And the good news is that the folks who organize the BC Awareness events at my place of employment listened to my concerns about Komen and have requested from me and other women a list of organizations that we would prefer to raise money for.  I will be less ticked off this October than originally planned.

Warrior, that is great!  I would love it if someone asked my opinion on it all.

While I know that the think they are doing "more good" by giving money for awareness, sometimes I am so saddened by empty offers of help by the same people that are organizing these events.  I've had several people tell me if there is ANYTHING they can do....  I have asked about help with my yard and have a takethemameal account.  You should see them back peddle.  Booo.  I am debating on asking for a few student Counsel kids to help me cut and weed my yard.  They are the one sponsoring the football game.  I've already asked if there were Seniors that needed a couple hours of community service.  The teacher did not know of any.  I honestly was hoping she'd contact a couple good ones...I just find all of these pink Tshirts a farce, when they have a three staff members (one is retired) in active treatment and the Pink Brigade has totally ignored doing small simple things for us.  I'm sure they'll want to honor us at their pink football game.  PUKE.

Anyway - is Pinktober coming early?  Saw a guy this week with a pink ribbon shirt and a lady at the deli all decked out in pink with a ribbon on her hat.  Yikes.  I may hermit in October!

Will you post what you plan to share on FB?  I will too.  I'll admit, I'm pissy and emotional lately and may need to lift others ideas, lest a offend the pink brigade!

Librarian, I've been thinking of posting something on my facebook at the start of October to "educate and enlighten" my friends and acquaintances.  Sort of a breast cancer myths and facts thing.  If any of you have good ideas or links, let me know!

Librarian, I do hope you find someone to mow your lawn.  That seems like such a simple request, easy for someone to do. It's not complicated, or bloody or gory or whatever. A 12 year old could do it. That is very frustrating when people ask and then they don't want to do anything!!  F that!!!

Librarian You ave really struck a chord. I'm in Florida. We have a thing called "Bright Futures" scholarship program throughout the state. Part of the the qualifying requirement is community service as you mentioned. The guidance counselor has to approve it.

The point of including it in the requirements is/was to teach students the value of volunteerism. Why not a registry place that would take names of people that need assistance. I know it's done all over for different things. Build a park. Elder home cleanup. etc..........

Maybe it already exists and we just don't know it. I suggest we all call our school boards and inquire. I'm going to call mine now--BBL :)

Uh, Sas, I think King Ricky did away with Bright Futures. Or chopped it up pretty bad.

Spookie------he did , but not sure how bad. The volunteer thing is still intact. I called the school board for Brevard county. Waiting for a callback. BTW that's the first time I heard him called King Ricky UGH!

Hi, glennie--------so true----those that say "Whatever you need" The few that actually do something..........

    Spookie LOL

For everyone else, Spookie and I are in Florida. Her reference to King Ricky is re: our Governor Rick Scott.

I'm in FL too,, good name for him.   Personally I hate Ronald Reagan. Every time I see the sign on the turnpike calling it the Ronald Reagan turnpike, I want to take an axe and chop it down.  One of the first things he did when he took office, was to completely cut my college financial aid. Thankfully I was graduating at the end of that semester, but my younger brother didn't have the money to stay in full-time.  GRRRRRR!!!

Kids do need to do community service. Not sure if it is a school requirement or what.  I help out with serving dinner at the local homeless shelter from time to time, and when kids come (middle and high school)  they need a paper filled out saying that they had been there. So it's a requirement for something.

There should be a sort of registry to help out. Churches and other organizations take on projects. Why not a high school club?  Seems like back when I was in high school, the Key Club was very big on volunteer projects. Do they still exist?

Sorry about your governor.  We have a doosey in Ohio too.  Kasich, but we call him Kay-suck.

Oh!  And I reread my post!  Not cut my weed!  My weeds!  ha ha.  I'm sure I'd have a lot of volunteers if I had weed to cut!  Maybe I should leave that in my request?

I really believe in a community service requirement.  Sometimes I am disappointed because many kids at our school organize big fund raisers (races and such) or participate in those instead of helping their neighbors that are in need.

Well, if not anything else, when all of this is said and done, I am going to make sure to do the little things for people that no one else may think of.

Call me cynical, but I am going to ask NHS, the anti bullying club, the Christian student group and Student Counsel just for a couple volunteers to mow and pull weeds.  I am going to look at it like an experiment.  I've been there 10 years, but am a transplant and outsider. (I don't go to the big church down there, which makes me a heathen!)   Do you think I'll get anyone?  I think I'd have a load of band and choir kids if they didn't practice noon-night.  :)  They are my people!

I'll let you know!  I think I'll let my grass grow one more week.  My boyfriend works at the same school and puts in tons of overtime so, work and taking care of me are his priorities.  It gets under my skin that he is giving so much time to that place (I did too before dx) and there are a lot of empty blah blahs about us being a family and helping each other at work.  Don't get me wrong, there have been a few people that have stepped up, brought us food, my lunch bunch has been great!

Any one willing to cut my weed?  haha!

Librarian, LOL re:weed, as long as I can collect it. RE:the offers of help. My two closest friends disappeared when asked for help. Maybe they were overwhelmed with the idea b/c both DH(now deceased) and I had cancer at the same time. .... Still haven't heard from school board. Will let you know what they say.

Sas pop into the closest public HS ask if you could speak to a guidance counselor . If your B of E is anything like mine, hell will freeze over before they get back to you.

Librarian:  I think it is a great idea to ask those groups for help. Band kids!!  Go for it.  Heathens are great people. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

And I can help Sas with the weed collection.  **cough**  I mean, weeding,, yeah,, that's it!  Sas, be sure and collect those clippings carefully in one particular bag.   heh heh heh

Edit:  just to say, that medical marijuana will be on the ballot in November.   I dang sure hope it passes. I don't need it at this point, but it would be great to have it available if I did need it,, and for all those people who need it NOW.

Edit again:  on the ballot in FLORIDA!!  I meant to put that.  Thanks Spooks.

Sas, I'm so sorry your friends disappeared.  I wonder how it will be once treatment is over.  Do people show up again?  How do you deal with that?  I'm glad I started going to support now and I'm glad I found this community!

You crack me up!  My good friend has what he calls the weed Cheetos economic recovery plan!  I think it might be a while for Ohio, but I hope not.  I think those most against it have never tried it.  It cant be any worse for me than what my docs are pumping me full of!  I sign every petition I can!  It blows my mind that people are incarcerated for pot possession.

Yep!  I love the misfits and heathens at school!  They are my people!  I work in a very rural conservative area with a lot of very conservative folks. The kids know who the 5 or so hippie teachers are and seek us out.  You should've seen the backlash when kids wanted to start a GSA.  Gay straight alliance.  It was ugly and we lost an amazing teacher who left...  That wasn't the only reason she left, but it didn't help.  Sigh.

Librarian those two friends are gone from 2009 the first year. Just when we needed them most. One tried to come back, I just ignored her. It hurt at first, but was a great lesson. History now. Now wasted thinking about them. ..........Second call into school board. I really want to see what they say. People often open a checkbook etc. But the nitty gritty of actual one on one work is so needed.

I was a nurse. A PITA nurse that was always coming up with ideas how to improve things. One great idea didn't fly. It was so important. A problem in hospitals that is universal, is some patients have difficulty feeding themselves. The idea was to set up a system that a nurse would notify a central number that a patient needed help. Each employee in the hospital including the CEO, would be allowed/expected to take an extra 1/2 hour to feed a patient after or before their own lunch. I enlisted other department heads to gain consensus for the need and implementation. The program would have entailed developing a whole training program for everyone. It would have been a financial commitment by the hospital b/c of training,  developing the computer phone system notification, committing the employees for a half hour with pay. Not every employee would have to do it everyday. There would have been maybe a couple of days a month for each one involved.

The biggest supporter of the idea was the head of dietary. I was pleased when she was so enthusiastic. I asked her why? Her response was that she saw so many uneaten trays return. Well that became part of the plan for justification.

Outcome: administration felt that employees couldn't be away from their jobs the extra time. They decided the hospital volunteers were the best group to do it. The volunteers decided they were afraid that something might go wrong. Idea died.

Nursing staff is bare bones at most hospitals. They will tell you that "feeds" are done /assigned. But the actual doing leaves allot to be desired. The type of patient that needs assistance generally eat very slow. Hence at least 1/2 hour. I had a really cool name--I thought "The (hospital name) Feeding Corp"

The program could have been marketed once it went through full development, with a book produced defining the "How to Do a Patient Feeding Assistance Program". OH well.

I've written the whole thing here for a reason :)  Perhaps someone will see it and be successful at implementing it :)
