Feeding program alive and well at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario - staffed by very well trained volunteers - a very small hospital (getting ready to expand) with 600 Volunteers!!!

Sandy, when did it start? "A pebble thrown in the waters makes rings that we know not where they end"-----may be original, Lol may be from reading something that is seared into my mind. Lots of Canadian relatives. I pontificate allot. But many have ideas that coincide in the space of time
So, happy someone started it up your way. Started successfully in one place They have tossed the pebble into the pond. As an aide at one time I knew how long one feeding could take. It wasn't a few minutes. For the type of patient that needs a feed, it's in the range of 20 minutes.
A side affect of making all employees vested into the program was a greater involvement in their job. Everything they did revolved around the well being of their patients. Again the plan was once or twice a month per employee. By helping with a feed, it was real. Versus, I fixed that sink in 405. Not to devalue anyone's job. But the human contact makes the functioning sink in 405--different. They have the vision of a person that they directly helped. All after they are thinking "A person", not a function.
I had what I call one killer chemo. Admission: 104.8 temp, wbc 1.5, Neuts 0.5. Tues am admission, Fri discharge. The staff, some I had worked with, none of the aides I knew. But I knew all the staff manning the computer consoles for dietary, they would call and say " Want can we do?". I bleerily would say--????---I remember the questions, don't remember my responses. They knew I was in trouble They kept sending trays. I woke up with all theses over the bed tables around me, but never remember anyone offering me anything.
This was years after trying the Feeding Corp concept died. Now I was on the flipside. Oh so knew the value.
Sandy thank you for coming here and taking time to read. Bless you. I'm in post thyroid cancer. Not a biggy cancer versus the rest. The RAI-131 therapy has done more harm than the cancer. Way more harm. Check in on Rectal Issues thread.

Posters are up at the college where I teach. Support Breast Cancer RESEARCH. They're raising $ for Komen. They know exactly where I stand on this and I appreciate that they will change things for next year. I'll be doing my own little FB awareness blitz to vent my frustration.

Warrior, drop back a page or two until you find a post by KayB. She describes what Komen has done locally. Then if you go to the Komen web sit and work through the links to see where the research money has gone.Brinker erred. The Komen Foundation erred. Haven't looked this year to see what they have changed, but you mention they have changed.
Please, Warrior write at length here what the change is. It's important for those that follow, so, they don't have to go to another source to figure it out.
Look at Ruthrubs' analysis of STU2C. She did an excellent analysis last year. The key to the relevancy of STU2C is b/c of the administration of the foundation, they show no administrative costs. How unique in the 501c3 world that is, I have know idea. BUT IT IS FRIGGEN BRILLIANT. Someone gets paid a wage. Materials are paid for etc. Apparently, the way it's set up, it's legal. I started educating my Facebook family and friends a few weeks ago. (Please forgive me if I've posted this here already... brain fog!)
My first one:
Someone
had posted a video of a mom dancing with her son at his wedding. She had
battled MBC for so long, and hung on to be able to dance with him. She passed
just three days later.I posted the link, explaining it this way:
Dear Facebook Family and Friends: as we get closer to October (or
"Breast Cancer Awareness" month - or "Pinktober" as many in
the breast cancer community call it) I wanted to share this video to bring
awareness not just to the issue of breast cancer or the need for mammograms. I
wanted to put a face to Metastatic Breast Cancer, or Stage IV Breast Cancer.
Every year, more than 40,000 women die of MBC. Sadly, this number has NOT
decreased for at least 15 years, despite all the "Awareness"
campaigns. The truth is, we don't need more "Awareness"... we need a

October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) is just around the
corner, so I wanted to post this now.In September, 2011, I was diagnosed with Invasive Breast
Cancer. I underwent a double mastectomy in December 2011, with final
reconstruction in August 2012. From the bottom of my heart, I thank all of you
who supported me on that path. Today there is no evidence of cancer in my body.
God is good.As many of you begin to participate in the Annual “Breast
Cancer Awareness” activities coming up, I just ask you to please consider these
things:1. Does the activity TRIVIALIZE breast cancer? NOT GOOD! This
is a very serious issue.2. Does the activity SEXUALIZE breast cancer? NOT GOOD! There
is nothing sexy about breast cancer.3. Does the activity generate income to be donated to a reputable
organization that provides direct services to women in need? GREAT! Low income
patients need all the help they can get.4. Does the activity generate income to be donated to a
reputable organization that funds research for a breast cancer CURE? GREAT! We
all have “awareness”… what we need is a CURE.5. If you put a “Pinkwashed” product in your shopping cart,
have you checked to see exactly how much money from that sale is donated, and
the name of the organization where the proceeds are donated? GREAT! If it is
not stated, then the MANUFACTURER is making money off the misery of breast
cancer patients everywhere. NOT GOOD! Pink ribbon advertising is not enough.Again, I thank you all so much for your love and support
when I was going through this. As ONE IN EIGHT women will be diagnosed with
breast cancer in their lifetimes, I also thank you on their behalf. xoxoxo~ ~ ~
I need to be sure I don't embarrass or shame any of my loved ones who are just uneducated about the things they post. Their hearts are in the right place, and I do appreciate their love and support. I just want to get the word out to them, before they start posting some of the offensive, gimmicky things.

Sas - When I mentioned changes I was only referring to my place of employment. They heard me loud and clear and next year BC awareness will be one much differently. The money raised will go either directly to research or directly to service to assist women with BC. Thank you for the information because as I discuss this with them, I need to be as informed as I can be. There is no point in making a fuss and being proven wrong.

I"m glad this thread is still going. I had my own personal crisis moment last night during the girls' volleyball game. I'm a high school teacher and I had to go down to the gym for something (I work into the evening sometimes) and it was decked out all nine yards in pink ribbon shit and all the girls had on pink ribbon t-shirts and there was a cupcake sale with a bunch of pink sweets, and I'm convinced that sweets contributed to my BC in a major way. It was surreal and no one said anything to me, mainly since I'm still new, but all are aware that I have BC and have had for 10 mo now. But, since I've chosen the 100% holistic route, I really felt left out, and like people think I'm "not doing it right." In other words I felt the opposite of supported and I'm sure the other teacher in the HS who has colon cancer didn't feel too good about it either. I kept my mouth shut b/c I don't want to offend people who honestly think they're helping, so here I am blasting off where I feel safe. Glad I'm not the only "curmudgeon" out there. I hate Pinktober with a passion. There, I said it.
