Barbe, your house is stunning!  You must be a professional decorator.  Are you taking all the furniture with you?  I can imagine someone coming in and wanting the home "as is."  Good luck with a quick sale for your price or, better still, more than your price.

Thanks Carole. No, I find as an artist that it comes out in my decorating. I LOVE redoing rooms and would rather move than clean...hehehehehehe. I love seeing where the same furniture goes into the new space - one of the ways I fall asleep at night. I have no emotional bond to any of the furniture, so if someone wants it they can buy it. My mom and step-mom both sold houses with all the furniture included. It would save us $5,000 in moving costs!!!

Barbe, I love the family room, furniture, color, everything. Do you think that color would work in a north-facing living room?

  • barbe1958
    barbe1958 Member Posts: 7,605

Wren, my living room is the gray room and faces east but does not get direct sun, the basement family room faces the same way and is the burnt orange. Both colours have warm undertones and I keep the trim and ceilings a sharp white. Both rooms need lights on  in the late afternoon as they are darker rooms, so would be the same for north facing. Colours either have more blue or more yellow in them. You must be careful which way your choice goes. Think of taupe. There is cafe au lait, bandaid coloured, paper bag colour, skin colour, green - pink - yellow undertones and yet they are all called taupe. Most people make a mistake with yellow and get too bright and acidy a yellow. I am a colour expert and do talks and seminars on it and it was hard for me to understand that people don`t see colour the same way I do. No, I can`t PICTURE what a room will look like, but I do know what GOES.

I paint, so I do understand the undertones. We tried blues in there and just felt cold all the time. We need to either buy new furniture or recover what we have, so I'm trying to think the whole thing thru in advance.

barbe, your house is beautiful!!!! All that work is amazing!! Someone will snap it up!

3jays, I thought your purple gloves were a fashion statement! lol! I have printed out one of the pics of us both and have it in my office. think of you all the time!!!

Chrissy, are ya feeling better yet?

lilyrose, thinking about you, too. We (or I) worry when we don't hear from you, so keep us posted, please!

Kathy, I don't know how you keep up with those kids. My DD brings the 2 kids she babysits for over sometimes and they wear me right out. We are planning on taking them to an outdoor exhibit this week, where we will follow storyboards through the woods. Stuff like that is so much more fun with kids. We were going to go on Saturday, but it has been raining all weekend.

I have gotten a new computer so I spent lots of time getting it set up and bringing over all my financial records. The house is progressing. They got the inside walls up last week. Yay!!! It looks great! I will take pictures when the sun comes back out.

I saw a new doc last week, too. She is a physiatrist. Hopefully she will be able to help me. She does pain management without narcotics. She did trigger point injections for me in my upper back and neck. Then she took my file to study and will see me in 2 weeks.

Leah, I pray morning and night for you and your family!!!!

Barbe, I wish I had the eye for color, but I don't...you do really neat things with it.

  • barbe1958
    barbe1958 Member Posts: 7,605

Thanks ladies! That validates my efforts. Wren you need to use colour with yellow undertones in a cold exposure, but not yellow. Does that make sense? I laugh when people paint dark spaces with light colours. When we moved in the rooms that are now orange were baby blue with gray carpet!! Seriously??? Then you just have light walls in a dark room! I guarantee if you think about a room that gave you a `hug` when you walked in, it had either dark floors or walls. Think of a fav restaurant or hotel or pub (harder for those in the bright south of California but I think you get what I mean).

oh barbe, I wish you were here to give advice. We're trying to decide color for the ceilings. The porch ceiling they primed this morning with a white, but I don't like it. I want it blue (like a gray blue) DD is off gallivanting now that she can walk, but we need to make a decision tomorrow morning. Then there is the post and beam ceiling in the living area. Should we just clear coat it or stain? Aghhhh! I get all bent up about these decisions, like they are so important? The wood floor is going to be stained walnut.

I took a nice Epsom salt bath today. Soaked for 15 minutes then wrapped up in towels and a robe and sweated in bed for 10 minutes, then did it all again. Hopefully something left my system!

    Well, there`s the other side!!!!

mac, it all depends on how much light comes into a room. Do you want the beams to be highlighted? Is the ceiling tall enough to take beams stained the same colour as the floor or do they need to just be texture and be painted out white? As for the porch ceiling, a blue-ish gray would be very pretty and unexpected and not do any damage or offend anyone Shocked so you are right!

As for wall colour with the walnut floor, you have to make sure you are not fighting the colour. I HATE when I see dusty rose walls with orange-y oak floors! (Remember that `80`s colour of pink??) Think of colours you see in large quantity in nature if you want a calm pallate....wheat field raffia golden yellow, slate blue of ocean, dusty green of far horizons....not the red and purple tuplips of Holland fields unless you are looking for some fun. Pure colours close to the centre of the colour wheel are good for juvenile bedrooms - think Fisher Price Toys. Pale white-tinted colours are soothing at an ocean front with wide bright windows bringing in tons of sunlight, otherwise they looked washed out in most homes. Grayed-down tones are the easiest to live with so talk to your paint pro and here`s a tip: if you chose a colour on a swatch, make sure you use the same level on another swatch for the next room, and so on. You might be able to deviate down one, but never up one or down more than one. If you know what I mean? The colour swatches are made to work this way. There is no point having a lovely deep colour in one room and then a prissy light one in the next! There has to be some semblance of order or the house will be jarring. A triadic colour choice is always a good one, too. 3 colours picked exactly evenly around a colour wheel - for example orange, yellow and green. Any variation of those three colours flow smoothly from room to room. Or you can use colours beside each other on the colour wheel for a calmer flow. Colours directly opposite are okay for accents but are jarring on walls - think red an green of Christmas!!

Can`t wait to see what you do!

Hi all!!  I am finally back on the lap top.....yay!!!

Barbe you house is stunning!!! If you have a problem selling that well I think the buyers are blind!  Can't wait for you to post that you have sold and exchanged contracts!!!   Good luck honey! you deserve some of it!

Lisa love your pics as usual........love, love, loved the baby orang with its mommy....soooo cute!  We don't have those little covered bridges so I can't say I have seen many of them.  The ones I remember most are the ones I saw in the movie 'Bridges of Madison County' with that wonderful golden light and the insects lazily flying around in the heat?  Oh my!  What beauty was captured!  I sometimes wish I could paint what I see and what I feel when I see something of such loveliness.

Nancy sounds like your little house is not far off completion and I can't wait to see what colors you choose.  It's bee a long time coming but coming it is and soon!....lol.

Wren, I think I need to come and stay to get some painting lessons......lol......nothing like inviting myself.......

3jays......all that time for an MRI?  What were they doing, cranking it by hand?  Here's hoping your results are not as bad as you are expecting.  A bit peeved at your Condo Management tryin that trick on you.....what on earth had gotten up their noses that they feel the need to go this road and oh my the way, I wish them luck trying to prove you don't have MS  (not).  Their lawyer (yes I know it should be a capital but he doesn't deserve it) is an idiot or is not being told all that he needs to know.  Good luck hon and try not to let it stress you out too much.

Well after two lots on anti b's I think I'm finally on top of the chest......infection girls, infection!  I will give it a few weeks and see how I go but if I am still having some breathlessness etc I think I will be insisting on some further testing being done if for nothing else but my peace of mind.

Guess what?  I have finally finished putting that snowflake blanket together and I now only have the edging to do!  I started it in February and I have worked on it most nights and a lot of days, when I have been waiting in waiting rooms and waiting for results.......yup, a damn long time......lol.  I will post a pic once I get the edging done, just got to make up my mind as to which one I will do.

My new camera and lenses should arrive late this week or early next.....can't wait!  I guess you will be seeing a few experimental pics on here as well so get your glasses cleaned and wait for it!!!

    Love n hugs all!   Chrissy

Barbe, your discussion of room color is fascinating.  And over my head!

Chrissy, you must be so excited about the new camera.  I'm looking forward to seeing some of your pictures.

I had an attack of vertigo last night.  Got up to go to the bathroom and had to hang onto surfaces.  I've had vertigo in the past and this was a little different.  Naturally, my first thought was...stroke.  This morning some of the symptoms hung on but I'm feeling normal now, thank goodness.

    Hi all

I have posted this elsewhere but copying means I don't have to type too much

Haven't been on much; have been reading though but haven't felt like
sitting at the computer so things are improving for me. For the last few
weeks have been hit with a very bad RA and fibro flare. Just haven't
been able to move and feeling dreadful; pain does get you down. Have
started a new drug which is working pain wise but not so sure about side
affects as I am shakey and a bit spaced out. Then big advantage to
feeling like this is that I knit or sew to make my hands work.

Barbe I know your house is wonderful. I have seen it and loved it.

    Mac - wow

    Big hugs to all.

  • chrissyb
    chrissyb Member Posts: 11,438

Oh Aly, I just knew something was wrong when I didn't hear from you.  I'm sure that spaced out feeling will stop once your body adjusts to the new pain med..........as long as it's keeping you comfy pain wise hang in there.   You are right, pain is not good particularly when it is full on and constant.

Nancy Oh my goodness!  The interior of the little house is looking really good!  I also have a pocket door for the bathroom and find it works really well.  By the way, I love the way that door has been painted and it has given me an idea about mine........don't know if it will come to fruition but the idea is there.....lol.  You have really whetted my appetite to see it complete!

Barbe it has taken me awhile to save up for the camera and then to save more I bought it online from Hong Kong.  The comparison price between there and here saved me almost $1000 so I'm very happy about that as it meant I could have the camera I wanted instead of having to settle because of price.  The best thin is they didn't charge me any delivery fee so that was also a big saving.......yippeeee!   I keep telling DH that I can be frugal but he doesn't believe me sometimes...........lol.

Carol I get vertigo sometimes and just hate it!  When it comes on all of a sudden it can be really scary and always send the mind to the dark side.  So glad you are feeling more normal now and I hope the vertigo doesn't return.

    Take it easy my lovelies!

    Love n hugs.   Chrissy

    Hi ladies!

Just wanted to pop in and say goodnight.  Had a busy few days.  I will catch up with all of you soon!  I'm off to chemo early in the morning, so must get to bed.  Hoping you all have a restful night.

    Hugs,  lilyrose

thinking of you this morning, lily! Hope it goes as well as it can!

carole, how scary to wake up feeling like that, hope you are still feeling more "normal"

aly, I too hate that feeling of adjusting my body and life to chemicals. It seems like you just get use to them and then they stop working and you have to try a new one. hang in there!

chrissy, glad you're feeling better and can't wait until we see some pictures from the new camera.

barbe, thanks for the advice! My DD is having mini breakdowns about these decisions, but I keep saying to her this is not life or death it is a choice we can even probably change if we don't like it. Yesterday, it was the pocket door, wouldn't slide, they thought it was too warped, but it turned out it still had a hinge on one side, they took that off and it works like a charm!

I am still moving personal items over from the other house. I have let a friend of the family's wife to be use it for a bachelorette weekend, this weekend. Ahhh, what was I thinking? Oh yeah, I wasn't! lol

excuse any typos, this new keyboard is so sensitive and my fingers are twitchy.

Hugs to you, Aly, I KNOW pain. And we are NOT friends.

mac, that is incredible design you are putting in that gem!!! What advice has the builder given you about the ceiling? If it`s a small space you might want to just white-wash them....and, if the floor is too dark in there it might look too modern.....how dark are you going and did you want an eclectic look? (LOVE eclectic!) HATE the floor colours that are like gymnasiums or Ikea stores, or the orange-y oak look. It`s a fine-line to make me happy with floor stain, but we found a reddish medium tone that we absolutely love. Our new place has natural aged pine which is just stunning. What colour are the walls going to be, mac? Again, a light colour?? Buttermilk yellow? Pale aqua?? Celadon green? Vanilla white? Will the trim be white??

I shoulda been a decorator...sigh....but that`s a hard market to crack without a lot of advertising dollars - like any artistic field. Until you can live off referrals that is.

    barbe1958 Member Posts: 7,605

Oh, meant to say, that`s not a shelf in the kitchen, it`s a ledge...hehehehe. Are you going to put cookbooks up there for colour? plants? baskets? tin containers? I WANT TO DECORATE THAT PLACE SO BAD!!!!!!!!

  • macatacmv
    macatacmv Member Posts: 1,200

barbe, I want you to decorate this place, too. My DD has definite tastes. This was a project to help her get through her surgery and rehab. We decided on a "cedar grove" (grayish green) for the roof deck ceiling. She does not do "trendy".

This morning we picked a lambskin for the walls through out the whole place. Then the antique heart of pine floors will be stained walnut (the painter is going to make samples) and the beams in the ceiling walnut to match. Plus the fir on the trim will be stained walnut, too. I hope it is not too dark. Then we will add color with art and accessories. So she is agonizing about the color of the ceiling boards between the beams. We are using a very nice painter and he is using Benjamin Moore paint. Wait until you see the mosaic bathroom tile!

  • barbe1958
    barbe1958 Member Posts: 7,605

I am not a big fan of trim being stained as it draws attention to the outline of the window - but, having said that, I believe your windows have dark mullions in them anyway, right? Lambskin sounds beautiful, I am assuming it`s a form of white? A soft white? Green on the ceiling outside....why not the blueish one from yesterday so it`s like sky? Then you could continue that stain inside and do between the beams the same as the porch ceiling....cool, eh? Green, blue, heck, either way! That pocket door is stunning! Where did you find it?

I have done some cool things in my years....We had a double-doored closet in the entrance to our condo that was bland so I painted the outside molding a tainted gold like an antique picture frame (beefed it up a bit wider) and then painted a landscape screen across both doors. I used glass knobs to hide the handles and it just looked like a huge piece of wall art.
