I wonder if your age is why they are being so reluctent to order a mammogram?  If your gut is telling you there is something there, I would go with it...even if I had to pay out of pocket.

My husband is worried about me being worried about it. I don't like upsetting people or naffing them off but I think I need to oh jimminy cricket I could scream.  I can't take the burning feeling it is like white hot but not constant.  My daughter tickled me under my armpits this evening and I have never cried so much as my goodness it was soooooo painful my armpits were throbbing it wasn't her fault. I think I will take hubby or a a chaperone with me to the doctors and get it sorted, I shall go on Thursday when my usual GP is off - if no joy then private.  Thank you for your help all of you I am in such a pickle :(

Good. Hopefully you will get some answers and some relief.  Just remember you can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself as well.  Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Wilson the pain and itchyness sound very similar to shingles although with shingles you do get blisters.

I have to say my daughter has got shingles at the moment, but I have no blisters - it was just my nipple that was itchy now it is the area around it and burning on the top of my breast just still on one of them.  Could be something to mention to the doctor.  I will let you know and keep you updated, thaank you all for your support

OK bit the bullet and went to ask another doctors opinion whilst sobbing my heart out feeling I had let my doctor down.  It isn't shingles :( Something in me really wished it was.  I am now on the wait to see if I meet the criteria for a scan or mammogramme!?!?! Criteria, so if you don't have a lump you can't get a mammogramme?  I am now deeply confused and await to hear from my GP to see what is going to happen.

ok so the doctor called me back trying me to try the creams again because there was no outward sign or feeling of heat or colour change. So after a long day of waiting we ddecided I have tried all the creams possible and to stick with the oil of primrose and amatripyline and she is going to refer me to a specialist who will then decide if a scan or mammogramme will be necesarry now I am in such a state because I have to fight for something I know doesn't feel right.  I am not thinking I am dying but know something isn't right and am sobbing because they think it is in my head. It is uncomfortable, and burns and my nipple is still itchy but not as itchy.  Have I done wrong because I feel I have :(

Goodness no, you haven't done wrong!  Even if it turns out to be in your head (I don't think it is) you have every right and responsibility to make sure of your health.  Good docs will understand this.  You can do it.  Keep going until your mind is at ease.  Strength and hugs.

She is going to refer you to a specialist… that is good news. and if that specialist finds nothing wrong then look for a different specialist. I can tell you many stories of young women under 40 having to fight because they get the "too young to have a mammogram" bull. You will get to the bottom of this.

Thank you so much - I have been looking at other things that may not be cancer related and can see where the doctor was going, thinking I had cyclical breast pain. I am disgusted I have to fight every step of the way.  Will see what happens and how long I have to wait for my appointment to come through. Thank you again for your warmth and support x

Breast has been a little less painful today but my goodness my under arms on both sides are hurting me, it's like when my arms are down I have 2 ping pong balls 1 under each armpit but my left one is worse. Is it related or am I just being extremely paranoid about everything now?

If you are having pain on both sides this doesn't sound like a breast cancer issue. It might be an infection. But remember I'm no doctor. It might be your lymph nodes are swollen and fighting off something.

Be sure to write everything down so when you see the doctor you don't forget.

wilson33:  OMG!  This is why I have and pay for my own private insurance and don't use an HMO.  It sounds like in the UK you are at the mercy of doctors and they take their own sweet time with you.  I would be screaming to the rooftops..they would give me a mammo to get rid of me!  Have you even been offered a course of antibiotics in case it's an infection?

I feel so bad that you are having to go through this when all you should have to do is call up and see a breast specialist and get a mammo or at least a thermogram (do they do those in the UK?)  That wouldn't happen in the USA because if a doctor treated a patient that way and then it turned out they had advanced bc, the doctor would have a liability issue, so they rule everything out, even if it means more testing than necessary.

I pray you get that testing soon.  What a terrible thing to have to go through and still take care of a family on a day to day basis.

Kaara, what can I say the doctors feel if you don't tick the boxes then it can't be (hoping it isn't) but I have been told it's nothing serious.  I have had 2 sorts of anti biotics (unfortunately I am alergic to penacylin and trimethaprim) before all this kicked  off for an ear infection that wouldn't shift. I am waiting for an appointment to come through but don't know if my doc says I can go or not only time will tell.  I am sure I could get a kick a** lawyer if things work oout for the worst.  I am doing everything else in the meantime to rule out as many options as possible as I shall sit at the hospital and not move until I am happy - if I get there!!  I don't know if we do thermograms here.  I have been looking into private care and not sure how it works or what I have to pay I just don't know.

Prayers are always welcome and if the kids didn't keep me busy I would be doing my nutt.  What happened with you? Was it a fight for you to get seen?

Hi Wilson, I'm British too so I know how intensely frustrating the NHS can be and it's not so easy to just change your GP if you're unhappy. If there's another doctor in the practice it may be worth saying you want a second opinion? Really feel for you and hope you get an answer to this soon.

Thank you Amy_V I have had a second opinion but my regular doctor is second in command there and her say is the final say. I am looking at bupa but not sure how it all works becuae I have never got this frustrated before.  I am calling the doctor on thursday the one who referred me.  I can only call her on Thursday as that is when my original doctor is off.  I might have to switch doctors alltogether and that is a move I don't want to do :( I am confused and frustrated that I am not being heard Yell

OK spoke with the reception at the doctors and a referal has gone through to leicester glenfield hospital, so just waiting to hear from them.  We have mobile units that go round places doing screening but guess what here in the UK you have to be over 50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am getting more and more concerned the more I read on the internet, so I am not going to do that and sorry if I sound lame.  I know something isn't right, I know it isn't in my head and I also know in my gutt there is nothing serious I don't know why I just do.  You all have been so supportive and can't thank you all enough

Keep at it wilson till they get to the bottom of this. Yes the Internet is scary. Use the Internet as a source to ask questions not to self diagnose.

wilson:  So glad you have your referral...remember to fight for your rights!  Don't let them push you around or dismiss you until you are satisfied with a dx.  All the best to you...sending prayers and positive energy that all will be ok!

I'm glad you are being persistant.  No offense to my British sisters, but there are times I'm glad I'm in the US.  This wouldn't happen here - you would get treated, even without insurance, and yes, the fear of lawsuits is probably the reason.

I hope they get to the bottom of it - it doesn't sound like breast cancer to me but it does sound like it could be a nerve problem, the way it hurts.  Good for you for being persistant and keep it up.  The one thing I know, in any system (and I work for the government) is people will help you if you keep calling and showing your face.  Either they do it because they want you to stop calling or because they feel bad for you - either way, the squeaky wheel does get the grease! Call and cry a lot, you'll get somewhere!

    Wanted to respond to Wilson,

My story is that I had a red flaky nipple and went to the dr. and was given cream for eczema. The cream did not help and I moved to another city and waited for months to get in with a new dermatology doctor for other issues. Asked for more cream, but was given a scrape biopsy. A week later I was called and told I had Paget's. I didn't even have the pain and itching, just the rashly look on my nipple.

I noticed you are from the UK and not sure about how your health care system works. The issue as I see it is that you need to become your own health care advocate. I could have been diagnosed earlier if I had taken care of myself and found a new doctor immediately after moving. Without the skin biopsy, I would have not realized what I had. My mammogram and ultrasound were clear.

The scrape biopsy is not as painful as one would think. Just think of the piece of mind this would give you. Your health is more important than someone's feelings. Take care and blessings to you.

I have had a really bad couple of days with the burning behind my nipple, come you appointment! I hate waiting games, I am patient enough to look after children with special needs but why am I not patient when it comes to waiting for things for myself? I have brought myself a cross stitch and going to deliberately keep myelf busy.  So blooming tired

wilson  don't kid yourself. We have the same problem here in the US. Good doctors always have a line out the door. My BS is booked up for 3 months. If its an emergency they do get you in on a cancellation or squeeze you in somewhere but otherwise you have to wait. A week isn't bad at all for a specialist.

When I needed to see a dermatologist for a rash (my onc was concerned) they wanted me to wait 2 months. I managed to get an appointment in a month but by then the rash had resolved so I ended up canceling.
