Sorry, Piper Maybe someone will use the situation to start a discussion of whether that really accomplishes anything. It doesn't have to be you; it's possible there are other enlightened souls in the building...
Wish I could post a photo of a house here in town that's undergoing renovation and has been painted Pepto-Bismol pink for the month 'to support awareness'. I'm just glad it's nowhere I have to see it and I'm sorry a friend posted it FB - I'm not sure I'll ever wash that image out of my brain.

I really hope that house is Victorian because pink just doesn't work on most homes.
Last year at graduation the entire graduating body work pink ribbons on their commencement gowns to show support for me. Now that might seem like a nice thing to do but understand that most of the students have no idea who I am, I never granted anyone permission to share my medical history and no one asked how I would feel if they did that. Well, I felt like chit. It was inappropriate, did not belong at the event and it appears that some of my colleagues actually thought I had something to do with it.
I really hope I can be as eloquent as Blessings in a few days but I have a bad feeling my head will explode and splatter my brains all over. Should that happen, please dispose of my ashes in a Tupperware container.

No, the house is Craftsman - and the pink truly is a neon-enhanced shade of Pepto-Bismol pink. The month is going to seem extraordinarily long to the neighbors, I'm sure. (My understanding is that it will be re-painted after October, but I wish them luck covering a color that intense.) The City ought to cite them for poor taste if nothing else...
WW - I would have been livid, too, at what happened at your school. That's an incredible violation on so many levels it makes my head spin. I'm assuming you don't want pink Tupperware for your container...

If Tupperware goes pink on us, please get me a brown cardboard box.

I just got a card in the mail from the place that I had a PEM last year. It was a reminder to get checked this year again and it had pink ribbons all over it. uggg...wth, I have no more breasts why are you sending this to me????0 -
Same here, WW.

Miss you Tang! Are you doing ok otherwise?
0 -
Spookiesmom-I'm good, just trying to figure out my new normal0 -
Yeah, that can take some time.

WW I would have hated that too--it's like everyone pointing at you and only noticing the BC--nothing else. Not at honor at all. OTOH, what makes it hard is that someone else in your place would have really liked it, so if you could communicate a rule of thumb, it would be to ask the "victim" of this sort of attn ahead of time. I was thinking of making up a little joke badge for the teacher with colon cancer--I want to find a brown ribbon and fix it to a card and tell her it's asshole awareness day. Not everyone would think that's funny for sure, but I think she'll get a laugh out of it.

Pipers! Too funny. I tell ya. If it wasn't for the women on BCO my head would be spinning.
Ladies - Is anyone else on Twitter? When I search for Pinktober Revolution nothing comes up but lots of pink comes up when you search Pinktober. I plan to add #Pinktober Revolution to my tweets and invite anyone who would like to join me to please do so.

I was going along a bit smugly because I've thus far, been spared pinkification. Nothing on FB, etc. This morning I was gobsmacked when I opened my copy of the Arizona Republic. There in all it's icky pinkness was an entire section..sponsored by Komen. If I buy a Buick they will donate $100 to Komen. I am urged to help fundraise by asking my waitress at my favorite restaurant to donate a day's tips to Komen. If I tile my pool, a company promises to donate to Komen. Komen claims to give 25% to research and to have helped 221 women directly..Then there are the ads that don't promise anything...but are pink...Oh good grief, it's going tg be a very long month..

Ladies - every October I get the most horrific things posted on my Facebook page ( did I already share the "Mammo-Grahams?) and I have to think of ways to change the mind-sets of otherwise wonderfully, loving family and friends who think they are actually doing something to help me and others like me.
You see, until you are diagnosed the breast cancer yourself, it's sort of an "us" and "them" situation.... In other words, all of us who never have to worry about breast cancer (!) , and those "poor souls" who have already been diagnosed.
So the kind, humane, loving, supportive, empathetic thing to do is to post anything remotely having to do with BC, so "those" women who are our friends and relatives with BC truly understand that we care about them.
Forget the fact that the things we post are offensive, disgusting, and absolutely horrific - after all, isn't it enough to show that we care?
I feel like it is my job to educate those who are just clueless. (Like the pasotr's wife who wanted me and two other BC survivors to create a "Cancer Club" for all cancer patients to meet and socialize once a month. We could even call it the "Cancer Corner!!!" Uh, no. On SO many levels. It took a while, but she finally got it.)
Anyway, the point I wanted to make is that if I have posted anything that you want to use, feel free to do so. You can attribute it to a Breast Cancer Survivor, if you want, or just post it.
I do believe posts about MBC should be separate. This is an important enough subject to warrant a mini- lesson of its own. Too much info in one FB post makes readers skip to the next one. I want my friends and family to THINK about what I've written. I've gotten a lot of "Likes" and a surprisingly high number of "Shares" on my FB BC posts.
As I come up with more (October is a long month) I'll share them here.
xoxo
And if anyone thinks that I am patient and loving, believe me, I DO have a flamethrower and I know how to use it!!!!

Tupperware has gone pink on us! Got an e-mail today saying they are "having a special Pink sale to show support!" I almost fell off my chair.
0 -
I don't want people to "show support" - I want them to give $$ to research.

I figured out how to avoid the email thingys at least. I stopped emptying my email. Haven't checked it since there were 650. By now they have been bouncing for awhile. Rare that I open or look at anyway. Almost always just delete. I feel if someone really cares they will call.

Well, that does it. I won't be buried in Tupperware after all.
Blessings - Thanks. I will likely paraphrase your post. I agree that we don't want to go long or they won't be read. I am concerned that I could let of too much steam and go on and on. You did a great job of making excellent points without rambling.

A local pub had a half page ad this morning, for Pink Drinks. For each one sold in Oct, they will donate $1 to Komen
Yeah. Bunch of drunks saving the TaTas

I didn't know what this topic was about, just clicked to check it out but I'm on board with you. I've told everybody since this nightmare began, I'm not feeling the whole pink thing. I don't want to advertise for this terrible disease. My friend had breast cancer and she immediately had the license plate, the sweat shirt, the lapel pin, the purse, everything and thats fine if it made her feel better but when I found this out, I had no desire to wear pink ribbons and all that. I said, I'm not feeling it at all. I had heard once that many of these companies that sell the pink, donate very little to breast cancer and I see by your postings, thats true. Typical marketing ploy, make buck off of whomever you can.

Went to a Halloween store with my kids yesterday. Yes, you guessed it, the store had a whole section of Pink related crap - decals, pens, window sticks, etc. What does this have to do with costumes and trick or treating for Pete's sake?! I was disgusted and saddened. Ugh. Can't even get away from it on a fun outing with my kids.

I'm planning to post something on my FB timeline at least to warn about pink and know where their pink purchases money goes....even the "Race(s) for the Cure" seem to be filled with people making a holiday of a nasty serious disease. It's like a pink July 4th...what no bands or floats? Probably next year...I've come to my pink dislike gradually and have to admit that until I had cancer I had no idea at how blind I was...

Oh, my gosh. I just got through going through this thread and I went to my personal email inbox. I couldn't believe the email I received from P.F. Chang's restaurant chain. I wish I could attach a copy of it. It says 'Help us paint our horses pink. On Tuesday, September 30 @ 4:00 pm local time, every P.F. Chang's warrior horse in America will be painted or decorated pink to support breast cancer awareness. MARK YOUR CALENDARS Come out to help and enjoy complimentary pink sushi.' And then there is a link at the bottom of the page for the Menu and Reservations.
The P.F. Chang's warrior horse is a huge stone horse statue.
I'm speechless as to the tackiness of this.
Thanks, PF Changs, for the complimentary sushi. Unfortunately, women on chemo are not permitted to eat sushi due to their compromised immune system. Maybe someone in your company should have researched that so you could offer something that all people could eat.
What do you guys think of this? I think I am going to write to the company.

On some of the other forums I'm on, in my siggy line I have
Think before you pink.
Do you know how the money is spent?
I leave it there year round

Marie - Yes! Definitely educate PF Chang's on the sushi issue!

Too late for this year, GO FOR IT ANYWAY!!!!

Thank you, WarriorWoman!
Being a former counselor and educator, I somehow feel it is my personal mission to educate people no matter where I am!
(And I honestly don't care how obnoxious anyone thinks I am... )
If you are a store manager and I find your display offensive, you are going to get an earful from me. Respectfully, of course.....
There are GAZILLIONS of us women with BC around, and we DO shop!
If we see something in a store that is offensive - or even questionable - I do think it is worth mentioning to the owner or manager. At least plant the seed that this whole "Pinkwashing" debacle could ultimately work against them in the form of fewer patrons in their store.
I once waited 15 minutes to talk to the night manager of a large grocery chain store, just because I was assaulted by a wall of pink-wrapped variety pack chips.
As I explained the reason for my concern, she shook her head sadly. "I tried to tell the Regional Manager that, but they didn't care." Turns out she was dx'd as Triple Negative TEN YEARS AGO and is doing well. I was preaching to the choir.
So that led me to write to major manufacturers questioning them about their advertising strategies, making money off the miseries of breast cancer patients everywhere. The best answer I got back was something along the lines of "Our company is committed to the cause ......blah blah blah"
Oh, sorry, I forgot what it said because basically it said nothing.
But I still believe our dollars are important, and letting unscrupulous vendors who do not donate ANY funds to reputable Breast Cancer causes are going to get called out about it.
If I had the energy (and the memory) I would love to start a "Pinkwashing Shaming" FB page and NAME those companies who do bad business. Then we could avoid them like the plague, and let them know why.
Argh - took me all day to finish this.. Off to bed!

Hear, hear!
I like the idea of a FB page since social media seems to be the only voice that many companies fear. Twitter seems even more powerful, but I'm not into that.

I don't do either. I can only vote with my feet, and voice.

So glad I found this thread. I am so weary of the pink-washing, but I thought I was just being cranky. It's undeniable that a lot of good has been done in the last couple of decades, and advances have obviously been made, and I am grateful for that. But, it's high time companies and organizations stopped using a horrific illness as a marketing tool. If I thought buying pink yogurt or wearing pink shoes would cure it, I'd do it in a heartbeat. It's time to stop profiting off the misery of women and find the damn cure. Or is that not profitable enough?
Yes, I am a cynic.
