagnosis? I don't know anyone dealing with this crap who can sleep anymore. My doc just scheduled me for a sleep study. I don't think I have a sleep apnea and I don't think a cpap is going to cure what ails me.

I have just one suggestion for sleeping problems - temazepam.  Even 7.5 mg makes a big difference.

Today for lunch I had the leftover clam chowder from Wednesday night's lobsterfest.  It was still wonderful and we will buy our chowder from Shyer's from now on...or until I feel up to making some from scratch.

Today's rads went well and I am not having any side effects yet, except I was ready for bed at 9:30.  Early for me!

Luv: great news on the SE's for you - long may they stay away and kick those nasty, bugger mets into touch.  Lunch sounds lovely.  You are such an inspiration on these boards - thank you.

Dinner for me is chicken thighs with a bacon & onion stuffing with new potatoes and some kind of green veg..  maybe kale.

Hugs and a wonderful weekend to you all xxxx

Chiming in on the sleep issues....not sure if everyone who has BC has them. but certainly a host of gals who are on tamoxifen seem to. In my discussion with my MO this week she thought that the reason I was having such irregular sleep had to do with the temp regulation issues I was having throughout the night yet not realizing it. That's why she prescribed the neurontin which would address the "hot flashes", since she said that if I addressed my sleep issue with a sleep aid, I would still be bothered by the temp dysregulation my body experiences now, so it would not really be addressing what was going on....and my sleep would still be interrupted. I am not sure how I feel about this neurontin drug, but will give it a week or so to see if anything changes.

Made a pumpkin cake today which I will frost with cream cheese icing. About to make some oatmeal/cranberry cookies to bring to an election celebration tomorrow night. May also bring cheese stuffed jalapeno's wrapped in bacon for an appetizer. They afe to die for if you like a bit of a kick!

Michelle, so happy for you that the rads are going well....but yes, fatigue would easily set in, so that you would be joining the "early to bedders"! ((((HUGS))))

And Joyce, hope you get some rest this weekend. You do amaze me with your travel/work schedule!

    Best to everyone....

Michelle  Glad you are tolerating the rads so far...hang in there.

I hear a lot of women having sleep issues while going through menopause, whether having BC or not.  I too think its the temp regulation thing that wakes us up, my heart tends to race when this happens also and then I am awake for the rest of the night, then I am tired and want to nap in the day, then I cant sleep at night, then nap etc. etc. etc.

I still have an upset stomach, its been a week, no cooking for me, sticking to chicken noodle soup from a can till this is resolved.

    Welcome Tiffany and Chaarlotte

Yes, sleep issues are not fun. I just wake up and can't go to sleep again. If I can get at least three hrs in a row I can make it through the day. If I get longer, I get through it a bit better! LOL. But, I no longer fight it, and if I am awake, I get up and read or crochet til I am sleeppy again. Then at least I am not stressed about trying to sleep. Much love.

Michelle,.get the rest you need even if its early. Your DD is an amazing woman, wonder where she got it, LOL, no, jk, I know where!

Dinner will ne a fish fry, I hope, it sounds so good. I hope my DH comes home in time to go with me. Much love

Carrie, so sorry your stomach is jumpy, I know that feeling too well. Long history of stomach issues. I'm long past menopause and letrozole is my poison. I've gone the ambien route, and I like it well enough but don't want to take it as often as I need it. My doc just prescribed trazadone which did nothing but keep me awake. The hot flashes no longer keep me awake thanks to effexor.

Michelle, never heard of that one, I'll check it out, thanks. Hope you're experiencing the worst SE you're going to have.

    Tazzy, that chicken sounds yummy.

Guests for dinner tonight. Menu is bbq'd ribs with a pineapple/lime/soy sauce glaze, a new potato crockpot recipe with bacon onions and cheese, chopped salad and French apple cake for dessert.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

I'm on arimidex (generic), not tamoxifen.  I take 75 mg Effexor generic and it helps quite a bit with the temperature fluctuation.  I get "warm flushes," but not hot flashes.  However, my body temp. runs warm.  Temp. in the 60's feels great to me and other women will be wearing sweaters.  I take the arimidex at night and also take a benedryl knockoff that I buy at Sam's Club.  I sleep very well.  Some nights I'm up a couple of times going to the bathroom but get back in bed and go right to sleep.  Nothing is more miserable than insomnia.

Michelle, it's so good to read your posts.  Sure hope those rads are doing a lot of damage to the mets.

Here's the WW Pork Piccata recipe that a couple of people were interested in.

In a small bowl, combine 3 T. all-purpose flour, 1/2 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp black pepper.  Cut 1 lb. lean pork tenderloin into 16 pieces.  Flour both sides of pork medallions, shaking off excess.

Heat 2 tsp. olive oil (I used 1 T.) in large skillet over med.-high heat.  Cook pork medallions about 1 1/2 min. on both sides until golden brown.  Set aside on serving plate and cover to keep warm.

In a cup, whisk together 3/4 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth, 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice,  2 tsp. cornstarch, 1/4 tsp. salt and 1/8 tsp black pepper.  Pour into same skillet and whisk to combine with drippings.  Simmer until slightly thickened.  Remove skillet from heat.  Stir in 2 tsp. salted butter until melted.  (I used 1 T. butter)  Stir in 1 T. capers, drained.  (I rinsed the capers)  Spoon sauce over pork.

I made this dish about an hour ahead of time.  I returned the pork medallions to the skillet, spooned sauce over them and covered the skillet with a lid.  When dh and I had finished our drinks and were ready to eat, I warmed up the medallions and sauce.

Recipe Note:  the sauce is lemony.

I'm not cooking tonight!  Yay!  DH and I are going to a neighbor's house to play a couple of games of pool.  Then the four of us are going to a nice restaurant for dinner.  I checked out the menu last night on my computer and have my choices narrowed down to three selections in the seafood section of the menu.

Tazzy - I thought it was funny to see you say that you like breakfast for dinner.  I don't even like breakfast for breakfast, and would rather have warmed over dinner (like stew or soup) for breakfast...

Nance - I only use tender kohlrabi, and then I peel, slice fine (I use a mandolin) and add them to salad.  I don't really like them cooked.

I have to work late - again - so hubby is taking me out for Thai food on the way home!!!  I LOVE Thai.

Job #3, the one with US Department of Health and Human Services, has just come to the forefront. I've been put on deployment alert. So, until further notice, I have to keep my gear with me so I can leave within 2 hours of being called.

I don't know if I'll be going anywhere, but if I do, my food will likely be MREs or maybe Power Bars.

Gardengumby  funny to hear you say that about breakfast.  I worked the night shift for 10 years so breakfast for me was leftover dinner when I came home home from work at 7am then off to bed and when I got up at about 1 or2 in the afternoon I would have a bowl of  cereal. The kids and I just learned to eat whatever/whenever. My sons favorite was french toast for dinner.

Thanks Carole for that recipe  sounds yummy

No clue for dinner, might just make some pasta. I didn't get my results today, hopefully Monday. I was so disappointed and now more anxious than ever. My youngest son punched me right in the boob that had the biopsy done on Thursday. He has Autism and just got rowdy and didn't mean to, it's not like domestic violence or anything. It hurt though and after ice and 4 tylenol it was still hurting so I had to call the doc and beg for something stronger. Much better now : ) . I hope you all have a nice weekend.

carberry - I used to work nightshift, too - though to be honest my aversion to breakfast food came long before that.  My mom made gawdawful breakfasts and I hate eggs.

gardengumby: that makes sense if you had awful brekkies as a kid.  funny but I was not an egg lover until I came to Canada - dunno what there was about them in England, but urgh !

    Stuffed chicken was delish.

neomom: happy to hear you are feeling better now - ouch !

Hope everyone has a good weekend xx

Neomom, as Tom Petty said, the waiting is the hardest part. Hang in there.

Eric, what is this you're on call for? Whatever it is, I hope you don't get called.

I could eat breakfast any time. Then again, I can also eat leftover pizza for breakfast. Good grief, I guess I can just eat anything.

Was just DD and me for dinner last night, so I treated her to Bertucci's. had the endless soup and salad. Shrimp and corn chowder, it was yummy. Made her some pills bury cinnamon buns for breakfast. They are good. Ground some coffe beans and the coffee was delish.

Michelle, I am guessing you get the weekend off from rads. In any case, take it easy and enjoy the weekend. Thinking about you. Take care.

Yes, this weekend is off but next saturday is a treatment day.  that means I will finish on Monday before thanksgiving.  So hopefully the fatigue will be better by then and I will be able to go to Las Vegas on the Friday after thanksgiving.  We went out for pizza and salad last night.  I was tired afterwards, but it was nice to do something normal with my family.  Of course, I couldn't sleep for a while...damn steroids!

Michelle, I hope you rest up this weekend.

My dinner out last night was very good.  Big luscious Louisiana shrimp in lemon garlic butter sauce.  Broiled tomatoes.  Salad greens with a yummy blue cheese dressing.  All the entrees at this restaurant are good.  The service is excellent.  And the bill makes you wince!  That's why we don't eat dinner out often.  Coming from my thrifty background, I don't like paying the same amt. for a meal that I would pay for a cart full of groceries!

I don't know what dinner will be tonight.  Maybe fish.

Kohlrabi was one of the veggies we saw at farmers' markets up in MN this summer.  I bought some and tried it.  The recommendation was to peel and slice thin and eat it raw with lemon juice and olive oil.  Or to eat it as a snack with a dip.  It tastes very good raw.  I didn't try cooking it.

    Has anyone tried Turkish eggplant?

Michelle, Back when I had radiation, it wiped me out completely. Far worse than chemo. Hope you have a comfy chair and a warm blanket so you can rest and be warm.

We are on the Cape now. Two nights ago we made the Striper Bass that my friend had cooked, served with a salsa verde, avocado and pickled red onions. This recipe was a total winner. So delicious! Last night we went to the Elk's Friday fish fry. Eh. The fish was good but whoever was manning the fryer wasn't a master. The price was right at $8 per plate of fish and chips, and of course, the proceeds benefit their children programs.

I have a leg of lamb marinating in the fridge. A mixture of mustard, wine, olive oil, TONS of garlic, and a bunch of herbs. We will roast this later with a bunch of root vegetables that are also rubbed with herbs. I have high hopes for this.
