Nope, me on the right with black snood, Karen on the left with cute cap.

It's a good thing I can see the pics on Facebook because I can't see them here.

Great picture! I'm so glad you two were able to get together!

Eema - Good to hear from you. Hoping everything turns out well.

I survived my apartment move, though I've unpacked less than half of my boxes (a good number of them are books...) I'm literally around the corner from my shul now, and I'm hoping that prompts better attendance.

Hi ladies. Thought I'd check back and see how everyone is doing. And maybe some new sisters will find us here.

I am looking forward to the holidays this year. I made it, and I have a lot to be thankful for and a lot to look forward to. Hoping my nephew, along with my sister, will be able to join me again for some of the services. I just saw him last weekend at my cousin's wedding, and he is such a great kid (about 16 months).

    Hi ladies

I'm going into hospital for a reconstruction on Tuesday - very nervous. Just thought I'd pop by and say hi before I go in (which may be tomorrow late afternoon).

It should be only for good, rebzamy! Refuah shelayma!

Hi girls, been too long. I will post an update soon.

Leah, do you know, if we move back to Israel, as citizens who have been away awhile.. Do we have to pay a fine before we get health care? Like 9k NIS? We want to go back, but that would make it more difficult.

    Hi all!

Eema, I've never heard of anyone paying a fine like that. Probably the best thing to do is contact Nefesh B'Nefesh or the Jewish Agency since they'll have reliable information. I'm so glad to here you want to come back!

RebzAmy, I'm also going in for recon soon - prophy mx on remaining side with TE placement on Sept. 5. Yes, 12 days before Rosh Hashana. My kids are already planning how to deal with the holiday with Ima not cooking - though I will make my honeycakes before the surgery and freeze them. Best of luck with your surgery. What is your name for daveniing?

    Hi ladies

I got sooo excited when I saw this thread. You see, I'm not Jewish by birth, but I believe I have a Jewish heart. I love G-D, and I love Israel, and all Jewish people around the world.

I Love HIS ways, and HIS word!

I'm a Christian, who has been taught about Jehovah and His cherished people. I want to know HIM and you so much more.

I was diagnosed on July 27, 2012. I'm scheduled for surgery on October 22, and trying to get funding right now for arimidex. My husband started a new job recently, and I won't be covered again until oct.1.

    Shalom

Amy...will be thinking of you during your surgery...and yes, please let us know what your hebrew name is....

Eema....so exciting to think that you might be moving back "home" to Israel......there are many reasons why making aliyah at this point in time is not right for me, but I soooo want to be in Israel.....I am trying to figure out how to get there over winter break....but definitely next summer....my DH is not fond of making aliyah, but when we retire (8 years till our youngest DD is out of college!!!), he has promised me that we can spend a month in Israel 2 oe 3 (maybe 4 if I push my luck) times a year.....I love when I'm in Israel...of course it is vacation time for me when I'm there!!!!  My first time in Israel was in 2007, my "celebration" trip one year post chemo!!!  and I've been lucky to be there 3 more times since then...

Leah...wish I could bring you a meal....I had such a great time with you and your family....

Rachel.....hope your sister will be with you for the holidays....thinking that I best get my act together and invite people for Rosh Hashanna....my Dd and SIL will be in Denver for the 1st days of Succot!!!  I'm so lucky that they come to Denver for Sukkot and Pesach....my kids live in Toronto and my SIL is a native of Toronto with lots of family...

Solteria....I lived in the Columbus area for 15 years......and my DH is a native of Columbus, but we have been in Colorado for going on 27 years....

I went back to work for the 2012-2013 school year last monday....my DD#2 started grade 9!!!  where has the time gone...my son has also started college classes again....looking forward to when he graduates and supports himself...

Went to visit my folks a coule weeks ago...will tell you more about it another time....

    Hugs to everyone....Karen

    Thank you for your reply.

My church feels that our mandate is to the Jews. NOT to convert them, but to help them to make Aliya. We actually have a meeting room in our church for The Ebenezer Project, which helps Jews from all over the world to make Aliya. My pastor and his wife are the first chairpersons of the Great Lakes Region.

I regretfully have never been to Israel, though my sister has been 3 times.

I know this thread is for Jewish ladies, but I was so happy to find you.

Eema I'm so happy for you that you get to make Aliya.

    Blessings

    Dear Jewish Warrior Sisters,

May I please ask you a question about 2 delicious foods I loved to eat while I was a student in Israel in 1978 (before some of you may have been born!). I've craved them over the years and  haven't found either.

The first is something I  would buy at a bakery in the Old City (Jerusalem).  It tasted like a cross between cheese cake and angel food cake.  It was a tall, light but dense cake that tasted like it had a mild cheese in it--sooooo  delicious!  The other is a blueberry blintz that a woman made for me while I  worked on a Kibbutz in Galilee ( I have fond memories of pruning banana leaves while living there :). If  any of you have a Jewish recipe for these desserts or a deli where I could find them in So. California, I'd be very grateful.

    Toda Raba!

Welcome to all the new sisters. There is also a Misheberach thread if you would like to add your name; or let me know if it's time to take yours off (hoping that's a lot of you).

Joanne - I hope someone is able to post those recipes. They sound wonderful. I have a basic blintz recipe that can be used with any filling. I am not a big cook, but when I have an occasion, I try to make the blintzes.

Rebzamy - Good luck with your reconstruction!

Eema - Looking forward to an update. Hope all is well.

Paula - Thanks for joining in. I've heard of projects similar to the Ebenezer project.

Leah - Sending you good thoughts also for your recon.

    Hi again Ladies

Eema, Rachel, Leah and Karen thanks so much for your wishes. My hebrew name is Rivkah (ben Gavriel).

My reconstruction was shockingly cancelled hours before I was due to go to the hospital. My surgeon broke his hand. I was completely shocked to be told so last minute as I was all geared up having gone through all the emotions etc - plus doing my hair, my legs and making myself look and feel good LOL only to be told this! Anyway I'm ok now but it took a while for me to get my head around it all. Waiting now to hear about a new date.

Leah hope all goes well and smoothly for you and sounds as if you're going to be well looked after.

RebzAmy - I can understand how frustrated you must be! There's so much mental preparation for that, and it's a shame you have to wait now. Is there another surgeon in the practice you trust, or do you have to wait for your PS to heal?

Joanne - I'll try to post it over the weekend.

I haven't been here for a while. As you know, my Husband and I have his and hers cancers and while I have been declared cured by my onc, and I hope she is right, my Husband is not doing well. So far every treatment has failed and we are running out of options - now we are down to clinical trials and hope and pray that something will finally work.

Another possibility we're considering is treatment in Israel and we are getting medical records together to send to Dr. Shimon Slavin to see if he can do anything to help.

Leah, have you heard of Dr. Slavin and has he treated and helped anyone y ou know? My oncologist told me that he is internationally well thought of and his treatment quite legitimate. The possible treatments he outlined are different from what my husband has been getting so far but of cause he cannot he cannot suggest anything until he reviews my Husband's medical records.

So, we're calling SK every other day to see what is holding up the records and are in a waiting mode and hoping for the best. Please keep us in your prayers.

Thanks Rachel. I also got in touch with a Chinese herbalist, Dr. Wong. I met him yesterday and he is seeing my husband today. As to the Israel option, we're still waiting for the SK to release the medical records.

Joanne - Here it is (from Jewish Cooking: Traditional Recipes for the Contemporary Cook)

    Ingredients

Batter: 1 cut flour; pinch of salt; 2 large eggs; 1/2 cup milk; 1/2 cup water; 2 tsps flavorless oil; butter and oil for frying; 6-inch diameter omelet or crepe pan with rounded sides.

Filling: 1 1/2 cups dry cottage chees or other soft white cheese mixed with 2 tbsps light cream or an egg yolk; 1 tsp sugar; pinch of salt. (I sometimes will use pie filling instead)

Stir the flour and salt into a bowl. Make a well, drop in eggs and flavorless oil and stir in surrounding flour. Gradually add milk and water until smooth. Beat with a whisk until the surface is covered in tiny bubbles. Leave the batter for a half hour.

To make the pancakes, stir the batter well and pour into a jug. It should be the consistency of light cream - add water if too thick.  Put the pan on medium heat for 3 minutes and drop in a teaspoon of oil and swirl it around the base and side of the pan. Wipe out excess oil with a paper towel, then smear the surface of the pan with butter (using another paper towel). Pour in a thick layer of batter and swirl it around so it covers the sides and base of the pan. Pour the excess back in the jug. You should have a blintz so thin that by the time the sides start to curl away from the pan, the bottom is slightly brown. Turn the pancake out onto a sheet of wax paper covering a wooden board (I use regular plates and they come out okay...). Re-butter the pan and repeat until the batter is used up. The pancakes should be stacked brown side up. They can now be filled, frozen, or refrigerated overnight.

To stuff, place a blintz brown side up on a board or counter. Spread a tablespoon of filling thinly over the bottom half, turn in the sides and roll into a long thin roll. Repeat with each pancake.

Heat 1/4 cup butter and 2 teaspoons of oil in a wide frying pan. As soon as the butter stops foaming, put in the blintzes, seam side up.  Cook for 3 minutes until golden brown, turn and cook the second side.

Enjoy! I hope you enjoy them.

What is everyone doing for Rosh Hashanna?   We are invited out the first night....I am bringing cookies for dessert (my speciality).  We have company both days for lunch...first day a young couple and another family on the 2nd day......so not too many people....Was going to start cooking today, but just could not motivate myself to do anything (was not a good day for me)....so thursday, friday and next sunday will be busy cooking days...the baking is easy for me to figure out...round sweet challah, honey cake (I have an amazing recipe) and my late grandmothers nut cake....its the main courses that I have to figure out....I guess I need to crack open one of my cookbooks.....

My DD and SIL are coming for the 1st days of Sukkot so we will also entertain then...so far we have company for the 1st day of sukkot lunch...waiting to hear back on other people....my SIL has some denver people who he is related to some what distantly that he would like to have a meal with...I planted the seed, so we'll see what happens.....

Hoping Leah is doing well post surgery.....She's been in my thoughts....as is everyone else here.  Karen
