LMBO @ Binney and your cork tossing.  I had to use the search button to find out what I'd missed.  I thought you might be trying out for a new Olympic sport.  I guess I should take corks with me when I walk because I keep forgetting the pedometer.

    Congrats on losing 5 lbs.

Carol, good to see you are healing and giving yourself time to heal.

Becky, I think we'd all love to join you to the dam.  Do you have any pics of it?

hugz - "Drop the fork" ... Laughing  I actually haven't eaten much today ... so I need to pick up the fork ... and then I'll give you 20 fist pumps before bed, ok?  Wink  I actually took a group of kids out to a beautiful national park ... and I got in tons of fresh air.  It's been a good day.Kiss

Carol - you're being wise and it sounds like a good plan!

Binney - Wahoooooo on the 5 lbs!  It's definitely time to up the cork count. Cool   The shopping with the dogs, with the kids ... kind of gives me a headache thinking about it.  You're a saint.  Instead of googling 'training for a 5k' and finding links like, "Couch to 5k in six weeks" ... you could have a link, "Corks to 5k in six weeks."  lol!  So very creative!  Love it.

Hey Binney--I was just thinking last  night that you had not weighed in on this thread with your cork counting.  I envisioned you totally buried under  huge pile of corks and unable to post!  Good on the weight loss.  I know how hard it is!  Keep it up.  Were you tossing corks at all of the shopping venues?

Marple--I wish I could have all of you out for a walk at the dam.  The views of the mountains are spectacular.  I will take a pic and TRY to put on here.  Carol you will have to help me!

Carol--Hurry up and heal.  You are my exercise partner and I do not like it when you cannot match or overtake me!

Dawne--"Group of Kids" and "National Park" sounds like movement to me

Ohio and Gma--I admire you two as you keep trying to move despite adversities.  Keep it up.  Ohio- I kept thinking of the fun we had at the Ohio LE Summit when I was at the LLN in Atlanta last week.  Wish you all could have been there.

Hugz--Our cheerleader.  Keep up the encouragement.  I think this thread may have died out long ago if it were not for you.

I completed five miles out at the dam yesterday.  The weather was perfect.  I have to work today so will do short times on the recumbent bike that is set up at my work site.  I am also presenting some of my  NLN findings at our support group meeting tomorrow so have to finish getting ready for that.

Dawne...Glad you appreciated the "drop the fork" comment and good for you on those fist pumpsLaughing. But.... I am really even more excited that you got to go to a National Park and enjoy the outdoors. Which park?  I am partial to National parks! Mount Rainer. WA. is very beautiful in the wild flower season. I have done much hiking there pre BC. Now the altitude scares me off a bit. I miss it so. I once hiked there upto 10,000 ft in the summer and skied down. That was fun.

Did a really good fast walk for 40 minutes today. LOVED IT, as the sun was out and I just needed a light hoody.Cool

Binney, You must have been busy getting CORKED to lose all that weight! I am green with envy.Wink Binney, IKEA is a workout in itself. If you go up each isle I bet you could clock in 10,000 steps easily.

Becky. So nice to hear that you are involved in a support meeting still. Regarding the dam walks. Do you have to dress up much this time of the year or can you do a hoody. I hate feeling bulky and then having to layer off. I will be in rain gear up until April aprox. but today was special as no rain just pure sunshine.Cool

Binney, I am jealous of that weight loss!

Today I walked 4.6 miles, getting where I needed to be, including a lot of speedy walking in downtown Chicago where it is quite cool. No sign of rebound leaking! I see my surgeon tomorrow and expect to get a green light for weight lifting again.

    Keep moving, everyone!

Saw my family doctor today. My cholesterol and LDL is climbing since starting Aromasin. I bargained for four months to try bring the levels down or it's back on cholesterol meds. I was on meds a year ago but those were discontinued during chemo.

So - - tomorrow I'm going to try and start my day with the treadmill. I'm thinking I need to turn my day around and get some exercise in before the knees get upset.

Always something and, again, diet and exercise is the answer.

Okay, will get a good night's sleep and have a new attitude in the morning.

Went to my ENT today.  My hearing is worse "but after all, you're getting older" :swear: and I need new hearing aids. But the high point was the exercises the doctor gave me.  Do 'em for 1/2 per day and they should help with the vertigo. Sigh.  I'm already walking 15000 steps everyday and do 1/2 hour of stretching.  I'm going to need more hours in my day.

Hugz--Weather now only requires a light jacket.  I don't mind the layering though.  I have a friend living on Whidbey Island right on Puget Sound.  Are you in that area of the country?  It is so beautiful there.  I used to visit her a lot but have not been there in awhile.

I have a support group meeting today--my therapist and I are presenting about our NLN conference learnings.  It is a noon meeting.  If not raining afterward I hope to get out to the dam.  Otherwise I will face one of the machines here at home.

Binney- I have to ask.  Where are you getting all of the corks?  Have you ever run out?

    Great news, Carol!

I've been  doing some ' fast walking' about 5x a week along with the MLD exercises ( not much faith in my handout instructions though)
But this morning, I noticed the fingers on my ' good' arm ( right) were more swollen. I did do exercise -walking last night to a video but I wore my Isotoner gloves on both hands.

I am wondering- I feel like the MLD is  channeling fluid into the right arm. ( isnt this the purpose in a sense ?)
Getting a little concerned about bitlateral.  This may be the wrong place  post/ sorry.

MLD, 2 mile run, and Lebeds this morning.  We were at our mountain cabin this weekend so I got lax about the Lebeds, but we did do a 6 mile mountain hike so that really got the system pumping.  I started using hiking poles a couple of years ago after slippping on a snow covered rock and falling hard on my LE wrist.  No break or sprain thankfully, but it scared me enough to invest in poles (OK, I'm your basic klutz).  But after using the poles for a while, I found they really help the LE.  Fluid used to pool in my hands and lower arm when I hiked, but now the poles keep that from happening.  I find I don't even have to wear a sleeve/gauntlet any more when hiking.  My former LE therapist who went to one of those inpatient LE clinics in Germany for training said that part of the patients' treatment there is to require a lot of daily walking, and they issue poles to all of the patients to use when walking as it seems to help.  So I unknowingly was  getting some therapuetic value out of using my poles. Cool

Hi all from the Jersey coast.  Well I may never feel the same about anyone named Sandy again, no offense

lost power last Monday and still not back on as yet and it is a week later, getting nippy at night and new storm forcast for tomorrow

good news is my gym has power and is only 1/2 from my house so have been going there for heat, shower and such.  Getting in plenty of cardio and weight training

dumped all the food last week, do not want to attack animals to my deck

yeaper, I live near the Raritan bay and less than 20 miles from the ocean.  We got it full blast last week.  2 of my pals have lost houses completely, part of my town is still under water and FEMA is the new man in town

It is totally unbelievable unless you were in NO during Katrina.

But will get past it all, we Jersey folks are tough!

but now the poles keep that from happening.

    How?!

Purple - good question - I never really thought of it before, but I suspect that when hiking without poles, I tended to swing my arms and centrifugal force and gravity pushed fluid down towards the hand.  When holding the poles, my arms stay at more of a 90 degree angle rather than dangling down.  Also, as I grip the poles and navigate over various terrain such as underfoot rocks, uphills/downhills, over creeks, etc. my grip changes with the needs of the moment, meaning that my hands are constantly flexing, and that moves fluid. Also, I think the pumping motion of the arms as I hike keeps fluid moving as well.  Just guesses!

Proud - hooray for getting power back!  Hot food and a hot shower after a long power outage seems like heaven, doesn't it?

Mary, it feels like Christmas to come home and see lights around the neighborhood

I have to say my terrific neighbors who checked on me were life savers!  I have a balance /walking problem and so glad they were there to help me

off to...a nice red pinot noir now!

hope that some will contribute to the funds for rebuilding the coast as entire towns are gone.  Did you hate the dumb Jersey Shore TV show?  not to worry as Seaside Hights the town....gone

Proudtospin, Glad to hear you made it thru. We were wondering who was affected by the storm.  I am glad that all your neighbours banded together. Smile

Pole walking or known as nordic pole walking is fabulous for LE. Years ago when it came to the west coast I took an instructors course and poled quite a bit.  Lately I pick them up and occasionaly use them. How stupid of me not to get back into the routine of using them. They are fantastic for LE. Because you keep you arm from dangling down, plus you pump your fist and pull back as you stride.

Did I mention the extra calories you burn and the toned arms to beat! When you pull back your arms as you stride you work lots of muscles  I just gotta get them out again. My brand is Exerstrider which is extremely light aluminum. They are telescopical so traveling with them is a breeze.

Youtube,  Exerstrider Tom Rutlin for a demo on how to. Remember don't move your elbow and pick away. Keep your elbow bent close to 90 degrees and pull back like your sawing wood. I find if I am talking and poling with a friend I forget to keep elbow in proper posistion and end up using it. It's not the elbow that does the work its your shoulder. Picking away with your elbow is not using the proper techique and won't work your upperbody as much or burn the calories.

I know that doing cardio at the gym ... elyptical vs. walking on the treadmill ... the elyptical is better for the swelling in my fingers.  I'm sure it's because of the angle that my arm is at when I'm on the elyptical.  When I walk, I try to keep my arms at 90 ... but I tend to forget ... old habits die hard.  Undecided

I'm really excited to get the poles.

Proudtospin, as someone who spent the first 28 years of my life in NJ, my heart broke to see the see the beaches totally swept away. I cried watching videos taken from the helicopter. I grew up going to Manasquan and Pt. Pleasant as a child, and later discovered the beauty of Island Beach State Park and the wonderful zaniness of Seaside as a young adult. In my early 30's after moving to PA, I went back and took friends who had never heard of these places. I later returned with my husband to show him Pt. Pleasant and we spent the day there. I have only seen brief clips of the stupid TV show, and in no way did they capture my experience or memory of the area. I am glad you are safe and have heat and power again. I will be thinking of you and hope the coming storm has minimal impact.

Compliance with self care, but no exercise to report. I still am moving things around the house, carrying things out to car and organizing. I hope that counts for something, but I haven't worn my pedometer the last few days. I really should, as I might be getting in more steps than I think and wouldn't feel so guilty!

I am going to look up the pole walking, sounds good to me.

The coast looks so bad since the storm, I have pals dealing with Fema to see if they will get any help.   some think they may not be allowed to rebuild.  Pt Pleasant and Jenkinsons! so much fun there, and Toms River is bad.  I used to hang out a lot at Sandy Hook and eat seafood at Bahrs after cycling....they never seemed to care how stinkie I was !  It makes me want to cry!

Tina, I would say walking back and forth to your car and doing that organizing is for sure exercise. I bet you are even pooped after a day of that! You probably fall into bed like a rock after all that work.

Carol. I see your doing well. How is the surgery for healing?

Well after a day of downpour it is sunny here so no excuse for me today! Well... actually I put my big girl panties on and dressed in rain gear yesterday and did the boardwalk. I had to hang everything up to dry but I really did enjoy my walk even though my glasses we full of raindrops and I could barely see!

    Proudtospin,

Best wishes for all that you must take care of, and to your friends and family, too. Try not to neglect your LE care, even as priorities take you elsewhere.

Hugz, good work putting on the big girl panties!

I am doing quite well post minor surgery, healing well and have green light for walking as fast and as long as I like, just need to be conservative about aggressive upper torso work. So yesterday I walked 6.5 miles, getting some holiday shopping done at one of those really spread out outlet centers, which is located 5 minutes from where I hopped off the train from the big city.

Today, I am traveling by air, and Tina and I had plans to have dinner, but we have been outwitted by the big storm coming and decided to stay safe and avoid being out on nasty roads when freezing rain arrives. Drat! Because it is always fun to chat in person with a sister in swell!

Proud, my little disappointment is nothing compared to your getting a storm after Sandy. I hope you do well through this one.

    Carol

Proud--I am happy to hear you will be warm and toasty tonight.

Purple--One of the therapist's I know was encouraging me to get poles as she said the pumping action often helps LE.  I went hiking with my therapist last week and she encouraged me to take one pole as we would be climbing over a lot of rocks.  It was a lifesaver.  The leaves were so thick it was slippery and I could use the pole to keep from slipping.  I am right handed and my LE is in my right arm.  I used the pole with my right arm most of the time and it did not affect it at all.  My measurements were the same that night.  I am now going to buy some.

Cold and dreary here.  Treadmill yesterday and today.  Tomorrow is supposed to be more outdoor weather.  Guess you cannot use poles on the treadmill! lol

Becky, the lol is on you be.......cause.........you can use you're poles on a treadmill! You just have to be careful and have a long belt on your treadmill. A short belt will not allow you the proper extension and you will get caught up in the treadmill.

Again if you get poles make sure they are aluminum such as Exerstriders brand. No, I do not have shares in the company! :) I like them because they have no strap but yet stay on your hand. I gotta get back into them.

Mine also came with an exchangeable rubber tip if you wish more stability, say if you have poor balance. When I go hiking I take off the rubber tip and the remaining carbon tip gives me a good pick for hiking.

    Tell you what, I'm
going to start up on them again. Glad we started the pole discussion, You girls have encouraged me again!

If you get tired arms or upper muscles just collapse the retractable poles and carry each one in your hand or just use them but don't exert any muscle power, just kind of lift them as you walk. I do that often when my arms tire out with the poles.

    Happy poling!

Carol, crazy thing is that for about a week, had no heat or juice, did not go into work (no one did around here) so I went to the gym every day!  They lucked out on getting  power back early.  Utility comp got back a Home Depot & Walmart running and my gym....was working on Wed, 3 days after the storm so the best place for heat and a charge on the cell phone and laptop....the gym! I was at the gym every day for over a week so actually, think the arm thing is feeling better.

The experience has been something that I can not explain to you.  Hope you never end up in this spot.  But Jersey is tough, hey have you seenour gov?  Tough cookie!

Been doing lots of strength training and arm is feeling good now, daily gym is a huge help

Gma, Yah hoo! mountain dew!  Your getting that dang thing out.  A round of Binney's famous chocolate brownies comming every girls way! And Gma... an extra big portion for you.

Cindyl, Which brand of poles are you looking at? You always can look for different brands at Winner's in the mens department. (around  $30 and under as a quick sell off.)  I am not sure if they are aluminum though and telescopical. Also check other sports stores or thift stores. It is winter now so they should be on sale from last years stock.  Do the big hunt or better still phone around.

Just did the beach boardwalk and forget those poles in the back of my car!
