Haven't been here for awhile. I like all the shirts. I was going to get the one about my real breast trying to kill me. That and Stop pimpin' the pink.
I agree about the football games. I hate that. Just donate that money to a reputable BC cause.
Hope you are all doing well.
Blessings

I want to do something. I work at a school that seems to be married to Komen. They are having a Tackling Cancer football game. I am thinking about doing some Culture Jamming this October. Maybe printing out some thinkbeforeyoupink.org stickers, replacing signs. Anyone done this?
And please post if there is a place to get some anti pink shirts. I like the green idea too. It's crazy that I feel like a radical for hating on the pink outside of people that are or have gone through this!
OH! AND I think when the big races and crap start, I'll have a challenge for people to match their race entry money to give to metavivor. This might go ok, since we have a coworker that was diagnosed about the same time I was that is now in hospice care.

You could check Cafe Press for anti pink, I'm not sure they have them.
I have a print shop near me, they can do anything you want on a shirt. Maybe there is similar near you?

Spookiesmom,
Great idea! I think there is a little place in town run by a former student. If Spookie is in that pic - she is adorable!
I might get run out of town for wearing an anti pink shirt, but I'm ready!

Yep, that's Spookie on her 3rd birthday, Halloween. I had the print shop make a spooky Halloween shirt with a Maltese wearing a witches hat, and we put her name on it. Spookie Samhain.

Spookiesmom,
I have a wonderful snuggle buddy. Violet is a 14 year old pug. She's enjoying my extra time on the couch this summer!

Awwwww. Have you checked out the comfort dog thread?
0 -
No, but I will! I have kind of lurked on this site since April. I was caught up in all of the tests, surgery, etc. Then I took a break, went on vacation and started chemo a couple of days later. I had a lot of visitors in the beginning, but I'm a couple months in, not as much fun and the visits have kind of tapered off. I've been feeling really isolated and thought talking to people going through the same thing would be a good thing. It is. I spend a lot of time sleeping or doing next to nothing. I'll check out the Comfort dogs! Thanks!

hello librarian. Welcome to the club here. Lots of nice piccs on comfort dogs and feel free to post a few of your own! **hint, hint**Shall I assume you are a librarian? Or that you like to read? There is a book thread too, where we talk about think we like to read,,, not related to health or BC.

"Think Before You Pink" has been my title for all my annual FB rants.... guess I should come up with a new one....
At least now none of my friends will ever put a pink-ribboned product in her shopping cart without searching the package to see if there is a donation being made, how much, and to what organization. That message has been pounded in over the past three years. Now it's time to get tougher.
I keep thinking of things like "How many of you have never heard of breast cancer?" then going on to talk about the futility of gimmicks to create "awareness" of something we all know about.
I wish that FB would post one of those stupid tests that always pop up like "What dog breed are you?" and "What Disney character are you?" and "How good is your vocabulary?" but instead make it a quiz about BC - especially MBC. "How savvy are you when it comes to breast cancer?" "Share on your FB page!"
I just want to be careful not to be truly insulting to those friends who are golden-hearted but just ignorant. So many of them participate in those dreadful pink-themed activities, then send me pictures telling me that they have done this in my name.
As for shirts with messages, several women have had great shirts printed up by Zazzle. http://www.zazzle.com/

That would be an excellent quiz. Somewhere out there,, someone must have one,,,,0 -
Glennie, Yep! I am a young adult librarian at a school. I've read more dystopian novels than you can shake a stick at! I thought I would read a ton this summer, but my brain is such mush, I've not been able to concentrate much.
Blessings, I love your quizz idea! I have a couple ignorant, but well meaning people in my life. I have this older lady that keeps sending me pink ribbon bracelets, pins, etc. I thought I would save them and give them to the volunteer at the mammography clinic. I noticed she had a lot of swag on the other day.
It's a hard line. I don't want to alienate anyone - we have a lot of pink related crap at school. It seems they are married to Komen, but I also want to raise some honesty. How to do that? I don't know! I know I will not be a good breast cancer patient during their pink jersey Tackling Cancer football game. Why don't they take that money that they spent on jerseys and give it to research, or people in the community that need help, etc. Ugh.
Here's a pic from a couple years ago. She also goes kayaking with us. Ah... I miss my kayak. Haven't even gotten it out this year.

Ahhhhh, she's adorable. And I love her little basket.
I've read the Divergent series!! LOL!!
Bummer on not being able to concentrate enough to read,,,,
0 -
Glennie, If you liked that, you might like the Delirium series and the Matched series. I've still not seen the Divergent movie. I read Fault in our Stars before dx. Have not seen the movie. I think I'll wait a while for that one!

Divergent movie was good. I saw it before I read the book and they were true to the book.Likewise, The Fault in Our Stars,, loved the book,, movie was also good. My friend and I teared up, of course,, but the young girls behind us were SOBBING during the movie. It was unreal.
I'm collecting titles to have in the house for my hysterectomy post op time!!
are you on Goodreads? That's where I keep track of my books. my usual genre is mystery/thrillers.

I was venting to DH tonight about this very subject, and he suggested instead of a one-time rant on FB, how about posting one breast cancer question a day...
Sort of like a daily quiz - then post a brief answer so folks don't tune completely out, or de-friend me.... not that I'd mind, actually.
If I can change just one person's perception of what BC really is, then I will feel good about what I write.
But I do feel compelled to offset "PUKETOBER", which is the name of another thread on this subject.

seems like a good idea. I follow a few BC bloggers on FB,, it will be interesting to see what they will be posting.0 -
blessings, I like that idea! I have some images from my mammograms I thought about posting as well as that horrible needle placement. Ouch.
Glennie, I'll pm you with my shelfari info.
You are great! I'm sure ill be ranting and raving all of Yucktober! And I love that time of year. Blah.

Hi Everybody - I absolutely love this thread. I would love to see the women on here organize for a collective campaign in Oct. For example, we all do the same FB stuff...whatever that stuff may be.
I used to love the month of October but now I am dreading it. As a college professor I anticipate our annual "Lee Denim Day" and all the events around BC awareness to raise money for Komen. Fortunately (unfortunately), I will most likely have surgery #5 in Oct. and miss all the fun. With regard to FB, I have a photo of me getting chemo with my middle finger up. I'm thinking it may become my profile pic. My cover photo will provide websites such as Pink Ribbons, Inc, Think Before You Pink & Metavivor as well as a link for donations to Penn Medicine for their BC research. I will then post a message thanking friends and family for taking the time to check out the websites and for all the support they've given me all year. So my question is, what do you think? I too don't want to alienate anyone as people really are well intended. Another question: Are there any other website you can suggest for posting?
For those looking for great books and who love dogs, nothing tops The Art of Racing in the Rain. Loved it!

I will probably post this parody. It's not really ridiculous when you realize who is pimping the pink!

I'm adding that one to my line up. Thanks LibrarianB.

Heads Up. It's starting. The BC Awareness game on FB involves posts about winning scratch off lottery tix. I blasted the poor woman who tried to include me in the "game". She removed her post. I felt really bad as she just did not know but the message came across clearly. My current status reads, "Fair Warning to Everyone: Do not include me in this year's BREAST & PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS game. Trivializing cancer to a game is BS. I'm heading to surgery #6 post chemo and it's not pretty. I'll be lucky to have only 4 more surgeries but it may be more. That's BC folks. It's not a game."

Thank dog I'm not on FB I'd blow a fuse.

Love it Warrior. We picked up a pizza yesterday and a guy had a pink ribbon Stephanie Speilman T shirt on. Let's hope Puketober isn't like Christmas and starts to creep into earlier months!
We just got an email about the annual Tackling Cancer football game. I did notice that they mentioned donating money for reseach and for people with cancer, but never named a charity. I want to ask soooo bad!!
I do think I will take a FB break. I haven't been on it much this summer. I know that people present a certain side on FB, but all of their very normal things make me feel very not normal. Their very adorable baby pics remind me that will never be in my future. Their travel pics remind me of the time on the couch this summer... It makes me sad...
BUT - stupid cancer posts make me MAD. I'll suffer in sadness alone, but make me mad, and I open my mouth! Maybe too much.

love this thread...tho i have to say a year or so ago i was just as ignorant - thought you did the drill & got a ticket to cancer freedom - boy was i wrong
where the hell has all the money been going??
they're making sure every one has a mammo so they can feed more women to the "Cure" - someone is making some serious money somewhere
just a couple of rants...thought it was ok to do it here

Red. I embrace red as my colour. Red for Life, for Passion, for Fire. Red for the blood we've spilt and the pain we've endured. Red for Power, for Energy, for Soul.
Pink is for little girls. Red? Now that's the Big Girls' colour!

Rant away, notbuyingit,,, we are ranting along with you.
Selena: Red is awesome,,, although I am also partial to royal purple!! Baby pink,, bleeeech.

Hi, everyone glad you are here I've been on a break. Catching up
As each of us do, I wanted to do something, back when I created the Pinktober Revoultion thread.
I thought evaluating breast cancer organizations was an opportunity. I created a separate thread. In my research, I found BCA. They started the "Think Before You Pink " (TBYP) is a copyrighted slogan of Breast Cancer Action(BCA). They are out of California. The TBYP program has a pamphlet available and a web page.
I talked with them and asked if they had a list of organizations that meet/answer the 4 questions raised by their research. They didn't. I asked if they minded me/us using them? They were very happy that we would.
What I found was that it wasn't just a little bit of work to answer the questions. It took serious study to do it well. What's great about the BCA questions is they caused me to focus on finding the answers. Delusionly, I thought I would do one a week. I tried too much in a short time span. I wore myself out. But one of the great things is, I learned allot
Do not want to make the companion thread to this, an interference with any thought here. This is only to make you aware that it exists.
The link to it is in the topic box. If you choose to do an evaluation and need help, I have found it's best to do the discussion on the phone. The side effect is we get to talk I love talking to BCO members.
I too have two furbabies. Love them dearly. Have learned though, in the very hard way, that they can hurt me. The second furbaby came with the DBF. Until that time, I never had an injury. But mine changed her habits i.e sleeping in my bed. For some strange reason, they both now sleep/ lay in direct pathways. I've learned to always turn a light on getting up at night or walking into a room. But it took multiple falls to make these rules. OUCH!
Have a great time coming up with Pinktober Revolution ideas. Hugs and Health, sassy
