my daughter's boyfriend just texted me and said he saw something on the show "The Doctors" and they mentioned something about patients should request a thyroid shield when they get radiation treatments. Have any of you ladies heard of this ???

Hello there: Are you Lisa, the dog groomer from RC?  If so, I know you and you know my girls. My youngest daughter, Annette, age 37, diagnosed with breast cancer. Going to UW/Madison.Has another upcoming MRI/bioposy.  Can you email me at: lilliesgirl@gmail.com and we can talk more.  We have contacted GRACE to see if they will help with traveling expenses-did you contact them?  My sister was a breast cancer survivor for 18 years, and I spent 3 months in North Carolina caring for her until she went to be an angel in heaven in Feb. Hugs, Judy

Hi Lisa: Do you know about GRACE (Greater Richland Area Cancer Elimination). You complete an application and you are from Richland County-they meet once a month-open on Wed-but I printed out app.   The money comes from Walk with Grace in August and used only in limited areas including Richland County.  They can help with gas, traveling expenses, food, etc.  Also "Look Good, Feel Better" program-provides women with cancer to get free facial, beauty treatments, free wigs (if needed) and free beauty supplies (donated about $200 worth).  This is held at Richland Hospital once a month-I have the info if you're interested. My daughter will be going to the one in early July.  We live just outside of Richland Center-so not far from each other.

    Hi Lisa,

Use the search feature here and put thyroid shield in the keywords box.  You will come up with a fair number of posts about it.

Heck, couldn't hurt... I might look into that myself.  Cool

Well ladies I drove myself to my rad appt. today. And believe it or not I survived... well sort of. I got lost and could not find my car in the ramp. Took me 20 minutes to find it....LOL My appt.lasted about 30 minutes or less. I got 2 additional tattoos. I had 2 female and one male tech. The male tech did most of it. I was a bit embarassed, but it wasnt so bad i guess. He was very calm in his voice. I have 8AM appts. the next two days . Then after that my appts are set up between 1030-1130 the next few weeks. They said sometimes the time will change due to several factors that my brain didnt remember cuz i only got 5 hours sleep last night. MUST MUST MUST go to bed earlier rest of this week. I was a very bad driver today and did a lot of nodding off and swerving. NOT GOOD AT ALL.On the way home I stopped at each small town and rested about 10 minutes and then continued on until I got to my Dad's in Spring Green where I stayed for 1/2 an hour.

I was told to use the lotions and Aquafor starting today, but it feels so odd putting lotion/ointment on skin that is totally fine looking/feeling. Will it really do any good right now ? I saw someone post and i think i was told to have the skin clean for the treatments. so does that mean i should shower off the lotion/oitnment every morning before treatment you think ?

As for our meet up and munch...I saw today where Panera Bread, Pancheros, Perkins, IHOP, Noodles& Company are located near the UW....anyone have a preference as to where to meet ? Tomorrow they will give me my next weeks appt schedule so I will know what time on June 10th I will be at the UW. They have my appts plotted out for all my treatment but like i said they said times may change. But I will look and see when my June 17th and 24th times are.

Hi Lisa, I was thinking of you all day.

Sounds like the procedure was not as bad as the transportation issues.  You sound like you are quite anxious, too.  If you are too anxious to sleep, you might want to talk to your family doc about some short-term aids.  Remember that radiation IS a short-term, situational stressor, in other words, this too shall pass.

Supposedly the worst fatigue hits after you are into radiation a few weeks.  Keep an eye on how you're doing.  It might not be feasible - or safe - to keep driving yourself every day.  Would you ask if the Breast Center has a social worker to help you with planning?

Hope to see you soon at a lunch or other get-together!  This illness sure puts your life on "hold," doesn't it?

Hey all, what a nice day out there today!  Reminds me of why I live here, sometimes in the cold of winter / heat of summer I wonder LOL.

Lisa, glad to hear you got through #1.  Sorry, no help from me on rads questions.

How long is your course of treatment?  Your guardian angel will be working overtime!

As for restaurants, I would vote for Panera or Noodles.  Want to try for the 10th?

May as well go for sooner rather than later, we can always get-together after that.

    kll22: thanks :)

Anne: I missed saying thanks to you for thinking of me. And yes, the oncologist suggested I talk to a social worker about a couple of issues. I am a little confused though as to if i am to call someone to schedule that or if the onco. was going to set that up. As for driving safely...i was pretty out of it again today too. I am just going to have to take only one of my sleep pills tonight and go to bed earlier. Luckily i only have one more of the 8AM rads. After that they are from 1030-1130 am

Its still pretty tricky as far as planning appts. though as I drive my son to and from work and have some cardio and counseling appts. next week . I am only scheduling work for the wknds now until i am done with rads though so they helps some.

Hey Lisa, how'd the parking go today, better?  Hope your tx went well too.

Race for the Cure is this weekend so won't be on tomorrow.  Going right from work to my MIL's house (and go out for supper).  Will stay overnight, then we'll walk together Sat. (and go out for lunch).  See it's really all about the food LOL!

Speaking of which, what time would be good on the 10th for lunch?  Smile

Not exactly sure how far Panera is from the rads clinic..

My June 10th appt is at 11AM...so I should be out of there by 11:20 if i dont lose my car again in the ramp....LOL I managed to find it today even though it was a long walk to the nearest elevator. Have fun on the walk ! I so much wanted to be a volunteer but cant afford the extra gas right now with all i am spending for gas for treatment. I could never walk more then half a mile at this point anyway. I really need to get more exercise. I like walking but i hate doing it alone :(

Good luck and have fun to all of you walking in the Komen Madison walk this weekend!

Lisa:  glad to hear things are going well with rads aside from the drive and parking issues.

Went back to work for two days this week and overdid it (that tends to be my way!) so am trying to work from home today for a short while.  Thank goodness for flexiblility!  Am waiting anxiously to dress "normally" again soon -- everything irritates the incision areas.

Hi all, today was RFC.  What a nice day!  Walked with my MIL and SIL on a 5K through mostly residential neighborhoods and along the lakeshore.  A pretty route with a gorgeous view of the Capitol and downtown Madison. It was hot and sunny but not too humid TG.  Several kind souls put on their sprinklers for us to walk through and cool down a little.  A light breeze helped too.

The news tonight said there were 12,000 participants and of those 900 were survivors ~ wow!

Met up with Gina but didn't catch Dawn for the survivors photo, it was a sea of pink ladies!

    LOL sorry Lisa, I don't tweet.  :-)

Want to try for 11:30 on Friday?

    Later, ladies!  {{hugs}}

Hi, Lisa.  I do Twitter but I had it for 2 years before I discovered a use for it.  Just as Twitter allowed the Egyptian Spring to happen earlier this year - even after the government took down the Internet there - Twitter helped the Wisconsin protesters stay in touch with rapidly changing events at the State Capitol.  But I admit that that is the only thing I use it for.

It seems to be good for people who have smart phones and tablet PCs, but I don't and will not any time soon.   So I use it for political updates - not much else.

Bluewillows -- When I did my radiation in the summer of 2007 - I used SWEEN CREAM vs that greasy Aquafor.  You can have the Walmart Pharmacy order it for you - its OTC (over the counter ) since they don't keep it on the shelves.  Yes you should apply sometime of product everyday when having radiation.  Its towards the end like week 4-5 that if a product isn't used - you will get very pink and red etc .  I barely got pink towards the end of my rads treatments.

I'm also from WISCONSIN =)  I live outside of Columbus - in a small village of Fall River. But travel freq to Madison. In fact my business is making Candy Bqts. And I wholesale candy bqts to UW Hsp Gift Shop as well as the Children's hsp.  Love to meet some of you ladies at a luncheon !

I don't come on here to often - but will keep an eye out now as to how the WISCONSIN Thread is doing. HUGS

Thought I might make it to Madison before starting chemo this Wednesday but it's not going to happen. Overwhelmed with thinking about getting everything ready. Plus, the elderly dog is sick and needs to go to the vet! Mary

vlnrph: so sorry about the sick doggy. And dont worry there will be other lunch meetups when you are more able to. attend

blondie: so glad your joining us !

I went to the CareWear shop today and got a hot pink FIght Like A Girl Tshirt so I will wear that on friday.  Double checked where Panera Bread is too, its right across the street from the SHELL gas station and right next to THE CENTURY HOUSE.

I saw my radiologist today and she confirmed the 6th week boost. Yucky, that means an extra week of driving with no A/C oin the July heat. But other then that she says so far so good:)

I won't be able to do a lunch meetup on Friday this week because I have way too much time out of the office already.  I still don't know when my radiation treatments will be, but I 'm hoping they start next week, and getting together should be a lot more feasible then.

How are y'all doing with the heat?  Lisa I know how you're doing with it - no AC - gaaaaaah!

Mary, good luck starting chemo on Weds.  The first one is the scariest because you don't know what to expect.  My 'chemo bag' included a paperback book, trail mix, a box of puffs with lotion.  Drink lots of water the day before to plump up your veins, and of course the day of and the day after to flush it from your system.

Lisa, hang tight and keep the windows down, the cooler weather is coming Thurs.

It's 5:30 which means it's time to go get ready for work.  {{hugs}} to all

Thanks badger: I had a port put in because we want to spare my veins and I hate needles.

Lisa, I still remember summer in central Indiana driving my '73 Nova using the 4 x 50 air conditioning system (roll down all four windows and drive fifty miles per hour). It felt like being in an oven. Maybe that's why I never volunteer for bake sales...

Some of my other friends find it amusing when I let them know our white miniature poodle takes Viagra three times a day. It's for pulmonary hypertension. He sees the animal cardiologist this afternoon because he started collapsing again over the weekend. His first chest x-ray for this condition was the same day I had the abnormal mammogram earlier this spring. So, we've been through a lot together. His days are numbered but I plan on being around for a while!

Good luck to everyone having treatment this week.

vlnrph - I hope your dog recovers, poor little guy. My dog was a big part of my treatment last year. He was my chemo pal: we walked every day, even when I didn't feel like it.

Had a good time at the Race for the Cure last Saturday. Over 12,000 participants, including over 900 survivors. It was quite overwhelming, emotionally. Saw badger but never did catch up with blondie45. I had a tough time keeping track of my group of 11.

I won't be able to join you all for lunch on Friday...maybe next time. Have fun!

    Hello Wisconsin Ladies!

I started to read through the pages of posts, but I ran out of time, so a quick introduction from me...

I live in Madison.  I'm treated by a great team of docs at UWCCC.  I've met wonderful people all along my journey.

I'll be back soon to read and post more!

Barbie: Welcome to the thread. Nice to meet you. You didnt have a profile signature, if you dont mind my asking what type of cancer did/do you ahve and what treatments have you done or are doing ? I hope your treatment plan whatever it is , is working well for you. I really love my UW team !

vlrnph: well thats definitely a new one for me in the grooming biz...never heard if Doggie viagra... LOL But we do whatever works for our furry family members, right? I hope things turn out okay for him.

I woke up at 3am today and couldt go back to sleep...was having some anxiety. So had my daughter ride to UW today to keep me awake. Rads were running 25 minutes behind schedule today and I had to get back to town here for an echocardiogram...so more anxiety about getting back in time or having to change appt until late July...which was not good since i found out that rads can interfere with the echo test and I will have much more radiation in me by then.

It has been an all around very emotionally, physically draining day. I will be so glad to have my good car thursday through next tuesday since it has a/c in it .
