Feline may come back at me and tell me I full of poop. I hope that is the case. They got hit with a wind thing. Wind things take preparation. I tried.

We in Florida prepare always for wind and secondarily for fire. All it takes is one or the other. We are not in an earthquake zone. That would be the third. Poor folks in California have to deal with all three.
Once through these emergencies, you develop a different attitude. Preparation and Mitigation. How do I protect my family and housing? How does the community protect itself? How can we prevent this devastation in the future?
After Hurricaine Andrew in 1992. Broward Miami- Dade counties established codes. All after in Florida all codes had to meet these codes. These codes are updated as things are learned. How far these codes are used outside of Florida, no idea. But they are stringent.
I 'll give a few examples. This is the biggest : Hipped roofs i.e. minimal overhang with a foursquare roof. Then Hurricane windows. Hurricane garage doors. Hurricane clips for the roof attachment to the structure. Concrete building versus stick building. Flood plane elevation. Drainage cannels. Surface water management.
Flood plan elevation has been a problem. The new code calls for new properties to be built up so high. That has caused drainage problems for neighbors. It's an on going battle.

Sas - we once lived where we had flash flood possibilities. I used to pack coolers and keep them in the Suburban, panties, water, meds, food, ready to spend the night on the roadside w the family and our pets too. Tornadoes had to be prepped for in a different way, being home w no electric, no roof maybe, first aide necessary and we were it for emergencies. And we lived on a mountainside once 1/2 mi up w no real neighbors - had to be prepared for snow and no electric. But there on mountain we had a blizzard and I was there w pets and DD, Hubby still lived in IN and traveled back and forth as did I. The blizzard led me to deal w digging heavy snow, hauling extra wood, water and freezing food in drifts on deck, etc. I got a wedge fracture in back, thought it was a heart attack but wasn't had to be rescued by Hubby and DBIL - took all of us back to IN to my dad's where Hubby stayed since my mom had passed, keeping him company. Could not be prepared for the wedge fracture, but all else, we did pretty well DD and I. Here on ridge now it is all the above but not flash floods, but add the Derecho straight line winds and I wonder about earthquake being we are possibly on a direct fault line in moraines. But now I am just not prepared for anything and I need to be more than ever. Your posts inspire me and make me think. Eyes not glazed.

Dodged a bullet today - canceled bronch told them I am being treated for walking pneumonia and getting better. Turns out the pulmonologist was indeed looking at an old PET CT from May. I spoke to radiologist who read the PET CT from Oct 2 and he said lung clear, no node, pneumonitis clearing well, no collapsed lobes. He said the bronchial tube needs to be un-narrowed I am assuming w laser surgery - and agreed that esp since I have to be put under that it would be best to just do it and not go in for a look-see, no sense being under twice. Pulmonologist #1 has bit the dust.

Sas fine thanks. Very fortunate here. third of the country off the grid. 3 dead. 1.5 billion worth of damage and all we lost was DH's polytunnel for the tomatoes. We kept electricity throughout.We also obeyed instructions about staying indoors. Complete shutdown of the country bar the emergency services undoubtedly saved many lives.

Mama Ray, The nice thing about quilting is that you're sewing straight lines. Or at least you are for the simple quilts. I haven't tackled the kind Smaarty does.

Did you ever hear what the wind speed was? Let us know how the recovery is going. You are used to storms, but this was different. The only positive is they will look at storms differently now. That's what happened after Andrew. with each storm after that, each agency modified how they responded.
The power companies had something like 12 million back on line in record time with Irma. But they have developed amazing response preparation. Plus, upgrading systems continually i.e substations, changing stick poles to concrete poles. The picture of staging area for trucks and men was huge and so organized. they were deployed through out the state. Ready to move out as soon as it was deemed safe. But they have years of planning and upgrading. Regretfully, your linemen are not going to have an easy time, just b/c they have never had such a storm since 1842(5). Infrastructure wasn't designed for it.
Plus, people will look at trees differently. They are lovely living things, but in a storm they become a huge destructive source.
All commodities are going to be in short supply for awhile. People are going to become angry in a week or so b/c everything isn't up and running. Recovery just isn't that easy, unless preplanned.
But the thing going for you folks is you are a tough group under pressure. Never mess with the Irish,, English, Welsh, and Scotch. The loudest and angriest are going to be those on public assistance. They have been convinced to depend on others rather than their own self reliance.
Blue, Blzzards not fun either. Once hitched all the way to the hospital in Akron. Got out of some kind persons car. A cop at the door said all I had to was call and they would have come gotten me. Nurses were consider "essential". haha it was nice to feel essential. Stayed a few days.

No disaster is easy, but I still say I would take wind over fire.
Had an odd memory come forward, We had a summer of fires in1998(?). One of the recommendations was to secure the back and forth sprinklers to the cables with overlapping spray to wet down the roofs. That means having enough hoses long enough to set them properly. We changed the outdoor faucets to the four outlet type for multiple hookups.

Sas Met Éireann (the national metereology body) observed mean wind speeds of 128km/h (80 m/ph) with gusts of up to 156km/h (97 m/ph). The fastest gust recorded was 191km/h (118 m/ph) at Fastnet Rock in Cork.
Previous records held for gusts were joint record holders 1961 and 1945, so it's been a while since there was a new champion! As I was not alive for either of those am hoping reigning champion 2017 is not going to be overtaken during my lifetime!

Feline, We can get some awful wind storms here. Once there was one on Thanksgiving. It took out electricity for thousands of people who were half way thru cooking the turkey. Lots of ingenious ways to finish it off. The same storm blew away the Hood Canal bridge. It connects the main land to a peninsula and is 7,867 feet long (about 1.4 miles). And it's not the first storm to blow away a bridge. Right now they're warning of a fairly mild windstorm this week. Dangerous mostly because the trees still have leaves which makes them more likely to lose branches or fall over. Trees here seem to have shallow roots. Where I grew up, it's very dry and trees have to go way down to get water. I don't remember any ever blowing over there.

Smaarty! - So good to see your post. I have been wondering where you were. I thought of you again yesterday at the lymph edema therapists office because she has a stuffed "Cheshire Cat" just like your avatar and so Smaarty popped into my mind.

Feline - I am so glad you & your DH are okay after that storm.
Had errands to take care of yesterday and was gone longer than planned. I had left Kirby home. Apt. was dark when I got home and when I opened the front door there was the unmistakable odor of poo. I walked in and of course I stepped in it, then walked across the carpet before I realized what had happened. Ewww!
So, at 7:45 p.m. I am shampooing carpet and taking the throw rugs to the laundry room to wash them.
This is the third or fourth time recently that Kirby has done this. I guess I will have to crate him from now on if I have to leave him home for some reason.
Okay, I am off to get breakfast & a shower. Going to the movie this afternoon. Gonna see "Some Kind of Different As Me"

Sas - DD is on the east shore in northern UK. Fine there. The back healed but I couldn't drive or lift a small can of coffee for months. We were fortunate on mountain that we had a natural fed spring for water, never froze, of course pipes could freeze. Woodburner that worked well and we could cook on or in, a lot of wood, deck of snow to keep food frozen. DD and I were fortunate too to get into PA just before blizzard started, picked up dogs from kennel, got home and it was already snowing. You hitched from FL to Ohio? In a blizzard?!
Slept through night again. 10 1/2 hours sleep. Makes up for night before coughing until 5:30 passing out then up atn hour then asleep until noon. Hate nights like that. Looking forward to more peaceful nights.
The hemp oil I ordered arrived. Started day dose today and will use the nightime later. Nightime is only 15 mg cannibol plus 5 mg melatonin. Taste is really decent. But it is not raw, I prefer raw since it is stronger and had CBD and CBDa. Complementary therapy of my choice.
My DS internet has been out two days, entire area from tower down, she called me she is loosing it w withdrawal from her competitive games that are only online.
Trying typing w keyboard on a big keyboard pad balanced across stomach/table so muscles in r shoulder do not get to coughing like usual. Seems to help. Commenting more later.
Making a roast w veggies to turn to veggie beef soup for when we get home after liver biopsy Friday. Tomorrow is leftovers but not the gourmet chicken noodle-butternut squash-mushroom soup, that is trashed. Sorry soup.
Junie let us know about that movie. Right now I am plowing through a bucket list of movies never watched. On 4th season of Downton Abbey.
MammaRay - I cannot give the pulmonologist any credit, I figure it out intuitively I suppose, everything in me said it was the wrong scan and do not go through w bronch this time.
Wren - that is a very very long bridge. Is it tight? Oncoming traffic close and edges closer?

Bluebird, the bridge is floating with a draw span in the middle to let shipping through. We have another floating bridge over Lake Washington right in town. They close it when the wind gets to a certain strength. It gets a little hard to drive with waves crashing over the bridge.

The few times he has consented to make me canned chicken noodle soup, I have to remember to tell him to add water (as per instructions on label) - he doesn't like the broth part and will either not add the water or strain the broth out. How is that still soup? Hoping you stay healthyish. - Just tell those docs;

Yes Shep, DH dun had a few gales now! He was in Charlotte for Hugo in '89. Met Eireann = Meterological Service of Ireland (Eireann = of Ireland), Met is just shortened from the full title.
We also had a record breaking wave apparently, a weather buoy registered the biggest wave ever recorded off the Irish coast. Tall as a 6 storey building. Glad I wasn't at sea for that one! Unsurprisingly, that particular buoy was ripped from its moorings shortly afterwards and had to be recovered after the storm.
The ship that recovered it was called the MV Puffin.
One thing I noticed after the hurricane was the windows (house and car) were very dirty. It was an African hurricane essentially, so carried a lot of sand and dust. Went to the local car wash as the visibility on car windows was so bad, I just needed them clean for a journey right away. Well there was a huge queue for the service. Cashier told me business was hopping. As the saying goes "it's an ill wind that blows no good"!
House windows can wait for the next rainfall!!

Feline, Thanks for the wind speed. Odd, I never found out what our wind speed was. Hahah, it was fast. I did read after last post that the 3 poor people killed were all tree related. Like I said they can be lovely, but in a storm they can be deadly and terribly damaging. That's why I cut all mine down. Sad. But the thought of them coming through the roof is something I chose not to worry about anymore. I apologized to them when they were being cut down.
Blue, you are so funny. I was in Akron then. That was the blizzard of 1978. Fun time. Akron was terrible place for storms. It's on seven hills. No matter where you went it was difficult to avoid those hills. ....My Di (cleaning gal) was telling me about CBD oil. There's a thread here on BCO. I have it in my Favs, but have never read it. Think about going to 10mg on the Melatonin. That one article has melatonin as being good for Breast cancer and MBC at a dose between 10-30 mg.

Approximately 72 hours ago Congresswoman Fredireca Wilson (D, Fl) chose to politisize a phone call from the President Trump to the wife of one of the fallen servicemen of Niger. The MSM shredded President Trump. His words were taken out of context. I'll make no comment on that here.This afternoon General Kelly at the daily briefing made a statement. It's 18 minutes in length. It's a lesson. A great lesson. I've watched it three times. Each time I caught more of his message. You might not need that many viewings.
