Linda n-3 - gentle stretching seems to help the tightness for me. And yes - being a martyr doesn't get you anywhere. You and your body have been through a lot, be kind to yourself and cut yourself some slack. I can't tolerate the bra band and find that most discomfort issues with camisoles come from armholes. It's one of the reasons I find flat so much more comfortable. No undergarments if you don't want them (though I do find some undershirts without seams comfy). I chose to alter the necklines of my clothes to be high enough that I don't need a bra or camisole.  I actually cut up some of my camisoles and sewed the lacey top part into the necklines of some tops. Other tops I raised the neclines by altering the shoulder seam or making little tucks or gathers at the neck.

Full disclosure, I am not much of a swimmer--I wore my bathing suit to the hydrotherapy pool (aka hot tub) at my gym.  Guess I'll be giving that up when I start chemo, to avoid too much exposure to germs.

I'm checking back in after being gone for the holidays. There have been a lot of posts and links to check out. I thank all of you for those. I especially appreciate being introduced to Tig Notaro ... I couldn't stop myself from sobbing through her first post cancer diagnosis gig.

I've been going flat since I "gave up my breasts" in mid-August. Most people just don't seem to notice that I'm flat chested ... even those who saw me regularly when I had size D breasts. Granted, I purposefully dress with the intent of directing attention to other parts of my anatomy ... mostly my head and neck area ... the rest of me just looks "nice." As someone (sorry I cannot remember who to credit) had mentioned earlier, if you pass that initial 10 second glance most people don't look any further. From my personal observation, women with large breasts are the ones that get lingering looks ... women with small or no breasts just get a quick glance that moves on to whatever else is more obvious about her ... be it hair, clothing, shoes, or accessories. But then, wit and good humor are major detractors to any physical apprearance ... endowed or not.

I've found that most of the clothes I wore before still work for my new shape. Granted my wardrobe is mostly sweaters, jackets, knit tops, and blouses that hang well from the shoulders. Scarves, pins, and interesting earings direct attention away from my chest. The part of my body that I want to change is the lower part. Months of a whole lot less activity, as well as holiday food, have left me with an out of proportion ample stomach:-((

It was a pleasure to wake up with a feeling on New Year's morning that this day was a "crest" ... a feeling of physically and emotionally being over the "hump." Hope that feeling lasts ... so far, so good ;-))

Back in the late 60's-early 70's? Victor Buono, a portly actor-comedian, delivered a funny monologue about being overweight.  It ended with the motto:  "Thin is where it's been; FAT is where it's AT!"

So I've been trying to think of a motto for myself (ourselves) that ends "FLAT is where it's AT!"  But I can't think of a first line that rhymes.  Any ideas?

So very glad to meet you!  I was begining to think I was the only one!  But the real pet peeve,,,IS TRYING TO FIND CLOTHING! No I will not wear my fake boobs. I choose not to have reconstruction, I also chose not to wear bean bags, silicon, fluffy pillows.  I don't want darts in my blouses or dresses.  I was a 38DD I am as proud of myself then as now,(my husband says even more so)!  As for people staring, if they get to personal,,,,I flash them!  I found out you can't get in trouble for lewd or anything with no nipples!

    Ladies,

I have a question. When you had your surgeries, what type of shirt did you wear when you got home! I am looking at having a bmx. I have heard that bottom or snap down shirts are best. What types of fabrics, sizes, men's sleep shirts? I will appreciate having some suggestions.

    Thanks!!!!

    Kas

After surgery, while the drains are still "in" I wore the camisole I rec'd at the surgeons office. Over top that I wore my button down the front shirts - the loose ones.

Does anyone remember the Flatsy dolls of the early 70's?  The theme song was "Flatsy, Flatsy, they're flat and that's that."  After my dx and decision to have a DMX without reconstruction, I modified and adopted the theme song for me (Flatsy, Flatsy, I'm flat and THAT's THAT!!).  I'm proud of and feel very confident with my decision.

Thanks fernfm and blackcat2012. I really appreciate it. My insurance will pay for two camisoles. I will make sure to pick them up. I don't have any button down shirts so. Will make a run to Walmart. No sense spending a lot of money on the shirt when I will prob never want to wear it again.

Kassylou, I wore the camisole that had the pockets for the drains and a long strip of velcro that closed the camisole. Once I was done with the drains I would wear button downs for ease of dressing. One of the best things I did, was have my sister move all those button downs to my lower shelf of my closet. You cant lift your arms for a while and I felt more independant..Onwards

Thanks onwards! I have a robe that is very comfy. I am going to add snaps so I won't have to worry about the belt.

    Thanks everyone!!!

I wore my husband's shirts for a while.  Still do, actually, but only when bumming around the house.  Plain loose cotton buttondowns - extremely comfortable.

Kassylou, I used cheap cotton camisoles and a safety pin for the drains because my insurance company may or may not pay for a surgical camisole, based on meeting my deductibles... etc. etc. etc. run-around bs that I got from them, and there was no "preferred provider" locally so it was all going to be out-of-pocket. Do be sure to check with your insurance before you purchase!

Anyway, the cheap cotton camis worked fine, they were loose enough I could wiggle into them without moving arms too much, and initially I actually stepped into them and pulled them up over my hips. Next layer was a soft flannel shirt - I managed to find one that with snaps, but the others were fine, too. Next, a cardigan or vest, depending on how cold it was. On days that I had to dress a little nicer, I wore a button-down cotton shirt, added cardigan or vest, and then a bright pretty scarf to cheer me up. I was able to go back to the classroom (OK, so it was an elective class that only met 2 hours a week) 5 days after surgery, managed the drains just fine.

Dawn, I am ROTFLMAO .... keep on with that creative mind of yours!

Kassylou, My ins would pay for a camisole OR a mx bra, so I didn't bother with the camisole. DD gave me 2 pr fleece pjs with button fronts. Soft and warm! I took a webbing belt and pinned the drains to that; just wore it loosely around my waist. For showers, I pinned them to a long shoelace worn around my neck.

I wouldn't purchase much special - hopefully the post-surgery uncomfortableness and drains will only last 1-2 weeks (for me less than 2 weeks, drains for only 3 days) - my recovery was in MAY so it was warm and I didn't need to layer . . . The MAIN idea is something that is easy to get on and off, is NOT binding, and that you don't have to pull over your head.

Kassy-I was given a mastectomy camisole by a friend who came to visit me during my overnight stay. I loved it. I wore it every day for 6 days(that's when my drains came out). I would have never purchased one myself. Have no idea if my insurance would cover it. I'm pretty good at adapting things. I guess if there is one that you'd like that insurance won't pay for, Maybe a nice gift from a sister....or a friend.  Wishing you an uncomplicated, problem-free surgery with smooth sailing when it comes to healing.

Kassylou ~ I personally found the camisole uncomfortable.  I ended up just safety-pinning the drains to my top. Once I inadvertantly pinned one of the drains to my pj top and my pants.  What a shocker when I went to go to the bathroom.  Laughing  Don't make that mistake!  Other than that, I only wore the cami twice so to me, it was a waste and pinning the drains to my tops worked just fine.  Just do what is comfortable.

soft flannel pj's that button down the front with the drains safety pinned to front worked just fine for me. I did not attempt to go out of the house until after the drains came out. I took a lot of naps so it was convenient to wear pj's a lot and only get dressed in real clothes when going out of the house.

I don't remember any dolls called Flatsy's.  Anyone know the reason they were called Flatsy's? Are we talking barbie dolls ?  because all other dolls used to be flat except barbies.

Google Flatsy's commercial and you can hear the jingle on youtube. Laughing  They were flat dolls who came in a picture frame.
