INSOMNIACS place to talk in the wee hours

Both of the kiddos are spending the night at the vet's. I don't know how I'm going to sleep without that warm lump to cuddle. I wish I could shake this sense of impending doom. We still have no clue what is causing the problem, but either it is contagious or they both got into something. Our yard is a jungle, neither of us has been up to doing anything out there, and the cottonwood has been fierce this year and we are both so allergic to it. I guess I will put a mask on and brave the wilderness tomorrow. I'm supposed to call at 10 for an update.
You are all so great to be so supportive and caring. Thank you all.

Mag, hoping for good news tomorrow from the vet.

Can't sleep. Tinnitus is in full force. Sounded like I am in the tropics at night surrounded by cicadas. I think it's the Keflex that my PS prescribed to help prevent post-op infection. Took me awhile to figure that out. At first, I thought maybe it was the anesthetic or the Emend given to prevent nausea. Never in a million years I thought that Keflex could be an ototoxic drug. I have one more day left of the antibiotic, but I think I am going to stop. Hoping everyone is sound asleep right now.

I have my two on Trifexis. A monthly pill. No fleas, ticks, repels Mosquitos, so no heart worm. Not cheap, but no need for other treatments and expense.

I have Activyl waiting at the vet for dog's flea problem. Tried to give me a pill good for 3 months which I declined. This dog is 8, barfs on cue. Can't see giving her a long acting oral drug. If she reacts what the heck would I do. Activyl is a topical. I read lots of comments. Seems Frontline is not working so great. Will give it a try. Parts of her allergic skin look better but she's chewing/licking on the tops of her paws something awful. Not sure if that's grass allergy or fleas; think odd place for flea problem. Would hardly let me look at them and usually she's OK, not pleased but lets me look. DH bathed her Tuesday. Guess it's my turn tomorrow. I just manage to sit on bathtub edge and get it done. May need a hearty cocktail or more likely a 2nd round of Advil afterward.
She's already on Heartguard for heartworms but I think that works differently, internal if they ingest a flea.
Praying you get good news Mags.
Love - adore the wedgie cartoon. Not surprised on the Keflex. Hope you are soonest finished with it. Got up to pee about 4 am. Couldn't decide if it was my tinnitus or thunder. Finally saw some lightening out the window. Bingo. Big storms rolled thru about 5:30-6 with heavy rain. Parts of north Ft. Worth are heavily flooded. All parts of TX are out of exceptional or extreme drought. Gosh would have thought most all would be out of all but the least but not quite yet. May get that next week.

12.40 am... Just checking in. :-) oh well.. It's a nice rainy night here.. Love to lie in bed and hear the rain on the roof !

Oh? Lucy is still in bed I'll bet... Yes Lilgoats.... We have had cloudy, stormy weather for the past WEEK! Just ain't any fun McGee!
Hope all you guys pets are doing better today.... It's just such a worry when they have something wrong with them!
Went to see my friend Carol yesterday.... I really don't think she will ever get back to the way she was... Too much time went by before her Son found her after that stroke... She is maybe going home next Wednesday... They have her trying a walker, but she can't move her right leg yet... Right arm just a little... but it's her speech... Can only say a couple words still.... I know she IS getting better, but man, it is really going slow...
Her Son emailed that they have 24 hour care in place, because she HAS to be able to use a walker... not just the wheel chair... I think our age, plus so much time went by after the stroke before she got any help....
And my friend Theresa is doing VERY good! She has started playing Bingo at that place now! Just won 2 more dollars! One gal told her GO home Theresa, you won yesterday! Hah! Altogether, this past week she has won $8! That little gambler! But she sounds so good, and is coming out of that long worry/mourning process she has been under for about 6 months! So it's fun to talk to her.... she calls every night after her Dinner, and we talk and laugh and just act silly.... I know you guys find that hard to believe....
But she is 90! Spookie I know you find that hard to believe, that ANYbody is older than I, but it's true... So Hah on you!Going to lunch at our friend Rosie's house.... Loverly, she is the one from Viet Nam....!!! She is making "wraps" again for Janie and I. She is the Chef at one of the King Soopers here.... really a great cook! So despite this cooler, damp weather, we will have fun!

Could be a reaction to Heartguard. Can be toxic to herding breeds. Why they use a collie on they package is beyond me. There is a study from Washington State Univ that confirms the toxicity of this.Ingested fleas cause tapeworms, Mosquitos can cause heart worm. I've heard of that 3 month pill too won't give it. Most at my dog park won't either. Fleas have built up resistance to frontline plus too, was using it twice a month on my Aussie, just didn't work anymore.

Chevy- I hope your friend, Carol, does okay at home. The sooner she gets out of rehab, the better. Will she continue to get PT, etc. at home?

It's actually Iverheart but I think it's the same ingredients. She's been on it since I got her. Maybe you're right, it's ingested mosquitoes not fleas. I know we keep her on it year round even here in North Texas.
No it's allergies. She's a rat terrier and I know terriers are prone to skin allergies. She went several years ago to the high dollar dog allergy doc. Allergic to almost everything environmental and I live in mini and not so mini ranchland. No food allergies - I just did the no chicken, no wheat because I thought it might contribute and no bigger deal to do it. She sneaks an occas. tidbit dropped on the floor but for the most part is wheat free. DH will go get the Activyl today and I'll put it on after bathing her tomorrow. DD will just have to suck it up and not snuggle as much with her tomorrow.
Chevy - sounds like Theresa is doing marvelously. But don't be surprised if grieving hits her hard again. Hope your friend Carol can go home even with 24 hour care. Glad her family is able to arrange this.

Just got off the phone with vet. She says they are their mystery patients. They had no more vomiting and diarrhea yesterday, so had breakfast this morning and being watched to see how that goes. If no more symptoms they can come home.
Cousin and I were talking about it this morning and we think Rose's symptoms might have been just anxiety. She only threw up once and had just a few little spot of diarrhea on the carpet, and nothing since she got there.
Thanks for all the good wishes etc., y'all know about that special bond.
Can we just have a boring weekend now? Maybe even followed by a boring week? The next week we head out to spend a long weekend with our Missouri friends and we are both so looking forward to that! (They are the ones who made an 8 hour drive each way to spend 24 hours with us when I was going through chemo, and we just sat on the couch and yanked and watched movies.)

OMD yes understand that bond! So scarey when they are sick!!!! Hope they come home today.

I love the sound of rain on the roof too! We have a cabin and the rain on the sky light is particularly soothing.. if I leave my hearing aides in. I couldn't sleep at all last night up from 1 until 5 ugh.. I'll be a grumpus today. I took 5mg ambien too.. worthless. I find not getting enough sleep to make everything that ails you magnified by 10.
Interesting about all the flea stuff. We were die hard advantage folks until it stopped working. Then switched to Frontline which stopped working last summer. So with cats and dogs in all the fences bordering ours and all but 2 of the 6 in and out... we had to switch. Revolution is topical and does heart worm so cheaper in the long run. Never tried Trifexis.. on the dogs. I will ask about it. I never heard of Activyl either. Let me know if it works. We need to keep one step ahead of the fleas! Praying your dogs just have a tummy flu and will be fine.

Mag, good news indeed! Hoping your babies get to come home today so you can spoil them.
The clouds came in, the winds picked up, then...............nothing. What a tease. We were supposed to get rain. Oh how I love the sound of raindrops on the roof or against the window especially at night. Love thunder and lightning too. There is just something majestic about it.
What is going on with the allergies in pets too? We have so many kids with allergies and now it seems like pets get them too! My other younger Sis has to give her 2 dogs special food also- Natural Balance LID Bison and sweet potato.
Ms Chevy, good to hear that Ms.Theresa is doing much better. I love to chat with people of advanced age because they have so much wisdom and history to share. Ms. Carol has two things against her- it is not just the disrupted communication between her brain and body, but also the muscle dystrophy or weakness. I think it is good she gets to go home with 24 hour care. I hope that they continue to work with her daily to get her to the point of independence.
Yes I remember Rosie. Is she making Vietnamese spring rolls with peanut sauce dip? Yum. How are her eyes?
Jazzy, I like Ray Obiedo. Thanks for the introduction! Will add him on pandora list.
Goats, thank you. So you have heard about Keflex causing tinnitus? 30 out of 5492 people get tinnitus in a study. That is only .55%! Lucky me.
Patty, good to hear you hooting.
Has anyone heard from Mommyof2?
Hi1, happy moving. Wish you minimal stress.
MammaRay, hope things get better.
Lucy must be in dreamland now.....thanks to the rain

Chevy, Check in with son. Carol is eligible for rehab as long as she's making progress. Is she on Medicare? Medicare covers 21 days. Most places now have a stroke team evaluation in the hospital. Neurologist, speech therapy, medical doc, social worker, occupational therapist, and physical therapy. Each writes there portion of the report. The only way she wouldn't be eligible is if she wasn't making progress. That's not what you are describing. She will not make rehab progress at home the same as she will in a facility with all the services. I encourage you to have the son be more proactive(pushy) about placement. Even if they have 24 care set up, it can be changed. Too important to Carol. He needs to voice his concern today. Once she's home, it'll be difficult to get her into a facility. It can be done, but again it's more difficult.
Chevy I can't call phones out. You've trusted me on other stuff. Carol has a chance to reach her highest level of function by going to a rehab center. Tell son to ask if the have a special rehab hospital in your area. If one's available that's number one choice. If it's a nursing home and rehab facilty that's second choice.
Plus at a rehab hospital if the patient is documented to be making progress, they can certify for more time that Medicare will cover. Not sure if standard nursing home/ rehab combo places can do it. Pretty sure they can't. The rehab hospitals have different docs------
Cut and paste this post to him

Chevy is she in rehab or the hospital? I can't tell from the posts. They start rehab in the hospital, then it's continued at rehab.

Chevy you can ask son about discharge plan to home. The usual is discharge is with Homehealth---with that she will get a nurse for episodic visits, physical therapy, occupational therapy ---this is covered by Medicare. Standard discharge plan. Since she has 24 coverage a nursing assistant likely won't be requested by the nurse. The nurse can certify for 8 weeks and then recertify if necessary. Doctor actual signs the order, but it's the nurse making the recommendation. It's involved --details irrelevant. The 24 hour coverage is usually private pay --meaning the family/ patient is paying for that. Medicare doesn't cover that b/c it isn't skilled care.

Mags, Happy dance
YAY. You likely missed the post----save their dog food, but don't feed them any of it. Call the 800 number on the can or bag, they will do a 20 question thing. They are required by law to track problems like this. EVEN if the vet can't definitely say what caused this. They in turn have to report it up the chain. Remember the China problem----this is how it was found out b/c of reports that then indicated it was spread over many states.Mags I had two dogs go through this, but we knew it was the food. Pedigree. It was before the China thing, but most people know what happened with that. BTW the company may ask for you to send the food. Refuse---it's evidence.

JAZZY____YOU ARE SO RIGHTJazzzy, I did take care of DH way back when 2010. I remember talking to them and getting all the credit reports. I sent the death certificate so many places. That was the piece I couldn't remember, if I sent it to them. It was a pITA getting through to all of them. I'm glad you brought it up. Thanks

Same here Jazzy!

Ms. Sass, so grateful for your knowledge and willingness to help others. Sounds like Ms. Carol is a fighter and has shown improvement. It would be ashamed if she didn't get the help.

I just talked to Chevy. Carol is in a rehab facility. Her son already got her another week. Carol has Medicare and Goodyear 2ndary. I suggested that he work on at least another week. The two keys too getting more time beyond the Medicare 21 day limit is 1. is the patient making progress 2. is the patient making the effort. If the patient plateaus they are actually required to discharge . If the patient isn't making an effort they are required to discharge. So, maybe he can get her another week. Generally facilities have a conference once a week to decide about each patient and what the plan is. If he want's to get it extended beyond Wed next he has to catch them before that meeting.
Just as an FYI. Check your local areas for hospitals that are listed as Rehab Hospital. This is the name of the one in my county "HealthSouth Sea Pines Rehabilitation Hospital". They specialize in stroke and spinal cord injuries, but they do take other patients. The importance of knowing about these facilities are probably too numerous to describe. Because they are credentialed as a hospital they have laboratories, imaging, pharmacies. For example, someone needing labs monitored because they are anemic---the lab is drawn and completed right there versus being sent out. If the person then needs blood they can be given it versus having to be sent back to the other hospital. It's Marvelous. That's a small example.
If you or a family/friend have a need for rehab, the primary hospital social worker making arrangements may not necessarily tell you that the rehab hospital is available, even though you meet the criteria for admission to that rehab hospital. By knowing what's available in your area can allow you to request that request for review be sent to the facility. They can't refuse. Medicare covers them if patient meets the criteria. Non-Medicare Insurance is different, but not out of the question until you work the ropes.
I insisted on Sea Pines when my Mom was ill in 1995. Sea Pines was more than an hour away. It more than lived up to it's reputation. So worth the distance. Light years above local facilities.

Hi gals... back from lunch! Rosie fixed up our favorite stuff! A big platter of rice noodles, (either bean or rice vermicelli) with scallions, green leaf lettuce, lots of sweet Basil, and Cilantro, sliced cucumbers and blanched bean sprouts.... You can pile all that on the lettuce, but easier to eat in a bowl, with her home-made "fish-sauce"! So good! Also shredded carrots and radishes.... And Loverly.... The peanut-sauce!.... We didn't have the Spring Roll rice wraps.... just put everything in the lettuce leaves.... or eat it like a salad....
She fixed some shrimp tempura things.... along with marinated skewered chicken pieces.... for the shimp sauce...
Loverly, she came from Cam Rohn Bay.... Her name is Vothi-Twyet-Hong.... ?? I think.... she wrote it down, but now I'm not sure...
That is her Dad's name, then her Mom's, and hers.... meaning "snow-rose".
So we have known her as Rosie... for over 35 years. She thinks she is 60 or 62.... Our "other Daughter from another Mother"....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61UYPb9SZS4
She just had her eyes "fixed.".... Her lids were coming down over her eyes, and getting harder for her to see, especially from the sides.... she looks the same, but she can see better....
Thanks Jazzy.... Yes, she really wants to go home.... her care will continue, and her rehab.... It HAS to.... She is just stuck in her wheel-chair right now....
And Lil-goats.... Yes, Theresa says she still "talks" to him.... and when she passes his room, where he was, she misses him going down to meals with her.... they had separate rooms, because he went there first, but then Theresa went there about 2 months later.... So she does miss him, but is doing okay... 70 years together.... that is amazing.
Mags..... so glad they are doing better! Maybe it was something like our dog got into? At least the Vet got it fixed! Find out what the Vet is feeding them....
Rosie, you sleep with your hearing aids IN???? I can hear the rain if I go out in it.... Ha! Same with Thunder.... We have an up-stairs, so the only way I can hear the rain is to go out in it, or go in our garage, with the corrugated tin roof.... THEN it sounds so nice! I still want to run with my Daughter in the rain.... On the lawn.... it just sounds fun!
Spookie.... that is so true, about that bonding.... It's hard to explain how I was with Lacee.... just that she was "my girl"......
Sass, thank you for the post and the call! Actually I don't know if she is making progress.... I'm just going by what Mike says, but I still don't see her standing, or any more movement on her right side.... As far as her speech, that hasn't changed.... but they HAVE to fix her, right?
So yes, she is in a rehab center...care center....
http://colavria.com/communities/the-rehabilitation-center-at-sandalwood/
And yes, I know it will be mostly private pay..... But like he said, they can afford it.... She can't go to the bathroom alone yet.... If she could just get on her feet before they release her.... but I don't know..... But she lives alone..... If she was MY sister, or relative, I would feel better asking Mike WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING WITH HER... but like I said, I don't know him well enough.... to offer any suggestions....
Okay.... soooooooo cold here.... have the heat on again... and got the tomatoes covered up yet AGAIN! Lots of rain expected tonight....

Schatzi leaned on the wall phone line plug and broke it. I lost internet and phone. I got internet back after playing with all the lines--not easy under the table. I was on the way to the store to get a part and lo and behold there was the cable guy a few houses down. He gave me some clues--I got the phone back on line YAY.
0 -
Darn dog!!! Give her an extra smooch and tell her you still love her. Thought you were getting a new cell? With Internet
0 -
Wow Ms. Sass, you are a Jill of all trades? Haha. Good for you!
0 -
Loveroflife---desperation is the mother of invention? No phone, No internet.... It's all cable bundled. I did get cable fixed, but I couldn't call the cable company to fix the phone.... That's why it was very cool..... I see the cable truck and the cable guy right at the moment I need a cable guy problem solver. Can't get better than that, plus I learned stuff.
Spookie, DS is in the process of getting a new phone. But I screwed up. I forgot, forgot--------BIG forgetting. On that old phone is a voice message from Greg...The last voice message. I've saved it for five years. Every time I think to tell or ask Ds about the old phone, I can't get through or leave a message to tell him not to get rid of the phone.------whew he just called,I asked about the phone, he said he had it. I told him what I just told you. Then he's silent, and then says he doesn't know where the phone is............fiddlesticks, the exact thing I didn't want to happen ---happened. Bugger. If he'd said the phone was gone, I wouldn't have told him about the voice message. Bugger.
