Sisters,
Just getting back from my appointment for bilateral diagnostic mammogram....and I got the "ALL CLEAR"! Yay! No calcifications...nothing that looked the least bit unusual!
I'm so glad that I got the results so quickly too! She said, 'See you in 6 months!'...Whew!
I know some of you were in my pocket and I loved having you with me! Who brought the boombox? I swear I heard some LadyGaga playing!
Omaz---your turn for great things!
Love to all..and thanks again!

Great News Tori! I have got a question for you... In my case the Radio Onc told me a year before the next Mammo.... Should I argue for 6 months????

GMA - My MO has me on an annual mammo schedule and I am completely alright with that. I do feel in some cases we are being over treated and in my opinion this seems to be one of them. Each one of us is different and therefore the decision to insist on 2 a year or once a year has to be a very personal one. Hope this helps you out.0

Grammie, I got one at 6 months after radiation (i had lumpectomy). It was sooooo painful. I had it Friday morning, then that Sunday at church, I had to leave I was in so much pain, then that Monday I missed worked....
the place I had it done might have been the pain culprit or the fact that I'm not small, at all, and they called me the other day wanting me to go in for my 6 months. Took everything for me not to laugh into the phone!

Hey everyone I am back. Welcome to the newbies and great for those that have gotten good results. My surgery was 4 1/2 hours and my Dr was very pleased with everything. I am in pain but taking my pain meds. Trying to get caught up here on BCO. So much happens around here it is hard to get caught up.

So glad everything went well Sherry and hope the pain lets up soon. Welcome home.

Just wanted to pop in and let everyone know I had a quick message on facebook from Grannydukes. She is without good interest access. Plans to be home on Monday. I was beginning to think she fell off the face of the earth. She does not have a cell phone so we can't even call her.0

JO-thanks for the update about Grannydukes! It soooo quiet without her here! We miss her!
GmaFoley-it's been 9 months since my last radiation...I was told to go for mammo anytime after 6 months, but I had still had some swelling and I have edema of the breast along with pain. I had to wait to get all that resolved before getting the mammo...for the most part, it really didn't hurt until they did the "magnified" shot of incision sites...OUCH!
I've heard different opinions about follow up mammograms...some doctors say 6 months, others 1 year...other people have to see what their insurance companies will pay and in what time interval. My next mammo will just be on the breast that had the lumpectomy, but I may ask for an MRI for my own piece of mind..then do mammo again 6 months after...I think after 2-3 years after dx, you go back to once a year anyways for most...
Gina-how many mammograms have you had since your lumpectomy so far?

I had read so many posts about ladies getting breast MRIs. What happens if a person can't get one because they are too claustrophobic? I had one about a month ago on my cervical spine - no contrast and was in the machne 10 minutes and thought I was going to come unglued. What an awful feeling. I don't think I ever want to do that again.

Yeah, I know what you mean...I took a "happy" pill before I did my first one...I had on headphones and just sang music to over power the noise...I also had my eyes closed before they put me in and told them to tap me on the hand when it was over...

I'm lucky that the hospital I use now has an open MRI machine. It looks like a giant donut and open in front as you go in. If you are getting an injection for contrast, the nurse just goes to the end in front and injects it into the IV. I know all too well about those closed machines. Can't even count how many times I was in one for my back and knees. I just closed my eyes and thought "mind over matter".

Jo-Breast mri is so much better than a cervical MRI! I have the same experience--they put you in this neck contraption so you can't move then put you in a small tube. Enough to make anyone batty! For breast MRI you are on your stomach and I was given a mirror to look into that was pointed to a potted tree outside the machine. Did not bother me one bit!

I had a MRI core needle breast biopsy and nearly up chucked in the machine. I was in it for over an hour and started to get nauseous and flush after they started to take the biopsy samples. That was a real close call. thank god it was an open MRI and the nurse was able to put cool compresses on the back of my neck. It did help and I kep thinking "I'm not gonna be sick, I'm not gonna be sick".

SusanHG & kingjr - Thanks for the info. I don't think I am looking at needing one until sometime next summer so won't worry about it now.

Have survived 4 MRI's this past year for my back. Laying on my back that long ( 30 -40 minutes) without moving is excruciating because of my back problems. Here we can listen to our fav CD which helps and get to hold a panic button while in the tube. Keeping your eyes closed helps too. Morphine didn't help me but the technicians always talk me through the proceedure which does help. Having said that I would rather have ANYTHING done to me before an MRI.Spinal bone biopsy was a treat in comparison. Unfortunately I have many more MRI's in my future. Is a breast MRI shorter?0

We also have an open tube type MRI. My last one was the worst. I've had several abdominal ones to check my pancreas but this was checking the brain because of the balance problems I've developed since tamoxifen. All were hard on my back but for this one I had to keep my head perfectly still--so of course I kept feeling like I needed to sneeze.

Emily - breast MRI's are usually 20-30 minutes. Depends if you have to have contrast, that requires extra views.

kingjr - I was in the tube for 10 minutes for a cervical spine MRI and thought I was going to totally lose it. I am having recon surgery done and was told by my PS that I would have to have breast MRIs in the future - yikes!!

jo, any way you can find a center like the one here with an open tube? Your head wouldn't even be in the tube.

I would have to ask my MO if on does exist down here. I read a post on one of the threads that you could not do a breast MRI on an open tube. If it can be done, that may not be so bad. It is the closeness - even with my eyes closed, I could still feel it.
