So...whats for dinner?

To everyone who has had a loss, when my Mom died I felt a physical pain that was so strong it was overpowering. I thought that surely the strength of it would make God let her come back to me. But it didn't happen. I still think of her and her and her unconditional love gave me whatever is good in me.
The physical pain did pass with time.
Bad dog. Poo'd Beside the kitty litter box in the bathroom when I wasn't looking. D-! A+ for Effort. She shall be crated while I'm at work. She seems to like it in there.
Bad dog and I just went for a walk in the rain. Good doggie.
Tonight I am having frozen mussles in butter and garlic sauce over whole wheat pasta.
Bobo, don't you remember having to practice before homework? Dodo plays in NY on Broadway in the pit and Subs in NY Ballet and orchestra sometimes. Played in either Batchelor or Batchelorette in the scene where they seronade the couple. He "long blond hair" covered her face so you couldn't see her face. rolling eyes. Friggin show off/ over achiever/ little goody 2 shoes. You were really good too. Both of you were too good. I was too tired from meeting boys at the bridge at 2:00am hence, the slacker instrument. I've never been paid a cent to play. I played from 4th to 1st year in college. A riddle for you all...hint viola players are known to be lazy slackers who don't push themselver to perform well. They usually only play harmony.
"Why do violists get antsy when they see the Kama Sutra?
Answer; All those positions! ( 1st position is the easiest and most basic, in violin and viola, if you get better, you learn more positions)
Anyway, I'm going to try to start eating oatmeal.
Debbie, my heart goes out to you. I think of you often.

bedo:
Q: Why is viola better then violin?
A: Violas burn longer! (joke from seventh grade uppity violin students)
Loved the naughty puppy story as usual. I played in the pit!! I'm afraid you have two bad sisters on your hands, I don't know what you are going to do. You will be overwhelmed.
Personally, I am overwhelmed by how good everyone's food looks!
Carole, what kind of cake? Let me come to your WW meeting -- I will rock punk eyeliner and people will leave you alone.
Special K -- what did you make for your BCO luncheon? Can't wait to hear menu.
Nancy: did you put zest in the pasta? Did you add lemon at the end -- without really heating it? That's what I do when I want things really lemony. But lately I don't. I wish you were here making pasta and covered in flour!
Laurie -- your eggplant ended up sounding yummy. And I can totally see that face. I loved that story.
Carberry: I watched the Bachelor too! Although -- who would want him? He is obviously not a good kisser.
Lacey -- was it you with the frozen kale? Are you going to saute it with a lot of garlic and olive oil? I don't like frozen kale in smoothies -- but some prefer it frozen. You sound like an excellent cook. I love parsnips. I love turnips even more.
Hello to everyone! Dinner tonight: no idea. I should not even be allowed to post here.

My cake was very tall, four layers of chocolate cake, two layers of chocolate mousse, dark fudge layer on the bottom, a thin shell of dark chocolate over all. Because of the dark chocolate shell, the cake was pre-sliced. I have a picture on my phone. I'll try posting it. Then you'll know my real first name!
You're right, Nancy! Red beans and rice on Monday in New Orleans. What a coincidence. I took a package of cooked red beans out of the freezer for dinner and also a package of cooked brown rice. I had a substantial lunch of delicious fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans and salad. I passed on a yummy looking big slice of chocolate cake for dessert and also resisted the garlic bread stick. I played a women's golf event and won! My name will be engraved on a trophy. Well, not actually a trophy but a silver platter. DH did not have this big lunch so I'm fixing a make-shift meal for him.
So far my pasta making is all in the realm of the imagination. Today I received a book on making artisanal pasta. Looking forward to reading it.
Bobo, I do hope the children have some food for dinner.
Bedo, your other sister sounds like a very successful musician. But then you're probably the CEO of your company. Come on, fess up!

It is awful sad loosing a parent, I lost my Dad June 13th 2012. Tomorrow it will be 9 months, I could hear my Mom yelling at him, "Bob, what took you so long, I waited for you for 16 years. She died from BC May 31, 1996. The good thing is I bought thier house, the house I was brought up in and my Mom died in this very room I am in now and it feels right.

Carole! Congrats on your trophy!!! Please send picture of you holding your trophy. I really need it.
And of course the children had supper! Leftover veg chicken and dumplings, salad with grated apple and lemon dressing, and steamed roasted BBQ pork buns. And and ice cream sandwich. So far I have had one beer and one piece of watermelon. It seems like a progressive dinner for me tonight.
Carole, I did not know you were using an alias... I know people post anonymously on this site, obviously, but I thought you were so cool and fearless and fantastic that you were just using your own name! You are still all those things, though, and you are zipping around winning golf competitions. Your cake sounds great. I would have definitely had it for breakfast.
Deborah, I am so sorry to hear about your mother. Hugs to you.

Congratulations Carole, that's awesome!
bedo, yes I did add zest at the end. Meyer lemons are not as lemony because they are a cross (Mandarin orange and lemon I think) and slightly sweeter. Won't do that again.
My sil texted me that she tried a new pasta recipe that used toasted flour. She said it was the best she ever had. Can't wait to try that one.0 -
Carol, can never reveal what I do for a living. I would have to shoot you, and I am too fond of you to do that.
0 -
Bobo- How do you make veg chicken and dumplings?
Carol- Congrats on winning at golf YAY! And your cake sounded amazing, I am not a big sweets person, but I would have absolutely had a slice of that cake.
Deb- I bought my childhood home too. Love that I was raised here and am raising my kids in the same place. DS thinks it's awesome that he has my old room.
Bedo- LOL, it seems you work for some sort of corporation....maybe bad dog is your new secretsry and you are using code?

Got a deal on ground beef so we had enchiladas for dinner. DH said they were great. I made my own sauce. My mom used to make enchiladas and we would eat them and watch Bonanza. Wish I had her recipe. As I can recall, she made them even when we lived in Hawaii. Guess she learned to make her own tortillas. Its funny in a sad way the things we wish we had asked our parents. There are a million things I do not know about my mom and how she was raised. Thought I would have all the time in the world but she got sick 10 years ago and died a month later. Miss her so much.
Bobo - I was the one with the frozen kale. There are some recipes out there. I'm a novice to using it. I put some fresh in a knock off Olive Garden soup but the rest went to waste. Maybe I can use up the frozen. Also found some creamed spinach, not Stouffers, in a bag. I'll eat it but NOOO not DH.
Bought 3 tomato plants today. DH wanted to plant them but I said no not quite yet. I think another week or 2. No way to cover them from frost and it was 27 here Wed. morning.
I think it's cool that you Laurie and Deb own your childhood homes. With google earth I have been able to look at all the places we lived. Fascinating. Looked at my house recently and realized they have a new picture from this past summer.

27..wow.... It's almost too late to plant tomatos here. It's supposed to be in the upper 80s here tomorrow. Michelle, you'll be able to swim and warm up at the end of the month.... :-)
While it seems hot, the lack of humidity makes it comfortable. Still, if you're in the sun a lot, it's a bit much.

The condo project is now complete. It was taken to the bare walls - completely new kitchen and 3 baths, new flooring, paint, light fixtures. I took the last of the soft goods today - it looks great, but I am tired.
The BCO luncheon - I used to cater and I have a problem with excess - this will be apparent in a second! I wanted to make sure there was something for everyone. Also, we had been going to the Cheesecake Factory and everyone talked about cheesecake on the thread so I did a few. We had Spinach and Artichoke Dip (Katie Lee Joel's recipe), Red Potato Salad with Sour Cream and Dill Dressing, Greek Orzo and Shrimp Salad, Asian Sesame Noodle Salad, Filet on Garlic Toast with Horseradish Sour Cream Dressing, Mexican Chicken Wraps, gluten-free Ham and Cheese bite-sized quiches, same quiches but Artichoke and Bacon flavored, and a fruit platter. To drink we had white sangria, mimosas, lemonade and green iced tea. For dessert Snickers Cheesecake, Ladyfinger Cheesecake with Cherries, phyllo cups filled with lemon cream cheese and raspberries, and coffee. You all probably think I am a crazy lady!

DH and I also bought a childhood home--his. Lived there until we retired to the beach. One unusual thing about our home purchase, it came to us complete with DH's teenage brother.

Hey you string playing triplets - all I ever did was sing. But my freshman roommate played the chello. She was soooooo dumb. I still cringe whenever I hear The Swan. Best friend played the viola. Sophmore roommate played the violin. And still - all I did was sing. (and then I smoked for 40 years so needless to say I'm no longer a lyric soprano). I was so jealous of those ladies going to friends houses on Sunday afternoons to play string quartets for fun. Rock on!! Going to hear the Appollo Chamber Players for a free noon Lenten concert next week. Managed to hear the Artemis Quartet recently. You are all lucky to be so talented.
Out to Souper Salad (buffet) for lunch with a friend. Gin & tonics for dinner. Pulled pork BBQ tomorrow for lunch with old work-mates. Healthy?? Ah well - every other meal is good, right? I'll have coleslaw with the pork tomorrow.

SpecialK that is an impressive menu...alll those cheesecake deserts! Oh my..you are sooo talented and we wont even mention the condo re-do.
Bobo If you post in the morning, you will know what you had for dinner the night before..haha I think
Minustwo You cant say you "only" sing. If I had to pick a talent, I would like to be able to sing. I only sing in the car when I am alone, so as not to offend anyone.
Eric I know you are just teasing us with that 80 deg weather....and we here in the north wait, and wait, and wait.
So, I bought some sirloin tips and didnt have a clue what to do with them...so marinated the crap outta them, cooked with onions and mushrooms and made cheesesteak sandwiches and french fries

I don't suppose I'll be able to tease much with the June 115F (45C) weather...... :-)

carberry - it was fun and the group of ladies is so great - it was nice to be able to visit at length instead of feeling like we had to leave the restaurant after a couple of hours. My DH was out of town so we just chatted and ate! I am not sure about my talent level, but years of catering have refined my recipes for large groups and I just do it on autopilot! But, thanks for the compliment!

Carrie, we could have had steak tips and noodles! Bet your sandwiches were good, what's not to like there?
Planned to make the Ethiopian soup today, but the recipe calls for fenugreek, which unbelievably, I don't have. It's not the kind of spice you can really substitute for. I'm doubtful that I can find some in my little town so may have to go to the next town 25 miles away to find it. There's a produce shop there that sells a pretty good variety of bulk spices. I don't know why it's called soup, it's really more of a braise using pork ribs.
DH is making me a waffle and bacon for breakfast. Love when he does that!0 -
Nancy- Yum to your breakfast. Very nice of your DH. I wonder if you could buy the spice on line and save yourself the drive?
Carrie- I agree, your dinner sounds like it was good!
Minus two- I think every other meal is a good ratio
Dinner tonight is chicken pot pie, DS1 requested this one. I am fighting this cold off with all I am worth, so far I am winning. Dragging a bit but I keep moving. The boys are giving me a run for my money. DS1 is being super naughty, trying to sneak cookies, lieing about it etc. DS2 tripped this morning and did a face plant on the couch. Somehow when he slid down it pulled his top lip up and ripped the skin where his lip and gum meets...you know that little piece that holds the two together? (yes stick your tongue up there to feel...) he ripped that open and was bleeding all over the place. Every day is an adventure huh?
So it is almost 4:30, close enough to 5. I just poured a glass of wine. Cheers!

Slowly regaining my balance here. This weekend the kid, her partner, and the two of us had a really nice dinner together. The dinner was a simple chicken, chorizo and rice dish; classic one pot meal. What was important was that we were all together and could tell Dan stories and grieve together. The kid made a cake for the wedding on Sunday and helped with the clean up. The partner carried furniture around to help us set up. Sunday was all about finishing the house prep for the wedding. And the cake, of course.
Monday night I made my lentil-vegetable soup and last night was samosa meat with lentils and rice. Lots of lentils for some reason. Tonight I am making an Asian-style soup with pork. Winter is letting go here. Today was sunny and almost warm. If you look closely, some of the bushes are starting to get that very light green at the tips of their branches.
Will try to post a picture of the cake, and maybe one of the dining room all ready to start the wedding event.

DH requested pasta for tonight's dinner. So we'll have Dreamfield's linguini with Sal & Judy's Heart Healthy spaghetti sauce with some Italian sausage added. (To prevent it from being too healthy?) Grated parm-reg. Tossed salad with lemon juice for my dressing. I'm drawing heavily on exercise points for today's WW allotment.
Making a big pot of broccoli cheese soup, America's Test Kitchen recipe. Soup weather will soon be over.

Pretty susan.

carole, I made that soup too, a month or so ago. What did you think of it? *susan*

Just gorgeous Susan!
Well since I wasted most of the day grocery shopping and hunting for fenugreek (which I did find), tonights dinner is hot ham and cheese sandwiches, which I had frozen, and coleslaw. So the Ethiopian stew gets made tomorrow.
Laurie, since the recipe was from the penzey's catalog, the logical thing would have been to order the spice from them. However, I am notoriously unable to delay gratification, especially where food is concerned.0 -
I am banking on this post making it through...my last two self-destructed....Ipad be damned!
Susan, good to hear from you.....Lovely photos...and impressed that "the kid" could make that cake.....genetic pre-disposition obviously.
Laurie, you just never stop having raucous fun up there!! Boys! Hope you can continue to keep that illness at bay.
Carrie....your steak sandwiches sounded so yummy. I could really go for something like that right now!
Skipping dinner since I had a friend over for a late lunch...made a mushroom, spinach, onion, and roasted tomato quiche, served with arugula, cranberry, walnut salad...and the parsnip cake for dessert....sort of a cross between a spice cake and carrot cake. I really enjoyed the ginger cream cheese icing on it. Since DH had a late afternoon meeting,(which will morph into dinner) I figured I could skip eating after so much lunch (except for the chocolate I am now munching on with green tea...the tea erases the chocolate, right?).
Special, I loved your luncheon menu! I actually wrote you that two days ago but it evaporated.
Nance, my friend who was here today makes pasta using her cuisinart for it....are you more authentic in your floury approach? Your meals since you've returned home sound wonderful. I was also going to steer you to Penzeys for the fenugreek.....before learning about your need for immediate gratification. Eager to hear about how that turns out....
I am submitting this before it goes the way of my other recent posts......0 -
Lacey, I use my kitchenaid. I've done it by hand, but if I use the mixer it lets me control the ingredients a little easier.

Susan, I like the soup. This is the 2nd time I've made it.

susan - beautiful photos and the cake looks delish! The "kid" did good!

OOOH - Nancy - I will have to read thru the Penzey's online recipes. They sound good what I glanced thru. I'd be sunk if I ordered the catalog. Used to get King Arthur Flour (back in the day b4 much online) and probably good I don't get it any longer. You'd of thunk that the essential chili store Pendery's here in Ft. Worth would have some good online recipes. NOOO. Had to basically make up my own. Never used a recipe using fenugreek. I wouldn't know where to find it locally except at Pendery's or maybe Central Market. Hope your stew turns out to be everything you are anticipating it to be. I think I found a Penzeys in Arlington. Not close but closer than Dallas or Houston. May need a roadtrip with DD soon.
Susan - the pictures are lovely.
Special K - You win the award for energizer bunny this week. WOW!
Laurie - Glad you're winning the battle of the cold. Mine is slowly fading into the sunset.
Tonight will be leftover enchiladas whenever DH gets home (off work about 9P) and some salad for me. I think DH thinks most anything green is a plot except for his belived brussel sprouts. Yuck. My lunch today was some goat cheese, 1/2 tomato (hard as a rock from Cent. Mkt) and some multigrain crackers.
Carole - You're right about soup weather though I have been known to cook bean soup in the summer esp. since I can make sev. meals of it.
I have to spend time tomorrow cleaning goat barn. One set of mom/babies going to outside pen tomorrow for the day.
