Eema - Glad to hear that. And at least you'll have someone watching those liver spots.

Eema....so happy to hear the good news.....

Rachel...how are you feeling?  its about 2 weeks post your last chemo....are you seeing any peach fuzz on your head?

No peach fuzz yet - but I never completely shaved, so I have a number of whisps of 2-inch hairs already, but way too spread out to go commando. My hairdresser didn't want to shave me when she came over 'in case you don't really lose your hair,' and when I realized some were hanging in there, I didn't want to shave them off for the sake of being able to go bald in public. It gives me a headstart regardless.

I'm feeling pretty good. I get tired and have to remind myself not to try to move at my usual speed. But thank G-d, I have weathered this storm so much better than it could have been, and I keep counting my blessings.

I signed up as a "virtual participant" in the 2nd Komen Israel Race for the Cure to be held on May 3rd (my DD's 26th b'day).  I walked the inaugural race with Leah_S and her DH and my DD in October 2010....I look forward to walking the race again in Israel in the near future....

Hey, my birthday is May 3rd also! And so is my neice! I was 33 when she was born, and she's turning 17, so I'll let the rest of you figure out the math... ;)

I remember growing up my mother used to have parties for Israel Independence Day (she's Israeli) and they tended to always coincide with my birthday. Funny, I haven't thought about that in a long time...

On the morning of the Salute to Israel Parade in NYC, June 3, there's a 4-mile race in Central Park that my husband and I are thinking of doing, the Celebrate Israel Run. Last year I marched in the parade with my synagogue, and I think I still had one of my two drains in from my UMX. Funny, I don't remember much from that summer, feels like a million years ago, but I know I did it, even though the memory is somewhat vague. We'll probably stay overnight in the city if we're doing the race, then hopefully connect with the people from our shul and join them in the parade. Then our annual shul dinner dance is that evening. It's going to be a jam-packed day!

Shabbat Shalom to all!  I had my 5th of 6 chemos today - I am 83.33% done!  We received a Shabbat meal via my temple's Helping Hands program and it should last us for a few days. I am grateful for this help when I am tired during the week after chemo.

    Thank you Karen!

And Happy Yom HaAzmaut to everyone! Tonight we're going to friends for their annual dinner and learning in honor of Yom HaAzmaut, and tomorrow we're doing what most Israelis do - Barbecue time!

OK, I know Eema was thinking of coming sometime after Pesach, and I think someone else too, so please let me know when you'll be here so we can meet up.

Karen, are you going to bein the same learning program you were in last year when you come this summer?

My son will be going to Israel in August for the year at a mechina in the Golan.  After that he wants to join the IDF.  I will likely visit him sometime during the winter.  Haven't been to Israle in 30 years.  I hear it has changed!

I am so very sad now. My favorite aunt passed away last Sunday. She didn't have an easy life - she was divorced twice and barely managed to make ends meet. She moved to Hawaii about 25 years ago and loved it there. She worked for a number of years until retirement age and then moved into senior housing. She had a tiny 1-room apartment and all she would talk about was how one wall was floor-to-ceiling window with a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. She didn't see a tiny apartment and an income that was only Social Security, she saw "big enough for me" and a view that was priceless.

It's comforting for me to know that the last part of her life she was so happy.

In Pirkei Avot it says, "Who is rich? He who is happy with what he has". My aunt died a truly rich woman.

I just came across this while looking for Bar/Bat Mitzvah gifts. Not sure what I think. Thoughts?

Um.... NO. Give a beautifully designed tzedakah box as a gift, or make a donation to an organization, or do both... just don't emblazon the organization name and/or cause across the gift that's supposed to be artwork. That's just tacky in my opinion.

Oh, I wasn't considering it for the gift (it's for a boy anyway). It is pretty tacky.

Sorry I missed this earlier... so sorry for your loss, Leah. But it sounds like she lived a full and happy long life, and that is a good memory to keep.

Rachel, I thought you were asking in general about the tzedakah box, which is what I was answering. I didn't realize you were actually shopping for a gift! Guess I haven't been paying attention much on this thread lately...

    Hi Sisters,

BDE, Leah.  Sorry for your loss.

I just had hernia surgery yesterday--got the hernia as another gift from the Cancerific fairies--it happens after hyst/oophs., but the upshot of it is that I can't go to Israel now because of it.  No lifting for a while.  Next surgery is June 12.  Another one I"m looking forward to==fix my broken booby and lipo my tushy (or love handles!).  Soon I will be all back together again, except without the cancer:).

    LOVE YOU GIRLS!

Hello, everyone!  I hope you don't mind if I join this group.  Smile At the Bar Mitzvah we just wrote a check in a multiple of 18 for "chai".   I figured that way he could also buy what he wanted without getting a gift that was too traditional or not traditional enough by family preference.  Reading this thread reminded me that my daughter's Bat Mitzvah is supposed to be the first week of June, right around the time I will most likely be having surgery.  I'm sure the Rabbi will postpone it for awhile, and my daughter will not mind because she is still struggling to learn the Hebrew anyway.  I am so excited for tomorrow!  I am going to the synagogue and the Rabbi is going to pray over me for healing and annoint my head with oil.  I've lost track of the counting of the Omer, hee hee

First of all, a very Happy Mothers Day to all of you who are mothers. I hope the quiet on this thread means everyone has been living their lives a little more normally. I know I've been spending less time on BCO.

I went to a Bar Mitzvah yesterday of the son of an acquaintance from my synagogue. At the luncheon afterwards, I got to speak with another congregant who, shortly before my dx, was dx'd with non-hodgkins lymphoma. She had always been very friendly to me, so I had sent a get-well card after my dx and we corresponded a few times while we were going through treatment. Yesterday was the first time we saw each other since our dx's. As always, it was good to get to talk with someone else who really understands. Hopefully we're both on our way to full recoveries (hers was Stage 4 by the time they found it).

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
