mommy - they do love it!  They put their heads back like that and close their eyes.  They also like to be fed by hand but they are very gentle about eating and they have tiny mouths that fit into the palm of your hand easily.

I know - I want one to keep at home with me, lol!  I just need a little one.

Here is today's daily roo, I love his hands:

  • Tonight's dinner was red beans cooked with smoked ham hocks, steamed brown rice and a tossed salad with romaine, radicchio, cucumber, tomato, avocado, yellow bell pepper and feta cheese.  Haven't cooked dry red beans in a while and they were really good.

Tonight is probably nothing at all.  We ate so much at the Grand Canyon that, despite the walks, we probably gained weight.

Eric - great picture.  Thanks for posting.  One of my long term goals was to ride the donkeys to the bottom of the canyon.  Probably not happening anymore, but I sure would like to at least see the Grand Canyon one day.  I asked my brother what area they were in and he said "Deer Valley".  Eventually I'll come to Phoenix to visit.

Today I turned 56. I used to let birthdays slide by, almost unnoticed. But, no longer. Nine and half years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Four and half years ago mets showed on a PET scan. A study using my breast tissue indicated that I had been living with these invasive cells for 12 years before that first diagnosis. I have been living with this disease, known and unknown, since I was 34.

The average life span after a mets diagnosis is just over 2 years. At this point I am an outlier. And so, I celebrate each and every birthday. And I reflect on the things that I have been here to celebrate and mourn. In the past nine years, I have buried both of my in-laws and my father. I outlived my dear Uncle who I cooked for for two years. I witnessed my daughter starting and graduating from college and graduate school, and starting her doctorate. Last week I watched her as she told a young man that she would love him forever. I have outlived a crushing recession that started as I was recovering from treatment and beat my business to a pulp. And yet, I held onto my house and the recession and cancer didn't win that one either. There is so much more, but I think more would bore you.

I tried to make dinner reservations about three weeks ago. Well, it is a three-day weekend. Not a reservation to be found at a restaurant that I wanted to go to. My standby has closed, and the other options were just plain full.

So, Plan B.... cook at home. Yesterday I went to Costco to get rack of lamb and they were on sale! Bought two racks since Mr. 02143 pretended that he didn't want me to do all this work for just two meals. HAH!!!! That man put away some chops. The chops were marinated in a complex sauce of cilantro, parsley, mint, soy sauce, lemon, red wine vinegar, chilis, honey, and I can't remember what else. Then I sautéed some spinach with garlic and the last of the cherry tomatoes from the garden. A perfect meal.

    Happy Birthday to me!

susan - Happy Birthday to you indeed!  It is my privilege to send that sentiment to you and you should absolutely celebrate every birthday, and all of the other days in the year also!

Oh dear... did that sound like I was full of self-pity? I am not. I am truly grateful for so many wonderful things in my life. If it weren't for these errant cells, my life would be pretty darn close to perfect. One of the great gifts of age is, I love my life. I am no longer full of what-ifs. This is the life I have. This is the life I live. And, on balance, it is damn good one.

Susan:  I heard no self- pity, just celebration.  I think that's what you meant - hooray for my life at this point and for what ever is to come.  Very worth a celebration.  Congratulations!!!  The lamb sounds good but you are due a B-day dinner at your favorite restaurant in the next couple of weeks.

Seeing hubby will probably be a bit late coming home from work because boss scheduled a staff meeting for their department today, dinner is the last of the Shepard's Pie.

    Aww w, so cute K!

Tonight is mini meatloaves, mashed potatoes and green beans. Vanilla cake with strawberries for dessert.  More comfort food, sigh . . .  The sun has to shine soon so I can cook something else!

  • Wonderful post, Susan.  No hint of self-pity, just celebration of life.  I had to chuckle when I read how young you are.  No wonder you're not ready to retire.  Recently I asked if retirement is an option.  Of course, it isn't!  You're a young woman.  And full of creative energy.

Everybody's meals sound so delicious!  I'm not hungry because I had an after-golf-event lunch today.   DH will have red beans and rice warmed up and a salad.  He'll be perfectly happy.

Eric, I loved the picture of Sharon.  I didn't realize that it was so recent.  The Grand Canyon is one of those awesome places that pictures can never capture.

This week's TIME magazine has an interesting article by Mark Bittman about the advantages of eating at home.

SpecialK, it's so nice that your DD's job has been such a source of pleasure for you and your dh.

Today we FINALLY got some crisp fall weather.  The air is wonderful and it's a joy to be outside.  I am even gearing up for yard work!

I don't eat much beef but your strip steak sure sounds good Moon.  Guess maybe I'll raid my freezer this weekend and grill a couple.

  • Hi All-

I have been lurking and reading....loving the dinner posts and salivating over recipes...hoping to be able to start cooking more with all of the inspiration you all provide.  Thank you.

And Susan, I wish you a very happy birthday with many many more to come.

I am trying hard to find my place of happy, to enjoy the now and not get pulled into those dark places....and your post was truly inspiring. I hope I can find the joy you so clearly have.  Thanks!  : )

Veruka, it takes some time..... allow yourself to mourn. allow yourself to find joy. allow yourself to cry. allow yourself to laugh. there is no "right" way to get to the other side. Cook with us.... food isn't a bad way to find your way back to the light.

Dinner tonight was highly similar to last night except we had asparagus.

    We have another photo....

    Isn't their happiness palatable?

    Veruka, Welcome! :)

Special....getting a kick out of Roo pix being a family affair....So cute!

Carole, when we got home tonight, I noticed that new Time Mag in the mailbox  and will scoop it up so I can read the Bittman  article, and the rest of what looks like an interesting issue,  before it disappears into DH's pile of periodicals. ;)

DH had a program tonight, so I got healthy creative for my dinner...made a bed of sautéed tuscan kale with onions and mushrooms and cooked two sunny side up eggs on top. Weird but yummy!

Carole & Lacey - I got my Time today too.  It will be fun to compare our thoughts.

Going for PET/CT tomorrow and hoping for no 'sparks' after this long 18 months of treatments.  Guess I'm nervous since I can't sleep.  But how silly.  I have every reason to be positive.  And I'm not likely to know the results until I see my MO next week anyway.  Have to start fasting in 3 hours at 5am so I'd like to get an hour or two of sleep anyway.

  • Minus, we'll all be hoping for a positive outcome.
