So...whats for dinner?

Laurie, I also hope, you can get some to wrap gifts, unassisted! I agree with Michelle, that even if you have to pare down, you have provided some very nice holiday events for your boys already!
I actually went to the mall today....my only shopping trip of this season....only got there b/c I was picking up some borrowed baby paraphernalia for the upcoming visit, and that friend lived really close to the mall. It worked out well, since I was able to get DH a gift that I had totally forgotten he asked for. Whew! I will not be rushing back anytime soon...hope there are no returns.
When I got home I learned from my DS2 that he arranged for his company's charitable fund to donate a nice large sum of $$$ to Breast Cancer.org. He had asked me for suggestions of non-profits that I thought would benefit, since he has been on this committee for a couple of years now and he was running out of new ideas of orgs that he knows well. So he pitched it to me and I offered him some ideas with this great org being at the top of the list. Always happy to see big business being socially responsible.
Meanwhile, DS1 and DDIL let us know this week about a death in her extended family. We will all be going to the funeral services in RI on Fri and Sat, then they will be coming up for a few days from there. This is an especially tough week for families to experience a loss....for so many reasons.
I am a bit crazed about prep for the "meet the baby" open house we're having on Sunday given that a lot more people are planning to come than I had guessed would. I'm sure it will all work out. Off to the food store.....0 -
Oh Laurie sorry on the toe...we dont realize how important those toes are until we hurt one...and boy does it hurt!!
Michelle Hopefully no progression found in those scans positive thoughts Glad you got the cleaning all figured out and they found a match. One month is a long time to go between cleanings....the dust from the heat being on and the hair from the dog, I have to dust and vacuum every week here.
Forgot the nachos for the taco salad, had to call hubby to pick them up....oh if I only had a brain!

As if fighting breast cancer wasn't enough, I'm now fighting for a healthy workplace. How can someone bully a cancer survivor! Unbelievable, but it's true! Stress is the last thing that I need.
Please help pass this the Healthy Workplace bill in Maryland: http://www.change.org/petitions/maryland-state-legislators-pass-the-anti-bullying-healthy-workplace-bill

Carrie- Now I want a taco salad.
Deb- too funny- I love it!
Lacey- Your welcome to baby party will be great despite what you have to go through to get there. So sorry about the passing of your family member.
Tomorrow I do the grocery shopping trip for Christmas...I wonder how much I will forget? Dh took a half hour drive tonight to go get a must have present for DS #2, so psyched we found it!
I'm pooped and ready to head to bed with my book. I think we will all rest in January?
0 -
Lacey - so sorry to hear of a death in your extended family. There's never a good time, but it's so hard this time of year.
I'm sure your party will be fantastic, despite all the work involved.
Deb - that is such a cute picture! Where do you find this stuff?
I'm heading out to do a little shopping today and stopping at a wig shop. Still not happy with the one I just bought, but at least it was relatively inexpensive. I want something a little longer and a little curly - my neck gets cold...lol. And I'm going by myself, going to get the one that pleases me. Hopefully, this shop is big enough to carry the size that fits me. The last one I got is already too big - either it has stretched or my scalp has shrunk!
We're going to dinner with my son and his SO tonight. Not sure where yet. Might be time for some Italian. We'll see what they feel like eating.

Dodging snowflakes to travel to the city for our casino overnight today. I'm glad the world is due to end tomorrow and not today. I'm due for a prime rib dinner this evening with a piece of red velvet cake for dessert that I don't want to miss.
Anybody else have special meal plans for today, our last day together ;-)0 -
Auntie, prime rib sounds so good! I'm a carnivore.
Cooked carrots and fingerling sweet potatoes as sides last night. The carrots were small, from the CSA. Left them them whole. Steamed in a saute pan in chicken broth until about cooked. Added 1 T butter and about a T. of splenda brown sugar for a delicious glaze. The fingerling sweet potatoes I quartered and put on a baking sheet. Splashed EVOO and S & P and roasted in a 450 degrees oven for about 30 min., stirring once. There was (is) more thick slices of beef roast left so I warmed 2 serving portions (2 slices for dh and 1 for me) with a balsamic glazing sauce.
Yesterday's big bag of CSA veggies is sitting in the kitchen. More carrots, a big round cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, more fingerling sweet potatoes, meyer lemons, black kale and salad greens. Next Wed. is the last week of this session. Will probably turn on the big refrigerator in the 5th wheel rv for the overflow of veggies. Planned to turn it on for Christmas anyway. I don't have room in my refrig. for dishes cooked ahead of time.
A front came through last night bringing some rain and wind, but I slept through it. We're supposed to have a couple of days of colder temps then warming up again to 70 degrees for Christmas day. So the fireplace won't be in use. I'll put some poinsettias on the hearth. We're hosting the family dinner.
Michelle, fingers crossed that your scan reveals good news. Lacey, I'm expecting your open house to be a big success. Deb, enjoyed your pic with the ornaments. Greetings to everyone. Hope things are going well with holiday preparations.

Lol Nancy!! DH and I were thinking about going out to dinner on Sunday as kind of a 'calm before the chaos' kind of thing.... Maybe we should go tonight instead.
0 -
auntienance that sounds like the perfect end of the world dinner and fun at the casino.
Michelle Definitely get what you like, your the one that has to wear it...and I agree on the cold neck thing.
Daughter from NYC ordered Omaha Steaks for her Dad for Christmas and had them delivered here to the house. I wrapped them in Christmas paper and put in the freezer. She says "don't let Dad see them or he will know what they are" Ha ha like he ever looks in the freezer.
Hmmmm now I've gotta come up with an end of the world dinner

So here is the email exchange between my oncologist and me today:
Me: had the scan earlier this afternoon. I have a copy of the CD - looks like I
lit it up like a Christmas tree. I guess I'm not entirely surprised with the
27.29 results. Sure hope the carboplatin performs some magic!Dr. Walsh: Just looked at the scan. Ugh! Hopefully Carbo will be the Grinch to your unwelcome Christmas tree. See you next week.
I guess that says it all. At least she has a sense of humor!
Got the new wig today and the folks were fantastic. They processed all the paperwork so it will be an insurance claim and I left there without having to cough up a dime. It's a little darker but it has that "razor-cut" look. And bless their hearts, they know how to fix the wigs I have so they will fit better. They can actually take a couple rows of hair and webbing out of the cap! Who knew? They had more than 300 wigs in stock! I could have gotten a free one from the ACS supply that they had, but nothing floated my boat.

Michelle Not quite sure what those texts mean, did they see more, less, or the same? More areas? or same areas only larger? Carboplatin was in my cocktail during my treatment and I am praying that it is the miracle drug that is required to put all those lights out! Hopefully when you see her she can give you some specifics as to what is being seen. Do you see her before or after Christmas? Love your choice on the wig and glad they can fix your other ones. Hang in there...think of you every day.
0 -
Michelle, I strongly second your dr.'s hope that your treatment douses those Christmas lights.
DH took advantage of my absence this afternoon and baked dozens and dozens of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. This is an annual Christmas ritual with him. We'll bag up cookies for the neighbors and have cookies left for Christmas day. Now if I can just resist eating them.
My mother wasn't feeling well enough for me to take her to have her hair done today so I cooked some chicken pasta soup and took to her. I had a bowl with her and it was pretty good.

Michelle, I see why you like your onc so much. She gets it. You get it. Her response was just about perfect.
The drugs for this new disease they say I have are making me feel like crap. I wake more tired than when I went to bed. Worked with three different clients today. Everyone wants so much before the end of my work day today. I still have at least three hours of work tonight. I guess I looked as bad as I feel since husband announced that we were eating out tonight. I had a bowl of Pho, the ultimate comfort food.
Now I have to figure out Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas brunch. And find stocking gifts. And make cookies.

Michelle, your onc is probably so glad to have such a well-informed patient who can maintain her own sense of humor, at a serious time.
Susan, you are really doing a lot for someone who is going through energy draining treatment. Any way you can cut back on the holiday food prep expectations?
DH helped me (a lot!) wrap gifts today since we needed to get the place cleared out a bit....for the housecleaner...and for Daryan, the tornado, who arrives tomorrow night, a day early due to funeral arrangements which DS1 and DDIL will attend Saturday while we babysit him. Talk about feeling like we need our ducks lined up! At least with some non-rainy weather on Sat we can spend active time outdoors. I had asked DDIL about any of his favorite toys she was going to bring, and she said that " he really doesn't need anything since when he goes to new places he just gets involved with everything that is there. LOL! DH and I looked around and roared! So I kept several gifts unwrapped to keep his attention on those. We'll see if we need to dismantle everything on our many shelves before he does. Kid proofing has been so long ago for us...0 -
Thinking of you Michelle and 3rd your onc.
Hugs to all xxx

Michelle - Is that you Jane?? It does look like a cute wig, you say only a little darker. Great they can modify your others. Here's hoping for kicking the c*** out of those lit up lights.
Susan - I made white chicken chili for a party last week. It's not gourmet but it went down GOOD. Off of Cooks.com. I vote for Mexican food. But I second Lacey who says can't you beg off of some of the heavy duty cooking. DB sent us a honey baked ham so guess what we're having??? DD is coming out BUT (and that's a big one) weather is talking tiniest chance of snow. She won't come if any chance. So no thawing of that frozen baby till I know for sure. DH and I couldn't begin to eat it and probably not even close with the 3 of us.

Carrie - more, much more. And some of the same areas are bigger. Not a pretty scene at all!

Oh ((((Michelle))))) ...not what anyone wanted to hear I hope your new plan zaps those buggers to hell. I am so happy though that the new wig place was great and I love the pic of the new wig style- not to mention they can fix your other gorgeous one to fit you!
Lacey- You are in for a whirl wind!! Break out the pots and pans and spoons! It will be wonderful and slightly nerve racking as you watch him discover the things you hadn't thought of! I am going nuts with my Christmas decorations and my 3 year old- it is all one big breakable toy!
Carol- Hope your Mom feels better.
Today was the most annoying day. Kids were off the walls and not listening. Did the Christmas grocery shopping (we do bar food not a sit down meal). And stopped to get one more present. With out boring everyone basically everything I did today took 10 times longer than it should or broke. DH had a bad day too and got home just as I was tucking the boys in at 7- if I had kept them up till 8 I might have lost it! Then the poor guy headed out Christmas shopping after eating a big plate of spaghetti and meatballs I had made.
Tomorrow is the day for me to finish my shopping and try to wrap. DS#1 has a preschool Christmas pageant in the morning which is a first for all of us- super excited for him and to watch it!!
Hugs to everyone.

Michelle. I, too, hope the carbo kicks cancer's ass. ((HUGS))

luvrving - hope the Carboplatin does its thing - we all are hoping for that!
DS missed his flight this morning in Baltimore - had worked in the ER all night - but made the next non-stop before all the cancellations caused a travel mess. I always sleep better when all my chicks are in the nest. Had my port flushed at the MO and my post-op with the PS, after the airport run. I made caramel corn with smoked almonds last night for the docs and their respective staff. Still have an iffy tummy so I skipped the chicken enchiladas, cheesy spanish rice, and black beans that everyone had for dinner tonight. Just tried some toast and think I am going to go to bed. Hope everyone has a pleasant night and that we are all still here tomorrow night, lol!

(((((Michelle)))))) I am so sorry. Also hoping the carboplatin is a big, mean grinch. I really hate this f}#%*ng disease. Not fair at all. I am always thinking of you and sending you positive thoughts.
Debbie and Apple, hoping things are good with you too.
Laurie, enjoy the pageant! I really miss those days.0 -
Michelle, hoping Carboplatin turns out to be what you need to turn off the ugly lights. I am glad they can fix the other wigs too. It's nice when they take the time to help you.
To all, I love you all dearly, but we all talk just too darn much! LOL
Weather is crappy, even though we didn't get a lot of snow, only about 6inches, its wet and heavy stuff. The wind is blowing horribly. Everyone stay warm and dry and if you have to drive, be careful.
Much love to all.0 -
Well I am grateful that it is rain here instead of snow, but geez that's a lot of rain.
Had a Christmas lunch in work yesterday. They got sausage, peppers and onions (we're good), meatballs (I am a meatball snob, I only like mine, they were yucky), and baked ziti. Then everyone brought something, there are only 30 people there. I brought fruit salad, there was a good pasta salad and seafood salad, and some pretty easy dips. There was some home made cookies and one home made pie. Other than that surprisingly, everything was store bought. They were good, there were cannoli, cake, cupcakes, soft pretzels, egg nog, sodas and carrot cake. It says something about all of our hectic lives I think. Hoping to make some home made cookies tomorrow. My DD is 15, and I want her to remember always making them for Christmas.0 -
Woke up this morning and we're all still here...yippee! LOL!

Thank you all for your ideas about scaling back Christmas, but that isn't going to happen this year. We are a small group this year so I have to take individual tastes into consideration. The white bean chili for example could not be eaten by at least three people. I would be more likely to get really good Chinese take out! But that isn't happening. I have dropped the soup, and the ravioli starter already. The dessert is being outsourced to my daughter. [That girl has a way with sugar and butter.]
If I don't feel better on the 26th, I will call my endo and tough it out before then.
Tonight my husband and I will decorate the tree and wrap the presents together. I am making some pizzas. We will have a fire going in the fireplace and some Christmas music playing. We both felt that we needed to reserve some time together and try to get into what is called the "Christmas spirit." I have decided that as of today, I am on vacation. My clients have all been taken care of, and I need to take care of myself for a few days.

Susan, good plan to take some days off and look after yourself. Hope you feel good enough to enjoy Christmas.
Lacey, enjoy your dynamo grandson. I can enjoy a small child for about 2 hrs. and then I'm exhausted. Hats off to parents, especially great parents like Laurie and her dh.
Whitehouse soup of the day is shrimp and corn chowder. Wish I could drop in for a bowl!
One task this morning is bagging up cookies for the neighbors.
Stay warm!

Forgot to respond to SpecialK. Sure hope your appetite improves so that you can enjoy the Christmas food with your family.

carole - that was sweet - I hope the tummy improves too, so far today still bad. My DH miscalculated dates and put us in two places at once on Sunday, so we just moved up the visit with in-laws to tomorrow instead. Today will be all the baking I was going to do tomorrow! Lemon cake, Kahlua cake with chocolate drizzle and crushed peppermints on top, Andes Candies cookies and peanut brittle. I have all their gifts wrapped but I decided (why?) to make a game for my neice - she is 7 and this is a dice game with chips that have numbers on them and you make combinations of chips to equal what you roll on the dice. Thought it would be cute to make little wooden dolphins for the chips - so I am painting them now. You can carry all the parts in a little pouch so it is good for travel. I played it on the plane coming home from my last vaccine trial visit.

(((Michelle))), that's a pretty crappy Christmas present! Really hoping your new TX does the job.
Well, the casino outing wasn't the money making venture I'd hoped for, but the meal was outstanding. I managed to snag some lamb shanks so dinner is Julia child's lamb shanks and white beans. Can't wait!0
