    Kay,

I just made a striped bass on the Cape this weekend, and I tried a totally new recipe. Oh my goodness was it delicious! You might try this, but not sure it will pair well with pasta.

I have been out of the country for the last week and a half with no internet service. Got back home in the wee hours of yesterday morning...

    Michelle,

I just read Christine's post and am so sorry that you are having to go through all of this! I know you are one tough lady but, geeeez, enough already!! I hope that the WBR does it's thing and that those mets are sent to fry in hell, where they belong and that any side effects are minimal!

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers....

Susan - the striper bass recipe sounds absolutely delicious.  When we were in Paris we tasted a salted encrusted whole fish that was spectacular.  Tonight's dinner is compliments of Christine's sister-in-law.  She made a beef and butternut squash chili and I tasted  it last night - so good!

I'm looking forward to tomorrow's coq au vin with lots of bacon.  My husband and son are going to be spoiled.  Laughing

I am ever so grateful for all the help, it means the world to me.

And thank you Seaside.  Where did you go?  I hope it was somewhere wonderful.

    Michelle,

I saw that promise of bacon. It made me smile. They may be spoiled, but eventually they will be dying for some of the dishes that have to be cooked a la minute. Braises and soups can actually get tiresome, so I have been told. I hope that you have been able to eat. Sometimes radiation takes away the appetite.

I plan to pick up at least one more of your meal days. Have a request? PM if you do.

Both those meals sound good Michelle! I am glad you're eating so well.

Thanks for that recipe Susan. I didn't have a whole fish, my boss filleted it and gave me a fillet. He said the fish he caught was 49 inches. The fillet he gave me was about an inch and a half thick. I used the the recipe you gave to make a marinade for it, then baked it in the oven. It was good, even DD and DS said so. It was a meaty fish, tasted kind of like chicken to me. I think I prefer flakier fish. Had some roasted broccoli, a salad and some garlic bread with it. A good meal!

    Eric, hope all is well.

DH cooked a big pot of lentil soup today.  We had the soup for dinner with a slaw made of napa cabbage and cucumber.  My yellow bell pepper was bad.

I found American lamb chops on sale today.

I had an apt in Milwaukee today, and ran into rush hour traffic. (That's my story and I am sticking with it) So rather than drive in that, I stopped at Cheesecake factory for dinner. It was before 5 so I got the lunch menu. Had a small arugula salad with almond, and golden raisens with the lemon and olive oil dresssing and the small portion of pasta with sundried tomatoes and ricotta and parmesan cheese. And ate only half of it. You all would be so proud of me. I DIDN'T eat a cheesecake! Of course I bought one piece to take home! LOL

Eric, be safe wherever they send you.

    To all much love.

Moonflower  That sounds like a well deserved special treat.  That was the only eay I got through the every day drive to radiation (an hour away) was to give myself permission to shop or eat in that town that I dont travel to very often.

We did chicken salad last night, my Dh had his leftover burger with his. I had some cranberry stilton cheese crumbled on top that made it yummy.

Michelle sounds like you are getting some awesome cuisine! Enjoy and hope you are doing well, think of you every day:)

Michelle, check in when possible.  It feels good to see your picture!  I think of you a lot, too.

We have cool crisp weather this morning.  I have a 10:30 hair apptment and should go walk.  But I got a smart phone yesterday and have been fooling around with it.  I also got another gadget, a tiny little monitor that keeps track of all your movements and exercise and computes WW points.  Another reason to go walk!  My gadgets are fighting each other!

Dinner tonight will be steak.  Probably baked small sweet potatoes from the CSA.  And chopped salad.  The blanched cauliflower and broccoli need to be eaten.  I have a ribeye and two flat iron steaks in the freezer, both from SD.  I think I'll thaw the flat iron steaks.

I'm resting. They put us in the Hilton across the street from the WTC. Tomorrow or later tonight I'll be in tents (heated) and cots. There is a lot of planning work for the responders to work in the field..that is what was happening today.

Eric - it's good to hear from you.  I hope things go well.

Lacey (Pat) and her DH stopped by with dinner for us.  I am looking forward to coq au vin, stuffed mushrooms, salad, bread, dessert and a bottle of wine. It smells really good in here.  How am I ever going to thank you all for your kindness???

Carole - I am getting my hair cut on Saturday then Christine is taking me wig-shopping.  Should be quite an adventure with her sense of humor.  Who knows what she has in mind for me!

Michelle  OH NO  not the hair again?  Well, at least  we already know how beautiful you are with or without hair...and you are a superior hair grower!!  Enjoy the wig shopping, it can be fun to try new styles and will keep yur head warm in the winter.

What exactly is coq au vin?

Where is Debbie and Laurie?  Miss you guys..hope all is well

    Michelle,

We were in the Caribbean on a cruise of the southern islands and, yes, it was wonderful! It was a trip to celebrate our 25th Anniversary, my 50th birthday and just life in general! First time we have left our kids, young adults really, home alone... So far I haven't heard any complaints from the neighbors so, I think they were good...

Actually, I have you in a way to thank for it.... About the time I was enjoying reading of your adventures in Paris and wishing I could be there too, I got an e-mail from a travel company about a Mediterranean cruise for a great price... Problem was the airfare put it out of our budget..... But I had already been bitten by the travel bug! Found a cruise that fit our budget and the rest is history.... And we did visit St Maarten and they do have a french side...lol!

    Eric,

Bless you and all that have come to help those areas devastated by Sandy. The night we left for our cruise we ate at an Applebee's on our way out of town and there was a caravan of 10-15 utility trucks from Michigan and the guys were all heading to NJ...

Having lived through 2 major floods in our area within 5 years, I can say they will need all the help they can get....

Hope tonight finds everyone well! Still struggling to get caught up on laundry, groceries, etc! Dinner tonight is Spaghetti and Meatballs... Should be good but, I sure do miss eating out every night on the cruise... sniffle.....

So first of all, I must say a big thank you to Lacey and her DH for delivering a fantastic dinner.  Coq au vin (chicken with a beautiful rich brown sauce infused with mushrooms, carrots and other delicious flavors then baked with bacon.  It was so good, as was the stuffed mushrooms, wild rice, salad with dijon vinaigrette and pumpkin bars for dessert.  We loved every morsel and luckily there is enogh for lunch for me tomorrow!

Did you stop and get the shrimp at Shyers?  I hope it lived up to expectations.

Seaside - we went to St. Maarten about 20 years ago (on my husband's company) and stayed on the French side...it was a feast for my hubby's eyes!!!

Eric - hope you are having a safe and productive day.

We're having something completely different for dinner...

Two of my husband's co-workers in Chicago (we're in the Los Angeles area) sent two deep dish pizzas from a place called Lou Malnati's.  They were packed in dry ice and were packaged as part of a Taste of Chicago promotion so he's heating up one of those and we'll have our favorite salad along with it (Arugula/Extra Virgin Olive Oil/Lemon Juice/Sea Salt/Ground Pepper/ Shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano).

I've been passing on the parmigiano-reggiano but it's good with or without the cheese.  It's also good with a few Stacy's pita chips crumbled on top (the pita chips work well with the lemon juice).

Michelle....so glad that you enjoyed the meal! I really enjoyed making it for you....and as I said today, I have not used that recipe since the 70's, but recalled that bacon was the base for flavoring, so knew it would be appealing to you....French comfort food!

It was great to visit today, and see for real the famous recliner with the water/ nature views....so peaceful! Yes we stopped at Shyers and got some steamers and extra large shrimp. The steamers were so tasty, and we had the shrimp with linguini, garlic, artichokes, peppers and parmesan ( inspired by the many Italian restaurants we passed on the way to Shyers!) Yummmmm.....happily stuffed. And by the way your spontaneous directions to Shyers were spot on!! That should mean something. :) It was wonderful to see you looking so good, Michelle!

Eric, I'm sure you are missing your girls, (and vice versa) but how lucky the Sandy survivors are to have your attentive care and talent. Thank you! Hope you can get some good NYC eats while there, not just "military type cuisine".

Seaside, sounds like a great vacation!

Yes, Debbie, Laurie, Bedo, et. al., hope to hear from you soon, and that you are all well.

    LeeA,

My DH and I have been attempting different recipes for the deep dish pizza that we had once when passing through Chicago... It was soooooo good and so different from the NY style and Sicilian style pizza that we are used to. From looking up different recipes we came across Lou Malnati's as a Chicago pizza icon! Hope your pizza was really good!!

Seems the actual recipe that each restaurant uses is a closely guarded secret.... Our current favorite recipe after a few tries is one from America's Test Kitchen....

Hi everyone!  I don't know if it is the weather changing or what, but I seem to be in a funk?  Little motivation yet needing to do so much as always.  It was warm yesterday and we spent it outside almost the whole day- park from 10-1 and back out with neighbors from 2-5, we all slept great ;P

This past weekend we went to a menu tasting at Wild Buffalo Wings that is opening in a a town near us and we went with a big group of friends for a free dinner.  It was VERY loud and the food was just ok- nothng special but we had a great time chatting and trying the different foods.  We had some big hot pretzels with different dipping sauces for an appetizer along with some blue cheese spicy dip with chips (I don't know what it was because i didn't order it but it was good).  Had a chicken sandwich wrap which was ok.

Tonight I made stuffed shells and a caesar salad.  I was craving it and so it hit the spot!  Everyone ate well at dinner and so I have little left over.

Michelle- Your dinner sounds like it was wonderful- I keep trying to figure out how I am going to bring you dinner?  I am glad you are being so well taken care of.  Enjoy your beautiful view and let others take care of you- you have earned it!!  I think of you many times during the day and am sending you lots of love.

Eric- Take care while you are taking care of others :)

    Seaside- Your trip sounds awesome!

Debbie- I hope you are doing ok....hugs.

Lacey- I am glad you enjoyed a wonderful dinner after making such a great dinner for Michelle-  YAY!

Hugs to you all Carrie, Carol, Kay, Deb, Joyce and everyone I am missing...it is late :)

and a BIG welcome to all the new people posting!!

Michelle wish I lived closer so I could help with the meals, but kinda glad I don't! Not sure I'd be able to pull off those kinda meals! LOL sounds like Lacey nailed it though.

Eric, hope it doesnt snow while you're out there, it did flurry around here, and its 28 degrees. Guess winter is not far off.

LeeA, that salad sounded like the one I had yesterday, except mine had almonds and raisins. I hope you enjoyed the deep dish pizza, nothing quite like it. Did it have double cheese? If you could see it on top then it did, otherwise the cheese is hidden on the bottom. LOL Seaside glad you enjoyed the trip. Much love to all.

I'm not much of a cook but luckily DH is. Tonight he made a butternut squash slice with sage, almost crispy kale, fried eggplant and fried green tomatoes. Dessert was pumpkin pie from the jack-o-lantern.

    LeeA Member Posts: 1,092

    Hi Moonflwer -

I'm not sure if it had double cheese but there was a lot of it and I just said the heck with it for tonight - meaning, worrying about dairy.

Oh, and I love arugula!  Your salad sounds really good as well!  We just ran out of it again tonight so tomorrow my hub will have to make an arugula run.  I'm also in the throes of my late fall addiction to pomegranate arils.  This is the best time of year to find them - at least out here.

As far as the pizza goes - it was delicious.  I grew up in a suburb of Chicago and was never a big deep dish fan but the crust on this pizza was really good - especially considering it had traveled in a UPS truck on dry ice a few hours before.  We had the vegetable pizza tonight.  In the next week or so we'll try the sausage pizza.

Hi everyone! Just got back from a 6 day trip about 3 hours ago and spent the last hour or so catching up on all the posts I missed!

Michelle- First thing I wanted to do was make sure you were doing OK! Sounds like you are being very well cared for with all the wonderful sounding dinners. I hope the WBR is gentle on you but kicks the crap out of those nasty suckers!

Deb- Hope you are feeling better vertigo can take a toll on the body!

Carrie- Hope you get those stomach issues checked out could be somthing serious!

Seaside- You finally got your birthday cruise! Yippe! Better late than never! LOL! Glad you had a good time though.

Eric- You are so awesome! Stay safe!

Lacey- Your dinner you made Michelle sounded so yummy!

Laurie-Sorry you are in such a funk it is hard to get out of it once you are in it. You are always so busy and having 2 small children at home can take a lot out of you. Are you still feeling a little sick? Maybe you just need a good rest. We went to a place called buffalo wild wings last week in Portland I wondered if you meant that or was it wild buffalo wings? Our food also was just so-so and the place was loud, I don't like a place you can't talk because it's so loud. Hope you feel better!

Sorry for anyone I missed but I did pretty good for this late at night! ;-))

We went to Porltand last Thursday for DH to see a neurologist he is considering having the surgery to remove the tumor since his symptoms are getting much worse he can't drive and is now walking with a cane. I'm using oxygen most the time and we look like quite the pair walking together. LOL! Then we drove to see my dad it was his birthday on Friday had a big party for him, just close family b/c he didn't want to many people around. I hadn't seen him since me and my sister drove down to see him (almost 4 months) he had lost almost 80 pounds his hair was falling out and what was left was grey and he looked so frail and pale. but the good news is he is eating better. He will have a Pet on the 19th to see if there is any cancer any where else. It was good to put my arms around him and give him a big hug I didn't want to let go!

Kind of funny story, When we left porland to drive to see my dad ( about a 5 hour drive) we ran into rain, snow, sleet and hail the traffic was crazy and it was raining so hard I couldn't see, it was dark out and I thought i was getting night blindness. we passed a trucker and he put his lights off and on for me to let me know I could get back over in the lane, I told DH he must be new and not cranky like the old truckers they don't do that anymore. So we are driving along and Im in a panic because I can't see and DH says Honey are your lights on? I checked and they weren't! I had been driving in the bad weather at night with my lights off I can't believe how lucky we were that no one hit us. We have the type car that the lights go on automatically when you drive it, but when we went to the hospital we did valet parking and he must of turned the lights off. Uggh!

I rambled enough and need to go to bed. hugs to everyone!

Eric - Read a story on Yahoo this am about workers in the "surge capacity force" being housed on a former Navy cargo vessel in NY Harbor.  Bunk in old Navy ship or "heated tents and cots", thank you for being there for those residents.

(((((Debbie)))))). I am glad you made it to your Dad's in one piece! I HATE driving in bad weather. Hope you have some time to relax. Thinking of you, your DH and Dad. Your cup is certainly full.

Seaside, your trip sounds great. Vacations are wonderful!

Eric, take care. I am sure you are homesick, but I hope you get to enjoy the big apple. I am going Dec. 1. How are things there? Does it seem like it's business as usual for most people? I agree they are lucky to have you and your fellow volunteers.

Michelle, your meals sound wonderful. I am with Moon, I wish I lived closer, but then again, I could not keep up with what everyone is making. Lacey, your seafood linguine sounds fantastic.

Laurie, hope you get out of your funk. I am still in a bit of one. We leave for Paris and London on Friday. I think partly I am nervous of getting everything set so we can go. Just heated up Mickey Mouse chicken nuggets for my DD last night, and I had a bagel and some junk. DH had to work overnight so he wasn't home. DS made himself a frozen pizza. And I have all these wonderful veggies from the CSA just sitting in my refrigerator. Gotta shake myself up I guess.

    Enjoy the day everyone!

Hi Deb and Laurie  Glad you are back.

Debbie Didnt know you were travelling.  I hope all works out with your husband, thats some scary stuff and sorry you are now attached to the oxygen.  My lights are like that in my car also, and have found myself going down the road without them on.  i always leave them on auto but when my DH drives my car he cant resist playing with everything and usually has them all screwed up

Welcome Wren44 and LeeA.  Last night was salad again for me and DH.  Guess i am just in a salad mood.  Used a red onion chopped up and usually love it but it was so strong I had to remove it part way through, never had one that strong!

About the Buffalo Wild Wings  My son loves that place...I think they have a contest about eating the hottest wings and you get a free t-shirt and he did it...loves them hot.

Last night I made a complete failure. I had this idea in my head, but on the plate it didn't sing. I was at a client office until 5, and was confronted by the alien-looking romanesco. Oh, and for some reason I didn't want pasta. So I sauteed some chicken but was too lazy to pound it. Then sauteed the blanched romanesco in the same pan. Added some garlic and red pepper flakes, wine, lemon juice and water. Served with a few potatoes. Haven't had a fail this big in a long time. The romanesco was too bitter. The chicken was mealy. The sauce never really came together into a cohesive mass. Of course we ate it. It wasn't inedible; it just wasn't any good.

Have no idea what I will make tonight. I am working from home today, so I should be able to come up with something that I can make with more care.

Romanesco looks like alien food. I am not giving up on it. Maybe we didn't eat it soon enough.
