OOOh Bobo, I want this machine now. I want to make the Almond Milk and the juices, custard and icecream..... yumm! and the soups...how about pesto from my own herbs???
I had a blender catastrophe this morning! I put my frozen banana, handful of 4 berry mix, Naturade meal replacement, Maxi Greens and Almond Milk. Turned it on and then smelt this awful burning smell. I switched it off and found the damn thing had tried to consume its own rubber gasket ring. It was wrapped around the blade and my breakfast was ruined by the burning smoke..yuck.. I so need this Vitamix now. ........Won't hear back till after the weekend, but I am pretty sure no one else had approached her about it, so I think I am the only interested party.
Off to bed, going to yard sales in the am....chat later M x0 -
My favorite tapestry was of blue hydrangeas. I wanted it for my dining room that I don't have:). Store has gone out of business now.
My grandmother was a painter: china, coats of arms, seasonal table decorations. Didn't inherit the gift. My niece is interested.
I have no cabinet or counter top space. Microwave on last legs, maybe toaster too. Would replace toaster with a smaller one. Wish microwave was over the counter. Even have a contractor husband but no such luck.
Maybe I'll ask Santa. Have already said I need a ceiling fan in the bedroom. Would be awesome if either of those happened while I was in Ohio next week. How do I convince him?0 -
Hiya Zills, isn't it the way, a contractor is always doing work for other people!
Does he have a sense of humor? If so, I'd put sticky post it notes in places that he will find them asking "Santa" for the ceiling fan and the microwave shelf! Inside his sock drawer, and the bathroom cabinet or mirror, overalls pocket, maybe his tool box and the windscreen of the car. If he doesn't have a sense of humor, don't do it 'cause it will really piss him off!............Just a thought! M x0 -
Zills, that is always the way isnt it.. you are last on list of jobs.. my cousin ran the Standard Oil truck in town years ago and his wife said she was the one that would run out of fuel!! no one else did!! A ceiling fan is the best thing since sliced bread! Love ours, the AC doesnt have to run near as much. I too wish my microwave was under cabinets as I have limited space.. that is why I am still thinking about air fryer.. saw on HSN they had the phillips for 199.00 and free shipping, read some reviews and still not sure if I would use it alot, but liking Arioms reviews. I think I need a programmable crockpot more.. I use crockpots alot, came in so handy when I was working 6 days a week! I always said I could put a bean in the crockpot, come back 12 hours later and it was still fine!
Bobo, here is recipe for 6 baked apples, this actually can be made in crockpot too, that was the original recipe, but I have never used it, I use regular oven.
6 Apples
1/4 cup brown sugar (or whatever sweeetner you use, I have used agave too)
1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
2 Tblsp
butter
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 cup of apple juice or water
2 Tblsp orange liquor (optional)
use apples that dont get mushy, like McIntosh or Gala, (mine were not the best for baking last night), core but dont cut thru the bottom of apple , leave about 1/2 inch, you can remove the skin if you like but I think it holds the apple together a little. Fill the cored apple with the sugar, cinnamon, butter, nuts, (if anyone has nut allergy raisins could be used or eliminated) and place in baking pan, add the juice or water and liquor and cover with foil and bake for 45 min. to 60, keep checking them. I had apples from son's trees and they arent the best baking ones, use them mostly for juicing, but they still tasted good, just got a little mushy. Very easy to throw together, frankly I dont really measure ingredients closely just throw together to your taste.. good luck. They taste great with ice cream or frozen vanilla yogurt too.0 -
oooo.. i can smell those apples now. Now you guys have me craving apple cobbler.
I love my crockpot.. apples in the crockpot would make the house smell so good!!
Zils, isn't there a saying about the cobblers kids always have bare feet or some crap. My dad was an electrician and we had bare bulbs hanging in some rooms and exposed outlets lol. Ceiling fans are also good in winter used in reverse. I have 4 ceiling fans in my tiny house, 1 kitchen, 2 in bedroom and 1 in living room.. I love them. Tell him it will cut back the heating bill. Do what I do.. just buy it and and pretend you are going to put it up yourself.. that usually gets Joe in gear.. God forbid I would do it and tell ppl.. or even worse.. rummage through his tools!
Too funny, i've been looking for a nice blue hydrangea canvas to put in the entryway.
$200.00 seems expensive for an appliance and it appears to me that the basket is really small... i can't imagine things taste much different in that then they would being baked... if it was under $100, i might give it a try, but I can't justify that much money. I too don't have much counterspace... maybe someday can afford a kitchen reno or win the lottery
Back to work I go.0 -
I am going to do the apples too, but will give the Air fryer a go. I totally agree with you ldesim, on the price. Mine was on sale for $99.00 + $5.00 p&h that was the only reason I bought it. The basket is small, but the perfect size for the two of us. It would never do enough for a family. Last night I did 3 slices of beef olive in it while I fried up leftover sweet potato, potato, corn, broccoli and carrots in a little garlic infused olive oil, and Tumeric. The whole meal was done in less than 12 minutes and the steaks had only cost $2.99 for three. I am yet to try a good cut of meat in the fryer because it does such a great job of the cheap cuts, that I would never have dreamed of buying before. I am really not trying to sell anyone on it, I am just surprised that I am getting such great results, so fast and that I am actually enjoying using it. I was "over" cooking, some time ago. I watched a Phillips show on our shopping network to get an idea of how it works, and that sold me too.
I know I will use the Vitamix, if I get it because we have smoothies all the time and I use the regular blender quite a bit. I wasn't planning on the one I had having a melt down! The cost for the Vitamix is prohibitive here, I wouldn't even consider spending the $1200.00 that this unit I am considering, cost new. In fact I am still a bit shell shocked at spending the $400.00 delivered, that she is asking, but it has still got over 6 years of warranty on it, and the exact same model is still selling on our shopping network for the $1200.00. I told Colin I think it is an investment piece:)
Off to do the Rites, and shower, have to get out to the yard sales this morning, oh mean to mention, the "BIG" garage sale last week went off really well, I am so sorry I missed it. There were 40 houses involved this year, 25 last year, that Colin and I managed to get to every one! Catch you all later....M x0 -
Another ? is the Ninja just a cheaper version of the Vitamix? I also have seen advertisements of the Bullet I think anyway, I like my juicer and blender but I know the fiber is lost in the juice. I dont think I would ever use it $1200.00, I know myself .. get all wrapped up in an idea and buy it, use it for awhile and poof! it is sitting on the shelf in the basement and only brought up when the spirit moves me again. so I couldnt justify that price, still thinking about air fryer, need more test results from Ariom!! But no doubt would use the programmable crockpot several times a week, i love mine too.
About those blue hydrangeas, I had them at one time and if you had some acidic fertilizer when watering they will turn pink!! I know, I know another pink item!! but they are pretty too, I still prefer blue but fun changing them up. I like the color pink, and used to wear it alot... dont think I will let this change my mind on what I like for colors but hate that all that $$ could go for something better.0 -
That is true about hydrangeas! I read it too and I've seen a neighbor do it. I am going to do the baked apples also. Right now, in fact.
M! Your blender died an honorable death to make room for the Vitamix! Do NOT get a Ninja blender: they suck. Why can you not order the Vitamix from US Qvc and ship to Sarasota? Mine was $400. I know that's pricey, but I was stressed to the gills and eating mostly liquids. It has paid for itself.
I have no counter space either. No microwave. I mean NO counter space! Tiny house kitchen. I've never had a toaster oven either! DLLP wants one so badly, she brought a busted one home from a yard sale. I won't let her put it in the kitchen.
Off to do apples! Thank you ND!
M, you can do pesto, use the 'pulse' function. I don't like my pesto too runny. Frankly I believe pesto is best done with mortar and pestle.0 -
I think we had a Vita Mix once and used it a few times. It took forever to clean and we took it down to the basement. No idea if we still have it somewhere. I don't care for smoothies, so I wouldn't get any good out of it.0 -
mine made a lovely vase for dried arrangements0 -
ok all you shopping, gadget people. Have a loaded ?
Has anybody bought and used more than a few times a dehydrator? I'm thinking of getting one, found one on amazon for $35, are they really useful?0 -
If you grow your own food or can buy it at a big discount, it's useful. I was given one by a friend (hand-made out of wood) and we use it for drying apples and pears (2 trees each in our yard). Ours lives in the basement on top of the clothes dryer. I wouldn't want it in our tiny kitchen. That seems like a reasonable price and it's probably a more manageable size.0 -
it's a Presto, electric. I've joined a food co-op. Tried to dry apples in my oven, burned those suckers! Could have been chemo brain too.0 -
My daughter sent me a dehydrator as a gift in the Spring. (It is square shaped more space for loading. It came from Amazon too.) She is a big beef jerky eater and wanted me to try it out and see if it was worth her getting one. I made one batch of beef jerky which I slightly over dried. I had to tweak the recipe so no sugar/honey, but it was pretty good if you didn't mind a lot of chewing! Then the bc sh!t hit the fan and I haven't had a chance to use it again. I wanted to dry some veggies too, but I think I have missed that window for this year. It is stored in a cupboard right now, but since you jogged my memory, I think I will try another batch of jerky.
One thing I did to save time was have the butcher at at the grocery store cut the meat for me. That gave me much more even sized/thickness pieces. Yep, think I need to do that again!!0 -
I was going in to the opp shop one morning, just as a woman was handing over a brand new electric one still in the box. I bought it for $5.00, couldn't believe it! I have Fig, Apple, Pear, Lemon, Lime and Grapefruit trees, so intend to try it this season, but haven't tried it since buying it.
I am so envious that two of you have a Vitamix and have used them for dried flowers or storing in the basement. I believe the soups, sauces and the ice cream you can make in it are really amazing, apparently, it far exceeds anything any normal blender can do, in fact they don't even call it a blender here. I think the motor is 2 horsepower!!!! They are so incredibly expensive, why not put them on Ebay and buy something else with the money? I don't know if I have just gotten caught up in the hype of it all!!!!!! M x0 -
M, believe the hype! You are right about horsepower!
Working from bed. Worked all morning at the college. Coming down with something -- body aches. Dried meat is gross! XXX0 -
I cannot listen to this appliance talk! I am a gadget junkie. I made a sweet potato and ginger soup today, no vitamix, just an immersion blender. It was good, but next time I will use less ginger then the recipe called for and then I think it will be perfect.
It was cold and windy today, not really enough leaves to rake up yet... I am trying not to turn the heat on until Nov 1st. Switched to the flannel sheets today and winter quilt. The one thing I do love about this time of year is the cold nights and slipping into a warm cozy bed.
Have I told you before about my crazy sister in law? She is one of those ppl that posts her every move each day on Facebook... from the moment she gets up to what she is eating or cooking, what she is cleaning, where she is shopping.. etc. etc. Today she posts that she is putting up one of the 5 xmas trees she puts up every year,,, yes, I said 5. I don't get it.... reading that crap ruins the holiday for me. I refuse to think about Xmas until the day after Thanksgiving.
Anybody have any good plans for Halloween? My GF's BF has to work (good riddance.. I'm not a fan) so I volunteered to go with her and her two kids trick or treating.. I'm looking forward to it. Things have changed so much since I was small, it makes me sad. As kids we used to go out for hours in a huge group by ourselves.0 -
Bobogirl, I hope whatever it is passes quickly0 -
Hi there!
Lovely day here, and I am now switching Colin's winter woolies out of the walk in, and replacing with lovely cotton sweaters and Tshirts. He's a cold blooded soul and hates to see the woolies being put away. He has so much sailing wet weather gear and snow suits, I just don't know what to do with it all.
I am finding all the Marika I bought that was the wrong size. I feel an Ebay moment coming on!
I wish I knew if there will be any kids around for Halloween, last year Colin and I ate all the candy because there weren't any kids trick or treating. What's the bet if I don't buy stuff in, they will show up in hoards. One of Colin's attendants has two of a huge group of Japanese exchange students, but I think they leave the day before, can't rely on them for my Halloween Fix! I've even got a witches hat at the ready! LOL
Bobo, so sorry, but not surprised, you are feeling under the weather. Can you just slow down a little bit?
ldesim, you always bring a smile:) I love the way you won't entertain things until a certain date! I have never thought of things that way, but you make me think I should!
What is it with SIL's? 5 Christmas trees, what is she thinking? and this Facebook crap really floors me. I don't get into it, and I really get blown away by people who want to share their every move and waking moment, but more flummoxed by the ones who want to read about it! My friends are always at me to join, Bec was going to set me up, but I just don't want to. Have you heard about the companies who check Facebook before they hire someone, and the bosses act all friendly so they are on the friends list only to check what their staff are up to? Lots of people been let go because they bragged about taking sickies off work etc, and the damn boss was reading along! Duh!!!!
ldesim, I'd love to go trick or treating with you and the kids!
Bobo, what are your two doing for Halloween? and Zills, what about yours?
Off to tackle the last of the wardrobe....take care all.....M x0 -
Spookiesmom, I dried a dehydrator and did some fresh garden carrots, thought it would be so great to have them for soups, casseroles, etc., took a long time doing them, and I really didnt care for them so much anyway. The appliance was my dil's but I knew I would never buy one for myself. She used to do apples and they were ok, but we just didnt like them so much.
Get better soon Bobo.
I have a ?? for you gals.. do any of you get flu shots? my dr. thinks I should have one, but I never have had one in my life and not sure i want one now... what do you all think and do? Thanks in advance.0 -
I get a flu shot every single year. My freshman year in college was a flu epidemic year. I was in the infirmary for a full week, most of which I can't remember. The main thing I remember was having a high fever, sleeping, and waking up with my pony tail soaked. Once I got out, I was just dragging for the next 2 weeks. I had a really difficult schedule and almost didn't make it thru the semester. I never want to go through that again. And now that I just turned 73, I'm at higher risk for doom if it get it.0 -
I have tried the flu shot about a half dozen times in my life, and every time I was sick as a dog after it. I know, they say the virus is dead and it can't make you sick, but even my Doctor of 35 years told me not to do it again. We even tried a half dose one year, but 3 days later I was in bed with the flu and a swollen painful arm. I am not allergic to eggs, so that isn't the problem either.
Most people get on fine with it. Colin has one every year and never gets sick.0 -
bobo, hope whatever it is passes quickly and you are back to normal quickly. I bet all the stresses lately just caught up with you and now that they are past, you'll be fine soon.
When my DH was alive we really did Christmas up big, he just love that holiday! We had a home and a vacation cabin when we were both working, they were both decorated to the gills. The home was done in golds and the cabin in silvers. But the rule was we didn't start to decorate until Dec 6 and everything came down by Jan 6. It took us about 3 days to do it all at each place and then the same to take it all down. One year we spent Christmas in Europe. I was totally amazed that decorations didn't appear until about Dec 15! You know, that's the way I like it!! Since he passed, I just haven't been able to decorate for Christmas at all. I have about 10 big tubs of decorations in the garage that haven't been opened in the 9 years I have been here in MT.
When we traveled we traveled in the Fall and early Winter we got flu shots then, especially when we were going to Europe. But since he passed and I work from home, I haven't had a flu shot in years and years. I am current on my pneumonia shot though.
I am not a social media person at all. In fact I deleted myself from FB about a couple of years ago. I just don't understand telling people your every move, mine would certainly bore everyone to death!! I don't know, maybe it is I am of a different generation, but I am private and aside from this forum and my diabetes forum, I don't share that much online. Young people these days are so open to future bosses looking at lifestyle and to burglars casing their homes knowing they are off on vacation....
We hiked and backpacked a lot and jerky was a staple in our diet on the trail. We'd go out in the wilderness for a week or 10 days and jerky was an easy source of protein. Now that I don't get out in the wild that much (read ever), the focus is more on the diabetes. I can carry jerky easily and if I need to eat, it is there and easily packed.
Looks like we are headed for a big change in the weather from crisp Fall days to snow. I has already been below freezing at night for a week. So many leaves down, I've raked a little but will wait till they are all down at this point.
No word from the fitter re my order.... I was hoping they would come in this past week. I so want everything to fit and there not have to be exchanges...0 -
Poor Bobo. Hope you are taking good care of yourself.
We have a local producer of beef jerky. Used to love it but it doesn't taste good now. Haven't tried any of the flavors. Guys at work made deer jerky. Dried apple pies are popular in the eastern part of the state. My neighbor loved to dry grape tomatoes. I've never used one.
Already turned the heat on plus wear a hat and vest inside. Usually cold during the day but hot, hot at night. Flashing right now and the neighbors weaned the calves. Even the coyotes are singing. Fun in the country. Poor cows.
Finally made the lasagna. Invited my aunt over for dinner. Tasted ok but was missing something. Basil I think. May have been the lactose cheese too. Must have been good. Just enough leftover for kids lunch today.
Skipped my reflux meds today. Had one spell earlier. Think it was the OJ but it sure tasted good. No problems with the lasagna. Not sure if I'll skip it again today. Doctor said to wean myself off.
Supposed to rain for Halloween. Still planning on going to my sister's. Little bit worried that I'll get enough sleep and the drive. I do ok with a 30-45 min drive alone. It's a 2.5 hour drive with kids across bridges and six lanes of traffic.
Still having dizzy moments. Got ears to drain but understand it's a common side effect of tamoxifen. Not sure which one or both. See nurse on Tuesday for port flushing so will ask.
Idesim. Did you have this or a funky mouth? Can see why pounds creep up. Always trying to get rid of it and bad things taste good. Cake and chips! Toast and jelly.
Wonder how long I have to keep my port. Does it have to be surgically removed? If I need another one, can it go back on the same side?
Hope everyone has a relaxing Sunday.0 -
I always got a flu shot. Been told to get one this year but keep putting it off. Was going on Friday but boy was sick late Thursday. Guess I need to do that this week.
They want me to get a pneumonia shot too. Said I could get the shingles vaccine too. Don't know if ins would cover it since I'm under 50. Won't get either until after rads. One thing at a time.
I've always had a sore injection site and felt off over the weekend when I got them in the past but Advil took care of it and was good by Monday. I start moving that arm when I get them now. Always take the kids to the playground afterwards so they don't get sore either.
I was down for two weeks also and got bronchitis afterwards when I didn't get the shot. This was when I was young and healthy with no kids. Don't have time for it now. Guess I better get my butt to the doctor.0 -
I got the flu shot this year because of sx... got it last year because I was at hospital for a week with our princess, and I could not be sick there. Working through whatever this is... laundry planning classes grocery shopping etc. What else can I do, you guys? I can just see our Ariom hopping mad at this report!
Idesim I have bad news. I must be ready for Christmas by 6 December! I'm going to decorate thanksgiving weekend. But that means I must be shopped up by then. Earliest ever! Just don't want to overburden DLLP for after sx... she is not much of a multitasker.
Off to grocery! XXX0 -
A friend of ours brought salmon jerky back from the Tlingit-Haida meeting in Alaska. It was the best tasting stuff. We tried buying some here from a specialty shop, but it wasn't nearly as good. Maybe look for a recipe in an Alaskan cookbook.
Bobo, you are definitely the energizer bunny. I can't even imagine getting your to do list done. DH and I have a small artificial tree. The real thing is hard on my asthma.0 -
M, we are trick or treating in the neighborhood. Our princess will be a mouse (almost finished with the costume, must do the hand-sewing tonight), and W boy will be a skeleton (pajamas). DLLP is going in a kimono! She looks great, she already tried it at her work party. She won first prize! I will not dress up. I will be lucky if I make it to Thursday.
Checking in on the thread as a paper-grading avoidance mechanism.0 -
Grade everybody the same grade and then you will be all done!
Zils, I haven't had either of those issues.... I'm getting the joint pain... feel like an old lady when I get up in the AM. At first I thought I was just overdoing things, but no.. it's a daily ritual which I guess is common on the Tami. Dizziness is one of the side effects of Tami.. but I haven't had that yet. Now you have me worried about you driving with the two kids for that length of time. Isn't DH going to be around? I know nothing about ports, sorry can't help you on that one... I'm surprised it wasn't discussed at the end of chemo.
I've never had the flu shot and nobody has pressured me to get one either.. so I will pass. MO asked if I wanted one last week.. I said no and that was that. In the past, I've rarely had the flu and if I do come down with something, it only lasts for about a day. Hopefully this hasn't changed since chemo. My brother got the shot last year and said he felt horrible for a couple of days. Now the shingles vaccine, I will for sure get in line for. My mother has the shingles and it's just horrible the pain she goes through from a flare up of that.
There is good and bad to Facebook. I find it is an easy way to be in touch with a lot of people at one time... for instance during my treatment. I'd prefer ppl heard things from me then second hand. I've also reconnected with some ppl that I had lost track of over the years which is nice. I am certainly not somebody that lives on it like my SIL... she's just ridiculous... all I can think of when I read most of her posts is..... who the hell cares? Nobody gives two sh!ts that you're on your second load of laundry.. unless it is their laundry you are doing! I don't care if you are at Stop & Shop... why do you feel the need to tell us? She's not exactly my fav person in the world.. she's always been a busybody.
Bobogirl, you are excused from being included on my sh1tlist (this year only) for prepping for xmas too early! Thanksgiving is really late this year too.
GrammaB that's an insane amount of decorating, but I bet it was beautiful. I can't see spending 12 total days... if I read right... for something you keep up for a month!! For us, we put candles in the windows and lights on the bushes, the tree up and I change curtains in the kitchen & dining room.. that's about it. I love the candles in the windows.. that's my fav part... doesn't even bother me when it gets dark at 4 pm, because I have the candles
I have no opinion on jerky, never really had it and am in no rush to try
Off to do some ironing.. bleh.0 -
Zills, is there anyone that can go with you that can drive too when you go to your Sister's? That's a long drive, especially if you are having dizzy spells.
bobo, I don't know where you get all that energy!! If you could bottle some of it and sell it, you'd be a millionaire in no time!! Shopping for Christmas early may actually be less stressful, you won't have to deal with huge crowds. Do you shop much online? That could be another easy way to get some of it done.
Oh Wren, I love salmon jerky!! I used to order Marlin jerky from a store in Hawaii, hmmm, haven't done that in a while, maybe I'll check it out again.
ldesim, yeah, it was a crazy amount of work, but my DH really loved Christmas and the house & cabin always looked magical for Dec. I just can't do it for just myself and the little bit of company I might have.0
