So...whats for dinner?

I'm also hoping Carboplatin is the magic bullet.
Lacey, sorry to hear about the death in your DIL's extended family.
I have to find a way to get the plot plans for this house, I will propably have to make a trip into Lowell.
I had them in my hand a few months ago, now do you think I can find them, NOOOOOOOOOOOO. I hve been looking in every draw, nook and cranny of the house, driving me crazy. Lawyer wants them to pass papers.
I wonder if I can get them online? Anyone have any ideas???
0 -
You put them in your other purse.
They are in your coat or pants or other pocket
You put them someplace "safe" like your glove compartment
Your husband has them
Your mortgage company has them and can fax them to your lawyer?
0 -
Or the title company you used when you bought the house? I would say it's highly unlikely you can get them online.
And thanks, Deb!
Nancy - I like the Danish idea using the crescent rolls. "Semi-homemade"...I think there's a tv program on the Food Network with that name.
My pork roast is smelling yummy!

Swap out the crescent rolls for puff pastry. Increase the decadence, calorites, and puffiness.
We have had to have a new survey of our "plot" every single time we refinance the house. This lot was created in 1897, What do they think happened to it? Silly, but someone makes money for sure.

That's a good idea Susan, and that's something I always have on hand.

To all, may you enjoy the coming holidays without any guilt for what you can't do, and a few quiet days to recover, and a couple of BC free memories. Much love.

Lucky you, Eric, to be gifted all that cast iron! I cooked cornbread today in my seasoned iron skillet. My mother had a wonderful deep skillet that she used like a dutch oven. I so regret not hanging on to it. She gave it to somebody in the family.
Seaside, your Christmas dinner menu makes my mouth water. I love prime rib roast. My MIL used to make Yorkshire pudding.
Tomorrow will be a busy day for me with food preparation for the Christmas meal. I wish I could do all the side dishes a day ahead and warm them up but a couple of dishes need to be put together Christmas morning. On holidays I wish I had about three ovens.
Tomorrow night dh and I will walk next to a neighbor's annual open house. That's all we do on Christmas Eve.

@deborye, if by plot plan you mean the plan showing boundaries of your lot with the length of each etc, you might try looking in the website of the property tax assessor and/or recorder's office for your county. You may be able to download a copy of the original plat (i.e. when the land was originally broken down into separate lots) or of a quarter section map which would likely show the same information. If you have ever had the corners of the property laid out by a surveyor, there may even be a record of that exact survey on file.
I am going to try making something for dinner I've never done before: braised winter vegetables. I have some cabbage, carrots and oninos, and today on the way home from church I bought a parsnip (I've never had one of those before that I can recall), a can of chicken broth and some chanterelle mushrooms. (I only bought just a few--they're wild picked, so veeerrry expensive!)
I'm going to cook a strip of bacon, then saute the veggies, the chanterelles and some regular mushrooms and herbs already on hand, in the bacon fat, then add the stock and simmer until the veggies are done. If I time it right I will end up with tender savory veggies and the stock reduced to a thick sauce. That's a side dish to go with turkey burgers (made just like hamburgers but with ground turkey instead of beef) and maybe a little pasta.

Carole, I absolutely love Yorkshire pudding, but can't seem to make it without smoking up the house :-(
Hot ham and cheese sandwiches and turkey noodle soup (finally dug the turkey carcasses out of the freezer.)0 -
Yes, the boundaries of the land, I had it, put it in a folder, now I can't find it. I have been searching on line, my parents bought this house in August of 1955. I have the book and page number but I'm not coming up with anything. There is a plot plan in writing say Northwesterly, Southeasterly blah blah blah, but i don't think that is what the lawyer wants. Expecting a call from him tomorrow. This is driving me bonkers and stressing me out. I know this sound weird but when I get stressed out, the left tata that had cellulitis gets pink and feels warm inside.

Been sick today; running a temp of 101.9 and feeling like dog meat. This morning I tested a new way to do baked eggs, and then ate the one test egg. Husband was all on his own for lunch. Made some beef broth soup for dinner with Greek noodles. Still need to make some brioche tonight since it must sit for 24hours in the fridge. Wish I felt better and hadn't promised cinnamon buns for Christmas breakfast.
Husband has offered [been told] that he gets to iron the linens. Next year I need to send them out and have them professionally cleaned and ironed. We are getting too old for this stuff.

Susan, call yer doctor in the morning or on call doc tonight. That temp is too high, OK? You come first. Ever hear those flight attendants say, "put the oxygen on yourself first or you won't be able to help anyone?" OK. I'll shut up.

Susan - I agree with Bedo, time for some help from your doc. Sure hope it's not the flu, apparently this area is having a widespread outbreak. Not that there's ever a good time, but this is horrible timing! Take good care of yourself!
Curveball - I cooked parsnips for the first time on Thanksgiving. They didn't come out that great (were still tough) but I think that was operator error. I should have paid more attention to cutting the pieces all the same size. When we were kids, we had them for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, but they were boiled to death and I didn't care for them.
Everyone just left - the pork loin was really good and well, there's no accounting for taste - they just love the boxed au gratin potatoes. I may make it my mission to find a recipe that tastes better...I used to make scalloped potatoes from scratch but there's no cheese in them. I think potatoes dauphine might be close.

Susan, please call. When I was going through chemo I messed around with a 101 degree temp and ended up in the er for fluids.

Susan, I'll add my voice to the chorus. Hopefully you have called already. If not, call now.

Carole,
I agree on wishing all the sides could be done ahead... We are doing way more ahead than normal but there really are some things that just have to be done the day of.... We've been working our butts off the past couple of days... Here's hoping it's smooth sailing from here.... I'm tired already...lol!
Michelle,
Thanks for the holiday wishes! Lol on the boxed potatoes being a hit... Sometimes it's not necessarily what is the best dish but more what they are used to! Just added your Waldorf Salad to our Christmas Day menu.. Thought we could use something a bit lighter and sweeter to balance the heavy meat and potatoes.... I know what I'll be loading on my plate.
Nancy,
That danish sounds really good and easy.... I've saved your recipe to make soon... Maybe New Years day.....
Susan,
I hope you feel better soon!0 -
Allright, Susan, more unsolicited advice...ditto on making sure you call the doc. On a much less serious note,DH has developed this "violently loud" night cough since his last URI, requiring him to sleep (in short spurts) in the family room far away from the ears of the other five people currently in this house. I finally convinced him to stop unsuccessfully self-administering over the counter meds, and he emailed the doc. I was hopeful until he received the automated "out of office" response and wouldn't call the covering doc. Back to the family room last night. So tonight he's gotten DS1's advice on yet another over the counter product. OY!
We are having quite a time with little DGS alias, tornado boy. Lord I envy his energy! We babysat for him yesterday while his parents attended the funeral services in RI....basically the whole day, and we were wiped out by noon. Fortunately he takes good naps, and if I weren't readying for the open house I would have done that too! One little active two year old can certainly humble his 60 something grandparents in their house, and is great at unearthing potentially dangerous or mess creating items that we experience as wallpaper! I know I am telling you nothing new, Laurie. The good news is that he is pretty respectful of our limits for cabinet invasions, and xmas tree ornament grabbing. That said, he was getting way more comfortable "testing" tonight.
The open house was delightful....but remind me to never plan such an event while having family with babies staying with us over a Christmas weekend! I am really exhausted.......but really pleased that everyone appeared to have a great time and enjoyed meeting our new DGD. She's a sweetie. We had plenty of varied food and libations for our guests. One popular appetizer was the smashed pea/ ricotta crostini with mint. I may repeat it for the appetizer I bring to our friends' home for Xmas day.
On the fence about what to make for tomorrow night's dinner. Honestly, I'd like to stay out of the kitchen after cooking so much these past few weeks. I want time to be with the babies. Tomorrow we are going to take them to the Children's Museum and visit DS2's bachelor pad in Southie. Maybe we can stop at a restaurant there late enough in the day that we will only have to snack here for dinner. Lots of leftovers in the fridge......;)
Sweet gift from your mom, Eric.
Deb, your town hall or registry of deeds should have that document....but usually the bank that holds the mortgage has one. Sorry you have that stress during the holiday.:(
Have a very happy Christmas Eve and Day everyone....:)0 -
Happy Christmas Eve everyone!
Had my white elephant gift exchange party yesterday for about 25. I was lazy and got food from the caterer...chicken marsala and picatta and then added mashed potatoes (healthy choice from a box...can't tell from homemade) green beans amondine and a salad with garlic rolls. With all the appetizers, it was more than enough for everyone! The hit was the green beans amondine. I used the tiny green beans, blanched them the night before where they were just crisp tender, then before serving, I melted butter, toasted the almonds, and poured it over the green beans. Not a one left!
The fun was watching my two little DGD's play together and enjoy their toys so much...even if they did fight over them occasionally! It's so great to have little ones around during the holidays...they are such a joy!
Enjoy your festivities everyone!

Susan Better to talk with a Dr. today then to get really sick on Christmas Day and not be able to get ahold of anyone. Hope it all gets resolved and you feel better.
Lacey that is what we are seeing in this neck of the woods....people getting the usual cold but with a harsh cough that seems to linger for a long time. Hope he feels better soon.
Hot danish and coffee to start off our Christmas morning while we open gifts...thanks Nance!!
Having our children home, ages 26 and 23, and hearing them laugh and giggle while playing video games is like listening to them when they were little....I am so blessed.
Merry Christmas everyone and Wishes for a health New Year for everyone!!!

My son made it in from Toronto late last evening, so the family will be complete for a few days. I am blessed to have such a wonderful, caring group of children and grandchildren. And a loving husband who has been and continues to be my rock.
I'm not taking my laptop with us to DD's this evening, so this will be my last post until after we get home tomorrow night. I hope everyone has a wondrous Christmas filled with family, food, fun and love.
Merry Christmas, one and all!

Merry Christmas my friends. I wish I could share a cup of coffee or a meal with every one of you. Thank you for sharing your lives and menus with me this year. May your Christmas be everything you want it to be.

the braised vegetables were a partial success. The bacon had spoiled, so I had to leave it out, and the canned chicken broth was very bland. But it was enough to tell the idea is worth trying again, with the bacon and homemade chicken stock. I put herbs and things in as well as celery and carrot, so it has much more flavor than the canned broth did. I ended up using less than 1/4 of the can of broth, so today I'm going to add a little water and chicken boullion, some leftover rice pilaf that needs to be eaten up, and some vegetables, to make soup for lunch. My mom said she would have liked the chanterelles in bigger pieces, so you got more of a mouthful of flavor. I had chopped them coarsely to spread their flavor throughout the dish. So maybe I will buy some dried ones, and then I can have relatively large pieces of mushroom, and add the soaking water to the pan to flavor the whole dish. They really are delicious! We went to Thanksgiving dinner at a friend's house--she made a delicious mix of brussel sprouts, chanterelles and some sort of little round nut, maybe hazelnuts, and estimating from what I saw in the kitchen during prep, there was more than a quart of chanterelles in it. She's a chef and I am guessing she must know a mushroom hunter who picked them for her as a favor or swapping for future culinary services, because otherwise there were several hundred dollars' worth of just mushrooms in that one menu item. I peeled the parsnip, cut it in slices about 1/4" thick, and simmered for about 15 or 20 minutes IIRC. The parsnip was cooked tender, but the cabbage was sitting on top of the other vegetables and got more steamed than simmered. It could have used a few more minutes. I'd like to try growing some of those baby cabbages to use in this dish. A softball-sized cabbage cut in quarters would be a good serving size (along with the other ingredients) and it would have a little bit of the core down the middle to keep it from falling apart during cooking.
Then I might do a little pre-prep for Christmas dinner. It's just my mother and me this year, so instead of a turkey, I'm doing Cornish hens, stuffed with a rice mixture with some dried apricots and raisins. I found an enormous artichoke at the store yesterday, so we're going to split that, with some lemon-parsely-butter to dip the leaves in, and a blueberry pie for dessert. The stuffing can be made ahead, and maybe I'll also do the piecrust, up until the point where the water is added.

Susan- I hope you are feeling better and as everyone else has said- I hope you called the Dr.
Lacey- Hope your DH gets rid of the cough soon. But I agree with Carrie, the cough part of the cold that is going around lingers. I have been coughing for 6 weeks- but it gets a little less frequent and better each day. So glad the open house went great and that you had a blast with your grandson. It is true, trying to clean and prep with a tornado amongst you is very hard!
Michelle- Yay for having the whole family together! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas!
Carrie- Your post of your kids coming back early to be home made me smile- I am sure you will all enjoy the family time.
I'm sorry I don't have time to post to everyone but I hope you all know that I wish you all a wonderful Holiday with your families! May you all be blessed with good health!
I am just about ready for Christmas. Despite starting off way behind I caught up! As of Friday night I was 100% bought and wrapped. I did a bunch of the cooking and food prep over the weekend so I won't have a lot to do on Christmas. We do a big breakfast Christmas morning and I started my gorton this morning at 7. Another hour and it should be done. Tomorrow we are going to cook a simple ham and some cheese and rice, because DH really wants it. We will have a Mexican appetizer in a crescent ring, buffalo chicken dip, quiche, shrimp, Swedish meatballs, dips breads etc. We usually travel to our friends on Christmas Eve and have decided not to this year. DH still has to make his chili and we don't want to be up really late doing it like we usually are. For the moment the house is clean- from top to bottom. But I don't know how long that will last. As I have been typing my 3 year old just came in and dumped milk all over the floor I just washed...sigh...But they are being really helpful and trying not to trash the place too badly.
This afternoon we will make chocolate chip cookies for Santa and sprinkle reindeer food on the lawn before dark. The kids are REALLY excited and my 5 year old has been tracking Santa all day on the Norad tracker. My youngest is wearing his Santa hat and singing jingle bells over and over The whole thing is pretty funny!
I wish all of you lots of love and happiness- Merry Christmas!!

Going over my Aunt and Uncle's for Christmas dinner. I am going to make an Apple Pie and Peas with pearl onions.
My parents paid off the house in 1985 so there is no mortgage. DH will have to call the lawyer and find out what to do.

Deb- Check with the town hall- they should have a copy of the deed to the property with the description of lot lines etc.
0 -
In Arizona, it's the County Recorder's office that has copies of property maps. In other places, a court will perform the function of recording copies of contracts, wills, deeds of trust, deeds of sale and so forth.
Probably the best place to start would be the name of the agency on the "Pay to" line of the check that you sent in to pay your property taxes.
And after all of that, Merry Christmas.
DD is already begging me for a taste of the cheese-cake that I've already made and wants me to make an early cemicuken (still not sure if that's spelled right).

We got back late tonight and to tired to read all the post but hope everyone is doing well. I will read them in the morning
