WTF is wrong with people indeed. They said one of the dead is an 8 year old girl. And that out of the 100 plus hurt at least 20 are children. WTF does

it take to do that. Praying for all involved. There were three people on the running board there. One checked in ok. (FirstCall).

Those of US away from there still have to eat, so, having leftovers, Italian medallions with spiral whole wheat pasta.

    Much love.

Luv, I use a thinner and longer rise version of Alton browns recipe. The modifications seem to produce more nooks and crannies.

Chabba, I have not tried any flavored pastas. We did make one today made with some toasted flour, wow was that good! A very nutty and rich flavor with just some butter and parmesan.

    Seaside, happy for you!

Pasta making is fun by itself, but my DSIL makes everything we do fun. She is the sister I never had. Love her!

Laurie, thanks so much for Debbie updates.  Thinking about bedo.  My poor sister.

Nancy, that is the cutest pic ever.  You might as well draw me on that picture with a Sharpie, because I am packing right now.  Seaside, I don't know what you are talking about:  I am not joking.  Nancy and I have a love that is real.  I am going to marry her -- not just move in, as Carberry offered -- and I am going to eat onion rolls every day and gain 200 pounds...

Debbie just posted that Chuck is out of surgery and all went well.  He will "feel like a mac truck ran over him for a few days".  When he is moved to ICU she will be able to see him.

    Laurie,

Thanks for the update! I can imagine the recovery will be rough but hoping that, when he comes out the other side, he will feel so much better...

Debbie and Chuck.... Thinking of you both and praying hard for a speedy recovery....

    Bobo,

Never for a moment thought your offer to Nancy was insincere...lol.... Just loved the offer of the clean-up crew that would not be you... I hate doing dishes, too!

Thanks for the congrats on the good test results... So nice to share news where people understand the worry leading up to the test, whatever test it may be, and the emotions that follow the result, whatever it may be... I think most of my family thinks all is OK and have moved on... They don't see the anxiety that we go through at each test... but that's probably a good thing...

    Happy (((hugs))) to you Seaside.

Much as I'd prefer to post about pasta, I'm thinking with sadness about the families affected by today's bombings at the Marathon finish line...

DH and I were excited earlier in the day when DS2 called to tell us that the building his company recently acquired, which he spend lots of time on since it is his largest Boston account, was front and center at the finish line, so we would see it when people crossed the line. Since DH and I had not yet gotten into Back Bay to see this place (a modern architectural midrise misfit that is referred to as the Darth Vader bldg) that he talks about so much, we were happy to check it out on Marathon Monday in the comfort of our family room. Fast forward to 3:15, when DS2 calls to ask wth was going on, since he had a text from his property mgr saying the building was in lockdown, then he couldn't reach him. DS2 was with friends after the Sox game, not near a TV. We updated him on the bombing, which went off directly in front of "his" building.

Due to the crime scene he could not get into the area and was later relieved to learn that all the tenants were evacuated safely. Despite the fact that the windows of the first four floors were blown out on that side of the building, he was told there were no serious injuries to the people inside the building. TG! I think we've seen enough of the Darth Vader building for now.....

As many of you have probably seen on the news, people who were watching the runners from the street were not so lucky. I am so thankful that the Boston Police, firefighters, first responders, varied medical personnel, and other volunteers triaged the injured in record time, and got them transported to our many hospitals for emergency treatment, or the death toll would have been even worse. In addition to heartfelt concern for the families affected by this horrific tragedy, I feel for the war veteran responders who, by virtue of their volunteer service today, were re- traumatized by the war-like sounds and images. I hope they can get the support they may need.

On a positive note, I was so touched by the messages of love from NYC towards Boston that were illuminated on NYC buildings....a wonderful show of empathy. Thank you, New York! ((((Beantown))))

    Peace....

Lacey, that was a horrible thing. I pray for the families who have people injured or worse. But Boston can be proud of their handling of the situation. The injured were moved out quickly, even with the threat of more happening, responders went in. Inspiring. Much love.

Hugs to all who have family in the Boston area. Lacey, happy that your family is safe. My brother was flying into Boston today for business. Luckily, his arrival was a couple hours after it started. He said the streets were eerie and empty. Not sure if I understand my dad correctly that hotels were asking people to share hotel rooms. I just don't understand how anyone could do this, there's enough cr*p in the world, way too close to home for comfort.

Congrats Seaside!  Enjoy the good news!

Watching the images of the marathon devastation...it's just unbelievable that someone could cause this kind of havoc.  My heart is with the victims, the responders and their families.

I am with you Lacey. I think of Patriot's Day as a special Massachusetts holiday full of quirky New England traditions like men dressing in costumes and pretending to shoot each other. It has always been, in my lifetime, our special day. To have it usurped by political fanatics and terrorism, domestic or otherwise, sickens me.

I am horrified to see my beloved city damaged this way.

Such horrible senseless acts are always impossible to understand. I hope those responsible are found quickly, but that certainly won't ease the pain of those affected. It really makes me realize how vulnerable we all are. It's a strange world we live in.

Debbie,  so happy for your news!

Moonflower, obviously Nancy will not have to bake her own wedding cake, or cook the wedding feast!  I will order the cake from this excellent place I know in New Hope.  It will be a flourless chocolate cake.  And we will have wedding feast from whichever restaurant Nancy wants.  I do not like catered food.  People handle it when they are making it with hands that are not strictly that clean.

Marry me Nancy!  You will never have another care in the world.  I will make sure your sourdough starter is always in a state of flourish.  Don't give your onion rolls away to Laurie for pay!  As Sting would say, You don't have to put on the red light  :)

Lacey, reading back.. so glad you are safe!  Terrible that others were not so lucky.

Forgive my silliness.  I'm from NYC, and that Boston news was pretty tough on us.  And I've got pathology results tomorrow.  I'm not on drugs -- that's not the silliness.  Just trying to stay cheerful and not-about-me at the moment.

Seaside  I totally agree about the worry that goes inside our brains. People are always labeling me as a "survivor" but I dont feel like one when every pain, anomaly, tests sends me into a panic about recurrance. Once a cancer patient..always a cancer patient.

Nance  I was going to give up on our relationship and let bobo have you but then you had to go and post the picture with all that pasta....so now I may have to up the ante!!! Maybe you should open a pasta/bakery business and I can order it online and have it delivered to my home...hmmm.

So sad for those families in Boston.  Its a total shame we cant even attend a happy sporting event without fearing for our lives.

Does anyone here have a good recipes for corn fritters?  A friend made them for me when I was a teenager and we ate them with maple syrup for breakfast.  Have not had any since and I remember loving them.

Nancy, you don't have to put on the red light for carberry!  When we are married you will never have to sell your wares again.

Carberry, first place I would start for corn fritter recipe is Martha Stewart.  Or I bet Cook's Illustrated would have a great one.

Carrie, I like the pasta/bakery online business you are developing for Nance. I'm in for some orders!!

BoBo....hard not to to be about one self when awaiting important health news. Positive thoughts for good boring news for you tomorrow!

Carrie, I agree that it is hard to shed that label of 'cancer patient' when there is so much angst with every test strange pain etc....to say nothing of all the follow up appts. that keep us in that medical loop. A good and necessary thing, I know, but always a reminder of why we are there and what might be " discovered".

I think I will do some retail therapy to lighten the day....

Lacey... I understand the label of "cancer patient" as I held on to it for so long. But one day I realized that I stopped thinking of myself that way, that I was finally ok and cancer didn't apply to me. That lasted for many years; was always reminded around the time of yearly mammo that i was grateful to be past that label and happy to be living cancer-free. UNTIL August when it started up again. Maybe with all the advances in medical therapy, I can once again put cancer completely behind me. This has just been my experience.

My sil keeps suggesting we go into the pasta business. Too much commitment for me. Which is why you all would be wise not to marry me.

Carrie, I have a zucchini corn fritter recipe, if you're interested.

Bobo, good luck tomorrow. Hey, this diagnosis wouldn't be bearable if not for a sense of humor. To me, being a cancer survivor only means you've lived long enough for something else to kill you.

Seaside, yay for the good news!

Bobo, hoping for good news for you, too.

Debbie, glad to hear that Chuck is out of surgery.  Hoping that his recovery goes well.

Nancy, love the pic of the pasta makers!  Looks like so much fun.

Dinner tonight will be meatloaf with a mixture of ground turkey, beef and pork and assorted other ingredients like green onions and bread crumbs and seasonings.  I also intend to make Stuffed Artichoke Casserole following a recipe that was posted at the WW meeting yesterday.  It calls for 2 1/2 cups of Pepperidge Farm dressing cubes.  Instead I made my own bread cubes out of left over home-made bread sprinkled with ground sage and oregano and onion and garlic powder.  The boxed dressing mix is loaded with sodium.  I also plan to bake bread this afternoon so had better get on with it.

The terrorist event in Boston makes me furious.  What kind of sicko/s want to kill and harm innocent bystanders and/or athletes who've trained to accomplish something so admirable?  The motivation is mean and twisted, a manifestation of evil.  I've been expecting (and dreading) more domestic terrorism.  Now I wonder what will happen with the Boston Marathon in the future.  And other big marathons like the NY.  DH has a girl cousin who has run in both.

    Hugs to all.
