Also, there is a great non-profit, The Breast Cancer Resource Center, that can provide resources and good information!

Hi Terri! Thank you for the welcome as well as describing how you made your chemo decision. My oncotype score is 17 and my MO said she'd be comfortable with no chemo, but I'm younger than 50 and the TAILORx trial states that chemo did benefit women in that age group with risk scores between 15 - 25. So my MO also said that I could do chemo to avoid regret later on in case there is ever a recurrence and I end up wondering if chemo would have made a difference? Like you, I also have family history even though I tested negative on the genetics panel. MO thinks it's very possible that my cancer is familial and perhaps we have a genetic mutation that hasn't been discovered yet. I've been told that chemo would probably be little benefit, but I have not been able to sleep ever since I heard that my MO was leaning towards no.

I really didn't have much choice. I was only stage 1, but had 2 different tumors with different make-ups in one breast, at a grade 3, so they were growing super fast. Even with all the side effects and issues i still have 5 years later, I still think it was the correct line of treatment.

So sorry that you find yourself having to come to this group - but welcome. These are a great group of women. I found them during the first week I was diagnosed and they were a lifesaver for me. There were so many questions and choices to be made it can be overwhelming at times. So it is good to ask questions and get other peoples perspective. But ultimately you have to make the decision that is right for you. Not your doctor - not one of us - just you.
I went through chemo, then double mastectomy and then radiation. But I do remember my oncologist saying of all the things that we do to treat this disease in women the most effective thing at keeping it at bay is probably the aromatase inhibitor we take. I didn’t have the onco test done as mine was already at stage III which automatically meant I needed to do the chemo and radiation. And while the chemo was not fun to go through it was not as bad as I thought it would be. And in a crazy sort of way it made me feel very safe and protected as if I could see the chemo killing off any stray cancer cells.
And in fact I was a little bit sad and depressed when I finished chemo. Again I felt like I wasn’t being protected any longer. I know it’s crazy but this disease makes you think crazy things. LOL
Don’t know if any of that helps you but I know these ladies are here for you. I moved to Florida two years ago but come back to Texas to Scott and White to see my oncologist. And I always try and check in with the ladies. And in fact I will be coming mid September - meet up?
Sending hugs - Candy

I arrive the evening of the 11th & fly back on the 18th of September. On Saturday the 15th I’ll be in round rock from about 11am - 12 to get my eyebrows done (tattoo) - so could meet for a 12:30/1 pm lunch on Saturday or perhaps something on Sunday in Georgetown / round rock or Salado ?

maiyen, Unfortunately, there are no guarantees with any of our treatments. Ultimately, like Candy said, it is up to you. There are a couple of websites, "predict" and cancermath ( I think) that will give you stats on benefits, etc. if you are interested. Good luck with your decision.
Pls try to make a meet-up with us if you can! Newbies are always welcome:).
Good to hear from you ladies~
September meet up sounds great! It's been too long. Let's make a plan:)

Hi all! Long time no post. Hectic work and life schedule. I hit my 5-yr cancerversary last month (diagnosis) or this month (surgery) depending on how you look at it. See the oncologist next Friday. We will decide on 5-more yrs of meds or do we stop. A big factor will be the latest results of my bone density test. While taking my meds, they found a compression fracture on my T6, a prime cancer target. One MRI later determined it was definitely a fracture and not a recurrence. Good news/bad news right? So, stay on my meds for 5 more years and lower my risk of recurrence from 7% to 3 or 4% but increase my risk of possible bone loss. It will depend on whether my bone doc can keep the loss at a minimum. Ah decisions, decisions. I just see so many women with my cancer come off their meds at the 5-yr mark and discover a recurrence at year six. Well see. Would love to see everyone but the 4th is rough for me as well. December?

Hi Vicki! good to hear from you. I have had continued bone loss also, but took Tamoxifen, not AI. 5 yrs for me, too! YAY US! I am not taking anything except calcium/mag, Vit D and I added Vit K2 this yr. to help prevent further bone loss. Who are you seeing for your bone loss issues? My MO has never recommended seeing anyone, but I may have to look into it...they seem to only look at BC. Have my mammo coming up soon. Fingers crossed!
Dec may be good for me, depending on the date...always a busy month for everyone, I know!
Take care,
T

What about Sunday the 16th?

Hello all!
I am a breast cancer survivor from Texas Hill Country also. I was wondering if anyone has had trouble with renewing their drivers license renewal in texas due to ongoing cancer treatment. The application has a generic question that asks if you've been treated for any illness in the past 2 years. I've had a minor local recurrence and need to go for my renewal and am very anxious about it. My doctor is perfectly fine with me driving and so is my phramacist based on my medication. Not sure if I should be prepared with anything before I go. Let me know if y'all have had any experience with this.
Thanks in advance!
Ann

Hi Ann, I just renewed my license online last time. I am not currently in active treatment. I don't remember anything about medical questions. Seems like a strange question. Almost an invasion of privacy... Maybe call DPS...? Feel free to join us when we meet up next time!
Jen', Not sure about the 16th yet. Have a lot of family planning going on. On top of C-mas, one of my GS's has a bday on the 14th. But, I'll check back in later...

Thanks Taylor! Thats exactly how I feel, that its an invasion of privacy.. This is the specific question "Within the past two years, have you been treated for any other serious medical conditions?" - to which I feel the need to say yes, even though I have a local recurrence. I used to live in Washington state and have never been asked such a question there so was a little taken aback by this.
I'd love to join y'all when you meet next! Ill keep an eye out on this thread.

Hi ladies,
I had my first mammogram on 11/1 which showed assymetry with focal distortion on my right breast. I was called back and had 3 more mammogram views and an ultrasound yesterday. The radiologist says I have a 5mm mass and I need an ultrasound guided biopsy. This year has been horrible. I've had flu, 6 weeks of ear pain leading to tmj, and in the last 6 weeks I've been really sick. First strep, then uti, then abdominal pain. I had my gallbladder removed on Thursday and now this news yesterday. Ugh. Wish me luck.
Oh, and it was my 45th birthday yesterday. And btw, I’m in Leander, TX.

Fi, welcome to the group! Hopefully, we will have a meetup sooner than later! We invite all to join and hope you can make it also! Happy Birthday!
It sounds like you have a lot going on. I hope your biopsy shows benign results. Pls keep us posted!
HUGS,
Terri

welcome Beavermtx! This is a great group of ladies who were there for me from my first day of diagnosis. I don’t know where I would be without their knowledge, encouragement, support and friendship. I’ve since moved to FL but try to see them the 2 times I return to Ztx for follow up appts.
I’ll be coming 3/19-3/26 - so we MUST plan a get together. Missed you guys in September.
Hugs, Candy

HAPPY THANKSGIVING LADIES! I am thankful for the five yr mark. And continued support from you ladies! Dr. Kos and I decided on 5 more yrs on the meds. Dr. Ramani put me on Actinel (sp) to keep bones where they are. Terri - love this guy at ARC Hesters Crossing. Jen 12/16 may be rough but let's try. Candy can't wait to see you in March. Safe travels! For all newcomers ... welcome! Let us know if you need anything ... a chat, a bitch fest only BC ladies can understand, a shoulder, wisdom (Jen and Terri). We got your back!
