    OMG!!!! Look at what I found! I think this might take the cake for Pinktober items.  No, SpecialK's pink pistol wins, but this is second. At least the pennies go to NBCF.

     Photo: I think this is my favorite Pinktober purchase EVER.

    For the cure? of men who attack?? I should have bought it.

    And I thought the gun and wine was bad. Makes you want to use it on whomever thought this was a good idea, doesn't it?

    Now don't get me wrong what I'm about say in regards to the pink pepper spray! Although I would never do this....but my twisted mind is running in circles with this! It's our defense against the next do do bird brain that says something offensive, insensitive, & just plain cruel to us! As your confronted by these remarks slowly drawl your PPS=pink pepper spray & Say...." Oh the one thing you weren't AWARE of with Breast Cancer". " Consider yourself AWARE of it as of now!". Anyone can add on or think up something else effective for PPS! ; )-

    Sorry I'm in mood tonight. Heading to work & know some are gonna give me a look or possible comment after taking an FMLA day last week when I only was scheduled to work 2 days the whole week. But I was so tired. I ended up sick that night I took off with fever, head cold & back to back unresolved bronchitis. Still feeling wiped & spent all my time at home! Sorry I went off on a tangent. Better to get it out than go off on a coworker!

    Julz, get the PPS and use it on anyone who gives you a hard time about taking time off. That might raise their awareness that YOU have BC and need a friggin day off sometimes. Take care and hope you feel better soon!

    Linda, I didn't read "common law copyright" I will if I can. Shows to go ya. They wanted you so sign over your copyright-----fock them. That's the only reason I looked into the laws . Some will try to do it and then can prevent us from saying what we want., B/c of the date stamp on the first page of the thread, that establishes a point in time . But again thats courts and lawyers

    We went wine tasting yesterday and came across a wine called "Girly Girl wine"  Of course, it's all done in pink - which is disgusting to begin with - and then (of course) part of the proceeds "help fund breast cancer research".  I was going to ask them just how they "helped fund breast cancer research", but realized that I'd probably lose it if they said they gave it to Komen.  Anyway, we left rather rapidly (it was also fairly crappy wine, but that's my opinion, for what it's worth.)

    Anyway, where I was going with that was the phrase: "help fund breast cancer research".  Just what is it that they are researching, anyway?  They don't say researching a CURE for breast cancer - just "breast cancer research".  Well, I've donated all I am going to donate to "breast cancer research".  I think we all pretty much know what it is.

    My donation to your T-shirt sayings:

    I donated my boob to cancer research.  Don't ask for money, too.

    You are all cracking me up today - thanks much!

    I had a mini-meltdown last night when I realized that so many of my professional aspirations will never be accomplished because I have lost the passion and energy required to continue. Now grieving this loss because DH and I met when we both shared our professional interests, now he is still in the middle of all the excitement, buzz, comeraderie, and I am "the spouse" who "tags along." Not sure who I am these days, just tired, worn out, tired of learning, but still yearning for the energy and passion I had two years ago, with glimmers of it that just leave me crying for what might have been.

    Pinktober Revolution really articulates the "no sappy emotions" about bc, and I truly appreciate it! Picking up the pieces and moving forward today, sans pink t-shirt but with an appreciation for the sunshine, sounds of cicadas, green of summer with sparkles of colored flowers, mildly humid warmth that surrounds me, feels like love or maybe hot flash.... LOL

    Gardengumby, I got a phone call asking me to contribute to breast cancer something or other about a month after my MX. I told them I was still paying off my hospital bills.

    Wren - I got a similar call. I told them I already donated two breasts - what more did they want?

    ~~~~~~
    I believe in teachable moments, when the "student" is likely to understand the lesson.
    I dearly love the family and friends who have supported me through all of this, even though their efforts may have been misguided. (Like, what am I supposed to do with pink cocktail napkins with pink high heels and pink BC ribbons?) But at least she was thinking of me, right?
    But I digress. I need to find a way to post on both my Facebook page and my CaringBridge page to alert everyone to the upcoming tsunami of disgusting pink.
    I think my title will simply be "Please Think Before You Pink"
    I will thank those who gave me gifts, and tell them that I love that they were thinking of me, but to please consider the bigger picture.
    Then I can talk about "Awareness" BS and all the other horrific marketing blitzes, and the desperate needs of cancer patients everywhere.
    If the "student" doesn't get the lesson, then the pepper spray will start to look really appealing to me.
    During the month of October, why don't we all wear black tee shirts that say on the front, "I hate pink" and on the back, "I'm in mourning until there's a cure...."
    Program Services & Other Expenses 2010
    Source: The Cancer Culture Chronicles blog
    "At the same time that Nancy Brinker and Komen clearly perceive research to be a minor part of curing breast cancer, the leadership fights over ownership of the trademarked phrase "for the cure" [i.e., see the articles under the category lawsuits] and consistently talks about its strong commitment to research over the years despite the fact that they believe it to be a minor part of eradicating the disease."
    Just this week Komen issued another effusive press release in which Komen announced that it will fund $55M toward research grants at 56 institutions across the United States and internationally, with $3M granted to support various patient support conferences and programs in 2011.
    Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Commits Nearly $58 Million in 2011 to Tackle Toughest Issues with New, Innovative Approaches to Breast Cancer Research
    Global Breast Cancer Leader Focuses on Development of Breast Cancer Vaccine, Creating More Effective Therapies and Reducing Disparities in Treatments for African Americans and Other Ethnic Groups
    That's interesting. It sounds like a lot of money too. Note that $58M is a decrease of about $17M from last year's research allocation. Why the decline in research funding? Komen had record revenues in 2010 of $389M. Maybe research is getting less and less important to finding a cure for breast cancer. At a whopping $58M, only 15 percent of Komen's resources for 2010 were allocated to research the following year.
    FIFTEEN PERCENT. FIFTEEN PERCENT. FIFTEEN PERCENT. FIFTEEN PERCENT.
    Yet, the number ringing in our ears from Brinker's regular statements about the "national grant pool" is that 25 percent of money raised from affiliates goes to research. Unfortunately, that's 25 percent of a different number altogether. The Komen shell game plays on as Brinker herself touts the organization's funding of cutting-edge research. She states,
    Our goal at Komen is to fund research with the greatest potential to make a difference and save lives in the shortest period of time. That means putting our dollars toward cutting-edge research that is high-risk, with potentially huge rewards.
    Okay, we're baffled again. If research is not Komen's priority when it comes to funding, how can the organization expect to "make a difference and save lives in the shortest period of time." High risk research could potentially result in some great finding that moves the state of science forward in such a profound way that cure is just around the corner. Maybe. But that's not how medical research has worked in the past. Science moves in fits and starts. Incremental at best. Breakthroughs happen, sure. Wouldn't Komen increase the odds of breakthroughs in science if it funded more research?
    And what does Brinker mean by the "shortest period of time?" How exactly is that to be measured? Someone diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer is likely to want to see the shortest period of time as sometime about...NOW. That's unlikely, we admit. Will it happen next year? In ten years? Should we wait another thirty years and keep throwing pink parties in the meantime to celebrate minor successes? When asked by Leaders whether she felt we were any closer to finding a cure, Nancy Brinker said,
    I believe we're about halfway there. For 20 years, most of our research funding went to cancer biology. Now we're focusing only on taking that biology and moving it toward a translational component.
    Okay, 20 years. Is that the "shortest period of time?" What does it mean to be halfway to a cure anyway?
    Time is important to a cancer patient. Ten years or twenty years makes a huge difference. It's important to researchers and physicians too who want to do the best for their patients. Treat them well. Give them hope for a future. It's not nice to throw around time frames without a clear plan to back it up. And what does Nancy mean when she goes on to say that,
    The board asked me to take over as CEO to shape and fashion the organization because we're all working on the 2020 plan.....
    What is the 2020 plan? That's ten years from now. Clock ticking. Is she referring to the the National Breast Cancer Coalition's 2020 Deadline, the campaign oriented to eradicating breast cancer by 2020? Or does Komen have it's own 2020 plan?
    We really hope Nancy will tell us WHEN we can expect to "end breast cancer forever," and how Komen will achieve this lofty goal without making research the priority.
    patmom, i got a big chuckle out of that one.  my saying has always been "it's all good" i am sure everyone who knows me is tired of hearing that. especially my fam and friends who r mad that this big c came back at me with a mission .  i was in a store in october one day and texted my 21 yr old daughter in college and said, "if i walk into one more store and see pink im buying a baseball bat" and she texted me back..."its all good, except when you see pink"  again i got a great chuckle over that. used to like the color..lol
    Blessings, I love "think before you pink". Many other great thoughts. But that just jumped at me.
    Shells do you have shirts that blouse a bit around the middle? For us that the flatter belly is a thing of the past? If we order a t when should we have the order in by?
    In different periods of catching up on reading, many, many great slogans, But focktober and foctober are the most consistently carried. Not suggesting anything, just an observation.
    blessings20, you r hysterical.  still laughing...you so nailed our feelings. we need to write a book together..lol  the funniest bc gift i ever got was the book, the bible cure to cancer.  i have great faith and this person thought they could reach me through this book, see i wasnt responding to all the other treatment cures she had for me, i still laugh eveytime i see the book. i dont know who ever marketed the whole "pink and i am in charge of my own destiny" thing. but i sure would like to meet them in a room alone for a bit..lol
    voraciousreader - I like your suggestion best.
    Hi all,
    Sas - re: shirts - there are no deadlines, you can order whenever. You can pick the shirt type/color you want. I have the cheapest T-shirt in the displays. It is a unisex straight tee, not a fitted one, so it should be fairly loose depending on what size you order. If you choose another brand or shirt style other than the basic one, it will update the price for that type of shirt. I do not set the shirt prices. Better quality, heavier weight shirts = more $$. There is a ladies v-neck that is close in price but I haven't ordered it before to see how it fits.
    Customizing - You can also modify the shirt text yourself if something doesn't quite work for you. Just click on "customize". If it isn't turned on for the shirt you want, just let me know and I'll open it for editing.
    I loved yours GardenGumby - making you one that says "I donated my boob to breast cancer research. Don't ask for money too." I could wear that at Publix all month here, they are into collecting money for everything.
    "Think before you Pink" is already copyright protected by that organization, no can do.
    To all we need to get our shirts ordered whatever we decide we want, we don't have to get them through Shells , but she has been involved since day one. Each of us have been involved in some sort of planning , thought,education,slogan. A plethora to choose from. Last minute work --leaves the provider nuts and sleepless.
    Again I request that since, we think we started the revolution here, PINKTOBER REVOLUTION should be on the shirt. Can be very small lettering, but again identifies a common place, a common begininng, a common thought. If a lawsuit comes out of it. I'm ready to take the heat. Been there done that i.e taking the heat.. Never been sued, but Ds is a lawyer and if they come after my assets, Ds is going to have to get involved. I see it as a nobrainer my assets are his inheritance LOL. Think of the press release: BC _____(whatever can't controlt the whatever), Who lost her husband to lymphoma in the same time period of BC treatment, and has had a subsequent brain tumor removed that has been associated with BC, in the southeastern part of the USA ,has been sued by________. Duh --Get real whoever wants to be involved with that one is going to be seen worse than Scrooge.
    Huge amount of suggestions and thoughts here, but now is the time to act. Get your orders in. If you order with Shells remember she works fulltime and her t shirt business is a 2nd job----the woman will need sleep time. Plus she has to order supplies. All of that can't be done at the last minute. Choose and act.
    Well this is what I have asked Shells for, It's a play off of VR;s that hit a basic feeling  besides the size. C&P.
    Guide me I need, a bloused abdomen bigger than boobs. Won't wear it if I look Like a prego or old fat lady-
    L/ ex lge on top 1x not qiite 2x in the middle --- Black
     PINKTOBER REVOLUTION can be small lettering ---essentially logo size
    Back and front with the same
    Saying after PINKOCTOBER REVOLUTION------there but small letters so as to not obsure the message
    I mourn those that died
    I mourn those that will die
    I mourn that I may die
    Are you next?
     Color black Pink lettering
    Okay folks get your orders in, trust me been involved with too much over my lifetime. Now is the decision time to order what you want .There was never an intent to come to a common saying---the intent was to generate many sayings, many thoughts and be a resource for education and discussion.  What happens now is how everyone decides, what words have meaning too each of you. Go with whatever your heart tells you.  Only when Vr wrote her words did it clarify what my feelings were. I have read all posts. Some fell flat, some resounded, some of my own words fell flat. If a post resounds within you, that's important. It came to the center of your being. Something within you responded b/c it was important in your life. Fly with it.
