Getting ready for second mastectomy (preventative) and bilateral reconstruction. Had Preop yesterday. Going to get the Vertebral Block anesthesia before surgery again. It really helped the pain first time around. Hoping it does again. 2 weeks to go.....a little nervous.

Hoping those of you in treatment are doing well. Hugs to you all.

Anyone that is in recovery phase doing Dragonboating? I tried in last fall with the BCA Ottawa group....what an awesome group of women, and I loved the boating! Had hope to be doing it this summer, will have to wait for next year.

Ladybug13  good luck.  Thats a big step.

Got some Muse bras today.  Can I wear them at 6 weeks post UMX?

Finally got my appointments.  End of that wait, now the anxiety to meet the docs and find out their suggestions.  Dr Esche and Dr Clemons.  Heard good things so far, and only want to hear good things.

    Hi everyone,

Good to see a few of us still on here. This thread seems to be either quite active or inactive.

Ladybug, just 2 weeks to go. Which reconstruction did you finally decide on? Trying to recall - lap....flap? Were you not also looking into DIEP? I understand the nervousness.. Mixed with a bit of excitement (best word I can think of too) I bet. Good luck and wishing you quick recovery with little pain. Please stay strict following doctors orders... To a tee.... The reconstruction has to heal. No lifting more than they say! No matter how good you feel.

Hello all.  Hope everyone is enjoying this snow free season....I wish the weather would just make up its mind.

Doing well.  I have a mammo in a couple of weeks.  I am a little nervous since I had my DIEP.  Hope it doesn't hurt to much.  As well, I hope all the scar tissue doesn't send them into a tail spin of suspicion.

I had another follow up with RO. My 'disease free' breast is tender with axilla lymph node tenderness. Mammogram done last November did not even mention the 'benign' nodules that were originally there. Since I am having DIEP in 1 week, I asked what would happen if the removed breast biopsy comes back positive? She said Hmmmmm. So I asked if an MRI could be done prior to surgery. I would hate to go through all this to find out the lymph nodes are affected!! But, on a positive note: maybe they are inflamed because allergy season is peaking for me right now ! Waiting for a call to have urgent MRI. Sigh.

Michelle: I hope everything is great for you!!!

Hi Ladies; I too am in Nepean. 2x mast in 2008 and just now undergoing reconstruction. Has anyone else gone with the one surgery option of expanders that stay in? Also, worried about hip pain - arthritis or bone mets?

Hello Puppymama, I think Rednin has had the implants you mentioned.  Red, you out there?

Ladybug, I'm doing well.  I went last night to shop for bras.  I couldn't find anything I liked.  Don't wnat anything to hard or with stiff under-wire.  Lots of them had firm push-up cups.  Not quite ready to wear those yet.  I think too, I just wasn't in the mood.  I looked old and haggard in the mirror, and my hair was a mess.  I think they need low mood lighting in those rooms to make you feel sexy.  It's hard to feel sexy with a scarred up chest and bags under your eyes.

    Hi Puppymama,

I have the one step saline/silicone implants. Nearly at the end of the filling process, its nice not to wear a prosthsis and to wear a normal bra even at this stage. The boob is slightly higher at the moment but ive been told it will drop.

    PM me for more info

    Hi everyone,

Had my first appts with my oncologists today. Found out that I will be going through chemo and radiation.  :-(  I was wondering if anyone has purchased a wig and where would be the best place to go.

     Thanks!

I got mine a Friedas it is on the corner of St. Laurent and Innes.  They were great.  Right next door is the mastectomy boutique I went to.

I met with my MO and RO this week. Hoping to start chemo next Friday.  Starting to worry about SE's and hairloss.  Friedas for wigs.  I need to look into our insurance to see.  I cant see me wearing a wig, but I guess I will know closer to the impending hailoss time.  The mastectomy boutique sells scarves/hats right?

Yes they do sell hats and scarves.  i only ever wore hats.  I hated how I looked in scarves.  I felt I looked like I had cancer.  I either looked like a Pierrette (sp), Gloria Swanson, or Aunt Jamima...not a good look for me.  I wore hats outside, because I did chemo in the winter, but most of the time I went baldo..I am so open about my cancer, I never minded if people stared or asked questions.  I guess it made me feel brave.  Chemo is not so bad.  It is much worse in your mind.  Before you know it you will be done.

My MRI of bilateral chest, lymphs, sternum and spine came back all clear! Yeah!

Now I have a date with Dr Watters and Dr Guay monday at the Civic. Keep me in your thoughts!!

Rachel, I hope you don't mind me asking. But as you are a stage 1 and your tumor is pretty small and you are ER positive, why did they decide you needed chemo? Did they say?

Ladybug, I have Guey and just love him.  He is so nice.  Some say he has terrible bed side manor.  He has always been wonderful to me.  He rushed to my side when there was a threat of loosing my DIEP.

I agree with michele dr guay is a star and always put his pxs first. For those who don't like him, well maybe they are expecting too much. I think when ur have a dr who knows his stuff and wants results, I've got someone good!

On the flip side girls.....my breast incision opened up yesterday. Good news is I was almost at the end of my expansion, so when I go see him on Wednesday it will be interesting to see what's the next stage now. I'm happy with the results so far.

For those of u who don't know I had 4 failed diep surgeries due to clotting and then finally an expander put in.

Thanks Michele I went to Frieda's on Friday to check things out and I have an appt with them on Wednesday, after my "Navigating Cancer" Session, to try some wigs on. I slipped into the Mastectomy Boutique as well and I saw this hat that I really loved. I didn't buy  but I think I should have.

@ Whatashocke.. My MO told me that had I been older like 65 she would have recommended only the Hormone therapy, but since I am 37 years old, she preferred being more cautious and given a short chemo treatment.

We told our children this morning about the cancer. It was extremely hard to watch my girls cry and cry but we spent a nice family day together and they seem to have come to terms with it. My youngest seemed to be the more worried about it, probably because she doesn't quite understand exactly what is going on. My oldest daughter knows a bit more about the disease, but just last week she had come hom from school telling me that one of her friends had to leave school early because she was going to two funerals, both relatives that had died from cancer, so of course this was fresh in her mind as we announced our news this morning. It was definitely a difficult morning.

Rachel11......my youngest was 13 when we told him. He has only had two othe cancer experiences, and hey died.. He has not been to school for a year now and is diagnosed with anxiety and depression. He did not want to leave me at home, was afraid it would take me when he was at school. If I can suggest, get psychology counselling or social work at the school to monitor your kids. It starts off very unsuspecting. He is doing better now, and we are hoping to get him to Back on Track school program with CHEO.

Red....hope they fix that up on Monday. I will be at preop for 6am....8am start. Put a good word in for me! Lol

I have to tell my kids about the Chemo tomorrow.  I am having a port put in on Tues.  Start chemo Friday.  We did tell them already prior to the mastectomy in March.  My kids are 8, 6, twins that are 3.  We havent had any other family members with cancer.  They only know Terry Fox.  My oldest was very concerned at that time, and his teacher keeps good communication with me. But of course I look fine now and they have no idea what is coming.  I worry about my oldest as he has trouble sharing.  But I guess it wouldnt hurt to get the school counsellor involved.

    We will get through.

    Hi Everyone,

Since chemo on April 5th, I have spent 13 out of 25 days in hospital. I got home today. I have had iv antibiotics since the 12th, and will continue to wear them until May 18th. I have febrile neutropenia and cellulites. I will also have the privilege of giving myself shots for 7 days between each chemo.

I have fat neurosis in both breasts and don't know what will happen once my treatment is done. I have chemo, herceptin and radiation.

I am so grateful that I have a good medical team. And the staff at the hospital are wonderful.

This is just an update. I'm quite tired and have to get some zzzs.

Good luck with everything. Take care.
